The only thing scarier than ghosts is falling in love.
Knox McIntyre has mastered the art of avoiding drama, especially the romantic kind. Ever since his screenwriting career went up in flames, the grumpy bartender has kept his past buried and his heart off-limits. But when a paranormal reality show sets its sights on the boutique hotel where he works, he gets roped into the production—and partnered with the one woman who just might unravel him.
Charlotte “Charlie” Fraser is the Duchess Hotel’s sunny front office manager, a hopeless romantic with a weakness for happy endings and broody bartenders. After months of pining for Knox, she’s ready to act—even if it means battling her inner scaredy-cat by helping him bring a ghost-hunting show to the hotel this Halloween.
As Knox and Charlie dig into the hotel’s chilling past, they find themselves irresistibly drawn to each other. Every lingering look, near kiss, and shared secret brings them closer to something real. But unless they can summon the courage to face their feelings head-on, their love doesn’t stand a ghost of a chance.
Be Our Ghost is a grumpy/sunshine workplace rom-com with haunted vibes, Halloween hijinks, and a slow-burn romance that’s worth believing in.
Carla Luna writes contemporary romance with a dollop of humor and a pinch of spice. A former archaeologist, she still dreams of traveling to far-off places and channels that wanderlust into the settings of her stories. When she’s not writing, she works in a spice emporium where she gets paid to discuss food and share her favorite recipes. Her passions include Broadway musicals, baking, whimsical office supplies, and pop culture podcasts. Though she has roots in Los Angeles and Victoria, B.C., she currently resides in Wisconsin with her family and her feisty Siberian cat.
This is book 2/2 in the Duchess Hotel series. I didn’t realise this when I agreed to review Be Our Ghost, but the book reads perfectly as a stand alone story. That said, I will be adding book one to my library.
#BeOurGhost is a fun read. A ghostly project to prove the hotel is haunted brings together our two main characters, Knox and Charlie. As they work together, sparks fly and things get a little spicy between the pair. Can Charlie and Knox attract the attention of a national ghost hunting tv show with the ghostly goings on at the hotel?
I liked Knox and Charlie. They both have their own baggage - his past and her mother! Their romance is a slow burning sizzler, and well worth turning those pages for.
I loved the ghostly thread to this story. It isn’t heavy on the scaries, but did give me goosebumps.
Overall #BeOurGhost is a spooky and spicy tale. Absolutely perfect for your October reading.
Be Our Ghost is the second book in The Duchess Hotel series and is set in a hotel of that name in Victoria, British Columbia. It can easily be read as a standalone as no prior knowledge of the previous story is needed to be able to enjoy this novel.
This is a workplace romance which finds the two main characters, Charlie and Knox, finally getting together, thanks to a joint project to prove The Duchess Hotel is haunted and convince a national ghost hunting television programme to film at the hotel.
When I started reading, I immediately wanted to know more about the ghost, and thought that particular thread was a little slow to get going. I found Knox's backstory interesting, and winced at Charlie's mother championing Charlie's previous relationship, making things awkward between Charlie and Knox.
Although I am not one for spicy sex scenes, I did enjoy reading Be Our Ghost and was very satisfied with how this story concluded, so much so that I've added the first in this series, Santa Maybe, to be Wishlist.
Carla Luna has been a favorite author of mine since I first read Blue Hawaiian. I’ve enjoyed this series as well, and was so excited for it to come out this summer. Then there was some sad news posted by her family on her social media that she had passed away suddenly. The family still wanted to get this book out though, and it was pushed back a month or so. I’m glad I got a chance to read it, and it was a perfect read for October with the little bit of paranormal/ghostly aspect to the story.
I liked Charlie and Knox together. They were definitely perfect for each other. While Knox could be grumpy, Charlie was more of a sunshine. They’d both kind of crushed on the other one, but neither did anything about it until an unexpected hotel opportunity popped up and kind of pushed them to spend time together. Once they did that, they realized the other was interested and started giving things a shot. I loved the spooky vibe at the hotel, something that no one had really known about until they decided to dig into it so they might be able to get a shot on a paranormal reality tv show. So while this wasn’t a full paranormal romance, there were some ghostly scenes with a murder victim from the hotel’s early days.
But Knox had something in his background that still affected how he did things. And Charlie was needing to deal with her parents and her own past. Both kind of make strides, but then a couple incidents lead to some hard feelings between the two of them. While both have the blow up, they are able to be rational after some thinking time on their own and figure out how to get back to the other and make up for what they felt they’d done wrong.
I was upset a little with Charlie for how she behaved at the one event. Because yes, she was defending Knox, but she was going a little overboard. Of course the way he deflected back onto her own issues was not great either. However, it did cause both of them to listen to what the other said when they were thinking things over, and both made the decisions about those issues in a way that had to do with what was for themselves, and not changing for the other. And I liked that as well.
I’m sad knowing we won’t get another book, as usually there were three in a series, and I know we have at least one more person to get their HEA in this group of friends. But in the end, I am happy to have had this story and spend some time with characters that I have enjoyed meeting through this world.
I opted to review Be Our Ghost the second I read the title – I love a good pun, and this one is great. I loved the storytelling and the mild, spooky vibes (I’m so not a horror fan!) but then Rachel got in touch with some awful news that did take the shine off – author Carla Luna passed away suddenly before the book was due to be published.
However, with Carla’s family choosing to go ahead with publication in her honour, I felt like giving a good review would be mine. And, honestly, having read Be Our Ghost, the romance world has lost a light.
While Be Our Ghost is the second of the Duchess Hotel series, it reads perfectly well as a standalone, which is always a good thing. Readers are pulled instantly into the story by bartender Knox – a bit unusual, as we’re normally introduced to the heroine first, but it works in this case. The prose here is fast and terse, well-reflecting the grumpy hero, and is frankly delightful.
Then we’re introduced to Charlie and things slow down a little. I’m used to characters’ voices being different, but this is the first time that the prose sounded different. It genuinely seems like the chapters are written by the characters that they’re about, and I loved that.
The slow burn romance is delicious and has a fabulous, spicy payoff. And honestly, I was thrilled for the characters when it happened. Knox is a grump, but he has reasons for being so, and I was really rooting for him to leave his past behind and find love. Especially with someone as adorable as Charlie.
With the ghostbusting and spooky vibes, Be Our Ghost is a perfect autumnal/Halloween read. It’s best enjoyed with the lights down low, in a comfy chair, under a cosy throw while the fire blazes. A glass of your favour tipple wouldn’t go amiss, either.
It’s full of love and light, and you cannot help but come away with a massive smile and a gooey centre. It’s heart-lifting in the very best way, and I’m saddened to know there’ll be no more of this series or other books.
I don’t usually jump to the second book in a series, but I didn’t realise that this was one. The good thing is that you really don’t have to read the first book to read this one; it works as a standalone book.
This book was a lot of fun with a very entertaining premise. The staff of the Duchess hotel delves into its past to see if they can find any ghosts to try and secure the hotel's place on an episode of a famous paranormal reality show. Of course, the two staff tasked with doing the digging are Charlie and Knox, who happen to be sweet on each other, even though neither of them has admitted it.
The characters definitely make this book; I loved that Charlie threw herself into the project, even though she’s very out of her comfort zone, to get a bit closer to Knox. She is such a lovely character, at times taken advantage of because of how nice she is, but as the story progresses, she starts to show her strength and is passionate about supporting those close to her.
I was excited to see the burgeoning relationship between Knox and Charlie, especially as Knox is a bit of a closed book to start off with. He has a reputation for being a bit grumpy, but that seems to change whenever Charlie is involved, and I enjoyed seeing him open up to her as they get to know each other better.
This is the kind of book that I was happy to keep going back to because it was so enjoyable. It had a little bit of everything too, there was the romance with some sizzling chemistry, the story behind the ghost, which I found really interesting. The ghosts of Knox’s past also added complications to the story, but allowed the characters to grow both individually and together.
Be Our Ghost is a delightful book, and I would definitely recommend it.
This is my first book I’ve read by Carla Luna, actually I should say second as when I realised there was a book prior to this I went back and read that first (you don’t need to this can easily be read as a stand-alone, but I’m more than glad I did). These books are the first series I have read by Carla and I loved every page. I was saddened to learn of her sudden passing previously this year and such a terrible loss, not only to her family and friends, but clearly to the writing world to lose such a talented writer.
Be Our Ghost (and its predecessor Santa Maybe) was a delight to read. Carla writes the kind of books that can lift you on a bad day and make you feel it’s maybe not so bad after all, shines a little light into your day and heart, this is a gift that should never be overlooked and I hope it is some small comfort to her family that her books continue to make a difference to people, make them smile, laugh and can put a rainbow into a dark day.
Be Our Ghost is a great autumnal, Halloween read, it’s a delightful blend of spooky charm and slow-burn romance. Its full is brilliant and witty banter. You have two lovable leads in Knox, the brooding bartender, and Charlie, the sunshine-hearted romantic.
Be Our Ghost delivers both heart-flutters and goosebumps. The chemistry crackles, the ghostly intrigue keeps the pages turning, and the emotional payoff is worth every lingering glance and is rewarded with someThing hot. A perfect read for anyone who loves their love stories with a touch of the supernatural.

My Opinion
Be Our Ghost was a fun read. Whilst it was the second book in The Duchess Hotel series, I have read it as a standalone. Knox has an interesting backstory and I really enjoyed learning about the ghost. A lovely Halloween novel.
This second book in the Duchess Hotel series, set in Victoria BC, also centers around Halloween, while the first book was set around Xmas. Be Our Ghost was a delightful fall read, with a slightly paranormal vibe, not at all spooky, just a good ghost story. It's the second in the series, but absolutely can be read as a standalone, although I also very much enjoyed the first book.
Charlie is the sunshiny front desk supervisor who loves romance, parties, holidays and is kind and friendly to everyone, especially Knox, the cynical, grumpy bartender/manager of the hotel's in-house bar. The two of them have been dancing around each other for months now, both too shy to make a move or indicate their interest, until they are asked to work together to determine whether the hotel has ever had any paranormal activity that would make a good story for a TV show that is interested in filming an episode at the hotel over Halloween.
Much to their surprise, when they dig into the hotel's history they find plenty to investigate, which finally gives them an excuse to open up and share their feelings. From there, it doesn't take long for love to find them. I love a good ghost story, especially if it's not particularly scary and this book had the perfect vibe for both romance and a little ghostly mystery.
I'm sad that Carla Luna passed away just after this book was finished, but this makes a lovely legacy for her to leave with.
A haunted hotel, a bartender with a secret past, and the living embodiment of sunshine at the front desk: a delicious combination from the pen of Carla Luna! I absolutely devoured this steamy slow burn from start to finish. Yes, I'm a little biased because I spent a year living in Victoria, but the heart of this romance is the characters - specifically, Knox and Charlie.
I loved Knox and Charlie. Yes, they've spent the last few years secretly pining for each other, too chicken to take a chance, but they get better. Lots better. I especially liked how they actually communicated with each other through the ups and downs, and even when they made mistakes and faced conflict, they hashed it out like adults. There was just the perfect balance of external plot conflict (the hotel), external relational conflict (Knox’s past, Charlie’s parents), and internal relational conflict (just kiss already!). The ending was so incredibly satisfying on all fronts. Also, despite not being a focus I couldn't help but notice that all the food was lovingly described throughout the story.
This is second in the series about the Damsels of the Duchess Hotel and I can't wait to read more about them!

Be Our Ghost is the second book in the Duchess Hotel series. Charlotte "Charlie" Fraser and Knox McIntyre are employees of the Duchess Hotel and concede to the whims of their new GM, Preston. When Knox's friend Logan notifies Knox that he's coming to town as a field story producer for the host hunting show Canada's Most Haunted, the Duchess is now on their list of investigations. Partnered with Charlie, they work together to investigate the boutique hotel's past in hopes of finding a ghost story worthy of a paranormal investigation. If a relationship blossoms then that's definitely a bonus.
This is a cute contemporary romance with a smattering of the paranormal. There is so much depth and so many layers to each character. I loved watching Charlie and Knox's romance unfold. It's not without issues, some theirs, some because of others. There are shared secrets, baggage from the past, and wonderfully described present-day happenings.
The characters and story are well-developed and well-written. I loved being back in the world created by Carla Luna. The world-building is well-crafted and I was able to visualize the entire story. This book doesn't just focus on a romance or the paranormal but includes other themes that provide additional layers of realism to the story.
I thoroughly enjoyed this friends-to-lovers (with bonus mutual pining!) romance with paranormal elements. It's a fun return to the Duchess Hotel, and we get to see characters we met in Santa Maybe, book 1 of the series. However, reading the first book isn't necessary to enjoy Be Our Ghost.
Charlie and Knox are coworkers in a Victoria hotel and are asked to work on a project together to bring a ghost-hunting show to the hotel. As they pursue the project, there's lots of twists and turns with a domineering boss, complicated families, a visit from his ex and a former friend, and uncovering a ghost story. Knox and Charlie's romance burns slowly, but the end is truly satisfying.
This book put me in the mood for cozy sweaters, hot cider, and a fire in the hearth to take away the ghostly chill. I adored it!
It was the perfect time to read this book, with its autumn and spooky themed storyline. This is part of an interconnected series but can easily be read as a standalone. I’d say the main trope for this book is romantic comedy. With side tropes of cozy mystery, paranormal (ghost hunting) and workplace romance. I only wished it stated whose POV it was at the beginning of the chapter. The main characters were the perfect example of grumpy x sunshine and honestly so cute to read about. I give this book a 4 out of 5 stars.
This is the perfect spooky season read if you're not a fan of horror.
In my review of the first book 'Santa Maybe', I'd previously likened the opulence of the Duchess to The Overlook Hotel from The Shining...it seemed even more apt this time round!
I read a horror a few weeks back where the premise was quite similar with a fake haunting and a TV crew recording for a series... THIS WAS WAAAAAY BETTER! It had likeable characters, a spicy simmering romance AND A GHOST!
Knox and Charlie are a sweet grumpy sunshine pairing. With much encouragement from the Damsel’s sunshiny Charlie takes on the task of helping Knox to get a Haunted reality tv show to film at the Duchess. Knox is partly grumpy because he is hiding from his past, a traitorous friend and a broken heart. Charlie helps him realise he has nothing to be ashamed of and likewise he provides the support she needs to venture out

This was such a great book. It was quaint, hot, and a perfect spooky read for October.
Luna did such a through job researching the ghost hunting industry as well as that of television writers. Her character development of Charlie and Knox was so solid.
I'm so sad the author passed, but glad we have the gift of this book and her others as her legacy.
Charlie and Knox both work at the Duchess Hotel. The hotel is expecting a busy month in October. To add to fun a paranormal reality show wants to film at the hotel. This is book two in this series, I had not read the previous one but it seems to stand alone. Charlie and Knox were cute together. I loved the ghost story! There’s a little spice to heat the story up too. Definitely add to your October reading list
