How do you hunt monsters, stop rogue witches, and protect lost orphans… when you’re on trial for treason?
Lady Gwen St. James, New London’s notorious black sheep, has never been one to follow the rules. But now, with the city facing an imminent faerie invasion and assassins closing in to silence her, Gwen must fight not just for her freedom, but for the fate of everyone she loves.
To protect her home and family, she’ll have to forge uneasy alliances with former enemies, uncover the conspiracy threatening the city, and confront a bitter truth–the people she trusts most may be the key to her downfall.
Nicole has been a soldier, photographer, freelance writer, and artist, but she truly found her home as the author of stories about magical worlds in which ordinary people become heroes through extraordinary circumstances…always with a little romance thrown in.
When she’s not writing fantasy novels or creating fantasy art, Nicole spends time with her husband and three boys, climbing, camping, hiking in the New Mexico wilderness, and daydreaming about chocolate chip cookies.
We start the fifth book in the Gwen St James series from where book four ended. So yes, we open up with a major twist that left me reeling when I had finished book four and I was so happy to finally find out if things were as dire as I imagined. And they were but not in the ways I had thought about.
The story of the fifth book turns everything a full 360 degrees around and the ups and downs of the rollercoaster were definitely in motion throughout the book. I couldn’t really stop reading even if I was scared to find out what was going to happen next (and I mean this as the highest compliment as possible!). The world of New London is shaken to its core and the pressure is boiling. I love it.
The found family is so strong with this book and I feel it grows stronger with each installment we get. But what I love most is that the family is strong but it’s not infallible and we get moments where things get messed up and people act accordingly to that. Especially Gwen and I think those moments where she needs to admit that she gets things wrong are ones that are written so beautifully.
The ending of book five wasn’t any easier, I was flabbergasted at it. How can we end there? How?! So many major twists happened in this book right at the end and I felt like the wind had been knocked out of me. I need more now. I need it.
What a rollercoaster of a tale! In "Forsaken", the fifth book in the Gwen St. James Affair by Nicole McKeon is a fantastic addition to this Gaslamp Fantasy series. The action and stakes are exponentially higher and riskier as some of the story threads from the proceeding novels burst into a page-turning tale that's worth the ride. In "Forsaken", Lady Gwen and company are facing almost impossible odds trying to protect New London from a pending Fae invasion, rogue witches and supernaturally-enhanced cult members; all while she recovers from an assassination attempt. In between the scenes of tense and explosive action, McKeon takes time to deliver fully-developed characters dealing with traumatic circumstances with heart and courage. A must-read for all fans of the genre and people looking for a spicy, emotion-packed, wild adventure. Highly recommend. Note: you will need to read the other books in the series first.
This instalment had at the edge of my seat from beginning to end. So many questions answered. So many more questions about the outcome. I can wait to see how Gwen, Lia and their band of friends fight for their freedom.
This series is amazing. Each book gets better than the last. Highly recommend if you enjoy fantasy mysteries. Can not wait for the next book to come out!
