Hollow Hearts: A Small Town Grumpy/Sunshine Romantic Suspense

Rate this book
Emma Thomas never intended to stay in Hollow Creek forever, just long enough to bury her past. It seemed like the perfect place to start over now that her old life was behind her—but the past refuses to stay buried.

The small town isn’t just a place to hide. It’s also the last fragile thread tying her to her foster brother, who vanished years ago during a summer trip to Hollow Creek. But the case went cold, the search abandoned, every lead a dead end—until now.

As a descendant of one of the founding families, Chief Mark Taylor has spent his whole life in Hollow Creek, a place renowned for its supernatural secrets and buried scandals.

Then Emma moves to town—beautiful, fiercely guarded, and impossible to ignore. For years, he tells himself to keep his distance. But when her past comes knocking at his door, the last thing Mark wants to do is turn his back on the one person he’s been trying so hard to resist.

So when their pasts and presents collide, Mark finds himself at a crossroads. Will he let old ghosts dictate his future, or will he finally break free and fight for the woman who’s been right in front of him all along?

Whew… Mark & Emma had me in a chokehold!

Let me tell you…this was the spicy, emotional, satisfying wrap-up I needed from the Hollow Creek trilogy. I’ve been waiting on Mark and Emma to stop playing and finally admit what we all knew: they were made for each other. The tension - delicious. The spice - perfectly seasoned.

This book gave me everything: old secrets, danger, romance, and a man who knows how to protect what’s his. Mark brought the heat and the heart. Emma’s backstory hit hard, but watching her power through and still have that sass? I was rooting for her the whole time because she’s a badass - period.

Also, shoutout to the girl gang in this series: Kate, Lily, and Emma…I want to be their friend group SO bad. The way they show up for each other? Top tier.

The creepy mansion + hidden tunnels + cemetery combo had me wide-eyed at 1am flipping pages like my life depended on it. Perfectly amount of mystery.

If you’ve read the first two books, you are NOT ready for how good this one is. If you haven’t started the series yet…run, don’t walk. Hollow Hearts was everything I didn’t know I needed. 10/10.

After reading the first two books in the series I was so excited for Emma and Marks story and OH.MY.WORD I was not disappointed.

I love this series so much!!!!

And Mark, holy moley, what a dirty mouth you have. He is *chefs kiss*. He is definitely my favourite MMC from this series.

Noah, Oliver, Kate and Lily have a strong presence this book which is great and the kitten and Marks reaction to it is priceless.

Great story, the mystery elements and fabulous spice.

This is a really great read.

She’s a small-town realtor with a mysterious past. He’s a small-town sheriff with a jaded one. Both are stubborn. Both are strong willed. Both are hot for each other.
We meet Mark and Emma in the first book of this series, “The Hollow” as side characters to the MCs. Then, we gradually learn more about them and it allows for character development. By the time I finished book two, I couldn’t wait to get started on their story. Mark has this strong and safe vibe about him and I have to be honest, the first time he said “Good girl” to Emma, I had to pause and catch my breath. I already liked his character at this point, but then you add in the dominance factor. WOW!!! Without giving spoilers, I just have to say, if you liked the spice in the first two books, you would absolutely lose your mind with this book. Mark is my new favorite hands down MMC.
Emma’s past has returned and proven deadly. Mark will do anything and everything in his power to protect her. Despite her background and expertise, she must learn to submit to Mark and allow for his help. Her past surprised me in some respects, and she ended up being a powerhouse. I also loved her sassiness, and Mark is just the man to put her in her place.
This final installment of the series also continues the discoveries of the town’s secrets to include an abandoned and spooky mansion with hidden compartments and an underground tunnel that leads to a cemetery. What they find underneath might surprise you.
I highly recommend this series. I also recommend it for mature audiences only due to sexual content.
I received this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Hollow hearts

A great conclusion to the trilogy. I really enjoyed finally getting the relationship we watched the couple get together that has been teased in the last two books. The spice was good. I felt like the payoff of what happened was totally worth reading all the books.

Absolutely loved this one, the best of all 3. Wow, mark, what can I say, the quiet ones always surprise you. He was down right dirty and oh so sexy. Getting to learn about Emma's past explained so much. I loved how all the mysteries got wrapped up. I'm sad this series is over but I very much enjoyed them

Emma Thomas had only intended to stay in Hollow Creek for a short time, just long enough to bury her past. But, once she got there, Hollow Creek just seemed like a great place to start over, especially now that Emma had put her old life behind her – but you can never leave your past behind forever, it can never be buried forever.

Hollow Creek isn't only a place to hide. Emma knows that this town is the last fragile thread that ties her to her foster brother. He had vanished years ago while they had been on a summer trip to Hollow Creek. But, like so many cases, his case had gone cold, the search for him was abandoned, each lead they got ended in yet another dead end – at least until now.

Chief Mark Taylor was the descendant of one of the founding families, he's spent his entire life in Hollow Creek, a town that was renowned for its supernatural secrets and all its buried scandals.

And then Emma moved into town – she's beautiful, fierce, but guarded and she's impossible to ignore. For years Mark has told himself to keep his distance. But, when Emma's past suddenly comes knocking on Mark's door, Mark knows that he can't turn his back on the one person he's been trying for years to resist.

When Emma and Mark's past and present collide, Mark finally realizes that he's at a crossroads. Is he going to let the ghosts of his past dictate his future, or will he break free of his past, of the shackles that hold him back and finally fight for the woman he's loved for years, the one woman who's been right in front of him all along?

Hollow Hearts is the 3rd book and the conclusion of the Hollow Creek series by Lara Bruni. I read the first two books in this series and loved them. So I was so excited to get my hands on this book. I have been waiting for this book, it's finally Emma and Mark's story and my oh my, I can honestly say that I was not disappointed in this book.

I have loved this series so much and I am just sorry that it is coming to an end. I can honestly say that I wish it would keep on going. I've come to think of these characters as friends and family and I am sorry that their stories are coming to an end, I am just so happy that I'll be able to return when I re-read these books.

Mark is a grumpy dirty dirty-mouthed man. His character is just perfect. I just love him so much.

Emma, is strong and intelligent and I love that she believed that she would eventually find out what happened to her foster brother. I honestly think that she was going to find him alive, I prayed that she was going to find him alive. She had such grace and dedication and observation. She didn't miss a thing. And the way that we finally get the chance to learn about Emma's past and everything that happened to her that summer. I loved that we finally got to know the truth.

I loved this story, the mystery was amazing and just fabulous. And the spice. Oh, the spice was so spicy hot.

And I love the way that Lara brought back Noah, Oliver, Kate, and Lily. They have this beautiful presence in this book that adds so much to the story. And the kitten, oh I loved that little kitten (of course, I am a cat person so I couldn't help but fall in love with the kitten) and Mark's reaction to the kitten is just so exquisite.

I loved that this story finally gave us the story that has been teased and has tormented us for the last two books. We finally get the payoff that we've been waiting for over the last two books and honestly, I have found that the wait was so worth the wait and it was worth reading the last two books to get to this point.

I loved how Hollow Hearts wrapped up and brought together all the mysteries of the series, and finally wrapped them all up. This was the perfect ending to the perfect Lara Bruni series.

I have to recommend Hollow Hearts but more than Hollow Hearts I have to recommend the entire Hollow Creek series. This is an amazing series. And I have to recommend Lara Bruni. She is a fabulous author and she has written some amazing books that deserve to be read. And you really should read them. They are just great books.

Told in 3rd person dual POV

Perfect conclusion to the Hollow Creek Trilogy series.
Emma Thomas is a woman full of surprises, and a backstory worthy of the big screen. She's looking to bury her complicated past and start anew as a real estate broker in the town where her foster brother disappeared years earlier. She finds herself investigating dangerous secrets related to the dilapidated Victorian mansion she feels drawn to purchase, the last place her brother was seen. She's also suddenly forced to deal with the even more dangerous ones she's been hiding from her closest friends and the man she can't stop thinking about since she moved to the small town of Hollow Creek 3 years ago.

Police Chief Mark Taylor is a native son of Hollow Creek. Burned out and jaded by a bad marriage, he's been fighting his attraction to Emma since he first laid eyes on her. He wants to be the protector he discovers she doesn't want, but he is the man she desperately needs.

Emma is one of those strong female leads that can take care of herself, and Mark takes the term "heat" up to a whole new level. The story is a full steam ahead thrill ride packed with suspense, passion, and hot encounters that burn up the pages. Mark just might be one of the hottest MMCs in the bedroom department ever. I was actually surprised that his ex ever gave him up in the first place.

There are plenty of hidden dangers and mysteries worth solving. This one definitely doesn't disappoint. The writing is as strong as the two main characters. I could not put it down until I read it through to the end. I was buried in this one almost as deep as the secrets they were fighting so hard to uncover, wrapped up in the action and invested in the plot.

Author Lara Bruni is my new Queen of Steam. Recommend. Recommend. Recommend.

LET ME START BY SAYING THIS SERIES WAS AMAZING! 5 FUCKING PHENOMENAL STARS!!

I absolutely enjoyed every minute of reading these books, I could not put them down for a second, I ran through them all like my life fucking depended on it, I was obsessed and hooked. All 3 books had me on the edge of my seat with heart racing, just needing to turn page after page to see what was going to happen next. The rollercoaster of emotions they put me through was wicked and wild. It's filled with mystery, action, suspense, secrets, angst, danger, banter, puzzles, spice and so much more. The characters where fucking fantastic. The storyline and plot was out of this world and well written. I loved the povs from each character, it made you feel more apart of the story. They will forever live in my head and heart..

Welcome to the small town of hollow creek, a town full of mystery, a town that will call to you! Pull you in and never let go, these characters will take space in your mind and heart and never leave. Every single one of these couples where truly amazing to read, and the adventures they take you on is out of this world. This one is mark and Emma's story and what a story it was!! It was so worth the wait.

Hollow Hearts is book three in the Hollow Creek Trilogy and I must say what a fantastic ending it is. It left me wanting more and I didn’t want to say goodbye to the characters or little town.

Emma Thomas arrives in town with a quiet strength and a past she’s desperate to outrun, but Hollow Creek has a way of pulling hidden truths into the light—and Emma is no exception. Mark Taylor is the quintessential grumpy protector. ( Oh how I just love the grumps!!!) Stoic chief of police. Lifelong local. Descendant of a founding family with more secrets than he’s willing to admit. He’s spent years pretending Emma doesn’t affect him, but the moment her past collides with the darker undercurrents of Hollow Creek, his restraint doesn’t stand a chance. Their dynamic is classic grumpy/sunshine in the best way: her cautious hope softening his rigidity, his quiet loyalty anchoring her when everything feels like it’s slipping through her fingers.

If you love romances built on chemistry, healing, long-buried secrets, and a touch of supernatural mystery, Hollow Hearts is another strong entry in the series. As always, remember to check trigger warnings to make sure it’s a good fit for you. I cannot wait to read what Lara has in store for us next!

As always be mindful of trigger warnings, what I like you may not.

Happy Reading!

This was the last book in the Hollow Creek Trilogy, and it was such an enjoyable read.

In this book we experience the story of Emma and Mark's story. A woman trying to make a new future for herself, while haunted from her past, and a Man who is also holding back from a future due to lingering ghosts of his past.

I loved that this story was a very real representation of how two people who are drawn to each other, yet struggle to overcome those inner demons that hold them back. Both have a past, but will they be able to work through those issues to have their happy ever after?

I loved the town mystery in the back ground of the story as well. In each story, there has been some link with the characters, to the town, either because of family ties, or they are drawn to the town for answers, and this story wraps all those connections up neatly.

This was such an enjoyable read, and I am looking forward to exploring more stories from this author.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read it.

A hot spicy romantic mystery

Author Lara Bruni didn't let me down with her final book in her Hollow Creek book series.
She really packs a wallup in creating exciting and enjoyable characters. The protagonist, Emma, has a secret past life that she is trying to keep hidden from the people in the small town of Hollow Creek.
She came to the town temporarily to hopefully find closure on her brother's disappearance.
Little did she know that secrets don't stay buried for long and soon things go unexpectedly wrong after she buys a victorian house near town.
Emma is head strong and determined to continue to find her brother along with helping her friends solve a century old crime following a diary that was found.
I love reading Lara Bruni's novels, and I was excited to have finished reading this 3rd book in the series . I look forward to reading more from this author.

This book had the perfect characters, a mystery to solve, drama, suspense, spice, love, and a HEA - what more could a reader want?! Add in the perfect mmc in Mark and the guarded but lovely Emma and this is a win. Readers finally get the conclusion to the overarching mystery and all unresolved paths are closed. Excellent trilogy with a satisfying conclusion.

This is the third book in the series.

The FMC's brother went missing in the town years ago, she tries to start over and put the past behind her, but it doesn't seem to want to let her forget.

I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend reading it.

The story is evocative and emotionally resonant, with just enough spice and suspense to keep pages turning. It’s a story about facing the past, embracing vulnerability, and finding love in unexpected places. The characters are well developed and assuming you've read the previous novels you get the bonus of tied up loose ends. In this novel the minor characters do remain just that. However the story is a rich tapestry of supernatural, mystery and romance....
