THE PLOT
Maggie the nosey neighbour spots some movement in the house next door—the problem? The owners are supposed to be gone for a month. Sarah is playing house, but why?
MY OPINION
I think the rating says it all. Forced, amateur writing. Over the top plot with despicable, shallow characters and illogical decisions. Lifetime movie ass ending.
I knew I was in for it early on when I read this literary masterpiece of a sentence:
"After answering the door, and talking to Maggie Scott, Sarah went back to the kitchen and got out her burner phone, the one she'd purchased just a month before."
EXCERPT: At the front door Sarah peered through the peephole and recognized Maggie Scott, the old lady who lived next door. Too bad. She'd been hoping not to cross paths with any of the neighbours.
'Yes?' she said, opening the door with a warm smile.
'Oh!' Maggie took a step back in surprise. 'I don't know you.'
'No,' Sarah said in pleasant agreement. 'I'm the house sitter. You must be Maggie Scott. I've heard so much about you.'
ABOUT '214 PALMER STREET': When Maggie sees the beautiful Venetian blinds moving in the Caldwells’ front window, she freezes. Her favorite neighbours Cady and Josh are away, so who is in their house?
The pretty young woman who answers the door tells a convincing story. She’s Sarah. The house-sitter. Just here for a month. An old friend of Cady’s who needed a place to stay. She’s pleasant and warm, and Maggie wanders back to her house thinking she might have made a new friend. Yet she can’t help but wonder why Cady never mentioned Sarah.
What Maggie doesn’t know is that on the other side of the door, Sarah is starting to panic. No one was meant to see her at 214 Palmer Street…
MY THOUGHTS: I abandoned this book just short of halfway. It starts well, but soon descends into mediocrity. It's all largely improbable and implausible and there wasn't enough suspense to keep my interest.
I failed to become invested in either the characters, who were poorly developed, or the plot, which was largely predictable and uninspiring.
My listening to the audio - and I have nothing against the narrator, Stacey Glemboski, who I thought did a more than adequate job - was accompanied by much eye rolling at the 'twists' and muttering at the absurdity of it all. After taking a two day break from this read, I realized I had absolutely zero interest in recommencing and abandoned it, something I don't do lightly.

This is the second book that I have read lately where I cannot say that I like it or that I didn't like it. I am ambivalent about it. I also don't think that the narrator did the book any favors.
This is a book about secrets, suspicions, relationships and how the past never wants to stay in the past.
Someone has hit Sarah over the head with a rock on her Patio, she doesn't know who and once the ball gets rolling in this book, I could not believe any of the characters put it together especially her husband! Grr....
I won’t go too much into the plot - But there is a nosey neighbor and a woman who is in someone's home and has a plausible story for being there. Why is she there? Why does she have suspicions?
Why indeed!
So, as I mentioned I am quite ambivalent about this book. There are just too many things that dragged this book down for me. The believability of the characters, my not feeling any connection to them or being able to care about what is going on with them, etc.
There were parts that weren't half bad and there were parts, that I just rolled my eyes. I generally love all Bookouture books, and I was shocked that this one just wasn’t for me. Reviews are all over the place with this one, so read some others and decide for yourself if you want to visit 214 Palmer Street.
Thank you to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
Ugh what a snoozer. I was so excited by the premise and got off to a great start. However, I forced myself to keep reading I became bored by this predictable unthrilling thriller. The characters annoyed me and the ending was also predictable.
A nosey neighbor notices a woman standing inside her neighbors house on 214 Palmer Street. That’s weird she thinks. Cady and Josh are supposed to be on vacation. So who is that in their house? Naturally she strolls over and knocks on the door. A young woman named Sarah answers with some explanation of being an old friend of Cady’s who is house sitting while the couple is away. The nosey neighbor is perplexed yet satisfied with the answer and goes home.
Inside 214 Palmer Street Sara is anxious and begins to panic. No one was supposed to see her. What happens next is a course of events which begs the question: do you every really know who you are married to? And can you truly trust them?
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
Sarah Aden and her husband Kirk were happy together – Kirk adored his new wife while Sarah felt a happiness and contentment she’d never known before. The night Sarah arrived home from work, with Kirk not home yet, and she stepped outside, was where things changed for Sarah and those surrounding her. Being knocked unconscious by an unknown assailant, and Kirk finding Sarah when he arrived home was a dreadful shock. Sarah’s time in hospital and subsequent treatment, left Sarah feeling at times, nauseous, dizzy and not sure of her mental capabilities anymore.
When Sarah went to housesit at 214 Palmer Street without telling Kirk where she would be, without telling anyone, she wondered if she was doing the right thing. But she had to know the answers to the questions circling around inside her head. If she was ever to be happy again, she needed the truth. But what was the truth? What had happened in the long ago past?
214 Palmer Street by Karen McQuestion is a twisty psychological thriller which I enjoyed. I found the middle part to be somewhat slow and drawn out, which could have been tightened up by a good editor, but the ending was fast-paced and chilling! Sarah was a likeable character, but boy, there were some nasty ones! I’ve only read Dovetail by this author before, and loved it, and have a couple more on my TBR. Going on Dovetail – an historical novel – 214 Palmer Street isn’t the author’s best, but still worth recommending.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
Imagine your laundry basket is overflowing, your boss is unhappy and the kids/cats/partner/neighbors are acting out. Yet the sun is shining and you decide to take a break, head out to the beach for a day of fresh air. Then this is the book you want, next to your sunscreen and pack of cookies.
It is an easy read, with only four main characters: the protagonist Sarah, her best friend Clarice, her hubby and his best friend, who is also the bad cop in town. An old mystery is being brought up by Sarah's mother in law and she decides to investigates. Yes, it is easy, it flows and there is absolutely nothing interesting happening, that is why this is an absolutely perfect beach read. Your thoughts can wonder over the white sands and golden reflection on the water, while your eyes are still following sentences and yet, you will not miss a clue or any red herring.
Truth be told: I wasn't on a beach when I read this in a day, but in bed with the flu, reading in between fever spikes. Also perfect for this kind of day.
A sincere thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for an ARC in exchange of an honest review.
Sarah is hit in the head with a rock one day on her patio. After her return from the hospital she is still not herself and her husband Kirk wants her to quit her job and stay home. An investigation into the accident is done by Kirk's old high school friend and policeman, Gavin. As Sarah learns more about her husband's past and his relationships, she discovers he has a lot of secrets and that includes what happened at 214 Palmer Street. Sarah is on a mission to figure them out.
This was my first book by Karen McQuestion and will not be my last. I loved that it was very engrossing but also a quick read. I appreciate that the suspense was held high throughout the story and the characters were developed in great detail. The writing is really top notch! If you are looking for a quick and easy mystery, 214 PALMER STREET is a great one!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This review will be posted to my Instagram Blog (@coffee.break.book.reviews) in the near future.
Why is Sarah in the house when the owners are not there?
We meet characters with secrets, a house with secrets, a nosy neighbor, and many twists and turns.
Sarah was hit on the head in her backyard one day, and her husband found her after work. She has some memory issues and can't remember what happened, but someone must.
And someone must know what happened at 214 Palmer Street that caused Sarah to get hit on the head.
We follow Sarah, Kirk, and an unnamed person in alternating chapters telling past and present events.
Ms. McQuestion has given us another wonderful mystery that will have you not wanting to put the book down.
The ending will have you on edge and happily satisfied.
This book was given to me by the publisher via NetGalley for an honest review.
This book was disappointing! With an interesting premise and a good start, I was hoping this to be good, but nah, the plot kept getting predictable and lethargic, and went completely downhill post the 50% completion mark. A story that begins with Maggie Scott spotting a strange woman in her neighbour’s house who seems to know everything about the owners and Maggie as well (thanks to cyber stalking), and calls herself their house-sitter, could have been dealt in a much better way. As a reader, I hate it when the author tries to spoon feed me the clues. Give me a complex plot, drop subtle clues and let me work my way out. This is exactly what McQuestion got wrong for 214 Palmer Street.
Sadly, the characters had no depth and took ridiculous decisions which made me stop and sigh a few times. There were so many things/events beyond any logical reasoning: why Sarah chose to trespass Cady’s property instead of confronting her husband, or why Gavin exhibited the unpopular machete at his place and even demonstrated it rather proudly, or why Phil thought helping fulfill Sarah’s unreasonable plan was completely okay - well, we’d never know. I did find Stephanie interesting for most part, but like everything else, she got predictable and boring too.
Overall, a quick read, not quite the one that’ll amaze you.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC in exchange for my honest review. Publication Date: April 6th, 2022.
1.5/5🌟.
TW: Assault, Death of a child, Murder, and Stalking.
The blurb doesn't really give you much to go on. You would think Maggie plays a big part in the book, but we hear about her like twice, so that was odd.
There's a bunch to follow along with ~ a now and then timeline, "Her" and just about every character tells a bit of the story. There were a couple different mysteries going on too. I did have the "Her" figured out before it came to light. Also, I called what happened with Jeremy pretty quickly. Didn't really care for the why of the who in the whodunit with the rock at all.
Childhood friends ~ Kirk, Gavin and Clarice were all unlikable characters. Phil seemed like a nice fella and Judy was a great MIL.
My heartbeat did begin to pick up a little around the 70% mark, but then slowed back down and the remainder of the book sort of dragged and I was ready for it be wrapped up. I was pleased with how it ended right before the epilogue.
It was a quick, but slow going at times, read. I would give this author another try.
*Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and Karen McQuestion for the ARC. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review*
well I did not expect this turn of events when I started this book. some stranger in a house that obviously does not belong to here. is she really the housesitter that she claims to be??? In my humble opinion one better goes into this book without knowing too much. just take time to get to know the characters and their stories. it all comes down to a well paced plot with a very satisfying end!!! I particularly enjoyed the narration and thank #NetGalley and #Bookouture Audio for an advanced listening copy
enjoyed this fast paced psychological thriller. While I guessed a lot of it, it was a somewhat different spin on this type of book. Would read more by this author
A thriller about a house, a woman, her husband, and his childhood friends. 214 Palmer Street feels like a unique debut, rather than the work of a seasoned author. While the storyline is certainly clever, with secrets between friends bubbling to the surface, it isn't written as well as it should have been. There's a lot happening in this book, with marital drama, friendship drama, and the outlier perspective of "her." It's cleverly misleading, but far too much going on to keep track of and ultimately, easy to guess due to the amount of information. I liked it, but I didn't love it. Plus, the last four+ chapters should be completely cut out, they take away from the thrill of you trying to guess what really happened, rather than revealing the truth. They feel like an unnecessary epilogue.
Audiobook: The narrator was great, but it would've been better with multiple narrators. It was hard to remember who was speaking, especially with an audio of this length. There's a lot of characters and a handful of narrators, making one voice just not the right fit for this thriller. Otherwise, it was excellent at 1.5x speed.
DNF page 27. Disjointed, choppy writing. She’s going to off the bossy neighbor while squatting. As soon as she mentioned the barrel chested guy in the track suit I said, “I’m Out!”
Well, well, well. I'm really surprised by the load of 1 and 2 star reviews on Goodreads. I don't get it AT ALL.
I loved every second of this book and was always happy to start listening to it again when I got in the car. I was asking myself: Do I have a reason to NOT give this book 5 stars? And to be honest, I don't...
The narrator did a fantastic job, the story had loads of questions and mystery and the ending was THA BOMB. Left me very satisfied, to be honest.
I'm definitely willing to read more by Karen McQuestion!
Now here’s a book which will keep you on your toes!
Maggie is a good neighbour so when she sees movement in the house next door – knowing the couple are on holiday – she goes and knocks at the front door. Sarah introduces herself as the house-sitter and their conversation puts Maggie at ease; however, on her departure, Sarah is shaken .. no one was supposed to know she was living in 214 Palmer Street.
Such a tense read! It’s obvious from the beginning that Sarah is up to something but the reveal is deliciously slow, building the tension. This is one which elicited several gasps from me as I was taken by surprise at the turn of events and it is a cracking read. I wasn’t exactly sure where it was going for quite some time, but even when I did there were twists and turns to keep me glued to the pages. A terrific read, and one I heartily recommend. This is an author who never fails to deliver – an easy 5*.
Does the book sound interesting? (It sure does.) Is it actually? (Not really.)
This for sure is a fast read, something to enjoy on the beach or at the park. But if you expect it to be like "Girl on the train" then don't bother, because it's not. You're introduced to 4 characters and after 15 pages you already know who's fault it is (It's not actually written, but you know that you know). And I just couldn't wait for the book to end just so I could say, that I finally figured out the storyline before the book characters. Felt like I've written that book myself, just how not surprised about the plot I was.
This mysterious story ultimately connects three people who were friends when they were teenagers. As the book opens we find that Sarah is unconscious due to a head injury. We also have Maggie who saw the blinds moving in her neighbor's house. Knowing that her neighbors were away on vacation, nosey Maggie intends on finding out who it was behind those blinds.
Meanwhile, Sarah is now at the hospital and barely remembers what got her there. Who struck her and left her for dead? While this story shifts time frames and characters, the pieces of a complex puzzle slowly fall into place, and this includes why Sarah was hit and who might have hit her.
Lies, secrets and betrayals play right along with intrigue in this captivating and intense read by Karen McQuestion. Something nefarious definitely happened at 214 Palmer Street and in this chilling book twists and turns lead to a shocking conclusion.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
I'm a fan of McQuestion but this one really fell flat for me. I'm glad that at least it was short.
Every twist, turn, and reveal was predictable way before it happened. Sarah was naive nearly to the point of stupid. Kirk was predictable and annoying. Also, some books can fit multiple character POVs and keep them well organized so there's no confusion but not this one.
I'll still look forward to the next book by McQuestion.
We’ve all had a neighbor like this — nosey, well intentioned, but intrusive. Maggie Scott rightfully suspects that something doesn’t add up when a strange woman answers the door at her neighbors house and claims to be their house sitter. The story is told with twists, turns, and clues along the way. A good domestic thriller. #NetGalley #214PalmerStreet
Review for '214 Palmer Street' by Karen McQuestion.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Karen McQuestion, Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous
Publication date 6th April 2022.
This is the first book I have read by this author.
I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching cover and intriguing sounding synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that this book is 'An unputdownable suspense thriller from number one bestseller Karen McQuestion, which will make you question what secrets your own neighbors are hiding… For fans of The Girl on the Train, The Woman in the Window and Gone Girl.' I am a huge fan of 'Gone Girl' so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).
This novel consists of 47 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are medium to long in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is based in Wisconsin, USA 🇺🇸.
This book is written in a mix of third and first person perspective and the protagonists are Sarah Aden, Kirk Aden, Gavin Kramer and 'Her' . The benefits of books written in first person perspective are as long as they are well written it makes you feel that you are being spoken to by the protagonist and it can create more of a bond between yourselves and them. If there are several protagonists you also get to see more of what is going on. The benefits of third person perspective with multiple protagonists are that it let's you see the bigger picture of what's going on and you get to know more characters more, what they are thinking and what they are doing. It feels like you get to see the whole picture and not miss out in anything. To have the benefit of both first and third person perspective ensures you don't miss out on anything.
This book is extremely well written with vivid descriptions that set the scene. The title and synopsis suit the storyline perfectly.
The storyline is fast paced and I was completely absorbed throughout. It is filled with suspense, mystery, romance, tension and so much more. I started reading this in the morning and could not put it down. I loved that you go into this book starting with one mystery and then you dive head first into another and another until your completely surrounded in suspense and tension. I was not expecting the turn of events at all and I loved that everything was wrapped up perfectly at the end leaving you knowing what happened to each character. There is nothing worse than getting to the end of a book with loose ends so a huge congratulations Karen.
It is set over/includes multiple time lines. When books show what has happened in the past and what is happening in the present I find it really helps the reader (if it is well done) understand why things are happening and what has lead to the present activities and decisions. It also shows the bigger picture.
The characters were all strong, well defined and realistic. I became completely invested in not only Sarah but also 'Her' storyline. I won't say who 'Her' is but all is revealed in the book in good time. I wasn't sure what was going on with Sarah at the start but my heart really went out to her. I can't say too much about any of the characters really as I don't want to give too much away. Phil was another likeable character and I enjoyed meeting and getting to know him. I did start writing my thoughts on another character but decided that I will sadly have to leave it here as I realised it was giving too much away. What I will say before I end this though is that each character whether you love or hate them suited their "role" perfectly and "worked together" to make an absolutely fantastic psychological thriller.
This is the first book I have read by Karen but it certainly won't be my last!!! Congratulations Karen on an addictive book I am now off to Amazon to add the rest of your books to my wishlist. Here is to you next success 🥂
Overall a fast paced psychological thriller that will keep you hooked from the first page to the last.
Genres covered in this book include Thriller, Psychological Fiction, Suspense Thriller, Psychological Thriller, Domestic Thriller and Mystery amongst others.
I would recommend this book to the fans of the above as well as fans of 'The Girl on the Train', 'The Woman in the Window' and 'Gone Girl'.
277 pages.
This book is just 99p to purchase on kindle via Amazon or free on kindle unlimited (at time of review) which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!!
Rated 4 /5 (I enjoyed it ) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

A mystery of secrets. I read a lot of historical fiction book, but once in a while I like to take a break and read a good mystery, especially in an audio book. The narrator is always so much more dramatic than my mind. This author is one of my favorite.
Secrets, especially those hidden for year, always come out. You hear of tragic events happening to others, but you never think anything like that could, would or ever has happened to you, your family, or you friends. You never suspect you husband nor your best friend of keeping secrets from you.
When Sarah visits her in laws, sees a picture of her husband when he was young with some friends and her mother in law tells her about the missing boy that was never found she listens and doesn't think anything about it. Then she tells Sarah about the bomb shelter in the back yard that the kids used for a clubhouse and all of a sudden her son wanted it to be locked away and covered over. Then Sarah starts wondering.
When she starts snooping around tragic event happen and what she has started she cannot stop. Secrets are never good and they are always going to cause trouble for someone. This is a story told of those hidden secrets which some thought would never come to light but somehow manage to reveal themselves and cause tragedy.
I listened to the audio book, and the narration was clear and easy to understand, the speed was perfect and the character differences were distinguishable.
I enjoyed this book and I would recommend it.
Thanks to Karen McQuestion for writing a great mystery and for the wonderful narration, to Bookouture Audio for publishing it and to NetGalley for making it available to me.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookature Audio for this advance listener copy in exchange for my honest review.
I didn't really like this one. There were too many characters and too much going on. I was under the impression that Maggie, the next door neighbor, was going to have a bigger role and I'm disappointed that she didn't because she was the only character I felt any empathy for. There were a lot of situations that didn't feel remotely plausible. The connections between the characters were shaky at best and I found myself wondering who characters were. It was just a bit of a mess for me. People don't behave in these ways. There was too much shock value thrown in. The writing seemed all over the place and who the heck is Stephanie?? I just couldn't follow. There were so many characters and twists that I felt like my head was spinning. The narrator did okay. I didn't like her voice for Gavin, but it could have been worse.
Two stars because I was able to finish it. There was just way too much going on.
Thank you Netgalley for the audio copy in exchange for a honest review. Sarah is hit over the head in a brutal attack and is off work. Then she learns her husband's old school friend went missing when they were teenagers and she suspects foul play. A fast paced thriller with twists.
214 Palmer Street by Karen McQuestion is a good psychological thriller that is a very enjoyable read. Told in multiple point of views this is a well written fast paced story that is very hard to put down. It flows beautifully between the past and present. This one has lies, mystery, betrayal, revenge and a ton of secrets! McQuestion knows how to add the twist and turns that make you turn the those pages!! It’s is a highly suspenseful mystery thriller that I recommend you pick up and read!
Thank you Karen McQuestion and Bookouture for an advanced copy of this intriguing novel. Karen McQuestion never disappoints!! #21palmerstreet. #karenmcquestion #bookouture #arc
#FirstLine ~ At first, Sarah disregarded the knocking on the front door.
Oh my goodness, this book was so good! I loved it. So many secrets, so many twists that kept me buzzing through the pages. I was so engrossed that I read it so fast. Be warned that you will have a hard time putting this book down and it will take up residence in your head when you are needing to set it down to get other things done! I even dreamt about it. It is one of those books you will not walk through, rather you will sprint...full speed ahead and will be out of breath when you finish!
Have you ever played ‘whack-a-mole’ at the carnival or fair? That’s what I felt like I was doing while reading this intense thriller! I’d come up with a suspect and think ‘Whack - I’ve got it’ and then in the next chapter another suspect pops up and I think ‘Oh, it’s this one. Whack - I’ve got it' and …. I think you understand the metaphor.
From the first page, readers know that something is ‘off.’ They can’t put their finger on it, but they just have an uneasy feeling. It begins with Sarah, the protagonist, who is suffering from a head injury and trying to make sense of her surroundings. Nothing, it seems, is as it should be. When she takes matters into her own hands and seeks therapy, her whole world changes. Suddenly, she doesn’t know who to trust…but one thing’s for certain, she’s going to find out or die trying!
The author has written a gripping tale about three teenage friends and their desperate attempts to put their past behind them. It’s one of those stories that I imagine could hold people captive if told late at night around a campfire. It’s perfectly creepy. It’s wonderfully plotted, full of twists and nasty characters and, of course, unreliable narrators. The variety of points of view add to the readers’ confusion … who is telling the truth?
You’ll have to read for yourself to discover the secret that 214 Palmer Drive is hiding.
Karen McQuestion fans will be ecstatic to know her new thriller "214 Palmer Street" will be published April 6th. This is one book you do not want to miss!
Senior citizen Maggie Scott, has designated herself to be the "unassigned leader" of nosey neighbors. Maggie has good intentions, but has a reputation as the "eagle eye" of the block. While Maggie's nextdoor neighbors Josh and Cady Caldwell are out of town, Maggie sees movement by the Caldwell's window. True to form Maggie investigates and discovers a woman named Sarah staying in the Caldwell's home. This seems a bit odd to Maggie. Josh and Cady certainly never mentioned to Maggie that they were having a house sitter. Maggie can't help but wonder... is something else is going on at Josh and Cady's house? Who is Sarah?
This story is shrouded in mystery. Readers are left to follow juicy clues dropped along the pages by the author. There are many questions to be answered in this intriguing whodunit. Karen McQuestion has earned her right as a best-selling queen of mystery. Can you figure this one out?
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture, for allowing me to review this spine-chilling e-book! A special thank you to Karen McQuestion for all the delightful hours of reading pleasure you have given me. I will always be a devoted fan of your work! ❤
