From my iCloud storage to now, a published book, I have always thought to put experiences of the dating world into chapters, just like parts of a sweater when someone knits it. Some parts might be hard to knit and not-so-favourite of the knitter, some parts might not have the best colours, and some might be the easiest to get through. However, the knitter must get through each part to make a sweater. Similarly, from the ugliest moments to the ‘butterflies giving’ moments, it is all that makes a relationship what it is.
This book is by no means a self-help guide to get through tough times in the life of a young adult who has recently broken up, but simply an expression of all kinds of emotions a young adult might go through including but not limited to, happy, giggly, satisfied, safe, content, unsure, scared, tired, uncomfortable, left-out, ugly, disgusted, outrageous, seeking approvals, misunderstood, shut-down, belonging, brave, self-dependent and free; because everyone has right to feel all kinds of emotions, none of them are wrong, it is what one does with them.
I also wrote this book for my love of the city I live in, Edmonton, the capital city of Alberta, the city of champions, the city of festivals and the city that I uprooted myself to as a young adult. It has given me everything I imagined and beyond to nurture a girl into a woman. As much as I am the product of my parents’ upbringing, this city has shaped me into the person I am today in the best ways possible, artistically.
Finally, from my iCloud notes to a book in your hands, I hope you can find at least one thing you can relate to or one thought that you can seek refuge in, knowing that you are not alone and that it is just a part of your journey.
This was a fabulous debut novel for Perrywinkle Khokhar. It gives insight into the life of young woman, who has immigrated from Indian to Canada - and the relationships she formed upon arrival.
This was easy to read, flowed well and had lots of cool cultural connections to Penny’s Indian culture. It was easy to keep track of the array of characters, and the story takes place over the span of around a year, making it chronologically easy to track ad well. Khokhar makes a lot of connections to her new city, Edmonton, highlighting landmarks, addresses and familiar hot spots that locals will enjoy reading about.
