Full disclosure, I went into this book with a strong prejudice against crypto—it is highly misunderstood, poorly regulated and constantly acting as a vehicle for young people to make foolish financial decisions while they try to stay “ahead of the curve.” Needless to say, I viewed crypto in a strongly unfavorable light. However, I love to stay on top of emerging technologies, and I had yet to read a fully developed book pro-crypto, and that led me here to The Intelligent Crypto Investor.

What surprised me most was how reasonable John Hargrave’s argument is throughout this book. This isn’t another hype-loaded, moon-rocket promise of instant wealth. Instead, it feels like a reasonable conversation with a well-read financial mentor who happens to believe that crypto deserves a small, disciplined seat at the investing table. Hargrave doesn’t ask you to sell your house for bitcoin; he simply builds a case for why a modest percentage (10% or less) of well-selected crypto assets can improve a balanced portfolio without veering into madness.

He references the current financial world not as the goal, but as frameworks for how to think rationally about a new financial terrain. I found myself nodding along with his comparisons between traditional index investing and the emerging patterns of disciplined crypto accumulation. Even my skeptical brain appreciated the structure: the 60/30/10 model, his three clear metrics for choosing the “winners,” and his emphasis on minimizing risk over chasing thrills.

What gives this book charm is the way Hargrave manages to make accessible an industry usually cloaked in jargon. When he explains staking or institutional adoption, it doesn't feel like a lecture or a sales pitch. It feels like a sincere bridge between two eras of finance.

I am still not fully converted into a crypto evangelist (that might be asking too much), but I did feel something rare: informed curiosity and grudging respect for a well-formed pitch. Hargrave makes a surprisingly compelling case for how crypto could evolve from a highly speculative playground antic into a disciplined component of modern investing. For anyone sitting on the sidelines, this book might just be the balanced entry-point you didn’t know you needed.

Thank you to NetGalley, RBmedia, and John Hargrave for providing an ALC.

I want to be honest from the start. I am a complete beginner when it comes to crypto investing. I am not in a position to judge his strategies or economic theories. This is simply my experience listening to the audiobook as someone new to the topic.

At the beginning, I felt a bit skeptical.

As the book progressed, that skepticism slowly shifted. I started to see the logic behind his approach, and I appreciated his emphasis on financial responsibility.

There is a lot of background on the history of crypto, along with practical suggestions and references to different platforms and resources you can use to do your own research.

The audiobook narration is enthusiastic and charismatic, which makes it easy to stay engaged. At the same time, there is so much information that I would definitely want the physical book to revisit the material later.

I also really appreciated the final part of the book. The last chapters go beyond explaining what crypto is and look more broadly at where crypto, finance, and the global economic system could be heading. I liked how the author connects the past, the present, and possible futures. Even though this is clearly his point of view, I found it genuinely interesting.

Overall, from a beginner’s perspective, this is a challenging but thought provoking read, and one I would personally consider buying.

I got this book after reading about Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and the use of art from budding artists to meet the demand for NFTs in the crypto world, which made me curious to learn more about crypto. I was a complete novice and had no experience with crypto before starting. Furthermore, this was the first time I got an audiobook, so I was not sure what to expect.

What I found thoroughly surprised me; it was sound and well-balanced advice for investing in general, not only for crypto. It had anecdotal advice on investing strategies that have worked in the past for successful business stalwarts like Jeff Bezos. It is a very interesting listen, and the narration was also very well done, since I always knew when to expect important parts by the way the narrator inflected his voice. Particularly found the short summaries of main points or take-home messages at the end of every chapter and also the main advice at the end of the chapter. It was a great book and I found it to be very informative!

Definitely recommend it to anyone who is curious about investing in the world of digital finance.

I really enjoyed this crypto book. It is simple yet not simplistic. Hargrave brings readers closer to crypto investing by offering context, real world examples, and practical advice. The book provides deep insights into crypto investing, emphasizing the risks involved without pushing any specific strategy. It clearly breaks down the different types of crypto investments, helping you invest intelligently.

The book also gives a holistic, fact based view of the global monetary system. I especially appreciated the formulas that imagine a utopian world, one where the monetary system rewards deserving people fairly, rather than being controlled by a privileged few.

Read this book to learn the principles of intelligent investing, understand the risks, and avoid becoming a mere speculator. It is a great read for building your knowledge, complete with inspiring stories
