Return to the magical world of witches, royalty and curses in this spellbinding sequel to Witchspark.
Miss Hegotty's Secret Society of Witches has a lot of work to do.
The Department of Isle-Spark Regulation is up to no good. For Princess Victoria at the palace, this means possibly losing her powers for ever. And for Eglantine Bury, her magical home can't stop sneezing, causing total chaos with each "ACHOO!"
As if that wasn't enough to worry about, Eglantine's house isn't the only magical being falling mysteriously ill. With dragons and gargoyles getting sicker and sicker, the witches will have to use time travel, disguise spells and genie wishes to uncover the truth...before it's too late.
Dominique Valente is the bestselling author of the Starfell series.
She was a journalist for over a decade but thankfully came to her senses and now writes about grumpy monsters, dragons and witches instead.
She grew up in South Africa but now lives along the Suffolk coast in the UK and writes in a green writing shed that takes time to warm up much like her brain. She is powered by coffee, chocolate and stories about magic.
Born with one hand, her books are often subtle love-letters to anyone who has ever felt different or wanted to belong.
I absolutely loved Witchspark (so much so I actually kept the book rather than taking to school) so I begged for a copy of this when it was on Usborne's new releases. Thanks to Fritha for the copy.
Has Dominique let me down in book2, absolutely not!
It's 1834, Miss Hegotty's Secret society of Witches meets at Eglantine's magic house, Huswyvern, in Felixstowe weekly. There are secret portals to get from London. But Huswyvern has a cold, and it's getting worse and when he sneezes things change place. None of the witches has been able to find a cure. Hus keeps moving the page in Eglantine's family spellbook, Grimoire, to a torn out section. But why? Eglantine doesn't think anything of it.
At this meeting, Miss Hegotty decides that she and Miss Luthuli must take jobs in disguise at the Isle Spark Magical Testing Centre. This will allow them to find out what is happening, how girls and poor children are having their magic bound (as Eglantine's was). Princess Victoria and Eoin have problems of their own, a new device has been installed at the palace and it stops all magic within the palace walls. While Eglantine is in London collecting dew soaked weeds, she gets back to the portal just as Hus is about to sneeze, and ends up back in time. Where she can see the child in the library - Lichen, her Uncle, and he's hiding something behind his back, when her mother as a child walks in and sees her and Lichen she asks if Eglantine had helped him 'open it' - but what? Suddenly Eglantine is dragged back to London. Then she enters the portal again, and back to Hus and Arthur the Wyvern butler. He is not happy! But when she explains, he says he never saw Lichen read. So what was it? But it's not the only time she sees this scene - Hus takes her back again - this time she knows Lichen has torn a page from the Grimoire - the page Hus keeps turning to. Things continue to get worse, Hus is not well but nor are any of the other sentient homes. A new member joins the witches group. Myrtle Chan is twelve, her father recently died in a fire at his pub, The Witches Cat, but since then he has been haunting Myrtle and saying the same thing over and over - "I have to warn them" "The fires are connected. I have to tell them about the Witchlight. Before the planets align". Myrtle tells me again and again that she did tell the department. The department that Eglantine's awful Uncle Lichen is now head of. Myrtle is able to tell the witches that she has spoken to many magical creatures have become ill - with flu like symptoms. Are they the same ones Hus has? And does Arthur have it too? Eglantine contacts her father about an 'assignment' she has to complete. Asking if he knows of any curses that can affect the sentient houses. His reply is worrying, especially as she is ill, anyone bonded to the house will die if the house dies! She keeps this information to herself.
They have to find the way to break the curse, but how? Lichen has the curse and the counter curse details!
Really good story, excellent way to continue the story.
It was great to revisit this series, and it was lovely to see how the characters' relationships had grown over time. I loved how the focus of this book was the magical house and other magical buildings falling ill. But what I liked best of all was that it was set 20 minutes down the road from me.
I hope the author will re visit this series again in the future
