What a cracking book! ADHD Rapped Up! works brilliantly on so many levels.
Firstly, it is pitched perfectly to the target audience, with accessible language and more specialised vocabulary explained clearly but without patronising young readers. Both fonts and illustrations are equally appropriate with cartoon style drawings that appeal to the age group as well as a good balance of text, illustration and white space so that the reading isn’t overwhelming. Given that the author also has ADHD, I felt the images of him throughout the book gave the sensation of an adult being on the child’s side throughout. I also really liked his honesty about his own diagnosis which, alongside examples of well known people who have to manage ADHD, gives status to children because they can see famous people or those in authority are just like them.
With ten short, snappy but information packed chapters, I loved the modelling of good teaching practice here. Readers are told what they will discover, the information is given and then there is a brilliant rap to summarise. Not only does this reinforce ADHD information, but it means the book can be used as a teaching tool for rhyme and rhythm too! With QR codes for free audio versions of ADHD Rapped Up! and with examples of Mr G’s fidget break dance, this is a truly accessible and interactive book.
However, I’d strongly advise not leaving ADHD Rapped Up! to children with ADHD. It might be wonderful for them, but I found much to improve my own life as a an adult without the condition, from highly useful breathing exercises to helpful suggestions for routines to manage feelings and behaviour, making ADHD Rapped Up! a really useful tool for any home or institution.
ADHD Rapped Up! is an accessible, helpful and engaging introduction to dealing with ADHD, offering support, guidance and advice through methods suited to those with short attention spans or those who struggle to conform to expectations of society. I thought it was great.
Today I’m giving a big children’s book shout out, ADHD Rapped Up is a marvellous book and it includes a free audiobook and movement break QR code inside. Author Jamie Gilbert is a teacher. He had a late diagnosis of ADHD as an adult. If you think your child has ADHD, they will find the techniques in this book easy to do to help them through difficult times. Or if you readers are like me and want to be educated more in depth of what ADHD is, then this book explains everything you need to know in an interesting easy absorbing way. ADHD Rapped Up is a lovely well written, informative book, with the most gorgeous illustrations. ADHD Rapped Up by Jamie Gilbert is a pure must buy must read.
I absolutely adore this book. Mr G’s explanation of ADHD is fantastic. It’s helped our entire family understand how our neurodivergent brains function differently.
My household consists of my husband, who was diagnosed as a child and an adult, our eight-year-old son and seven-year-old daughter, who’s currently on the path to a diagnosis. I recognise ADHD traits in myself but I am undiagnosed.
Initially, we tried listening to the audiobook on our way to school but found it difficult to engage with. The pacing was either too fast or too slow, making it hard to find a comfortable rhythm. So, we decided to read it aloud on a Sunday morning. I highly recommend this approach; it’s incredibly enjoyable, especially during the movement breaks. We all got up and participated as a family. I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun we had with such an informative book.
This book isn’t just for children with ADHD; it’s suitable for all ages. I believe it’s a must-have for every school and teacher to better understand their ADHD students.
Please visit Mr G’s website and download all the free resources. He offers printable worksheets for both home and classroom use. We’ve found them incredibly helpful, particularly the daily schedule.
Also shout out to the illustrator Matthew Ellerd thanks for the butterflies. If you read the book, you know.
If you, or someone you know is searching for a book to explain ADHD in a positive and fun way, I highly recommend this one. It will be immensely beneficial.
This book is aimed at 9-12 years olds but I thought it was brilliant. It explains what adhd is, ways it can affect you and coping skills to help with living with it. It was done in such a fun way with raps thru the book There is also a qr code to scan at the front of the book to have the book as an audiobook- read by the man himself mr g! And another so you can hear the raps and see the movement break video. This book was informative in the right way, written perfectly for kids but also as an adult I found it interesting. Would definitely recommend this for kids who are going thru the diagnosis process or anyone who wants to learn about adhd. I feel like it’s the kind of book that should be in every school library.
‘ADHD Rapped Up’ is written for children and perfectly pitched for neurodivergent brains with rap video links, movement breaks and fidget features. Jamie Gilbert (‘Mr G Teacher’ on YouTube) breaks down ADHD in easy-to-understand language, as well as explaining other concepts like the ‘fight, flight and freeze response’ and ‘growth mindset’. He also offers tricks and tips to help with regulating emotions, focus and organisation.
This is a fun, positive and concise read that I would highly recommend to anyone wanting to understand more about neurodiversity but it would be particularly useful to children with ADHD.
This book is aimed at children but it really helped me understand ADHD more clearly. It explains things in a kind and easy to understand way. It has helped me understand my son better and also other people I know who have ADHD. It puts into words things that are often hard to explain like emotions overwhelm and why everyday life can feel so hard. I would recommend this to families supporting someone with ADHD.
This book is amazing if you have a child with adhd. I have read it to my son to help him understand his adhd diagnosis. It is set out wonderfully, easy to understand, with great graphics. Not just great for kids but for us adults too. If you have struggled to help your child understand their diagnosis this is the book for you.
Every child needs to read this book regardless of neurotype! Every class needs a copy of this book and every school needs a Mr G! This book is written in a way that is sharp, snappy to the point. It is informative as well as emphatic.
