Still one of my Favorite Webtoons! Gray the White Mamba is ruthless, and I’m soo happy he’s developing friendships with Big Ben and the gang. Also, I know I’m supposed to hate Donald, but as a villain, he’s so incredibly compelling and with the shit, that I can’t help but stan him.
Im not sure what i Think of this webtoon. I read it and i follow it. And i liked the start of it but now i feel like its just violence. In the beginning it had a Point and i wanted to know more of Greys background but after finding out about it i lost intrest. I cant say why.
On the surface, '약한 영웅' has all the making of a run-of-the-mill, high school, action Manhwa, with the coming of age, camaraderie between battle-brothers sort of plot which would feed the need for blood and violence inside you.
As the story progresses, however, we are made privy to the backstories of these characters, and how these young men, came to this violent juncture in their life. Surprisingly, most, even most of the 'bad guys' are more akin to misguided teenagers, than malicious evil lords.
How, through various conflicts and tribulations, these boys manage to forge a bond of fellowship, and share their past traumas, in an almost cathartic way, is a parallel story track.
Gray Yeon, our protagonist, threads a unique line, as the titular 'weak hero', Gray is physically unimpressive, often appearing as if a stiff wind would knock him over. Several of his challengers also make the same presumption. But to see him overcome the wall of physical weakness, and use his keen intelligence and inherent battle instinct, to take down opponents much, much stronger than him, is a treat to behold. But, at the same time, Gray is not a battle junkie. He's studious and responsible student, who just won't let any half-assed delinquent walk all over him, and would never abide to bullying, as he is constantly in remembrance of what that did to his past.
The other members of the main group of heroes, all have their past traumas, owing to unnecessary violence and posturing. (Seeing the general climate of the manhwa, one would be remiss in thinking, that all high schools are filled with violent sociopaths who make bullying a daily extra curricular activity). But all of them are good kids, and in times of need, have each others back, and in times of peace are there as patient listeners.
In particular Ben Park, the resident leader and strong man, who takes a big brother role for Gray and the others, as well as Teddy Jin, the former delinquent who is shown to have an empathetic heart, are notable for their character growth through the series.
With engaging action, stakes, and a roller coaster of character emotions, '약한 영웅' will keep you interested in what happens next.
I absolutely love Weak Hero. It blends some very engaging action with interesting and complex characters, all expressed through some quality art. It's an excellent series and I'm looking forward to reading it for a long time.
DNF. I was obsessed with the adaptation that I tried checking the manhwa. The first volume introduces so many characters all at once that there’s barely any time to get to know or connect with them. It feels like the story expects you to already care about everyone from the start, which makes it a bit overwhelming. I can see the potential, but it just didn’t click for me the same way the adaptation did. Maybe that’s why the manhwa feels different because I went into it expecting the same kind of pacing and emotional buildup the adaptation had. I'll just try again next time.
Baca selepas tonton kdrama. Plot cerita sangat berbeza ye. Tapi, dua-dua best.
Terutama Hayden Ma. Nak je sagat bibir dia yang hitam tu.
After I got up-to-date on Eleceed I had no idea where to go and headed to a reddit on Eleceed. Someone recommended fellow Eleceed-vibes seeking individuals to head to Weak Hero. And boy, was their recommendation beyond amazing. I'm a sucker for a found family trope and the art style is something else altogether. The story is nothing but addictive, I found myself flying through the chapters and each cliffhanger pushing my eyelids to breaking point. I have nothing but praise for this story, justice, fighting and a good dose of heartbreak with wholesomeness. Loved it wholeheartedly.
I'm assuming this is for season 1. I read it and found grey to be very interesting but I'm concerned about how much violence this has. I mean... these kids are just in high school. Is this normal? Where are your parents?
I'm not sure where Season 1 ended and Season 2 began (probably somewhere around the big reveal of Grey's backstory). But wherever it ended, the first season was amazing, like f#cking amazing.
It was a masterpiece. I wish I could own it, just to be sure I would always have it.
Yeah, the artwork is great (and only gets better), but the plot? The character development? The pacing? It's all perfect. Everything is so real, so raw, so relatable. It's perfect.
4.25 ⭐️ I’m going to start of by saying that I read this because of the show and realized how they changed the backstory in the show, and this may be a mistake on my part for watching the show first buttt I did like the show more, but I still loved the 1st season of the webtoon and I am loving the 2nd season so far
This is my favourite webtoon at the moment . The characters are well developed and the friendships portrayed are truly heart warming . I can't wait to see what else the webtoon has in store for us
This story has absolutely no business being as engrossing as it is. It boils down to a bunch of high school kids beating the crap out of each other based on SM 'fantasy sport' style rankings, but is nevertheless hugely entertaining and contains quite deep themes despite the shallow premise.
It was a bit slow-starting, in the sense that there's not a lot to get emotionally invested in for the first 25 or so chapters until we get some context and backstory for the MC, Gray Yeon, and others around him, but after that it really picks up the pace because you can get ultra-invested in Gray's attitude and his journey to becoming a better fighter. Gray is cool and calculating, winning his fights with brains instead of brawn, and fighting to stop injustice or bullying rather than for prestige.
What really stood out in the story is how often people got dragged into fights against their will. Poor Big Ben, who is just a massive goof who happens to be really strong and keeps getting goaded into fights by people who want to test his strength- I really feel for the guy. Similarly, Gray, never picks the fights himself, he just ends people who pick fights with him. Everyone in the story grows tremendously over the course of the webcomic, so there's lots to get invested in.
This is obviously a very violent webcomic. But the dynamics of the fights are always set up in a way that you can root for the MCs without feeling too complicated about the ethics. They're always doing the "right thing" more or less,- defending themselves, their friends, or their values. It's not that the "good" guys always win- plenty of nasty fights break out and The Union is a straight up thriving criminal organisation, but generally speaking, the "bad" characters get their comeuppance eventually. And the worst antagonist of the story, Donald Na, is actually a pretty sympathetic character; he's a top-notch anti-hero.
The art is perhaps a little jank at times, but it works overall. And definitely gets better over the 267 or so episodes.
Overall, this was so excellent. I still kind of can't believe I devoured it so quickly when it feels like there's not enough to the story to deserve such undivided emotional investment and attention. I doubt I'll reread it, but it will definitely go down as one of my all time favs.
I am definitely in a graphic novel binge and this is a good one!
Gray Yeon's unconventional fighting style is the best amongst the traditional brawling fighting styles in the series. I find that there's a lot of posturing from pretty much everyone. Not sure if it's just for the story but almost everyone literally picks a fight with anyone they come across on the street. There is no chapter that does not have at least one character or two who trash talks others or out of nowhere just beats up people, bystanders or not. This is unrealistic to me and got tiring as the story progress. They're high school students and the way everyone just trash talks everyone makes me think how these boys would survive in an adult environment or even as part of the workforce. But that's just my adult brain thinking.
As the protagonist, Gray is obviously the center of the story and I love that! But down the plot the focus was more on the collective and he sometimes just stays in the sidelines which I'm like wait no, give us more Gray! It does culminate to him facing the last boss in the end so I guess there's that.
Despite the action pack scenes and overall plot there are still nuances. I really enjoyed the emotional sub-plots like Gray and Stephen Ahn's relationship and Donald Na's tragic backstory and tbh I enjoyed them more than the central plot. The ending was unexpected and I need to know more after the last chapter! I pray for the creator and their team's health and hope for a part 2.
i'm reading this after watching the kdrama and omg they nailed the 'character that's haunting the narrative' trope. there is a lot more fighting/violence than expected and gray is more unhinged too, which i love.
only rating this one volume but i really enjoyed it. It started slightly slow and confusing which makes sense because it needed to set the tone and theme. it got really good. all i can say is that i will never get over what happened to baekjin my goat
Literally just read this because i watched the drama that was based on this 3 months ago and couldn’t move on. These characters live in my head and heart rent free😭
WHC the adaption has been my hyperfixation since May. And I finally finished the webtoon. I love all of these characters so much and this story will always have a special place in my heart.
