Is blood really thicker than water? This heart-wrenching thriller explores the bond of friendship and what makes a family. The story is gripping, intense, and emotional. I was immediately invested in Alex and his quest for answers about Nikki’s disappearance. The alternating timelines and perspectives kept me immersed in this heartbreaking, compelling, and suspenseful thriller. This is the first book I have read by Diane Saxon, but it definitely will not be the last. I highly recommend this addictive thriller. Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood Books for my ARC.

My third Diane Saxon novel and I’ve enjoyed them all, with The Quiet Wife still holding the spot as my fav so far. I enjoyed this story with Alex, Nikki & Julia - I love it when all of the main characters are likeable. However, rest assured it had enough antagonists in the story to keep the readers on their toes.

I appreciated the concept of alternating between past and present, taking a deep dive into Alex’s past & troubled childhood made my heart ache for him even more. What I loved about Julia’s character, is how she did a kind deed with no expectation of anything in return. She literally saved Alex’s life and I enjoyed watching their bond flourish as he went into adulthood.

Nevertheless, I was still unable to pinpoint the magnitude of how deep the secrets went in this house. The story kept me engaged as Alex searched to find Nikki & the author did a great job at building anticipation as we awaited her fate.

Overall a solid, well written psychological thriller That I would recommend. Thank you Boldwood Books and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy. All opinions are my own.

Cuckoo in the Nest by Diane Saxon is a gripping psychological thriller that weaves suspense with deep emotional resonance. While entirely fictional, the heart of the story lies in the raw and painful background of the main character, Alex. Growing up in an abusive and neglected home, his early life is difficult to read about, both heartbreaking and painfully realistic.

Diane Saxon doesn’t shy away from showing the emotional scars and survival instincts that such a childhood can create. For me, this part of the book hit hard because I know many people who’ve come from similar backgrounds and gone on to become truly remarkable adults. What makes Alex’s story stand out is the unwavering support he receives from Nikki and her mother, Julia, who love and guide him every step of the way. The twists keep coming, making it impossible to predict what will happen next. Honestly, I can easily see future books where Alex transforms into an FBI-like figure, using his unique life experiences to help others.

Alex is the kind of character who stays with you long after the book ends. His quiet resilience and ability to read people make him both endearing and intriguing. He’s not perfect—far from it—but that’s what makes him believable. The trauma from his past has shaped him into someone hyper-aware of danger and able to pick up on subtle cues most people miss. Watching him slowly learn to trust and accept love, especially from Nikki and Julia, is one of the most rewarding parts of the book. You can’t help but root for him, not just to survive, but to thrive.

Nikki is a strong, compassionate presence throughout the story. She’s not just a passive supporter; she’s proactive in protecting Alex and standing up for him when others might doubt him. Her loyalty is fierce, and it’s clear she sees the good in Alex long before he sees it in himself. Julia, Nikki’s mother, is equally important—her warmth, understanding, and gentle guidance create a safe environment Alex has never known. Together, Nikki and Julia form a sort of emotional shield around Alex, helping him find stability in a world that has given him very little of it.

Diane Saxon’s writing is sharp and emotionally intelligent. She knows how to pace a thriller so that the tension never really let’s go, even in the quieter, more reflective moments. The psychological depth she gives her characters makes the suspense all the more powerful, you’re not just worried about the plot twists, you’re invested in the people they’re happening to. This blend of character-driven storytelling and pulse-pounding suspense is what kept me turning the pages.

What really makes this book stand out is the balance between darkness and hope. Alex’s backstory is tragic, and parts of it are difficult to process, but there’s always a thread of possibility running through the narrative. You can feel him evolving as the story progresses, taking cautious steps toward a future that might be better than his past. The ending leaves you both satisfied and curious about what’s next for him, especially if Diane Saxon does decide to create more stories where Alex uses his insight and instincts to help others in an investigative role.

In short, Cuckoo in the Nest isn’t just a psychological thriller—it’s a story about survival, trust, and the power of compassion to change a life. It’s suspenseful enough to keep you hooked, but it’s the characters, especially Alex, Nikki, and Julia, who make it unforgettable.

Title: Cuckoo in the Nest
Author: Diane Saxon
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Publication Date: August 12, 2025

This book tells the story of Alex and alternates between present day and the past, 22 years ago. Reading about Alex's childhood really tugged at my heartstrings. His upbringing was definitely rough.

This was an easy read, and it totally held my attention. I loved the storyline, but have to say the ending was pretty predictable. Even though it was predictable, the heartbreaking tale totally made it worth my time. If I ever need someone to save me, I could only hope to be lucky enough to have someone like Alex in my life.

Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion/review.

As a devoted admirer of Diane's work, I was absolutely thrilled to dive into this latest read!

Alex has moved into a shared house where the atmosphere is tense and their three housemates are distant. Although they feel uncomfortable, their primary goal is not to make friends but to uncover the truth about their missing friend, Nikki. Alex believes someone in the house knows more about Nikki’s disappearance and is determined to find out what happened to her, whether she is alive or dead.

The book unfolds in a dual timeline, allowing us to explore Alex's past while also getting glimpses of Nikki's perspective, which sheds light on the mystery surrounding her disappearance. The narrative primarily follows Alex, but Nikki's insights are crucial in piecing together the puzzle. As we journey through Alex's present, the story unravels beautifully, and everything starts to click into place. It’s a wild ride, and I found myself racing through the pages faster than I could keep up!

Alex is a genuinely likable character, equipped with a moral compass that points due north, despite the challenging circumstances of his upbringing. There’s an abundance of goodness in him that makes you root for his success.

Now, I must admit, the pacing of this book is a bit more moderate than what I typically use to from this author. However, the gripping narrative and the intricacies of the plot made it nearly impossible to put down. I did find myself scratching my head over the title—while "Cuckoo" suggests a menace to other birds, Alex is anything but a troublemaker. In fact, he’s a good-hearted soul navigating a complex situation.

This read is perfect for those who relish a good mystery that keeps you guessing, with just the right amount of creepiness and suspense to keep you on your toes. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Thank you, Boldwood Books, for the digital ARC copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Alex knows his best friend Nikki wouldn’t just disappear. He knows one of her flat mates knows what happened. He doesn't trust any of them... but he is determined to get to the truth.

This was a really enjoyable read. I liked that we get dual timelines of Alex's past and we see how he got to know Nikki alongside the current events as it really sets the scene and makes sense of their relationship with one another. The story is told mostly from Alex's point of view but we get a few glimpses of Nikki's experience in the flat before she went missing.

The flat mates are an unlikeable bunch of people and I thought the author did a good job of bringing all the characters together. Alex's back story was so sad!

There are some good twists and turns at the end of the book and it all resolves in a really satisfying way! Perfect for fans of claustrophobic thrillers.

Huge thanks to the author, Boldwood Books, Netgalley and Love Books Tours for providing a copy of the book to review.

In this novel we meet Alex who's moved into a house share with 3 others, but he's not there because he needs somewhere to live, he's there to infiltrate to discover what happened to his friend Nikki.
The novel is set over 2 timelines, Alex now and Alex when he was a child and first met Nikki. His story is harrowing and heartbreaking.
I love Diane Saxon novels, she has the correct balance between suspense and intruige ramping up the tension as the book progresses.

Diane Saxon delivers a gripping psychological thriller in Cuckoo in the Nest, a story that is as unsettling as it is addictive. From the very beginning, there’s a palpable sense of unease surrounding Alex’s apartment—something isn’t quite right, though the truth remains just out of reach. As Alex struggles to unravel the mystery of his missing best friend, the tension steadily escalates, pulling the reader deeper into a web of suspicion and psychological twists.

What makes this novel so effective is the way Saxon balances atmosphere with character-driven suspense. Alex’s confusion and determination are written in a way that makes you feel his frustration and growing paranoia, leaving you just as uncertain about what’s real and what isn’t. Each chapter builds on that unsettling feeling, layering clues and misdirections until the shocking truth finally comes to light.

Dark, twisted, and relentlessly engaging, Cuckoo in the Nest is a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers. Diane Saxon masterfully keeps the reader off-balance, proving once again that the most terrifying mysteries often hide closest to home.

This is a really good thriller. It is a dual timeline novel, flashing back and forth between Alex’s past and present. I appreciate the way the two timelines grew and twined together to create a gripping plot. The puzzle pieces were dropped like breadcrumbs, some big enough you knew it was important, others flying under the radar until the ah ha! moment. Overall, a good read I recommend checking out if you love thrillers!

Alex knows something is wrong. He came back from assignment to find Nikki, his foster sister, missing. They said she probably just went off for a vacation, but he is the only one that she tells everything to. His gut pointed him in the right direction when he was younger and it had never failed him. He’s not going to ignore it now. So when the police aren’t convinced anything happened to her, he takes matter into his own hands.

Thank you to Love Book Tours for the copy, all thoughts are my own.

I have spent a lovely afternoon in the garden completely engrossed in this fabulous novel by the very talented author Diane Saxon. I ploughed through the chapters and couldn’t wait to see what the cunning plot twists would be. I am definitely not going to spoil these for you but believe me the wait is worth it!

Told in a dual perspective and over a dual timeline we meet Alex and Nikki. They meet as Alex has been left by his abusive father at the park and Nikki and her mother take pity on him. Despite the 5 year age gap the pair become close and when the unthinkable happens and Alex needs to be fostered it is Nikki and her mum that take him in. Present day sees the two correspond by her leaving voice notes, of increasing discontent at the house share she has moved to. Alex returns to find her gone and the past seems to be returning through his dreams and reality.

Great characters and a plot that really keeps the reader interested. The house share residents were so dark that they all seemed like likely suspects for wrong doing. I loved the final reveal and definitely did not guess what it would be. The ending wrapped it up really well.

One I will be recommending and happy to give a solid 5 star review.

Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Ive been a fan of Diane's for a while, but i think this is her darkest and creepiest books yet.
It follows Alex and Nikki, alternating between the current time and 20 years previously.
Alex had a tough childhood, but an unexpected encounter with a little girl changes his life forever.
When she mysteriously goes missing Alex stays in the house she was in, to try and investigate what happened.
Both stories are brilliantly told and the flip between timelines clever and relevant. Alex suffers horribly at the hands of his father as a child. There is no graphic description of what happens. A lot of the abuse is deprivation rather than physical.
Alex was a wonderful character, I dont think he had any grey areas, any faults, except for maybe being a typical man and not showing his true feelings! Nikki was great and her childish sayings and sense of fun were infectious.
Can't not mention Julia, a shining light throughout, and Saul, very much the opposite!
Absolutely raced through this and think my heart raced quickly along with it!

A gripping and twisty thriller, that is absolutely brilliant, and also., it's a really touching family story. I fully accept that that makes no sense at all, but trust me on this! Diane Saxon always delivers, but this one is extra amazing!

Alex is the main narrator of the story, which is told across two timelines, the present and his childhood. In the present day, Nikki, his sister, is missing and Alex has just moved into the house share she was living in when she disappeared, looking for clues. Alex, Nikki and their mum, Julia are the kind of people any of us would love to have as family or friends. Alex's new house mates however? Not quite! They are hostile and strange.

Love them or loathe them, all of the characters were well written and believable, the pace as fast and the plot was fantastic!

5 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Diane Saxon and Boldwood for an ARC of this book.

Cuckoo in the nest was a fast paced psychological thriller that was filled with dark twists and turns that had me biting my nails.

The character development and backstory behind Alex was phenomenal, unexpected and well rounded. I was so hooked on the flashbacks we were getting into his childhood, and the relationship he was building with Nikki.

Highly recommend.

A cracking thriller!

Alex has his own memories of childhood, but what made it all improve was Nikki and her mother; he owes them everything. So when Nikki goes missing, he will do whatever it takes to find out what's going on, so he begins by taking on a room in the flat she was living in when she disappeared . . .

This is a tale of two halves; Alex, in the present day and recounting - via his memories - of how Nikki came to be in his life. It pulls you in from the very beginning and before you know it, you're glued to the pages wanting to read just a bit more ... which turns into the early hours of the morning! As I carried on, my heart rate increased and my stomach somersaulted - a bit like being on a roller coaster. Exciting, and very unpredictable this is a stunning thriller written, it has to be said, by a lovely woman with a spectacular puppy - who would ever suspect what's going on in her head? I've never been disappointed by a Diane Saxon book yet, and this one definitely raises the bar! Highly recommended and oh so easily meriting all five sparkling stars!

Alex has moved into a house sharing with three other people and to say they are distant with him is an understatement, but he's not there to cosy up to them and make friends. Nikki is like a sister to him and he's there to find out what has happened, she hasn't been seen or heard of now for weeks, even her mum hasn't spoken to her and Alex knows she wouldn't do that to Julia or to him. He's certain something untoward is happening in that house and won't leave until he uncovers the truth.

Cuckoo in the Nest is the new thriller by this author, told mainly from the perspective of Alex with some input from Nikki. The story switches between various timelines; twenty years earlier when Alex and Nikki were children, twelve years earlier when Nikki was a teenager and the present day. Alex had a harrowing childhood living with his dad and was befriended by Nikki and they have been close ever since. I loved the bond between these two and the way her mum Julia looked out for him and took him under her wing. This was a tough read, not only because of how Alex and his mum were treated by his dad but also with the strange goings on at the house where Nikki had disappeared from and there were some very tense and creepy moments throughout. This is an intriguing and compelling read by a new to me author, which I devoured in less than 24 hours and I look forward to reading more of her work.

I'd like to thank Boldwood Books and Netgalley for the approval, I will post my review on Goodreads now and Amazon on publication day.

While the premises of the storyline was nice. It took a while for it to get interesting with the longwinded build up. It goes from past to present between the FMC and MMC. I did like that Alex came back to find his best friend and how he grew, the discovery of him mom (that shocked me to my core), his father was pure trash. Nikki, bless her heart, just naive and dunce from childhood to adulthood, smh. I like the book but its nothing I would rave about it or put it at the top of recommend list. While its an enjoyable quick read some parts wer just longwinded for me.

"One house. Four tenants. One deadly secret"

What secrets lie behind these doors and windows?

I've moved into a shared house. My three new housemates aren't just reserved, there's a distinct chill in the air, an unspoken tension that makes me uneasy.

I'm not here to make friends, though. I have my own secrets. Nikki is like a sister to me and I'm here to find out what happened to her. Where is she?

I'm convinced someone knows more than they're letting on. Is she simply missing? Or has something far more sinister occurred within these walls?

I'm not leaving until I find out if Nikki is alive or dead.

...

At the heart of the story is Alex, on leave from a very successful career in the army, a quietly determined and morally upright protagonist, who moves into a shared house under tense, uneasy circumstances. His housemates are withdrawn and unsettling, and the atmosphere crackles with unspoken tension. But Alex is not there to socialize. His true motive is to uncover the truth behind the sudden disappearance of Nikki, his dearest friend and pseudo sister who, having left her family home to make an independent life for herself, had once lived in this very house. Alex is certain that at least one of the housemates knows more than they’re letting on and he is determined to find the answers.

Eventually, events even begin to take their toll on a usually robust and resilient Alex, to the point where he has almost reached the end of his tether, especially when he knows that he is being played and manipulated, yet he can't quite manage to explain, even to himself, how. When he finally realises that he is getting too close to discovering the heinous truth, it becomes obvious to him that someone just isn't going to allow that to happen, even if it means making his stay in the house, his last move!

...

The pace is of the storyline is steady rather than breakneck, just the way I like my thrillers, as this allows for a tense and chilling, slow-burn atmosphere, which deepens the psychological angst, keeping me on my toes and completely invested. It delves deep into the fragile bonds of family, memory, and identity, with a compelling blend of suspense, intensity and depth. There are plenty of well-timed and disturbing plot twists, none of which seem wasted or unnecessary and whilst the often distressing clues are there, tantalisingly scattered throughout the unfolding layers of deceit and depravity, tying the loose ends together and arriving at the correct conclusion, was a challenge which unfortunately I didn't quite live up to, needing the big reveal at the end to set the truth straight.

The story is narrated predominantly from the joint perspectives of Alex and Nikki and in several timelines from the early 2000s, right up to the present day - and there is even a sneak preview ahead by a few weeks, to Autumn 2025. The past and present are seamlessly woven together into well-signposted chapters, which are just the right length, dealing with some unpalatable, but all too realistic issues, relating to our present day lives. Coercion, gas-lighting, familial dysfunction, drugging, abduction, human trafficking and ultimately murder, all rear their ugly heads to one degree or another, leading to a constant sense of unease and claustrophobia which is impossible to shake off.

The house itself becomes a character and indeed, the major reference to any tangible location, cloaked in shadows, secrets, and dread. The tension never feels forced, instead simmering beneath the surface as Alex unravels each layer of deceit. Despite the darkness of the subject matter, Alex stands out as a refreshingly grounded and good-hearted lead, whose quiet resolve and moral compass, despite the chaotic and distressing start to his life, lend the novel a calm and strong emotional anchor. His personal backstory of hardship, resilience, and his enduring connection to Nikki, is portrayed with care and authenticity. Similarly, the bonds, both emotional and practical, which Nikki and her mother Julia forge with the young and terrified Alex, only strengthen over the ensuing years, to the point where it seems that nothing can tear them apart. If the deep character dynamics between Alex, Julia and Nikki, are the mainstay of the story, the way in which the author really made me want to hate the additional small supporting cast of characters, was equally well drawn and defined, to the point where 'taking sides' was an easy and natural progression as the story unfolded.

This is the first book I have read by author Diane Saxon, however, I can confidently say that I am already thoroughly invested in her style of writing and storytelling, so it will not be the last.

One house...four tenants...one deadly secret...

I honestly don't know where to start with this one. I always enjoy Diane Saxon's thrillers but this one just left me feeling like something was constantly crawling on my skin. It was seriously creepy and uncomfortable which I guess was the aim of the story but I was just too creeped out and hated every person in the houseshare. They were all self-obsessed and arrogant prats. One rule for them and another for everyone else. And the end result was survival of the fittest. But then, it was about a cuckoo in the nest which is always an uncomfortable read.

I was more drawn in by the past timeline when Alex and Nikki were young and then teenagers growing up. I felt there was more to the story there and I was more invested in that than the one in the present day timeline.

In the present day, Alex has just moved into a houseshare with two females and one male - none of whom are considerate and all equally selfish. The only reason he is there is to uncover what happened to his friend Nikki who was their housemate previously and had mysteriously disappeared. The police had her down as having left of her own accord; she's old enough and just packed up and moved on. But Alex knows different. Nikki wouldn't leave her mum without a word. Besides, she had planned on moving back home with her. So where has she gone?

The alternating chapters in between begin in 2003 and 2004 with a few from Nikki's narrative in 2013 and 2014. They tell of Alex's harrowing story as a child, neglected and abused by his father before meeting sunny young Nikki at the playground one day and though she was five years his junior, they became firm friends - a friendship that lasted a lifetime. Alex is a genuine likeable character, despite his upbringing. Nikki is a delight also, but she features mainly in the past chapters so we get her either as a giggly little five year old or a giggly fifteen year old.

The story is journey through Alex's harrowing upbringing, finding a family who love and care for him right up to him in adulthood. As the story unravels and things begin to slot into place, we find him navigating a mystery that only he can unravel. And be Nikki's hero once again.

The pacing for this one was somewhat slower than Saxon's more pacier thrillers. And the unlikeable characters made it hard to connect with the story. If it weren't for Alex, Nikki and Julia, I probably would have shelved it without finishing...but for them, they made the journey worthwhile and I'm glad I stuck it out. The ending is rather shocking and unexpected to say the least! But I shouldn't be surprised as it is Saxon.

I would like to thank #DianeSaxon, #Netgalley and #BoldwoodBooks for an ARC of #CuckooInTheNest in exchange for an honest review.

Cuckoo in the Nest by Diane Saxon was another excellent psychological thriller for this author. Every book I have read by her has been a 5 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ and this one was no different, it was Brilliant with lots of twists and turns throughout and I loved the characters. Plus, it will have you guessing till the very end which made this book one of my favourite written by Diane.

Cuckoo in the Nest was told by various POV but the main one is Alex, and told in multiple timelines throughout the book.

Alex moves into a shared house with three others, he doesn't need to be there in the shared house. But, when they all introduce theirselves to each other, Alex feels a lot of tension within the room as well as a big chill around him, this makes him feel so uneasy around them all.

But, he is not here to make friends, with them all he is only there for one reason only, to find out what happened to his good friend Nikki.

Nikki was not only a good friend to Alex, she was like a sister and they were so close. But they don't know I knew Nikki and how close they were. . . .Alex has so many secrets, he has to keep this one about his past locked up, if this secret comes out into the open, everything Alex is trying to find out will be out in th open and he will never find out what happened!!!!

But where is Nikki?

Alex, is so convinced someone within this house knows more than they're letting on.

Is Nikki simply missing?

Or has something far more sinister occurred within these walls?

Why? Alex, is not leaving until he finds out what happened to her! Is she alive or dead?

But, where is she and if she is dead where is her body??

I'm not leaving until I find out if Nikki is alive or dead.

WoW this book was excellent and I highly recommend Cuckoo in the Nest. . . a great holiday read etc. You will be hooked!

Big Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for my ARC.

This is a different kind of thriller, and I really liked it.

Alex has a mission to find his "sister", Nikki, who suddenly disappeared from the house where she was renting a room. Nikki and her mother, Julia, had taken Alex in when he was 11. His father was extremely abusive, yet Alex was a bright and kind boy struggling with his own self-worth. Nikki and Julia became his family. Alex rents the room that had been Nikki's so that he can investigate the renters and what happened.

The other renter's in the house are a very strange bunch. As Alex listens and asks questions, he comes to realize that many renters that were women have suddenly left the house.

The story is told between Alex, in the past and in the present, and through Nikki via telephone messages she left Alex. I found the unfolding of the story using this method was very effective. There is just enough creepy atmosphere to make you feel chilled!

This book is not your normal "thriller". This is also the story of past trauma and found family. By laying out the story of Alex and Nikki/Julia in the past, we understand how strongly Alex feels the need to protect them and discover what happened. There are so many sweet and heartbreaking moments in the telling of Alex's life, and I loved Alex, Julia and Nikki! I think it was fantastic that the author incorporated this into the narrative because I really understood and connected with how Alex was motivated. The pace of the story is not as fast as many thrillers, but the interweaving of the plots, and the insight through the narratives had me racing to find out what happened. And the title, once the book is read, is perfection!

Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC. THis is my honest and voluntary review.

Thriller that was half domestic drama and half creepy mystery. I have read and liked this author's books before and this one had a good plot but was bogged down by too much back story. Alex is a young man who has moved into a shared house with roommates. In reality he is looking for his friend Nikki, who had rented the place before and then disappeared. This had the beginnings of a great story: the roommates are strange, there are odd noises in the house and the roommates are unfriendly to Alex and won't talk about his missing friend. However, instead of keeping up the intensity of the situation, the author then switches to the life story of Alex, which is interesting and sad but takes away from the suspense.

Alex was the son of a violent man who drank heavily an his mother disappeared when he was a young boy. He was often left alone for hours at a park, hungry and with no jacket or way to contact his father. It is there that he helps young Nikki, whose mother takes pity on Alex and buys him lunch. It turns out that Nikki's mother Julia is a teacher at Alex's school and she makes it her mission to help him out with extra food, attention and love until one day his father is arrested and he moves into Julia's home. This story is sad and explains a lot about Alex but it also takes up so much space that the mystery portions aren't given enough time to make an impact.

Towards the end of the book we return to the apartment building where Alex suspects he is being poisoned and he also thinks another girl has gone missing. The ending is pretty creepy but I almost felt like this was two separate books. Thanks to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for a copy of this ARC in exchange for a review.

What a wild ride! When I came across Cuckoo In The Nest, I wasn’t sure what to expect, especially since Diane Saxon is a new author to me. The title and cover caught my attention; it looked exactly like the type of thriller I enjoy reading. Just look at that cover! You can’t help but be intrigued by the story. The story did not disappoint me; it was just the type of thriller I enjoy, the one that keeps you on the edge of your seat and guessing. Almost every page had me wondering what would happen next, if Alex found out what happened to Nikki. From the start, you can’t help but wonder who was responsible for Nikki’s disappearance.

The dual timeline worked well for this story; you see what happens through Nikki and Alex’s eyes. Throughout the story, I had a bad feeling that one of the housemates was responsible for what happened to Nikki. Like Alex, I tried to put all the clues together, based on those messages that Nikki sent to Alex. Part of me was afraid to see what Alex would discover. I liked the way that the author kept you on edge of your seat until almost the end of the book. I did feel that the book's first part was slower than the book's second half. However, once the story picked up, I kept turning the pages because I was having difficulty finding a stopping point.

Suspense was one of the best parts of this story. I enjoyed that not only the main characters stood out, but also the minor characters. I could keep going on what else I liked about this story, but I don’t want to give too much of the story away. I am glad I got the chance to read this book, and I cannot wait to check out the rest of Diane Saxon’s work. Highly recommended for any thriller fans.

This book was so creepy, i honestly didn't know what was happening and if i was in that situation i wouldn't either, it was so good.

Following Alex, he moves into a house share with three other people but there is a reason he has moved in here and it's to find out what happened to his ' sister ' Nikki who lived here and one day just disappeared with no trace of her yet. Alex is determined to find out what happened and to bring her home but first find out what is going on in this house share. The three other tenants all were strange in their own ways like they were keeping secrets.. i honestly didn't trust any of them and i felt the creepiness and tense atmosphere that i definitely couldn't wait to find out what was going on.

Cuckoo in the nest is told in mainly Alex's POV in the present and also in the past as we learn what his childhood was like and how he came to know Nikki and her mum which i really loved the relationship between the three and also we get the POV of Nikki from her time living in the houseshare and it shows how creeped out she was living there and was planning on leaving.

Overall i really enjoyed this book, it was full of suspense, mystery and just overall felt creepy and unsettling especially with the roommates and the house and not knowing. Definitely would recommend and thank you to NetGalley, the publishers Boldwood Books for the copy of this arc in exchange of my full honest review.

Alex has just moved into a flatshare, but he has ulterior motives - he's trying to find out what happened to Nikki, his adoptive sister, who suddenly up and vanished one day with no warning. She had been living in the same shared house with Alex's now-current flatmates and he's convinced that she didn't just leave without telling anyone; he knows deep down that something bad happened. But with the police unwilling to open an investigation, can Alex figure out what's really going on before something terrible happens again?

The book shifts perspectives between Nikki and Alex throughout, bouncing back and forth in time from when they first met as kids to current day where Nikki is missing and Alex is searching for her. I found this a bit of a slow burn to begin, really setting up the family's early days and giving us real insight into both characters. The ramping up of tension as the story progresses is quite satisfying, and I have to admit that while I had partially figured out what had happened to Nikki, I was completely unprepared for the denouement of the final reveals. It is well-written and very easy to follow; I was able to finish it in a couple days because it was so hard to put down.

Thanks to NetGalley, author Diane Saxon, and Boldwood Books for giving me access to a free digital ARC of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own and are provided here voluntarily.

Diane Saxon delivers another dark and twisty psychological thriller with Cuckoo in the Nest. Told across multiple timelines, the story follows Alex—a young man with a painful and abusive past—who moves into a houseshare not to make friends, but to uncover what happened to his best friend Nikki. She vanished without explanation, and while the police believe she left on her own, Alex is certain something far more sinister took place within those walls.

The dual timeline works beautifully here. The past shows Alex and Nikki’s friendship forming in childhood and deepening through adolescence, highlighting her role as his light in a bleak world. The present builds unsettling tension as Alex navigates his new housemates—selfish, secretive, and possibly dangerous—while searching for answers.

Saxon masterfully balances psychological depth with page-turning suspense. Alex is a standout protagonist: scarred but resilient, cautious yet determined. The supporting cast—Nikki, Julia, and even the hostile housemates—are vividly drawn, keeping the reader guessing about motives until the final shocking twist.

Creepy, emotional, and impossible to put down, Cuckoo in the Nest is one of Saxon’s strongest thrillers yet. Highly recommended for fans of gritty psychological suspense with heart.

I've moved into a shared house. My three new housemates aren't just reserved, there's a distinct chill in the air, an unspoken tension that makes me uneasy. I'm not here to make friends though. I have my own secrets. Nikki is like a sister to me and I'm here to find out what happened to her. Where is she? I'm convinced someone knows more than they're letting on. \\is she simply missing? Or has something far more sinister occurred within these walls? I'm not leaving until I find out if Nikki is dead or alive.

Alex has moved into a shared house where there's an unspoken tension in the air. He needs to find out what happened to his friend Nikki. Someone knows more than they're letting on.

This story has a dual timeline - twenty-two years ago when Alex first met Nikki, and the present day.
This is a gripping and twisted read. The characters are well-developed. The story is mostly told from Alex perspective, but we also get some snippets from Nikki. There was a creepy vibe running throughout. I could not put this book down.

Cuckoo in the Nest is such a perfect title for this, wow.

It had me on the edge of my seat with suspense, page after page, not knowing where each piece of the story was going to go. I really liked the little bit of time jump happening, where we get to learn about the childhood and meeting of Alex and Nikki before the present day events. Knowing those things about Alex and what he went through as a child, it really kind of fueled part of what I found thrilling about the present day chapters.

The story held my attention the entire time I was reading, I didn't want to put it down. I kept picking it every time I had a break from work, or while I was waiting for dinner to cook. Since I was reading an ARC on my Kobo thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books, the ebook version made it easy to feed my drive to get this book read as fast as I could.

Highly recommend going into this as blind as you can, TBH I only read the first couple sentences of the synopsis and that was enough for me to be intrigued. That's really the best way to go into a thriller novel, in my opinion, especially a psychologically twisty one.
