A Shattered World: In the Wake of Chaos is an survivalist novel by Ryan Kelly. In this book, we follow Garrett Porter and his family. They have moved to a ranch with the hope to have a new beginning after Garrett loses his father. Instead, they have found a misadventure of a lifetime. 

This book was slow moving at first, and then it picks right up into some action. It is chaotic and scary at times because they are in a survivalist world with so many unknowns. It really shows how quickly society could dive into chaos when communications fail and it is every man for themselves. Honestly, it is a pretty scary but not far from reality reaction. The book took me on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The descriptive details also bring the story to live and put you right into the middle of surviving with the Porters. This book covers themes of family and faith, and I think that this gave hope to a very bleak situation, which I think we can all use some of. I think anyone who likes post-apocalyptic stories, thrillers, or even just plain survival stories of any kind could really enjoy this book.

This book was an exhilarating read, full of action-packed moments, heart-thumping scenes, and well-paced tension from start to finish. I enjoyed watching the mystery unfold and appreciated the unique perspective the author chose. Instead of focusing on high-level figures like generals or presidents, the story follows an ordinary small-town individual. That choice made the experience feel more grounded and personal, giving us glimpses of the larger crisis only through fragments, like reports over the ham radio, while keeping the heart of the story close to home.


As with many dystopian tales, there are plenty of dark moments and loss, but I liked how the author wove in humor and lighter, hopeful scenes to balance out the somberness. The themes of family, community, and people coming together in impossible times felt powerful and relevant, and I think they’ll resonate strongly with readers today.


I did notice a few areas where the writing could have been a little smoother. The use of very advanced or uncommon vocabulary, for instance, occasionally interrupted the flow. While rare words can be a great way to add richness, using too many might leave some readers feeling distanced from the story. I also noticed moments where descriptions felt slightly out of place; for instance, a dog is described only after the scene with it has passed, which might have felt more natural earlier. There were times when information was repeated unnecessarily, such as when the car’s breakdown is explained twice in close succession.


These were relatively small distractions in what was otherwise a gripping and memorable read. If you enjoy origin stories of dystopian worlds, I definitely recommend giving this one a try. At its core, it’s a moving tale of a family finding strength and love to endure hardship and helping their neighbors do the same

A Shattered World: In the Wake of Chaos, by Parker Kelly, is a dystopian novel that calls to mind several other literary works, including Cormac McCarthy’s The Road and Don DeLillo’s White Noise.

For a while, it’s not clear exactly what’s happening, or why, and the sense of confusion and dread Garrett and his family are feeling is pervasive. What the reader gets is essentially a classic horror movie setup: something terrible is happening out in the world, and a small group of frightened but determined characters must try to make sense of it all while in an isolated environment.

The tension Kelly is able to conjure through his prose is impressive. As we begin to get a better sense of the characters and their tendencies, abilities, and beliefs, we’re also able to appreciate their limitations. They’re each flawed, but in a world suddenly plunged into paranoia and uncertainty, they must cling grimly to each other if they have a hope of carrying on.

The pace of the novel is a little slow in the beginning, but that’s all to the good. When the action picks up in the second half, it’s scintillating, all building to a gripping crescendo from which one cannot turn away. Dystopian novels, movies, and other forms of entertainment are certainly de rigueur at the moment, but this one is better than most. It’s able to tap into a primal form of survivalist’s mentality that virtually any reader will be able to understand and applaud.

Much less would have been so much more. Relentless unnecessary description and the relaying of unneeded information of every little action detracted from what story existed. Editing is needful.
