Shevi had been on top back home, or well on her way there, until she found out the truth about that society. She feels even more fortunate now that she’s escaped Induction Town and come to the farmlands. Everything was a lie back there. Here, she’s free. She’s even invited others to join her. That’s how good life is. But Jackson knows better. Favored by the overseer of the farmlands, he’s seen the dark side of the place. It is a place of death and oppression, far worse that the home he left. Everybody knows nobody escapes the great Motherland, with its high, impenetrable perimeter, its guards, and the mania that turns every citizen into a spy against their own friends and family—concepts that are forbidden here. And now Shevi has lured those he loves most here into this terrible place. But he has a plan. Do two impossible escape this place and become a hero. He should know by now that nothing is as it seems. The thing he’s counting on the most is no exception. A distant light promises hope from the despair of the crucible they’ve been ensnared in. Daring even to attempt escape is only the beginning of a treacherous journey.
