Rating this book is difficult for me - I’ll be completely honest about that. I’ve chosen my rating of 2.5 stars, but I’m not sure I’m completely happy with it. For the time being though here’s why I’ve rated it this way.

Original rating was 3.5 stars, but a star was dropped due to the Harry Potter reference which is my standard for any book written in 2020 or later. Trans folks deserve better.

Appreciated the attempts at diversity, but some were definitely more successful than others. The casual queer best friend/side character was done okay, but a lot of the inclusion of characters or color felt really underdeveloped. Sometimes the way the characters is color are described is borderline offensive. I do not think this was done intentionally, but it did sour the reading experience.

I did really enjoy the relationship between the main character and her sister, but a lot of the other relationships were less successful. The romance really suffered from this, which made that whole subplot hard to follow.

The main plot was also a bit confusing - I think there was a desire to show the main character’s desperation by having her use both spiritual/paranormal avenues and mental health/medical ones to approach the demon in her life. A great approach to take, but some of the execution was a bit muddy.
