In book one of the series, Sam Harkins, a young man living in modern-day Seattle, discovers he’s in 1930 —90 years away from home. Wounded, confused and stalked by a serial killer, he’s on the run again. Ruth Riley, a rural farm girl, arrives in town with a sewing machine and the clothes on her back. Determined to make good, but frustrated in her search for work, she soon learns the word “seamstress” is a euphemism for prostitute. Desperate, discouraged and penniless, she meets Sam on her first night working in a bordello. Separated by nine decades, can their budding love survive? Behind the scenes, a pair of time agents frantically try to recapture Sam while repairing the time threads he’s shredded, but will their patches hold? Millions of lives depend on it.
This book will be a super quick read because the story will drag you from page one to the back cover before you even realize that you have neglected your real life. Seriously hard to put this one down once you are in it. The time premise is fun, the historical references lend realism and depth, and the ill-fated love story makes you wish for things that you know can't be. I look forward to more from this series and from this author.
My wife bought the book "The Timkers: A Stitch in Time" in Pioneer Square, Seattle last August (2015). She heard about the inside humor of the "seamstress" joke and the references to the bordello's subterranean floors on the Underground Tour and after the tour while exploring the bookstore and gift shop she pointed out the book for me to buy for her..I had no idea at the time what the book was about? But I started reading it first when we got back to Christchurch in NZ. Once I got into it and started to come alive I knew then I was on to a great read. I couldn't put it down and I was hooked. My wife couldn't wait for me to finish so she could read..she loves it too. Now awaiting the second one in the series "The Timkers: Deja Vu. For those who like Time travel, history, romance, thriller, some erotica and some humor, then like me will love this book.
WR Vaughn’s Timker series is more science fact than science fiction, and sometimes so mind-blowing that I have to put the book down to absorb it. His characters are fully fleshed and nuanced, his settings sharply believable anywhen, his plots unpredictable, and even better, he’s funny as hell! As a person who can fall asleep in the middle of a live conversation, I found myself wide awake into the wee hours with these books. Time travel may not quite be here yet, but you can still experience it by reading the Timkers. Some smart movie producer needs to pick up this series.
A Delightful Surprise! I know I am reading something wonderful when I don't want it to end. Glad to know there is a whole series. The first page, I was engaged. I love the setting...I have only been there once but now I must go walk this city again.
