A teen mystic will do anything to solve a series of love-related magical mishaps plaguing her high school, including fake dating her boss's daughter, in this charming sapphic romance.

Magic lingers in the cozy town of Fair Glen, Illinois, and it’s up to the agents at the Bureau of Mystical Affairs to keep it in check. Monroe Bennett, a junior recruit at the Bureau, is ready to ace her first tracking down the source of a rogue love charm.

Protecting her charmed classmates, including the bureau director’s daughter Iris James, is top priority. But when Iris asks Monroe to fake date her to make her ex jealous, things get complicated.

Monroe believes in duty, not romance. Yet the more time she spends with Iris, the harder it is to ignore the very real sparks flying between them. Can Monroe protect herself from love long enough to solve this case, or will her growing feelings get in the way?

Cute, cozy mystery with a fun magical element!

I found out about this book a few months ago, and was ECSTATIC when I finally able to request it.
I read and adored “Brewed with Love” by this author. So, my expectations for this were basically in the sky.
At the end, It didn’t necessarily reach the last book for me, but that would be a pretty hard one to beat.
Though, I still did really enjoy this!

The premise here is that there are “charms” (like love charms) that are being illegally spread around a highschool.
It is up to Monroe, a junior recruit for what is basically the magic FBI- to find out who is distributing the charms.
In the process, she gets caught in a fake dating situationship with Iris, her directors daughter.

I would call this a cozy mystery.
I am not sure everyone would, because there’s a lot of opinions on what constitutes that. But, it’s magical, fairly low-stakes, and pretty cutesy. So that is what I will go with.

The mystery element is pretty big here, and most of the story focuses on that.
I would say the romance is more of a subplot. Which was fine! Maybe just don’t go into it expecting super serious romantic elements.

I think this story needed just a bit of tension.
For having a fake dating trope- it kind of lacks those tense moments you we see the two getting a little too close to each other, and you can tell things are starting to become real.
They sort of seemed more like friends to me.

The YA vibes in this are so cute.
It is very highschool, where the most important thing in the world is prom, and people love roller skating and drinking blue slushies.
This was pretty much my teenage experience, so I do appreciate getting to reminisce on that.

Bonus points for Monroe calling formal dress shopping a traumatic experience.
It is.

I also have to note that It actually made me sad that the definition Iris has of a “good girlfriend” is just a girl who doesn’t make fun of her interests.
Literally the bare minimum. (Which is pointed out. And I appreciate that!)
This is one of those things that is painfully realistic.
Not even just for teenagers.

Pretty enjoyable story overall! I liked it.

This was one of my most anticipated reads this year and when I got accepted for the arc , I immediately started to read it, slump be damned!!!

The entire book was absolutely adorable. I loved Monroe and Iris, I loved that the small town they were in was populated by black people and other people of colour and that it gave us this sense of freedom in witnessing their relationship and interactions with the people around them.
I also really enjoyed the mystery aspect. Maybe I was just too into the ride but I didn't start putting clues together until about 70% into reading the book.

My only gripe though was the world building. While it was still miles better than brewed with love, which I also enjoyed by the way, it still heavily relied on repetition of basic elements of the magic system and it could come across as hammering the point at certain points.

Overall an incredibly sweet read. Thank you Netgalley and Random House for the arc in exchange for an honest review.

Cute, Magical, and Easy to Enjoy
This was a really fun, quick read that didn’t try to be more than it needed to be. The mystery moves at a nice pace, and the stakes are just high enough to keep things interesting without getting heavy or stressful.
I liked the balance between magic, mystery, and romance. The fake dating setup added a playful layer, and the chemistry between Monroe and Iris felt sweet and natural. It kept things light while still giving the story momentum.
Overall, this was charming, fast-paced, and enjoyable from start to finish. A solid 3.5 stars for me and a great pick if you’re in the mood for something cozy with a little magic and sapphic romance mixed in.

3.5/5, rounding up!

Two things about Monroe knows to be true: One, she’s going to crush her internship at the Bureau of Mystical Affairs so she can continue her father’s legacy. Two, love is a lie.

Unfortunately, the charm wreaking havoc in her high school is annoyingly love-linked; students affected are whenever someone tries to so much as flirt with someone who doesn’t reciprocate their feelings and the disasters it leads to are getting more and more dangerous.

When her boss’s daughter, Iris, is affected by the charm, Monroe rushes to the rescue. Not because Iris is cute or anything- Monroe is just doing her duty, of course- but suddenly half the school is shipping the two girls. Iris wants to take advantage of the moment to make her ex-jealous and Monroe’s boss wants her to keep a close eye on Iris to prevent future mishaps, so there’s only one path forward- fake dating of course! Iris has watched all the rom-coms, so she knows just how to fake the perfect, most cutesy relationship. Monroe may not believe in love, but she’s not about to deliver subpar work. Together, she and Iris are going to track down the source of this dangerous charm all while convincing the school that they are deeply in love.

Best of all, there’s no danger! Iris loves her ex, Monroe is disillusioned with love altogether. There’s no chance they’d actually fall, right?
Right?

This book is so fun! I was worried when I started reading because the first few chapters are clunky. Page is more ambitious with her world building in this book than her first- which is commendable!- but she doesn’t seem confident in setting up the rules of the story. There’s a lot of repetition as Monroe explains the Bureau, how charms function, and the junior recruit program but I still found myself needing to re-read some paragraphs a few times to make sense of the details. I was really concerned that I was going to end up giving this book a negative review during these first few chapters, which made me sad because I’d enjoyed Brewed with Love so much. However, once we got over the hurdle of setting up a world with more complex rules, the story shifts to what Page’s wheelhouse- sweet and charmingly flawed young queer women solving magical mysteries while falling in love.

I’m really glad Page tried something more ambitious, I just wish an editor had pushed for a few more passes over the first maybe five chapters. The book is so fun once it hits its stride, but I worry about readers making it past the repetitive and clunky early world building. Monroe and Iris are adorable, there’s such a sweetness to how Monroe grows in her understanding of her parent’s recently ended marriage, and the rom-com references throughout are cheesy in the best way.

So- I’d recommend pushing through the beginning for an adorable YA rom-com with fun magic shenanigans and a lot of heart. It had me kicking my feet and sending my girlfriend sappy texts.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

This is an excellent mystery with a side of romance, and a really clever curse. Rather than the usual love potion, this one — when cast on a victim — means that whoever tries to flirt with them sets of a collection of magical mishaps. Alas, not on the person trying to woo them, but on the poor innocent victim of a one-sided crush. Then toss in a bunch of high schoolers during prom season and it’s just … a lot. Parties, drive ins, promposals, and magical shenanigans ensue.

Monroe is one of four students trying to find out who’s behind this in order to impress her boss and earn a chance at more training and an adult job in the Bureau of Mystical Affairs, and she’s a good agent. Clever, smart, ruthless, and not interested in warm fuzzy feelings. She’s not nice, but she’s efficient. Honestly, I’d read a series of her adventures solving cases — either as a young adult or an adult; I think she’s well written enough and with a strong enough voice to hold a series.

The plot in the book involves multiple side couples, people trying to use love charms to make someone fall in love with them — and that’s treated as wrong, and punished, not just swept aside as a silly high school prank, which I like — and it’s a tangle. But it’s not a mess. The author manages to put together a very cohesive plot with no lose threads or plotholes, and the mystery is able to be solved with the clues given out.

The magic system is a little vague, with more attention given to the Bureau than how or why magic works, but I didn’t mind it. I did mind, however, Monroe and her mother getting a clumsy bonding moment when I don’t think Monroe needed it. Her whole “I have love because of my evil mom” was silly, but Monroe is a teenager going through a great deal of stress, so I can understand and accept her putting all the blame for unhappiness between her parents, and Monroe’s own stress on love not being strong enough to give her dad the happy ending she feels he deserves. But the scenes were her mother were flat, didn’t advance the plot, and I think could have been replaced with more scenes with Iris (the love interest) to give them more time to fall in love.

Still, it’s a quick, fun read and I think it’s well worth a recommendation.

Monroe works for the magical organization in her town that handles mishaps having to do with unauthorized or malfunctioning charms, and she’s assigned to handle a love charm that is causing accidents when romantic feelings aren’t reciprocated. Her boss’s daughter Iris, who wants to make her ex-girlfriend jealous by having a fake girlfriend, happens to be one of the targets of the charm, and when Monroe’s boss asks her to keep an eye on Iris to ensure her safety Monroe accepts Iris’s offer to fake date her, all the while thinking that she will never fall in love with her.

This book reminded me of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, but if it was a sapphic cozy fantasy / mystery novel instead. It was a delightful blend of cozy mystery and lighthearted sapphic romance. Monroe, the main character, doesn’t believe in love because her parents were married for a long time but recently divorced, and she has to overcome that issue in her relationship with Iris. Meanwhile, Iris struggles to believe that she deserves love because her mother’s job keeps her from paying enough attention to her daughter. The side characters — Liz, Andie and Neo — were also fun to read about, and the cast is full of diverse characters both in terms of sexual orientation and in terms of race.

If you’re looking for a sapphic cozy fantasy that’s easy to read and not too scary, this one is a great pick. The only real danger that ever happens is an injury that doesn’t cause major issues, and it’s overall a low-stakes but still engaging plot. It’s funny to read about the mishaps the side characters get into because of the charm protecting them from flirting with someone who doesn’t have feelings for them, and the small town of Fair Glen is a delightful setting with all sorts of quirky small business names.

Charmed and Dangerous releases March 24 2026 from Joy Revolution. Thank you to Netgalley, Shelly Page and Random House Children’s Books for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

Monroe is a genuine, clever, hardworking, and reserved Black teen that loves her friends and helping people when magical charms and events go awry. Iris, the Director’s daughter (whose parent is Monroe’s boss) is funny, flirty, smart and an absolutely unapologetic romantic (as she should be). It was interesting to see Monroe investigate the source of the contraband love charm that spread across Fair Glen and her high school. Monroe swore off love after her parents divorced and Iris is looking for her own love story. The discussions about grief, acceptance, seeking love (romantic, platonic etc.) and work/life balance were compassionate and earnest, and I loved getting to know the cast (Andie and Liz are very cool beings). There were quite a few plot twists that were well written, and the fake-dating and suspense throughout the book were enjoyable to read. Overall, if you like mystery / suspense, found family, rom-coms, fabulous queer and Black representation, and sweet fake-dating /employee x boss’ daughter / contemporary fantasy young adult romance with no spice, then I would highly recommend this book. I got a Net Galley copy and these opinions are my own.

Thank you NetGalley!!!

Charmed and Dangerous was such a cute, fun twist on the classic love potion trope. This YA sapphic mystery follows Monroe, a high school student who’s also a junior recruit for the Bureau of Mystical Affairs, as she balances school, training, and a magical problem that’s spiraling fast. All she wants is to prove she’s ready to become a junior agent after graduation. But first, she has to figure out who’s selling a love charm that’s seriously backfiring.

A big part of Monroe and Iris’s relationship comes from a fake-dating setup. Iris asks Monroe to pretend to be her girlfriend to make her ex jealous, and what starts as a convenient arrangement slowly becomes more complicated as real sparks begin to fly.

Monroe struggles with the idea of romance due to her parents divorce. Instead she decides to focus on duty and her mystical training. That’s why her growing feelings for Iris are both surprising and meaningful.

The romance subplot is adorable and heartfelt however, the book leans heavier on the mystery and magical adventure. The relationship grows alongside but not always in the spotlight of the main plot.

Overall, this was a new, different, and genuinely fun read

Thank you to Random House Children’s Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book early.

Charmed and Dangerous follows Monroe, a junior recruit at the magical Bureau when a rogue love charm at her school leads to her having to fake date the Director’s daughter.

This book had such an interesting world! I particularly enjoyed Monroe’s dad and his job in cleaning up after effects from different charms. Monroe and Iris also had a fun relationship and it was cool to see it evolve as they got closer to each other. The cover art is also so pretty! I was already invested in the characters and the world just from seeing it.

I would’ve loved a little more tension with Monroe and Iris with the fake dating before the end and maybe more consequences for Iris rather than just Monroe since they were both using each other.

But overall this was a fun book set in a fascinating world that I really enjoyed.

Thank you again to Random House Children’s Books and NetGalley for the chance to read this early.

Thank you Joy Revolution and Netgalley for this eARC, these opinions are my own. Such a cute story! In the small town of Fair Glen magic lingers. To keep all that magic in check the Bureau of Mystical Affairs exists. Monroe Bennett is a junior agent and has just been given her first assignment of tracking down a rogue love charm. Protecting her classmates is a top priority. This includes her bosses daughter Iris James. When Iris asks her to fake date so she can make her ex jealous things become more complicated. The more time Monroe spends with Iris the more sparks seem to be igniting. She’s always believed in duty first but now she might be falling in love. Can she solve her case or will her growing feelings get in the way? A charming story that’s a cozy sapphic romance full of diverse characters and fun adventure! Shelly Page’s characters are developed well and I loved the mystery aspects of the book as well! An absolutely adorable story that’s I highly recommend!

I loved this story. I could have used a story like this when I was younger. It would have helped me try to understand who I was. These stories are comforting and important to our youth. There is something special about the way the Shelly Page crafts a story. The stories have queer joy, diverse characters, and a cozy atmosphere. The characters are well-written and relatable. I also enjoyed the mystery elements in this book. I love a supernatural investigation story. I can’t wait to read whatever Shelly Page writes next. I highly recommend reading this book! I look forward to getting my physical copy!

This was extremely sweet and very very cute!
I found the mystery + fake dating situation to be very fun to read about, and I loved seeing Monroe and Iris develop as friends into eventually girlfriends!! Theyre so so cute and i’m really glad we didn’t see any mean girl bullshit that popular girls give, cause i’m sure not every popular girl is like that
I had a lot of fun trying to solve the mystery and read about Monroe and Iris, they had such wonderful chemistry and the plot was intriguing and I enjoyed seeing how the case developed to eventually being surprised at the end
I loved this! Such a sweet and queer love story ❤️

Thanks to NetGalley and Random House for an advanced copy of Charmed and Dangerous by Shelly Page to review! I enjoyed her YA debut last year, Brewed With Love, so I was excited to jump into another cozy, queer fantasy. And this one definitely didn’t disappoint!

The premise of this one was what originally drew me in. An agency in charge of magic for a town? A little bit of mystery with the fantasy? Through in a cute romance and you have the overall vibes of this book. Page also does a good job of fleshing out the characters, giving you a good sense of the world, the magic, and the town of Fair Glen.

Fake dating is another one of my favorite romance tropes, because you know it’s just going to end with both of them catching feelings. But they’ll also try to downplay it. There’s an added complexity of fake dating here, as Monroe is also trying to investigate this love charm. It makes for some great romance situations, and keeps the overall lighthearted nature of the story.

All in all, if you like cozy fantasy with a central romance, definitely check this one out when it comes out at the end of March!

A cozy small town filled with magic and mystery. Monroe is a junior recruit at the Bureau and Iris is the daughter of The Director of the Bureau. Monroe is one of the recruits tasked with finding out who has unleashed a love charm at their high school. I love YA & the fake dating trope. It was a cute read. It has rom-com elements and also a little mystery as we try to find out who has charmed the teens at the school. My only things is the build up during the fake dating was kind of abrupt. You didn't really get that build up it just kind of stated that feeling were becoming involved. Thank You to Net Galley for this ARC

Cozy mystery with a fun magical twist. This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and I really enjoyed it. The concept of illegal love charms and a magic FBI–style investigation was engaging, and the mystery itself was solid and kept me interested. The fake dating romance felt more like a subplot and leaned very soft and low-tension, more friends than lovers, which may or may not work depending on what you’re looking for.

The YA vibes were adorable, and perfect for a pallete cleanser!

This was a really cute low-stakes mystery with fake dating and charm. I really enjoyed this mystery, barely even registering the culprit throughout so that was a nice twist. Monroe is a fun character to follow as she investigates the charm running rampant throughout her high school. This is a really adorable YA story, and I'm excited to see what Shelly Page writes next!

This was such a cute and cozy YA sapphic fake-dating romantasy with just a dash of who-done-it. The magical mishaps were fun, and Monroe and Iris had an adorable romance skeptic/hopeless romantic opposites attract dynamic. This is perfect who enjoys a little magic in their rom-coms.
