What’s Rogue Got To Do With It

Rate this book
Not all packs are by birth.

After my father is challenged and loses his place as Alpha, leaving my den isn’t a matter of choice, it‘s a matter of life or death. Now I’m marked as “other” and living in the shadows between the human and the shifter world, not belonging in either. It’s a lonely life, but at least I’m still here. At least that’s what I keep telling myself.

I’m fine. Really, I am— in the way “fine” is always a lie.

It’s not until I’m out scrapping metal and I stumble upon a wolf, that I see a future.

Only two problems remain : 1) The gorgeous wolf shifter’s stuck in a bear trap and unconscious. 2) My fox recognizes him as ours and rogues can’t mate, upon penalty of death.

What’s Rogue Got To Do With It is the first book in the popular co-writing duo Colbie Dunbar and Lorelei M. Hart’s new series, Fur-Ever Mountain Pack. What’s Rogue Got To Do With It is a sweet with knotty heat mm mpreg shifter romance featuring an alpha fox who loses his den, an omega wolf who never had a pack, a forbidden mating, the decision that changes everything, true love, fated mates, an adorable baby, and a guaranteed happy ever after. If you love your alphas hawt, your omegas strong, and your mpreg with heart, download your copy today.

What’s Rogue Got To Do With It is the first book in the new 'Fur-Ever Mountain Pack' series. It stars Larkin, an omega wolf shifter, and Creven, an Alpha fox shifter. This is told in first person from Larkin and Creven’s povs.

I want to mention the cover first. At first, I liked it because it was different from the author team’s usual stories. But the closer I looked, I wonder if this was made with AI. The cover model faces are odd looking. The dark-haired model is Larkin, and he looks in his mid-thirties, and from the story, I didn’t get the impression he was that old. Creven’s face, looks like he’s much older and it looks droopy. They just don’t look right. I’d give the cover two stars.

As usual the authors keep the blurb vague on who is speaking and they don’t include both characters. It feels incomplete.

I did like the plot of this story. It was interesting how the characters met, the circumstances of their life at the cabin until they had to flee. How they sought out the help of, I think it was Larkin’s father’s friend who was an Alpha wolf shifter. And how the three men made their own pack even though Creven was marked as rogue. I’ll bring this up again later. I enjoyed the story until the point Larkin got more noticeably pregnant. Then it was the usual, ‘let’s go shop for baby stuff,’ and then giving birth. The last quarter of the book was boring.

I liked that the character names were distinctly different, but for some reason I had a problem keeping the characters straight with who they were, and which shifter type they were. I think it was because the voices were similar, which is a problem the authors haven’t learned to make different. Larkin’s voice was strong in the beginning until he got pregnant, and then his voice was more submissive. Larkin and Creven were the typical nice guys this author team writes. There’s never any conflict between them personality wise, just because they’re mates. If you’re looking for super fluffy, that works, but no one is perfect and it’d be nice to read about some imperfect characters.

The fact that Creven has been marked as a rogue is an important part of the story. A rogue can’t join another pack, and they can’t have a mate. But Larkin and Creven mate, which puts them in danger. Once they reach the pack land of the father’s friend, the Alpha knows ancient knowledge and language, he recites it to nullify the rogue marking and mark Creven as pack, he does it to Larkin too. Soon after the older Alpha passes on the Alpha mantel to Creven. He also tells him that there are other rogues and loners wanting to join the pack. Now here’s the important part that the authors totally skipped over. Creven is now the Alpha, he knows nothing about the old ways or the language or rite to nullify a rogue marking and make the shifter a pack member. The authors spent time on the baby’s birth, but they didn’t write anything about the old Alpha teaching Creven about the old ways and how to initiate new rogue members. The old Alpha can’t do that anymore because he isn’t Alpha. Creven is useless when it comes to adding rogue pack members because he has no knowledge. This is a very important part of the story and the authors totally skipped it. Why didn’t the proofers, betas, or editor point this out since it’s so obvious for the continuity of the story? Just a simple statement by Creven, “If we’re going to have rogues joining us and they want to stay, you’ll have to teach me the ritual, and the knowledge of the old ways.” Simple sentence, then the old Alpha agrees and says they can have lessons every day. Totally left out, and the absence of this crucial information annoyed me the most about this story. The authors have a habit of leaving out crucial parts of a story. Whether because they’re in a hurry to finish writing the book, or they just don’t care much for continuity, I don’t know, but it’s very annoying.

Overall, What’s Rogue Got To Do With It, was entertaining for about seventy-five percent of the book. The characters are the same type of nice guys the authors usually write, while the character voices were too similar. The lack of continuity with no mention of the old Alpha telling Creven he’ll teach him about the old ways, and the ritual necessary to wipe out a rogue status if a rogue wanted to become a pack member, was highly annoying. That had the most bearing on the star rating. I give this story, 3 Stars.

Larkin and Creven . . .

Larkin is an Omega wolf shifter who travels from town to town taking work that pays off-the-books. After a month, he moves on to the next town because a lone shifter was always viewed with suspicion if he didn’t belong to one of the packs. Back when he lived with a pack, the Alpha’s son Ryan was jealous and hated him because Larkin’s grades were better, he was a better debater, and he even beat him in athletics. When Larkin’s parents died in a car accident, the Alpha’s son falsely claimed Larkin stole money from him and he was thrown out of the pack. Today as he washed the restaurant dishes, he scented an Alpha in the dining area who certainly wasn’t here for Chester’s pie! It was time to run! But the Alpha ordered coffee, then asked if he could speak with the dishwasher. Alpha Fenton introduced himself and explained that although Larkin was causing no trouble and staying off their land, he is an unmated omega with no den or pack protection and that makes him a liability. So the next day he was off to another town.

On fox shifter Crevan’s day off from his job, his Alpha called and told him to get the van keys and go the warehouse store and pick up the pack’s monthly food, unload it, and return the flatbed trolleys to the warehouse, normally the job of Alpha’s son. Crevan’s fox was being stubborn and making it difficult among the humans. He drove to the den but saw no one outside which should have been a hint that something had gone wrong. After putting everything away, a bell rang indicating a challenge had been called and his father would have to fight, with death inevitable. Rayne shifted faster and unfairly clamped on the Alpha’s throat before he barely started to shift. He didn’t stand a chance. And Crevan would have to leave the pack, a rogue. All he can do is survive, despite the loneliness. When he comes across an unconscious wolf-shifter caught in a bear trap, scents this is his mate. But rogues are not permitted to mate. Can he save Larkin’s life? Will they defy the rule about mating? Or will they somehow find a way to have happiness together they both certainly deserve?

Not only a brand new shifter book but the first in a brand new series, introducing us to the new members of what could one day become a new pack...

Larkin is an omega wolf shifter, he left his pack after the death of his parents and some cruel manoeuvring from other pack members. He isn't marked as rogue but as far as he is concerned he might as well be. He can never stay in one place too long before the local pack sniff him out and encourage him on. Which is why he finds himself on the move, again, looking for a farm where he hopes to find some work only to get his leg caught in a bear trap.

That is where Cerven finds him. But not only him, Larkin, his mate, his fated. There are so many things he has to wrap his head around about that, the biggest one being that he has been marked as rouge so he is living a quiet life in the abandoned cabin he found in the woods. He's made it home, he has found a way to earn money, he is content. Then he finds his mate, stuck in a bear trap and having lost a lot of blood.

From there on out a series of happy chances, some unfortunate run in's and a memory have them packing up and moving out, in the search for a shifter, one neither of them know, one who may not still be alive for all they know, who was recommended and who, when they find him is his own pack of one...

It seems as though this couple, their story and this series are about to turn everything we, and they, thought was set in stone and official about packs, shifters, fated mates. It turns out there is so much more to learn and I can't wait to continue the series. This one was fantastic.

I was immediately drawn in by the premise: two outcast shifters—one a rogue alpha fox, the other a lone omega wolf—finding each other in a world that has cast them aside. The setup was compelling, offering a solid emotional foundation with characters who’ve been through pain, loss, and isolation. The early chapters do a great job of showing the harsh realities of living on the fringes, and I was really invested in seeing how these two would find a place to belong—both together and in the broader context of pack life.

But unfortunately, after such a promising start, the story lost some of that emotional depth. As the romance picked up, the rest of the narrative shifted into a faster pace that felt more like a summary of events than a continuation of the rich emotional journey we started with. Moments that should have hit hard emotionally—especially around identity, fear, and the challenges of forging something new—felt more like bullet points than fully fleshed-out scenes. The love story remained strong and sweet (and knotty, as promised), but I found myself wanting more from the worldbuilding and emotional stakes outside of the central romance.

There’s definitely heart here, and I think the message of finding chosen family and building something new from nothing is a beautiful one. But the execution felt rushed in the second half, making what could’ve been a really powerful story fall a bit flat.

Still, if you're looking for a quick, low-angst, sweet-with-heat shifter romance with fated mates and a feel-good ending, this might be just the read for you.

After his parents died in an accident Larkin was accused of stealing money form the alpha’s son because he was better then the son so that way Larkin would be made to leave. The last place he worked at the alpha told him to leave that night as he didn’t want trouble since Larkin was an unmated omega. Saw a flyer for orchard help but he stepped in a trap, Creven found and got him out. Creven had been marked as a rogue after his father the alpha was killed during a challenge so he was banished, he found a cabin out in a woods so he decided to live there away from everyone. His fox pulled him to Larkin who was in a trap, he released Larkin but then he got a bad infection. Creven went to a pharmacy to get some supplies and the pharmacist smelled the infection on Creven’s skin and gave him antibiotics to help heal Larkin. Shifter law says that they couldn’t mark each other as mates even though they were then had a little trouble with Daniel which Larkin’s wolf took care of. They went on the run again but then went to see Auden who was friends with Larkin’s father and were invited to stay later Auden did a ceremony so Creven and Larkin became part of his pack. Auden decided that he was too old to be alpha so him and Creven did an odd challenge for Creven to become alpha.

"I'd have preferred a less owie introduction but it was memorable and I bore the scars as a reminder."

Wow, I'm not sure what's going on but recently all the books I've been reading have been fantastic. I'm used to hitting dry spells but I'm not used to having so many five star reads in a row, it's definitely a good problem to have.

This is book 1 in the new series, Fur-ever Mountain Pack, by Colbie Dunbar and the writing duo of Lorelei M Hart. Of course if you follow my reviews you know I snapped this one up on Booksprout the minute it showed up. Anything written by these authors is an instant grab for me.

I definitely have a thing for paranormal romance and this fits the bill. At 159 pages the story was fast paced and exciting. I'm surprised how much they can pack into a book of this size and have it be so enjoyable. I can't wait to see what they have planned for this series.

A rogue alpha fox shifter, a lone omega wolf shifter, destined to be alone by shifter council law, fated mates, mpreg, building a new pack where shifters care about shifters will definitely experience some growing pains.

What's Rogue Got to do With It is the first book in Dunbar/Hart's Fur Ever Mountain Pack series. This is a new direction for my favorite shifter writers. Their earlier series (ie, Dial M for Mates, Wrong Number) were lighter fare. Meet cutes, often times hilarious labor scenes. This book felt grittier, a little angstier. Maybe it's all those shifter mafia stories they've been writing?
This shifter world is a bit dark. Creven and Larkin are mates but rogues (Creven) and loners (Larkin) can't mate by law. Their lack of den/pack bonds make them outcasts and the two are used to having to leave town at a moment's notice. There's a lot of looking over their shoulders, never quite relaxing. Never fitting in. That tension doesn't go right away after they meet. It's too dangerous to exchange mating bites. And they end up on the run after falling afoul a nasty alpha.
The worldbuilding is very good with the authors laying out the groundwork for the rest of the series. It's a quick, nicely paced read. Some serious steam. And a warm found family.
Quick and enjoyable to read. Totally original.

Sometimes fate don’t care about rules she will get the results she wants and that seems to be the case with our two here so get comfortable you won’t put it down until the last page has been turned. Larkin an omega wolf shifter watched his parent die unjustly from other pack member he decides to leave before they attempt to kill him he isn’t a rouge yet but he might as well be, unsure where he is headed always on the run to stay alive, looking for work on a farm but he finds himself caught in a bear trap and unable to free his leg. Cerven an alpha fox shifter finds his fated mate unconscious stuck in a bear trap a council that forbids rouges from mating or evening being together for whatever reason but he has been found a way to live a quiet life in the woods, make money, lonely, and fate allows him to find his fated mate what’s a guy to do leave him out there to die from blood loss…his heart won’t allow it but is time on their side, will they find help, will the truth come out about the death of his parents or will find their own pack, will they face it together, and in doing so find their way to happiness?

I love the new cover style. This is the first book in the Fur-Ever Mountain Pack series. This is the story of Larkin and Creven. Larkin is an omega wolf shifter. He is not branded as rogue but as an omega shifter with no pack, he can only stay in town a few days before the local alpha tells him he has to move on. They don't want any trouble with alpha's fighting over him. It is lonely but he is surviving. Creven is an alpha fox shifter who has been branded as rogue by the alpha who replaced his father in his pack. They meet when Creven finds Larkin trapped by an illegal bear trap. Even worse, they realize that they are fated mates. Usually a happy occasion but rogue shifters are not allowed to mate. This is their story. The book is written well and is easy to read. It lays the groundwork for the establishment of their new pack. I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next book in the series.

Larkin and Creven’s story is a heartwarming tale of resilience, connection, and transformation. With a wolf and fox duo at the center, both down on their luck, their story unfolds in a way that’s both emotionally rich and unexpectedly hopeful. Their initial meeting is striking—distinctive and layered with tension borne from complex circumstances. Despite the challenges, their chemistry ignites something powerful and rare. The way they support one another through hardship feels genuine and deeply earned. As the story progresses, a saving grace enters their lives—not just altering their future, but anchoring their bond. One of the most compelling aspects is the community they build along the way. Each new relationship strengthens their resolve, creating a sense of belonging and unity..
Overall, it’s a beautifully told journey that speaks to the unexpected joys of companionship and the transformative power of hope.

gauze, sooo knotty!, cremains, 70s chic, kit or cub?, YouTube, soap operas, rolling pin, wolf & fox panel carving, only marshmallows? no s'mores?

This is a great interspecies shifter book. You can't help but feel bad for both MCs in the beginning. Both are without packs, running and living by themselves.

Larkin is a lone wolf after his parents die in an accident, and his pack shuns him. Being an unmated omega, he poses a liability to whatever pack he's associated with. Creven is a marked rogue alpha fox shifter by the alpha who challenged his pack alpha father and loses. The new alpha marks Creven as a rogue and ousts him.

Fate brings the fated mates together. But marked rogue shifters are forbidden from mating with death for those that defy that law. Creven agonizes over the cruel twist fate has dealt him.

I really enjoyed this book. It kept me enthralled throughout it. I recommend it.

I always love a good shifter mpreg and this is a wonderful one. The beginning of a new series, this tells the story of Larkin and Creven, a wolf and a fox shifter respectively. Creven, the alpha, was cast out of his pack and marked rogue due to a challenge to his father leading to his father's death. Larkin was a lone wolf due to his family. Due to shifter law, rogues can't mate, but our heroes are fated mates and fate doesn't listen to the law. So they settle down, always looking over their shoulders, until a challenge finds them and then they have to go on the run, again. Only for Larkin to become pregnant. But luckily, Larkin has a possible solution... and then they find that maybe it pays to know some obscure ancient laws. A lovely story, lots of heat and of course a romantic ending. I think the rest of this series will be wonderful to read.

It was a struggle for me to finish this one - like trying to ski uphill all the way. It was possibly great - the writing could have been smooth for all I know! What I do know is the author had two outcasts in the middle of no where in a falling down abandoned cabin with nothing. One character is broke and the other is running out of money and scrapping metal to pay for the groceries and gas for an old truck and a gas powered old generator. Then all of a sudden they had functioning internet! [ come on - if there was wireless internet available in the middle of no where then it follows that there needed to be satellite connection or a tower near by and a hell of a lot more than a gas powered generator - and a laptop - they would need the tools and those are not cheap!] I love me some (a lot!!) fantasy, but do not drop such an obvious block in my path - it threw every thing else for me! Consistency and small details can make -- or break -- a story.

ARC review.
Larkin, wolf shifter, and Creven, fox shifter, is first pair out in the new series Fur-Ever Mountain Pack. A very good read and now I'm eagerly waiting for the next one.
Both have experienced sadness, loss and difficulties in the past. Now they both are living in between the shifter and human society, a lonely place to be.
When Larkin finds himself in a bear trap and Creven rescue and nurses him back to health, they find themselves in a new and dangerous situation. Finding out they are fated mates create both a happy and a difficult situation. Rogues are not allowed to take a mate. Luckily they have some one on their side and the future is looking much better for them.
A very sweet, easy read for us who love to read about shifters, fated mates, mpreg and a happily ever after.

I couldn’t put this down until the very last page. Larkin is a lone wolf after being rejected by his pack after the passing of his parents, and moved from town to town until he could find somewhere he could settle permanently. When he is caught in a bear trap, he spends time recuperating with someone who smells like his mate. Creven is a Fox shifter who was marked rogue when an alpha challenged his father for the leadership of their den. When he discovers, Larkin caught in a trap, he knows that he is his fated mate. This is their journey in being with who they know fate has sent them, and eventually being excepted into a pack of their own. It’s a really sweet story and well worth reading.K

I was given an advanced copy of this book to read and I am reviewing with my honest and fair opinion.

OMG - what a fabulous shifter romance! I was a bit slow getting into the story, but Creven's background was essential so I understand why it was there. Larkin was essentially a drifter, though as a shifter it was even harder. This story really tugged on my heartstrings, from the "fated but can't" rules to the bullying and fear. There were multiple insurmountable issues they were forced to confront and only fate and hope to guide them. This story takes you through their meeting, growing together, abs discovering the world had more to offer them than they ever let themselves truly hope for. A story of perseverance, determination, hope, devotion and love.

4.25 stars!

This is book one in the author’s Fur-Ever Mountain Pack series and it’s the sweetest shifter book I’ve read in a while.

Between an alpha fox shifter marked as rogue following a challenge against his alpha father’s rule and an omega wolf shifter with no pack, the two, Creven and Larkin, respectively, struggled with shifter law prohibiting them from becoming mates. To me, the love they felt for each other, and the fears they faced in order to be together is the stuff romances are made of.

This is an incredibly sweet read that’s more than worth the time it takes to read. Grab it today. 4.25 stars!.

'"You don't have to run anymore."
I glimpsed sincerity that matched what was in his voice. "I don't know how to stop.”
"I’ll teach you.”
Those three words were easy, unlike what we faced. But who knew? Maybe we could change fate.'

I loved this book. It was a sweet, hurt/comfort romance. Good world building and wonderful characters. I loved both wolf Larkin and fox Creven. Crevin's story broke my heart. I liked how the two of them first met- for the pain and seriousness of the situation, there was also a peace to it. Crevin recognized Larkin as his mate immediately, but as a rouge, shifter law forbid him from having a mate. Both were on the run and I liked how their relationship developed.

A great start to a new series. 5 stars

This was good. A good start to a new series. I went into this without reading a blurb...and after a few chapters I felt this was a lil darker than what the writing duo normally write but I still enjoyed it. I wouldn't say this romance was sweet and fluffy. Larkin and Creven situation is far from nice and the world they live in is not as kind. But fate brought the two together and they had a hard fought romance that led to a very satisfying HEA for both. I see more in this series being as tense(due to rogues/loners finding love) but hopefully a little bit more sweeter.

I loved this book! It is typical Lorelei and Colbie magic. Great characters, a good storyline, and of course, HEA. Creven was made rogue, wrongly. He had done nothing wrong. Larkin was a lone wolf, not entirely by choice, making him an unmarked rogue. Rogues aren't allowed to mate. Too bad, fate has other plans. Together they will build a pack. The charm of this story is how well Creven and Larkin fit together. Watching them defy the odds is a joy. I felt their frustration. Their attraction is immediate, intense, and inevitable. Come. Join them on the journey of a lifetime. You will be glad you did.

Larkin and Creven story was interesting with a wolf and fox pairing that were down on his luck and found the happiness they hadn’t expected.
Their first meeting was unique, and their connection seemed complicated by their circumstances.
I liked their chemistry, the support they found in each other, and the saving grace that changed their lives forever.
They made strong connections along the way, a community that helps them thrive, and also a solution for the future.
I enjoyed the story, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next.

This story is a great start to a new and interesting series. The story caught me from the beginning and I couldn’t put it down. It was fast past and engaging. Both Larkin and Cerven have been through a lot and the world hasn’t been kind to them. However, after they meet and go along their journey I really felt there is hope for the future. I really felt that Larkin and Cerven were perfect for each other. They truly support each other and grow together. I’m really excited to see what happens next in this series. I can’t wait for the next story!

What’s Rogue Got To Do With It introduces a captivating new pack dynamic where a wounded omega wolf encounters a fierce alpha fox under extraordinary circumstances. After surviving his pack’s upheaval and living on the run, Larkin’s life takes a dramatic turn when he rescues an unconscious wolf in the wilderness. However, he soon discovers that his fox-shifter’s pack strictly prohibits rogues from mating. From that moment on, instincts clash with rules, and attraction defies ancient laws.

This is the first book in a new series called Fur-Ever Mountain Pack and I really enjoyed it and can't wait to read more from this series, I like that this pack is different and is about giving shifters the chance of a new home and a fresh start. I really liked Creven and Larkin's story and Auden is a great character as well, I liked getting the background story about these characters as I think it helps with what the series and pack goals are about and I'm really looking forward to reading more from this series and seeing how the pack progresses. Good start.

Found solutions! Creven was scarred as rogue after his Father lost his Alpha position to a jerk. Creven lived on the outskirts, alone and relatively content until he finds a wolf stuck in a bear trap. Larkin lives alone and is used to living an isolated life. They are para morally not to mate, but they feel the pull. Great first in series on how these two delightful men work through what is forbiddin. Great story, nice flow good group of new friends, well done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.

An awesome start to what will be an amazing series

When Creven was marked rogue he never thought he would find love or a pack. Lone wolf Larkin had never known pack and was sure he would always be alone.

This is one of those stories that dig into your very soul and makes you feel everything going on. The characters are realistic and entertaining. It proves that no matter what others think, you have the right to find peace and happiness in your own life.

I can’t wait for book 2!!.

Larkin is on the run. He’s always moving from place to place thinking he’s being hunted by his old pack. Creven has been marked Rogue by the new alpha of his pack after the alpha killed his father. Being banished and marked, Creven thinks he’ll always be alone. Finding an injured wolf in a bear trap was the last thing he wanted especially when he realizes that Larkin is his mate.

Sweet story and I really enjoyed reading it. Found pack, beautiful baby, two strong characters.

What’s Rogue Got To Do With It is the first book in the Fur-Ever Mountain Pack series. This is the story of Larkin an omega wolf shifter and Creven an alpha fox shifter. This was a quick read for me. I loved watching these two as they built a life together. Their first meeting was unique but painful for one of them. I loved the characters and watching them build a new pack. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend this book.
