While I really enjoyed the illustrations and the presentation, it is slightly baffling to me that a children's catechism is worded so obtusely. Unfortunately, it's just unusable for my young children. By the time they would be old enough to understand the archaic twists of phrase the catechism presents, the illustrations wouldn't have the effect that would make them actually potent memory tools. I don't understand why the language couldn't have been modernized.

While I can appreciate the historical language used in this book, I found that it did not correspond well to the illustrated depictions for each answer. The pictures certainly do draw children in to listen, which is a great strength. However, the age of child who is interested in such illustrations is far younger than the language used. It generated good questions and challenged my understanding and ability to teach, both of which I would say are positive outcomes. Still, if the language is unintelligible to the audience intended, presumed by the childish illustrations, then I believe such language is a weakness in this case.

This edition of the Baptist Catechism, while still in older English, is a beautifully laid out and illustrated edition for young lives, young minds, and their parents too. Containing the full text of Catechism (which is derived from the articulations of truth from the 1689 2nd London Baptist Confession of Faith) is a wonderful edition published by Founders Press with illustrations by RefToons.

We enjoyed going through this question by question and looking up all the references. The illustrations are fun, too. The language is a bit challenging for younger kids, so takes extra explanation and discussion.
