The Ballad of Baby Blue

Rate this book
Some songs are warnings.
Some girls are remembered in whispers.
And some stories refuse to fade—because they were never truly finished.

In Hemridge, fae and mortals once lived side by side.
Then came the famine. The sickness. The fear.
The fae became strange. Dangerous. Unwelcome.

Seventeen-year-old Blue couldn’t care less.

Raised by Margie, a woman who once loved a faerie and paid the price, Blue has spent her life barefoot and fearless in the Appalachian mountains—and that suits her just fine.
The townsfolk want nothing to do with her? Perfect. The feeling is mutual.

But when Margie is called back to town to care for her aging mother, Blue sets her jaw and insists on going with her.
She’ll have to hide her magic. Cover her pointed ears.
Letting Margie go down the mountain alone would be cowardly—and Blue is no coward.

Most of Hemridge is exactly as awful as she expected.
Especially her next-door neighbor, Evie.

Awkward, observant, soft-spoken Evie—who watches too closely, asks too many questions, and scrunches her nose whenever Blue does something strange…
a maddening habit Blue tries not to find endearing.

What begins as irritation shifts into something softer. Then deeper. Then forbidden.
Because in Hemridge, girls like Blue aren’t allowed to love openly.

As summer deepens and secrets unravel, Blue faces an impossible
Stay and vanish into a life of pretending.
Run, and become a cautionary tale.
Or follow a legend only half-believed—
one that speaks of bridges between worlds, and magic that remembers its own.

Celeste Sutton writes about enchanted realms, dangerous bargains, and the kind of love that makes you ache.

For two decades, she published novels the traditional way—books that found millions of readers and spent months on bestseller lists. But eventually, Celeste did what any fantasy heroine worth her salt would do: she opened the door to something wilder. Indie publishing called, and she stepped through gladly, joining a fierce, brilliant community of storytellers who believe magic is meant to be shared.

Celeste’s love affair with fantasy began early, with the wondrous adventures of Edward Eager and the dragon-filled skies of Pern. Recently, thanks to her children, she rediscovered the genre as an adult—falling headfirst into Brandon Sanderson’s intricate worlds of intrigue and sacrifice, Travis Baldree’s cozy taverns where retired warriors serve cinnamon rolls, and Heather Fawcett’s wild meadows of charming but dangerous fae.

She now writes immersive, addictive fantasy (with just enough romance) for readers who crave wonder, adventure, and high-stakes enchantment.

If you, too, keep searching thrift stores for an old wardrobe—just in case—her books are for you.

The Ballad of Baby Blue is the Prequel to The Queen's Box of the Her Dark Inheritance series and is an engrossing origin tale that sets the stage for Her Dark Inheritance and the bloodline that began it all. It is all about longing, first love, and the courage it takes to step across the threshold no matter what.

Overall, this is a great set up for Book 1 and was a bonus read that came with joining the ARC team for The Queen's Box. It was an easy read about young first love, however, it is a cozy cute read that just isn't usually my kind of read. I love those thought-provoking epic fantasy journeys that you can't help but overthink and try to break down, and this is not one of those books. It is about a young girl and her journey of self-discovery. No overthinking involved (lol), so my rating is based on that, and it is still an enjoyable read.

Celeste does an amazing job with setting up the world building for the series, and you get an idea of what is to come. She also does an amazing job with the emotional depth and implementing real life prejudices and bias making you feel that injustice like it’s happening to you, and you want to lash out. It was very well written and I hope I get to see Evie and Blue reunite at some point. It is a nice set up for the world building of the series and I’m looking forward to see where it goes in The Queen’s Box.

Thank you so much to the author for a gifted eARC.

Whew all the stars Celeste all the stars!!! First off this book was a super fast quick read for me at least because I was thrust in and I couldn’t stop until I finished! If that doesn’t tell you something it should! I loved it! Ugh evie and blue had my heart in their hands I love them so much the way their friendship started out from them making snide comments to each other to them blossoming in their friendship and into love had my heart. The ending for them was sad they should have had more time but things happened the way they were suppose to so that they could live and in a way it changed the towns perspective of the fae which needed to be done because man the amount of people I wanted to slap when I started the book especially the grandmother! I have rage for the grandmother but she did always tell the truth and did one small kindness in the end so she gets points but I still hate her. Margie oh Margie the best mother to Blue! And Abe, more men in the town should be like Abe. This was an amazing book and now I’m going to dive into the queens box! This releases July 11th mark your calendar and go read! 🥰🥰

I had the pleasure of being an arc reader for this book. This was such a fun read. I always enjoy a book with positive LGBTQ representation and I believe this book did just that. It has representation for the queer community in a way that is still suitable for young adult readers. This is so important and I don't feel like it is an area that is readily available to younger readers who may be able to relate to the main characters in this book.

I blew through this book in just a few days and thoroughly enjoyed every moment.

Bonus points to all the shout outs to Western North Carolina. After all our area has been through in the last year, this was a breath of fresh air.

I can't wait to read more from Celeste sutton.

It was a quick and easy read. It was sweet. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It wasn't what I was expecting and that's not a bad thing. I love the way the book does "magic." The book reads young adult, and as a queer person, I would have loved to have a book like this to read when I was much younger bc representation is important. There was definitely times I giggled, and definitely times I cried. This book can hit you right in the feels.

Book about Fairie, which has an emotional touch by the end of the story. I find it magical, emotional, and how people are attached . Yet, on the other side of the world, we see cruelty also lies. I was lost in another world while reading this book.

Well composed and written, very organized.

I binged this book in a day because I couldn't put it down. This story was beautiful and touching. I grew up (and still live) in Western North Carolina, so getting to read about places I've seen in real life was so amazing. But even without that, this was a great story about first love and the differences that keep us apart but also drive us towards each other. This prequel sets things up nicely for the main series.

THE BALLAD OF BABY BLUE ✨ ✨
This was such a refreshing read. I absolutely loved Blue from the moment we met her, she was sassy and wild and I kinda found a little me in her. Nature is my home and I loved getting to see Blue’s connection to it.

I absolutely loved the lgbtq representation and the relationship between Evie and Blue.

Honestly I couldn’t put this book down and enjoyed every word of it.

I did receive an arc copy, but this review is all my own and out of the love for this book and author that I have.

I was really excited to get this as a bonus book when joining Celeste's ARC team. I will preface that I do not normally read this genre, as it is a cozy fantasy novella about self-discovery.

Synopsis: A young fae child is left at the doorstep of a social recluse. When the child is 17, the recluse visits her mother and the child is exposed to self-discovery, first love, and the horrors of human prejudices.

What I liked:
- The journey of discovery is so subtle, it's as though you're re-experiencing it for the first time again. It definitely brought up memories of my first love and the peace before reality of the world hits.
- This is extremely well written, the emotions are raw, the characters are vulnerable, the underlying tones are well-established, and LGBTQ+ representation was fantastically composed.
- I love the composition and care the stories have. Every element is thought through and perfected, like the first blooms of Spring.
- This is based in Western NC and is described exactly as I remember it. The beauty of the scenes are exquisite.

What I didn't like:
- This is a personal thing and shouldn't be considered when reading the book, but it is partially why the rating is the way it is; I don't care for cozy stories. I need more depth in a book. This is an extremely good story and I highly recommend it, if cozy is your thing. It's not mine because of the pacing that comes with cozy.

Note: This book also gives off a subdued allegorical retelling of race prejudices in the Southern US vibes. The main Fae character, for example, was always in threadbare overalls, white shirt, and barefoot. Hatred always bubbled at the surface for those "of that kind" and were never talked about in terms of empathy. It was always as though the Fae are dangerous animals, worthy only of being put out of their misery.

This gives great background into the first book of the main series, The Queen's Box. I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

ARC Review-
“The Ballad of Baby Blue” focuses on orphaned Fae, Blue Freeman, and her life growing up in the Appalachian Mountains just outside a small town named Hemridge with Margie, a mortal who becomes her stand-in mother. When Margie’s ruthless and aging mother falls and needs everyday assistance, it’s up to Margie and Blue to come down from their mountainous safe haven to take care of her. While down the mountain they’ll have to keep Blue’s predisposition a secret to keep her safe, but when Blue befriends the neighbor girl Evie Fairchild, they become closer than either of them ever anticipated. Eventually it comes to light that there are more secrets lurking just beneath the surface, but not just between the two girls. Secrets are also being harbored by people around them, and these secrets are the ones that could make or break everything. This story was tragic but sweet, complex yet endearing, a completely enchanting origin story with unexpected twists and turns that will take readers on a bit of an adventure. I thought Blue and Evie’s relationship was loving and true. As a mother, I felt a connection with Margie, loving your child more than anything in life. Always wanting to protect them from harm, whether physical or emotional, while also letting them be their authentic selves. I started off not liking “the grandmother”, but towards the end of the story she had a teeny redemption; which showcased her care in her own weird way when all was said and done, at least that was my personal interpretation. Throughout the story, I also found so many lines and themes within this book that really resonated with me, and I found to be relevant to the contemporary social climate of present day. I thought this was a wonderful origin story and look forward to reading the next book, would recommend to readers who enjoy contemporary fiction, fantasy, coming-of-age, fae, and magic.

Powerful Quotes:

“By creating division where there was none, they made themselves less.”

“The barrel wavered but his hatred held steady.”

“The world didn’t care about right or wrong. Goodness wasn’t rewarded, and cruelty wasn’t punished. That was the way of things.”

“But wanting a better world wasn’t childish, and putting in the work to make it better wasn’t dumb at all.”

This book gave me all the feelings.

Blue and Evie—two unlikely friends brought together in a time full of hate and resentment. Blue is fae. Evie is human. But this story is about so much more than just a fae and a human learning to get along.

It holds a mirror up to our own world. It challenges you. Forces you to listen. To sit with hard truths—about prejudice, judgment, and the way we treat those we don’t understand. There is so much to learn within these pages.

Blue absolutely stole my heart. The way she carried herself, the way she knew what had to be done—even when it broke her. She was too good for this world, and I adored how fiercely she loved her mother. She walked down that mountain knowing what waited for her… but she never expected Evie.

And I’m so glad she met her. Watching their relationship grow—so tender, so raw—was beautiful.

This story will stay with me for a long time. I’m truly grateful I got to read it.

Engaging and moving coming of age novel. I felt like the setting was a whole character itself, that's how well described it is! Loved the vibe of the mountains and forest. The coming of age story line is done really well--believable, relatable, not overly saccharine. Highly recommend this for especially teens in your life, but also anyone who appreciates a gothic fantasy novel.

Telling the tale of a seventeen year old girl called Blue, The Ballad of Baby Blue is an intriguing glimpse into a world like ours but in which the fae are real, hated, and have been hunted to close to extinction, with those remaining being detained in prison-like facilities. Blue is fae, and lives with her adoptive mother Margie, having been with her since she was four years old . Blue has only sparse scattered memories from her life before being with Margie, and they live quite happily in a cabin up in the mountains, until they have to move into town temporarily to help Margie's mother (who is fully aware of Blue's true nature, and dislikes Blue as much as Blue dislikes her). 'The Grandmother's next door neighbours have a daughter, Evie, the same age as Blue, and the girls soon form a close bond, which turns into love (there is no "adult content" and nothing unsuitable for younger readers). Danger is not far behind, and Blue reawakens her full memory of how she came to Margie's care…

A really different view of the world of the fae than I'd read previously, I enjoyed this very much. The characters were well-drawn and I was eager to find out what Blue's real history was. The ending gives me hope that future volumes in this series will feature some of these characters again, as I would love to spend some more time with them.

A sapphic, fantasy novel that I had the privilege to read early! Just a few things this book discusses and/or has themes:

- Fae vs. Mortal
- Southern Prejudices
- LGBTQ+ rep

I enjoyed reading this book, I basically binged it within a day! (in 5 hours really 🤭). I read The Queen’s Box (TQB) before this, which is the prequel novella, and I can genuinely say that this book felt a lot heavier (in my opinion) than TQB. And not in a bad way! BBB discusses a lot more topics that some us still to this day in our every day lives and I felt that it was a good representation of it. Especially since this book takes place a long time ago.

The Southern vibes were definitely there and I enjoyed this book more because it takes place in the Western Carolinas which I’ve visited from time to time!

Our two main FMCs, Blue and Evie, could be defined as your “enemies-to-lovers” or they give the vibes since Evie grew up not hating fae but to be wary and cautious of them whereas Blue was told to hate all mortals. Blue is a feisty 17-year-old who is just trying to find a place for her to belong. Literally, being the “odd one out” or a fae, she has to hide her true identity. Evie is the nice girl from town but she doesn't quiet fit in with the other girls.

I love how Blue’s and Evie’s friendship blossomed and that they were learning their feelings for each other. It was something new to them and they didn’t rush into it. It was really sweet to read!

The Ballad of Baby Blue is an orgin story for the next two books in the series, The Queens Box and The Hollow ground. I highly suggest starting here as it will give you some background that I feel will give you a better reading experience. A bit of a warning....I was not expecting this book to break my heart the way it did. Blue is a character that wills stick with you long after you close the book.

Here are a few reasons to pick this one up:
-This is a southern gothic fantasy featuring fae and mortals. As this is an organ story, you will have a bit of history for our main character, Blue. I Loved her.
-I am shocked by how much this one hurt my heart. The story will take you on Blue's journey and it is a hard one at that. She finds solace in time wither best friend Evie and their adventures will keep you turning the page.
-Oh man how Struggled with how Blue and the fae are treated. I just wanted to give her a big hug and tell her it was all going to be ok. I am not from the south but I can imagine some of the places that Blue visited and how this story could bring about lore and folktales. The writing is very vivid and descriptive. You can imagine the beautiful countryside as you read.
-If you love a bit of history and how the next two books will tie into this one, I highly recommend this book. The story will grab you from the very beginning and you will fall in love with Blue. It is an easy read and I read it in one sitting.

Enjoy!

Blue, an orphaned fae, along with her adoptive human mother, Margie must travel down their mountainside to the human city to stay with Margie's fae hating, mother. While there blue befriends the shy neighbor girl, Evie who helps to discover the mystery of her past.

Liked -undertones of a romantic interest between Blue and Evie without being over angsty -The hate of human characters towards the fae was not watered down so it was never a question of how much risk Blue took coming to the town

Disliked -I wish they would have confronted or at least question Anton on his change of heart
-I felt like some facts although displayed to the reader, the dots were not connected by the characters.

Final thoughts
I appreciate how the author didn't sugarcoat the prejudice that humans have against the fae and that understanding doesn't just happen overnight. It left for some interesting revelations towards the end of the story. However I disliked how this story ended. The story ended on a positive note but not a guaranteed happy ending for all characters and I wasn't sure if it was implied to be happy or as a cliffhanger. As there appears to be more books in this series, I'm curious to see if it will continue blues journey or as interconnected standalones.

Miss Sutton, you have officially gained a fangirl, I’m here with my bookmarks and the biggest smile on my face.

This book was nothing short of phenomenal. The details practically climb off the page, wrapping around you until you feel like you’re living inside the story itself. I didn’t just read this book, I inhabited it.

Blue is an absolute firecracker of a character, fiery, wild, free-spirited, and instantly loveable. She lights up every page she’s on. And Evie? Sweet, gentle, and full of heart. Experiencing the world of the fae through her perspective felt magical, intimate, and truly breathtaking.

The worldbuilding is both intricate and immersive. The politics woven throughout add depth and weight, making the realm feel lived-in, dangerous, and endlessly fascinating. Once this book pulled me in, it refused to let me go.

It’s important to note that this isn’t your traditional F/M romance, it’s actually a F/F dynamic, and while it leans toward a clean romance, the emotions are every bit as powerful, raw, and addictive as any epic fantasy love story.

A beautiful, atmospheric read that blends magic, politics, and heart, this book isn’t just something you pick up, it’s something that claims you. And I, for one, am happily claimed.

I didn't expect a book about fae and humans... to have so much real world meaning. It's a story that I didn't expect. It was far better than I thought it would be and also entirely different from what I thought. All in a good way.

This story was definitely a tale that was woven with mystical things such as the Fae but also sprinkled through with very relatable things and real-world issues. Throughout the story I found myself being able to understand how Blue feels with being different, wanting to belong, embracing who she is and standing up for what she believes to be right. I love the companionship that grows between Evie and Blue. It's easy to feel what goes on between the two both negatively and positively and it's definitely got moments that pulls at your heart strings. This is definitely a book that I plan to have sitting on my shelf and find myself returning to.

With looking at the cover I expected something that was nothing but cheery, but instead I got a book that's cozy but also makes you cry. A book that makes you think back to how things are in life or how they may have been for you as a child. It's an emotional read that really hits home. This was definitely one where I had to sit for a few days before coming back to write up my review.

This story moved me in ways I didn’t expect. It’s sweet and aching and full of that quiet kind of magic that lingers long after the last page.

Blue is a force — stubborn, untamed, and heartbreakingly brave. Watching her navigate a world that refuses to make room for her tenderness or her truth felt so real, so raw. And Evie? Soft, observant Evie is the perfect counterpoint — the kind of character who sneaks up on you and stays with you.

Their relationship unfolds like a folk song—slow, hesitant, full of longing. It’s a love story, yes, but it’s also a story about identity, history, memory, and choosing not to disappear.

Set in the misty quiet of the Appalachian mountains, with just the right touch of fae mystery and queer folklore, this book feels like something old and whispered—something sacred.

If you’ve ever felt out of place or too much, if you’ve ever wished for a bridge between worlds, read this book. 💫💚

Many of us look to a new book for an escape, for relaxation, for a doorway to a world with an almost guaranteed happy ending. But every now and then a new book settles in your hands and becomes more than a dear friend, it becomes a part of you. When I sat down with Celeste Sutton's Ballad of Baby Blue I was expecting to enjoy it but reality was more than that. I was so caught up, so quickly that I forced myself to stop every few chapters to allow myself to regroup. I've always been a sucker for a fairy tale, but this tale touched me so deeply it brought me to tears, both happy and sad. I cannot put into words how dear this character is to me, and I'm certain she always will be with me. Prepare to be moved and to love every moment of it.

This was a sweet coming of age story with undertones of familial love, social/racial/sexual biases and bigotry. I think that it was written in a way that put you in the mind of a 17 year old experiencing certain feelings for the first time, which is great for an audience looking for a story of that type. I think what kept me from rating higher is that I prefer more fantasy than realism in my books, more soul crushing and less cozy vibes. I think this book will find its perfect readers who prefer lighter themes/more YA.

I found it a bit difficult to get into at first, but then settled into to a sweet YA novel.

However there were a few moments that were so unrealistic that it lowered the star rating. To avoid spoilers I won't go in depth into them; however, the actions of Blue's parents make zero sense which then basically invalidated the whole presence.

I wish that had been more detail in world building and the resolution was lackluster, I know it's a prequel but it didnt end on a cliffhanger nor did it resolve major questions. At the end of it, I felt like "oh, what was the point"

This was a cute story! Yes a bit sad too but still cute! Again a book that is so different from what i usually read and i did like this!
Easy to read and follow, written well, good characters, i read this just in couple hours.
Somehow this was so light read even with the sad stuff, i don’t know how to explain this. Something about this was just so light in a way, i really don’t know to tell what i am feeling. Maybe i should go some feeling school.
Thank you celeste so much for this book! Hope to read a lot more from you!

Celeste, my friend, oh what a beautiful job well done! I love it I love it I love it. Five million white squirrels for you! 🤍🐿️ I think what I love the most is how North Carolinian it is. When you write about home, it really does feel like home. This world you’ve created is a wonderful parallel to our reality and makes me wish I lived across the Fae bridge too. I love Blue and Evie and the way no one (even the grandmother) cared they were two girls but that they were Fae and mortal. I can’t wait for the rest of the series and to continue reading about Hemridge.

This was a sweet and clean forbidden romance/ friendship Novel. Blue a misunderstood girl never to fit in as she’s an outsider (Fae). But then she meets Evie and she finds a friend like no other! I loved their relationship! The bond they formed was beautiful! I was a bit confused in the beginning trying to remember who was who but then it clicked! Nothing on the book I just needed to refresh my memory. Not a fan of the grandmother lol. I was sad at the ending. I wish they’d gotten a bit more closure or a happy ending.

The Ballad of Baby Blue is raw, intimate, and heavy in all the right ways. Celeste Sutton writes like she’s peeling back skin, exposing the pain, the beauty, and everything in between. It’s emotional and haunting, but also grounding. You feel every word.

This isn’t just a story, it’s an experience. One that sits with you. If you’ve ever wrestled with grief, identity, or what it means to hold on and let go at the same time, this book will hit home. Powerful, poetic, and unflinchingly honest.

The ballad of Baby Blue.
This was a fast-paced read, with great LGBTQ+ representation. Baby Blue was likeable. After she is left as a baby at 17, she goes to find her mother, where there is raw emotion and a lot of self-discovery.
The scenes are descriptive, and the book has a cosy vibe, which is executed perfectly. This is a prequel novella to the Queen's Box which I am looking forward to reading next

This is one of the best books I have read! I was totally engrossed! The words flowed across the page which makes it easier to read! This book was such a sweet story full of emotion.
There is also a lesson learned from reading this book, don't judge people so quickly. How cool it would be to be able to talk to animals! And who knew that a grouchy old grandmother could actually have feelings! If you love fantasy , this is a must read!!

ARC Review -
I have never read a fantasy that touched my heart so deeply. Blue having to hide who she truly is because she lives amongst the very people who don’t like her kind. The LGBTQIA+ representation because her and Evie’s love blossoms into something so much more. Truly perfect and Celeste is amazing with the way she writes. I could envision the world of this book unfolding right in front of me. This story tackles so many issues and at the same time tells a beautiful story!
