A man wasn’t supposed to look at a woman and instantly need her. Instantly want her. Instantly imagine her naked and moaning his name.
A man was supposed to be civilized. He was supposed to keep his control.
He wasn’t supposed to salivate.
But when Sophie Sarantos strolled into Lex Jensen’s office, his control started to splinter.
Sophie Sarantos and Lex Jensen met in the previous book, when Sophie came to her friend Ethan’s defence and assistance as his lawyer when Lex’s partner Chance suspected Ethan of stalking his now fiancé Gwen. Ever since Lex saw Sophie for the first time, he was instantly attracted to her, even when he thought she might be a criminal herself. Now Sophie is in danger, and she needs VJC Security’s protection, and Lex will do anything in his power to keep Sophie safe.
“When you come to me again, sweetheart, I’ll take you. You’ll take me. And there will be no going back.”
I really liked Sophie. Most people thought she was just as bad as the criminals she defended, but Sophie knows that sometimes people do bad things because they are pushed too far, so far that they break, and she knows her clients need her to help put them back together. She knows what it’s like to have people look at them like they’re monsters, not knowing what really happened. I really liked that Sophie wasn’t this innocent, frail victim. She is one tough, kick-ass heroine, and she believes in fighting for those that no one believes in.
“You think I’m a gentleman. But, sweetheart, nothing could be further from the truth.” His gaze was on her mouth. “And I sure do excel at dirty.”
I absolutely adored Lex! He is just SO sexy, and so very intense in his feelings and actions towards Sophie.
“I think I need you more than I’ve ever needed anyone, but you need me, too, don’t you?”
No matter how hard Sophie tries to keep her distance from him, he doesn’t relent, and keeps pursuing her, pushing her to her limits, so that he can uncover all her secrets, and know the real Sophie.
“A man could get addicted to a woman like you. Hell, I think I already am. So caught up that I’d be willing to do just about anything to have you again.” Then he shoved away from the desk and from her. “But before I cross that line, you need to be sure. Be sure I’m the man you want, because there will be no going back.”
He wants and needs to Sophie to trust him, to know that he would never hurt her.
“Then let me be very clear. I don’t care what you’ve done, Sophie. I don’t care if you’ve had to attack in order to survive. I will protect you, and no one will ever take you from me.”
Slowly but surely Sophie came to realise that Lex was not so different from her. His past, was just as painful as hers. I just loved how Sophie started to reveal her true self to Lex, started to care for him, and realise what a wonderful man he really was.
She wrapped her arms around him. “I wish I could take away the pain you had.” He was such a good man, at his core. He hadn’t deserved what happened to him.
“Sweetheart, I’d give my soul to take away yours.”
The chemistry between Lex and Sophie was INTENSE and so very sexy.
“I need you to want me so much that the rest of the world can just fuck off because they don’t matter. The lies and the games and the pain…none of it matters because you want me so much.” His hands flew out and slapped down on the desk, caging her. “Because that’s how I want you. I want you so much that I feel like I might just rip apart.”
I loved them as a couple, and how possessive Lex was with Sophie. Not even when his friends, his partners tried to convince him that Sophie was just using him and them, did he distrust Sophie. He believed in her, and no one was going to take her away from him.
“Not just…fucking…” Lex bit out. He kissed her. Deep. Almost angry. “Not with you.”
Her heart seemed to stop. What had he meant by that? “Lex?”
“You are so perfect to me. Perfect for me.”
She was it for him, and he would do anything in his power to keep her safe, and to just keep her.
“I want you forever.” He should be racing out of the house. He wasn’t moving. “I want you at my side for the rest of my life. This isn’t some sudden thing for me. I started falling for you weeks ago. When I first met a tough, smart lawyer in a police station, and, for just a moment, she made me forget my own name.”
This was a fantastic book. The suspense was fast-paced and gripping from the start, and I was even wrong about who I suspected to be the villian.
As always, Cynthia Eden has written another winner. A romantic suspense with just the right amount of thrilling suspense, great supporting characters and a romance that is sexy, intense and wonderful.
