One late-night DM. One verified transfer. Two lives about to change forever.
Wade Andrews had it all—bestselling books, adoring fans, literary acclaim. Until the day his world shrank to the four walls of his large home, courtesy of an anxiety disorder and a viral video that painted him in the wrong light. Now, his only window to the outside world is through a screen, where he finds peace in the form of a med student’s online presence.
Serenity James has seemingly mastered the art of balancing med school with her rising social media fame. What she hasn’t mastered? Dealing with the fact that Wade Andrews—yes, that Wade Andrews—has been quietly following her and liking her content. The same Wade Andrews who hasn’t been seen in public since his viral “incident”. The same Wade Andrews whose books line her shelves. The same Wade Andrews who proves to possibly be the key to Serenity achieving actually been seen for who she is. While she might be exactly what he needs to step outside again. Will their arrangement grow into something deeper than they expected? Or will it flame out before it has time to ignite?
This is a love letter. It was written to me and I receive the love it gives. I bask in the feeling of being seen and accepted and valued. And I highly recommend that you read it because it’s written to you to. It was romance, it was poetry, it was a story written in verse. It was getting to the HEA without a fight and then getting to luxuriate in that love in every page that followed. It was tender and raw. I feel in love with myself, the author, the characters, the words, the feeling. This is the gift you get when Black women write stories of love for and to Black women. I will hold this book in my heart for a very long time.
DNF at 24% I tried to finish this because I love the premise but the dialogue is just…..it’s more focused on flowery language than actually inviting us into who these characters are and the world they live in. They are just talking at each other in metaphors and phrases, meanwhile I’m waiting for them to have a real conversation where we actually learn the raw details of their lives and personhood….we don’t even really know where these characters live or what they look like cause every line of the book is “you look like a poem” “that sounds like an invitation” “to what?” “A haiku” WHAT??? Bro, your agoraphobic ass just left your house for the first time in 5 years, can we hear about what that feels like rather than have two pages of catch phrases and a brooding staring contest???? Lush and poetic language has to be accompanied by realistic thoughtful dialogue, or it just feels like I’m reading the script for a perfume commercial. A shame because the subject matter is interesting and important.
Sweet Serenity is well written and it's interesting. You can tell the author cares a lot for her characters and the story that's unfolding. My problem is that I don't like these people. Or their story. And I don't care if they get together or not. They're too...awkward for me. Plus the story has way too much internal dialogue. Seems like the author should've gone for a stage play instead of a novel?

⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was such a sweet, feel-good story with a unique twist. I really enjoyed watching the characters grow together and support each other through their healing—it gave the book so much heart. 💕 The story leans pretty heavily on healing and mental health themes, which is powerful and important, though it did make the pacing feel a little long at times. One thing I really appreciated was the way the author introduced BDSM as a form of therapy. It was unexpected, but it felt thoughtful and worked beautifully for this couple’s journey. This was my first book by this author, and I’m excited to see what else she has in store.
At the heart of this book is a love story between two people broken in different ways, who ultimately find solace in each other. But it’s also an introduction to and an exploration of kink, done in such an accessible way that someone like myself who knows nothing about it, can understand that it’s about way more than sex. Sweet Serenity shows exactly how freeing and healing it can be when have someone you trust enough to submit. That level of trust is rare, but between the FMC and MMC it’s beautiful. This was a wonderfully written story. My only minor complaint is that there was no way to understand how much time was passing.
What a sweet story. This book reminds us that love can be quiet and powerful. Tender and passionate. The fact that Wade and Serenity met each other where they were. Not asking too much. Respectful and consensual simultaneously. The names give us a hint to these beautiful characters…both searching for peace and finding it through each other, trusting each other with words, their heart, and a little light bondage.
From the beginning to the end, this story wrapped around me like a warm blanket. I loved how Wade and Serenity showed up for and supported each other. The way they managed boundaries and communication was refreshing. They way they were a safe space for each other was beautiful.
✅ Soft but emotionally powerful ✅ Mental health rep that feels thoughtful, gentle, and real ✅ Characters actually doing the work to heal and grow ✅ That slow, steady yearning that sneaks up on you ✅ Comforting, peaceful, and full of heart ✅ Intimacy with a subtle little splash of kink 😜
This was such a beautiful work of art. These two were a match made in heaven. This touched deep down and made your heart feel love again. So beautiful.
