Little Girls and Their Ponies

Rate this book
That day on the road took everything from Alice Montgomery. Her beautiful face, her father’s keen mind, and her precious horse. One horrible accident left her trapped in a burning truck. They say she was lucky to survive, but they lied.

Nearly a year later, Alice feels the pain and sadness from that day just as fresh as when it happened. Her surviving is barely hanging on. How do you live when all you once lived for is dead and gone?

Then one day opportunity knocks on the door. It’s the chance to heal, to move on. Finally, Alice feels something besides the familiar, aching pain.

It’s time to leave the fire behind and truly live again, but Alice holds tight to the pain of that day, possibly too tight to ever let go.

Meg Collett did a wonderful job at showing the deep love a girl has for a horse/pony when they grow up with one. But this story is much more then that. Alice is a champion barrel racer. On the way back from a event, the truck shes riding in with her father, is hit by a semi. The truck and horse trailer are thrown and roll down a embankment and catches on fire. Alice is pinned, she sees her fathers unmoving hand, but hears the screams from her horse.

Home recovering with massive burns, she becomes a recluse. Hiding in her room, while her mother tries to act like things will be fine. But when the local vet, a guy she went to school with, shows up because he has a problem, he has a bunch of rescue horses that need a place to stay until they are healthy enough to be adopted. At first, Alice doesn't want them around, but then changes her mind. Slowly between Matthew and the horses draw her back into the world of the living. But can they keep her there??

The novella was another great story by Meg Collett. She does such a wonderful job of pulling you in and feeling for the characters.

Alice was a wonderful character to read about. After a horrible accident that took the life of her horse that she loved, leaving her with scars all over her body and other disfigurements along with a broken heart and ego and cause her father tons of damage to his brain Alice has taken to living a hermit life style inside her makeshift room. She's really depressing to read about and my heart broke for her. She hated her scars, was in pain and couldn't even look at her self in the mirror or the scars on her body. Her heart was aching for the horse she grew up with and she lost touch with everyone but what seems like her mom who was always trying to pull Alice into some kind of normal behavior. Along come Matthew a high school acquaintance who has taken over the family Vet office. He needs her help in housing some horses and she says yes even though its hard for her. Slowly Matt and the horses bring Alice out. Alice became such a strong brave character throughout this story and it was uplifting to read about her trying to recover and the role Matt played in it. A very bittersweet ending that I didn't expect.

A beautiful heartbreaking story that follows a young woman in the wake of tragedy. It spoke of pain, depression, acceptance, forgiveness and love.
I really enjoyed the story but be prepared to have your emotions played with and a box of tissues close by.

Little girls and their ponies is a very short novella that gives you a lot with very few words needed.
This novella completly took me by suprise. The story was very emotional and the author did a wonderful job at pulling you in to the story and the emotion of the book right from the start. The author had such a magic way with words that she didn't need 300 pages to tell you a beautiful, heart warming story, she managed to do it less than 100 pages. There isn't many authors or stories that I have read that could tell a story in so little words perfectly and make you feel you have read a whole novel.
Alice has had a tragic accident and in the accident her beloved horse Rosie is killed. Alice is really struggling to move on from it physically and emotionally. She is trying her best by putting on a act, but she isn't falling anybody how deeply scared she is. You can feel Alice's pain and upset through the pages until the towns vet, Matthew needs help with some rescue horses that he needs to get health. Understandable at first Alice just can't do it, she is still so hurt, but gradually she changes her mind. Being around Matthew and the horses, Alice really starts to live again, but if tragedy strikes again could Matthew help Alice stay strong?
Alice is clearly deverstated and living like a hermit at the start of the book, watching her grow stronger and start healing again because if Matthew and the horses they are caring for was beautiful to see. Alice really starts to come out of herself because of both things and becomes a strong women again. Watching the process of Alice's healing was beautiful to see.
I liked that both charactors were down to earth and so easy going and there was no angst anywhere. It was very refreshing for me to read a book out of my usual genre and enjoy it like I have done. I'm really glad that I gave this book a chance as it was wrote by a extremly talented author and the story was heartbreakingly sweet.

Given To Me For An Honest Review

Little Girls and Their Ponies by Meg Collett is a different book than she has written in the past. But, it is a must read. This book will grab you from start to finish. You will find yourself turning page after page after page and keep turning them until the end. It is about Alice. She rides Rosie (her horse) at different riding events. One day tragedy strikes and both Alice and her father are injured but Rosie is killed. Alice can't accept herself the way she is or what happened. She refuses to do anything anymore. Then one day Matthew (the town's vet) appears and asks if the fields and barns could be used as a place to hold some horses that were removed from an abusive situation. Alice says go ahead. Before you know it Alice is out and about helping with the horses. She is also helping children learn how to ride. Then tragedy happens again. Can history really repeat itself? Will Alice's life ever be the same? What about Matthew? Can he get through it all? This book is such a beautiful romantic book. It is one that you will re-read again and again, it is that good. I loved it. I gave this book 5 stars but it deserves more than 10+. You too will agree once you read this fantastic book. I highly recommend this book to everyone. One little note, you might need a bit of tissue around. I enjoy Meg Collett's books and this one is added to the rest. I look forward to the next one.

OMW! What a traumatic, dramatic and emotional start to a book ! By the time I'd finished treading d actually messaged Meg Collett and told her what an emotional wreck I was ! I was rendered useless for the day and assumed the foetal position and sobbed for what felt like the whole day !

Alice, a barrel racer , and her horse Rosie are involved in horrible and tragic accident . Sadly Rosie dies. Hannah is left scarred , both physically and emotionally and ashes haunted by Rosie's last moments.

The local vet , Matthew , approaches her regarding a few rescue horses and my heart skips beats because now her healing can begin despite the fact that she's fighting it.
Matthew is so patient and gentle with her. He sees past her scars , past her anger and resentment , he sees her heart !

My heart simply shattered for her mom. Not only does she bear the brunt of Hannah's anger but she has to come to terms with then loss and devastation caused by the accident. Her daughter is scarred and hurting , her husband suffered severe injuries with lasting effects , her life as she knew it changed in a blink of an eye !
It just reminded me again of how strong a mother can be !

In the end Hannah is faced with a challenge/situation which she takes on fearlessly and selflessly. The outcome brought me to my knees!

This is a story about loss, anger, pain, healing , forgiveness , finding live and peace.

An emotional 5 star read !

I don't know why my whole body's shaking up while writing this review. I honestly just cried silently after reading this book, about Matthew and Alice and her pony Rosie and dog Tucker. I felt all their pains and sufferings. I didn't like it when some of them died. I didn't like it when one of them was left broken.

This is one of Meg Collett's novellas, totally different from the paranormal books she had previously written. Meg is a brilliant writer and that talent of hers is reflected in this book.

Alice, the not-so-little girl in the story, was in an accident with her father and horse, Rosie. An accident that left her disfigured, her horse dead, her father committed to a care facility, and her mother kind of afraid of her. Hope sprang when Matthew saved a number of horses and brought then to Alice's stable for rehab. Things were looking up in the next couple of weeks and months, until one fateful day where Alice had to relive the tragedy and get endangered again.

This story is really beautiful, but at the same time, heartbreaking. As I've said, I cried after reading this, the kind of cry that everyone in my household would notice. I ended up re-reading the story to my kids and in the end, they understood why I teared up. My middle boy could totally relate because he has this pet dog named Margaux whom he loves so much. He refuse to think of anything that might happen to her. So you see, this book is quite special to us.

When reading, I look to be moved in some way emotionally. Little Girls and their Ponies not only moved me, but had me tearing up on more than one occasion.

Meg Collett had written the heart wrenching story of Alice who is recovering from a horrific accident that has left her both physically and emotionally scarred.

While Alice retracts from her former life and the world around her, she finds herself drawn back into it by someone she'd never imagined would become a part of her life.

The inner pain and torment that Alice experiences as a result of the accident and subsequent losses that came with it broke my heart. Watching her slowly shrug off some of her demons as she begins to take up her past passions had me cheering her on wanting her to find happiness and perhaps love.

Meg's ability to convey the pain and suffering of Alice and her family squeezed my heart on more than one occasion. The final pages of the story had me full on crying as if she reached into my chest grabbing hold of the organ one last time to apply as much pressure as she could muster. My heart still aches a week later.

Meg's writing is lovely and I look forward to reading more of her work. She has a new fan in me.

Very "true story" book.

The main thing I want to say about this book if you only read the first couple of sentences of my review is, this book is very true to life. There are no perfect characters in this short story.
'A whole life transformed in a tiny moment.'
One tragic day in the perfect life of Alice Montgomery. An accident on the road with her father and the most precious thing in her life. Her companion, her best friend, her love, her horse.
'Inside that metal box, the most precious thing in Alice's life was screaming her pain, her death, her end. And there was nothing she could do to save her horse, because Alice could only burn. And burn she did.'

Alice is left scared and bitter and it takes an unlikely old school mate in need of a favor to give her a push in the direction to her healing.
This is a short book but I loved the plot it's different and Meg Collett made me keep reading and needing the whole story. There was no slow down or dragging out. I connected with the characters, felt them, and cared for them as if I were reading about real people.
This book is worth the read. It's a love story of many angles, unconventional love.

The flawless details of the the descriptive atmosphere Meg Collett created in Little Girls and Their Ponies is awe-inspiring.  The execution of the prose is handled with a well-structured momentum that held me captive from start to finish. I felt the wind as it was written, I related to the protagonist on a treacherously personal level, and I lost myself in another person's journey. Perhaps part of the intrigue I found in this story is I felt it was my own, and that harbored questions of just how many people have endured similar tragedies and lifestyle changes. And is there hope?
With a beautiful soul such as Matthew's, there is hope and beautiful justice for broken spirit's. I fell in love with him immediately.
I can go on forever about how deeply impacted I am by this story. I can write about the eerily similar circumstances that became the product of my insomnia. All that is relevant is Little Girl's and Their Ponies is a story with the ability to capture the heart of anyone humane. Five stars isn't enough. And I'm not even sure why I appreciate this story on a soul - deep level, but I love Meg Collett for writing it. I'm grateful. Thank you.

ARC for Review

One day on the road turned Alice Montgomery’s life upside down. A terrible accident left her in a burning truck which disfigured her once beautiful face, her father’s keen mind and the death of her beloved horse. They told how lucky she was to be alive but she thinks otherwise.

A year later and still she feels the pain and sadness of the day. Alice is barely surviving as the things she once loved are no longer around but dead.
One day, she finds a way to move forward slowly with the aid of Matthew a longtime friend and local veterinary. Using the once empty barn for rescue horses, she finds herself moving forward. Slowly she begins to feel again beyond the pain.

Will Matthew make her feel whole again as they spend more time together. Can she allow herself to be happy once again and dream like that of a little girl she once was? A story of moving forward and learning to dream again.

**5+++ stars**

Little Girls and Their Ponies is much more than a story about a girl & her horse. It is a story of tragedy, healing and hope. It shows the true power of animals in therapy and healing. It shows the courage one must have to learn to overcome a devastating tragedy and begin to heal.

Never before have I read a story that had me in tears with merely one chapter. Not since reading A Dog's Purpose and A Dog's Journey have I felt such emotions or found an author that can relay these emotions in words on a page.

As another reviewer said, don't be fooled into thinking only those that like horses will enjoy this novella - anyone with a heart will fall instantly in love with this book.

While this doesn't have your typical HEA, I don't believe this story could have ended any other way than it did.

A thousand kudos to Meg Collett for writing a story so profound and emotionally heart-wrenching that I know it will be staying with me for many, many years.

After a tragic accident Alice must learn to pick up the pieces and heal not only physically, but mentally too. However, she is just going through the motions daily and doing it halfheartedly at best. When Matthew presents her with a group of neglected horses that are in need of a temporary home and care, will she rise to the occasion and take a chance?

This read was sweet and pulls you in. The characters were down to earth and you can relate to their story that keeps you reading straight through to the end. Speaking of the end, which is where I felt most vested in Alice’s character, you find yourself getting thrown for a loop.

This heartfelt story by Meg Collect was provided to me for an honest review. Believe me when I say that I’m happily finding my way through her books and this read you will enjoy.

If you aren't into horses or know much about them, don't let that fool you into thinking that this story will not be for you. I was swept away by the detail and emotion that Meg provided from the first page. Alice is a prickly character, but it's understandable. I felt so bad for her mother, always trying to be bright and bubbly even though none of it penetrated through Alice's dark world. She refuses to be a part of the world after her accident, thinking that her outward appearance being ruined that she had no place in the world. Her friend Matthew tries to pull her out of her shell and show her she still has more life to live, regardless of her physical limitations.
This was a really good book. I wasn't expecting the emotion from a novella that I got. This story stuck with me for quite a few days afterwards, which I wasn't expecting. Good job Meg! Keep them coming please!!

So heartbreakingly beautiful! Be prepared to ugly cry. I don't mean just a little. I mean a hardcore ugly cry, that lasts well after the book is over. I beta read this book and I will tell you in this review, I not only praised the authors phenomenal work, but I also yelled at her for breaking my heart into a million tiny little pieces. Just when I thought everything was going to work out in the end, Meg screams PLOT TWIST and digs in between the ribs to pull my heart out, slowly and painfully.

This book is just absolutely beautiful. I cannot begin to tell you how touching this story is. I fell in love with Matthew. And I have a favorite line!!!

“They’re just scars, Alice. They don’t ruin you.”

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Little Girls and Their Ponies! Literary Fiction is a new genre for me. Thank you for another amazing story Meg!!!!

You don't know beautiful writing until you read a Meg Collett book. LGP is just another example of how Collett is a master of words. I'm not a horse person, but I could feel her love for these animals as if it were my own.
This is a novella, short and sweet, but filled with so much love and courage. Our heroine is recovering from a pretty devastating accident, one that took her beauty and her most loved and prized possession; her horse.
When a boy she knew in high school shows up and asks for a favor, it is only then she decides to step out of the darkness she's been hiding in and lets him help her return to what she loves again.

This is the first book of Meg Collett's that I have read and what a book to introduce me to her.
This book is mainly about a young woman, Alice, who survived a horrific car accident where she suffered extensive third degree burns to her body.
Before the accident Alice had a horse named Rosie and after the accident Alice wanted nothing to do with horses ever again, this is until Matt the local vet came by to ask if he could put some rescued horses on their unused land and Alice said yes.
As the horses healed, so did Alice and a relationship started to develop between Matt and Alice.
Great read but make sure you have some tissues because it has some sad spots.

Overall rating ***** Emotional Stars.
This book ripped my heart out of my chest. WOW. I absolutely loved this amazing book. Meg does a wonderful job, it will grab your attention and hold onto it until the last word. I really wished it was longer. Alice is a beautiful character, her life takes a dramatic turn and she is left hurt. A really bad accident took away everything from her. Matthew is a lovely character that sticks by Alice side. I love them together. This book is a must read. I will definitely read more books by Meg. Thank you so much for a wonderful book. Have your tissues ready for this novella!

Omg major ugly cry & let me tell you crying when you have a massive cold & pink eye is no Bueno. I honestly don't even know where to start in this review. Little Girls and Their Ponies is a short novella that is packed with emotion. It showcases the many stages of grief & one woman's path to healing. I really loved the animal aspect of it & how it showed the love we feel towards our pets but also how healing they can be to us. I don't want to give anything away but this book is definitely an emotional read that comes full circle at the end. Another well written book by Meg Collett, definitely an author that will be in my top faves

Meg Collette has given us a story filled with too many emotions to count!!! This is the first book by this author that I have read, but it certainly will not be the last.

This is not just a story about the love between a girl and her pony. There is so much more packed into the pages. This book made me laugh, cry, fall in love, hope, mourn, and so much more.

I highly recommend this book to any and everyone who knows how to read. Please make sure that you have a box of tissues handy :)

This book was by far one of the more touching and sweet books I've read. Alice is a girl who loves to ride horses and does barrel racing with her house Rosie. After something unexpected happens Alice looses a piece of herself. When Matthew comes intuitive the picture Alice wants nothing to do with him. This book is one of heartache and pain with a twist. Meg Collett is just awesome at bringing you into the story and making you feel the emotions. Definitely a must read.

Collett's writing was smooth and easy to read. The only problem I had was I never found myself caring about the main character. It's easy to see why readers would love this story of struggle. I just didn't connect with the main character.

this book made me cry, but in a very good way. Perfect ending to such a great story. It is about a girl who gets in to an accident and loses her horse. Well her horse was her best friend and she has nightmares every night. Her dad was really hurt in the accident as well. She takes all her anger out on her mom. I won't say anymore because no one likes spoilers. lol. Really good story and I promise you will be crying at the end. Really really good read!!

When I started reading Little Girls and Their Ponies I didn't know what I was in for. Such an emotional read it was. I cried, I smile, I felt upset and uplifted. Alice is such a strong character hidden behind tragedy. And Matthew is the healing balm she needed. As is the Palamino mare. Seriously Meg Collett has captured all emotions in this book. The uplifting message to this book is everything can get better, there's always sunshine to be found.

Reading this novella left me crying! I lost my brother in 2012 and it is something i have had a lot of trouble with. I could feel everything this girl felt. The heartache of pain. The heartache of not wanting to let go or heal for that matter. I can see this book helping a lot of people with their own grief. I have this in the hands of my brothers children. Maybe just maybe they will be able to move on also.
Thank you Meg for this heart warming book.
