Beth Ryder’s dangerously sexy and seemingly all-powerful boss has disappeared, leaving an increasingly desperate group of Nolanders — and one inept Second — in charge of policing other-worldly activity across much of North America. What better time for a legendary monster to emerge from the Second Emanation and make New York City its hunting ground? But little does Beth know that dealing with the voracious Thirsting Ground will pale in comparison to a shocking betrayal that threatens to destroy her new life among the Nolanders.
Becca Mills is an over-educated, under-exercised lover of good coffee, science, and fast cars. And books. Oh yes. She believes the world can be a rough place and that everyone deserves to leave it behind now and then. That pretty much makes books a human right, no?
Becca is currently completing Book 3 of the Emanations series: Isolate. When not novelizing, she spends quite a bit of time on her "day job" as a college writing teacher.
First of all, I beta'd for this story (i.e., I read the non-edited rough draft). It was about 600 pages, and I couldn't read it on my Kindle because it's old and apparently doesn't like DOCX files. This means I had to read it on my computer.
I promised I'd get back to the author in a week.
It took me two days to read the story because I couldn't tear myself away from my computer. My children were neglected, my husband was irritated.
I love this series. I look forward to the last book so much. The Emmanations series is everything RIGHT about self-publishing: complex characters, fantastic plot with intrigue, magic, science, one of the best "sciencey" explanations of multiple realms I've ever seen, and larger themes running right below the surface. I doubt a publisher would pick it up ... it's too rich, and too deep, but IT ISN'T BORING. And that's what makes it everything right about Sci-Fi and Fantasy--those "not boring" deep themes. That is what both genres are at their heart. I would classify this as "sci-fantasy", its a cross-genre trend that is occurring in the self-publishing world and the major publishers seem to be missing.
To highlight the not-boring elements: Humans aren't helpless or ignored. The "non-magical" take an active role in this story, and human weapons aren't completely useless (a trend I hate).
There are dragons.
Elf like creatures.
Immortals who don't act "mortal".
THERE ARE DINOSAURS. YAY!
The first book in this series, Nolander, is FREE, and this one ends at a satisfying spot, so you don't have to wait until the series is finished to pick them up. They're worth the read as they are.
Solatium and book 1 Nolander were very interesting reads. I stumbled onto Nolander in an anthology and thought it was a refreshing take on powers and ‘God like’ beings. Mills has created a rich pseudo sci-fi explanation for an old trope (young heroine realises she is a new untapped power), and she has fleshed out her universe with well thought out lore, rules and robust characters. The plot seems fairly rote at first but Mills throws in turns and twists along the way, and although some are predictable, she leaves other mysteries tantalisingly unanswered, and hits the reader with some truly unexpected surprises.
I have an issue with the tense at times; sometimes protagonist Beth seems to be musing on past events and sometimes she speaks as though everything is happening now. That aside, it’s a gripping series and Mills is an accomplished writer and world builder. The characters are interesting and all have some decent substance (aside from one token villain who seemed planted just to draw Beth and Williams closer together... *cough* attempted rape on boat *cough*). I’m also very pleased that Mills hasn’t rushed Beth into a romance because it’s ‘expected’ in literature these days. I sense a romance might come in Book 3 but if so, Beth’s well earned it and her character has been built up enough to be entitled to some love!
All in all, I had trouble putting down Solatium and am looking forward to Book 3. I’d recommend any fantasy lover give these a go.
I immediately began reading Solatium, book two of this series, after finishing book one, Nolander. The author continued this amazing story in book two in an action-packed, thrilling ride. I will be watching for book three of this series! Highly recommend!
Elizabeth is finally settling into her life in New York. As a trainee, her job is learning how to keep humans oblivious of the Second Emanation. Things get weird when her superior, Lord Cordus disappears and the team must combat a dangerous Second.
Like the first book, this feels like three books. In part 1, Beth adjusts to her Nolander life assuming she understands its dynamics. Part 2 throws those assumptions away. Cordus sends her on a mission to Fur, home of the Ice Men. The trip is long and perilous. Beth must learn who she can trust. Part 3 happens somewhere in this process and marks the point where she opens her eyes and starts making decisions for herself.
Again, I am conflicted about the characters. Most are morally questionable, challenging Beth's attempts to remain true to her beliefs. What will happen next?
Amazing complexity. I enjoyed the countless cultures and points of view that Mills took care in creating. I could easily spend years reading more of these worlds! Haven't been drawn to a series like this in years. Excellent story telling.
Imaginative, Fae brought to the current century and a reasonable approximation of what Underhill might actually be. Well written prose with well considered pacing. So again.... When is the next book available... Get busy!
This story is absolutely stunning. I could not put it down. The imagery, storyline, emotional immersion are brilliant. I am praying this series gets finished. Please, Please continue on!!!! It is well worth the sleepless nights!!!
I think this second book in the series was even better than the first which is saying a lot because the first book was excellent.
Beth Ryder has discovered a whole new world living right alongside humankind. She is one of the rare people who can see the other worldly creatures called ‘Second Emanations or S-Ems’ who live amongst humans. Some S-Ems disguise themselves as humans and some actually look human and those are the ones who humans can see but because they appear human, nobody suspects they are not. S-Ems come from other realms or what this author calls ‘stratums’ which are worlds layered over the human world with hidden entryways into each.
Humans like Beth who can see S-Ems are called Nolanders. They usually have gifts like healing, making fire, making barriers, tracking amongst others which I would call magical but the author describes them as working essence. Some Nolanders have strong gifts and others have weaker gifts. At first, Beth is unaware of her gift but everyone who has touches her…S-Ems and Nolanders can tell if someone is weaker or stronger than them by touching the other person…tells her she is strong.
The first rule of being a Nolander is to make sure humankind does not find out about S-Ems or stratums. Unfortunately, Beth had no idea she was a Nolander at first and showed a few black and white photographs that she had taken to a bunch of people in a café in her small town of a weird looking foot and a bald man hunched over walking down the street naked. The foot was scaled and looked like a monster’s foot. She hadn’t seen anything while shooting the film but saw it after she had developed it. The townsfolk thought someone had played a hoax on her but another Nolander just happened to be in the café that day which ended up causing Beth to be thrown into a whole new life.
Beth ends up being taken to New York, where a powerful Second named Cordus is in control. It turns out that powerful Seconds have divided up the world into territories and each territory is controlled by one of the powers, even the other stratums have controlling powers. Seconds have gifts also and Cordus’ gift is mind control. Beth watched as he made a Green Man tear himself apart in order for Cordus to get information out of him. Another Nolander named Kara told her that Cordus mind controlled her into having sex with him even though she did not want to and then let her remember it afterwards. Cordus is beautiful, almost too beautiful but in Beth’s mind he is a monster.
Justine, Beth’s sister-in-law is also a Second but she has lost part of her memory. Justine has been married to Beth’s older brother for a long time and has four children with him and seemed like an ordinary woman, albeit very bitchy and who always seems to have hated Beth for no reason, so Beth was shocked to learn she was not human. Beth watched her turn from a deer into weird blue balls and then into a human again. When she turned back into a human, she lost a part of her memory. Cordus believes that one of the blue cloud-like balls may have gotten lost and might be what is causing the memory loss.
Cordus is holding Justine prisoner until she can get her memory back. She’s not in a cell or anything. She is in her own suite in Cordus’ gigantic mansion but her husband and children have no idea where she is or even if she is alive. It seems Justine was formerly married to Limu, the power who holds another territory and one of Cordus’ strongest adversaries, and Limu claims that Justine stole a weapon from him. Justine, of course, doesn’t remember. She thinks she is just an average housewife who is being held against her will. Limu wants Justine back but Cordus refuses. An unfortunate consequence of Beth’s picture sharing was that the monster whose foot was photographed was killed. Beth had met him. His name was Bob. He was an ice-man, kind of like a Yeti, and he was docile and kind. But because he let himself be photographed, even though there was no way he could have known because usually he wouldn’t show up in a photo, he was ordered to be executed.
One day, Cordus brings Beth into his office. He calls her Elizabeth Joy Ryder which, to me, sounds sexual for some reason. He tells her he needs her to go on a mission for him and that she is the only one that can do it. She needs to go to Fur, the land of the Ice-People, to find out about the sky blue balls that he thinks are part of something called Heaven’s Eye. He tells her that she will live with the Ice Mothers who are the leaders of Fur because they have a huge ancient library where she can study and learn about Heaven’s Eye. It seems Limu is planning on using his weapon…when or if he finds out where Justine has hidden it…to erupt a volcano in Yellowstone Park. The weapon will enhance the eruption and wipe out everything west of the Mississippi which in turn will change the structure of the world, both economically and ecologically. Cordus needs the missing piece of Heaven’s Eye so Justine can remember where the weapon is to keep it out of Limu’s hands.
It is obvious to everyone except for Beth that Cordus has manipulated her mind because she is happy and all gung-ho for going on this mission where she has to travel through many dangerous stratums and it will take her months to get to Fur, a land of ice and snow where temperatures are below freezing. She doesn’t even think to call her brother or niece to even tell them she is leaving. Her friends who she has made since living in New York, other Nolanders, are worried about her but she packs up happily and goes on her trip.
Only one person from New York goes with her on the trip and it happens to be John Williams who she cannot stand. She thinks he is a sadist who enjoys killing and is an asshole but he is strong and can make barriers to protect her. They travel to North Carolina where the first stratum can be accessed. When she looks through her backpack that the staff had packed for her, she finds 52 toothbrushes and thinks someone has played a joke on her but she soon learns that it isn’t so. After entering the first stratum, she hears someone call her the “unfortunate solatium” which means a thing given to someone for compensation. She is then told that Cordus is giving her to the Ice People because they demanded compensation for the loss of Bob and that she will be living with them for thirteen years. She realizes that Cordus had used mind control on her to manipulate her into coming but there is nothing she can do so she continues on with her journey.
Most of the book is about her journey and the difficulties of the journey through different stratums. It is also about her learning about her own power. She learns that she may be as powerful, if not more powerful than Cordus, and that giving her to the Ice People makes little sense. Why would they get such a compensation when all Seconds know the consequences of being seen by humans? Also why would he want to give such a powerful weapon as Beth away? Her gift is that she can basically irradiate things. She wiped out half a stratum when she was being attacked by weird bones of dinosaurs wrapped in vines. She hasn’t learned how to control it yet and is afraid that if she loses control that she could end up killing millions like a nuclear bomb.
The books was entertaining and kept me reading page after page but I did find the traveling a little monotonous. I think some of it could have been left out but it did help show her grow and it gave me a little respect for Williams. I know he is supposed to be bad but I don’t think he is all bad. I think he is just a slave to Cordus and has to do his bidding and he has had a rough life where he trusts and likes no one.
When I finished the book, I wanted more so I read the little short story called Theriac. It is only about 45 minutes worth of reading and it about another character and gives no clue about what is to come….Dang! The next book is due to come out in early 2016 which seems like a long time to me. That is why I usually don’t start a new series until four or five books have already been published but this one was an exception. I will definitely be getting the next book when it comes out.
I read Nolander as part of the Gods and Mortals anthology. Solatium was just as enjoyable as the first book in the series. I'd like to note that this book has obviously been edited by someone with a good grasp of the English language. I did not find any errors in grammar or spelling, or inappropriate words being used to flesh out a sentence. I am disappointed that the third book has not been released yet, although it was supposed to come out in 2016 and here we are in the middle of 2017. Solatium did not have a cliffhanger ending but there is obviously much more to come. Looking forward to it.
was a good story, but have been left hanging bcz the author has not done the last book, which was supposed to be released in "early 2016" according to her website, and she is not replying anymore to any fans' reviews begging to know when, or even IF, there will be an ending to the story! I really hope she does complete this story, bcz it was good and has much potential for additional stories to be told from it.
Loved Nolander and solarium, amazingly written and a very gripping storyline...... however here comes the but..... if you are like me and get very much into storylines that you have to finish to know what’s going on then it’s a bit of a let down. The reason I say this as the 2nd book finishes with a lot more to be said and finding when this will happen or even if it will happen is hard to find, I’ve searched the web and nothing comes up for me :-(
I just finished this second book of this series. I thought book 1 was really good, and this book was great! The worlds were described such that I could see mental images that were real. The characters are all great... and I especially like Ghosteater. I really hope that there is an Emanations book #3.
The imagery of the story is wonderful! Reading of the varied stratums, the elders, and nolanders were easy to get immersed in! I do hope this is NOT the last book for the short series as (trying not to be a spoiler) I would like the story to come full circle and a face off with Lord Cordus and a Victorious Miss Ryder!
Stumbled upon the 1st book in the series in a free bundle. Loved the main character and her development, I feel like it is the most realistic character I have read in years. The 2nd book only adds awesomeness because we get to ezplore the universe while seeing the develooment of characters. I can't wait for the next book to be out!
The story is evolving! Beth is sent on a mission to the second emanation to retrieve an object of power. She makes new friends and enemies, learns more about the reality she finds herself in, and begins to understand more about her own powers. I hope there is a 3rd book in the series. This one ended on a perfect point to begin the next chapter.
Kept me interested from beginning to end. Lot's of fascinating creatures and well thought out 'worlds' started to get sad as I neared the end of the book, didn't want it to end. Looking forward to book 3. Go Becca!
I'm totally engrossed in this world after reading the second book. The depth and complexity of the world and the growth of the main character, Beth, have kept me enthralled. Can't wait for book three.
I really enjoyed this book. I did try to buy the next one as at the end it said it would be out in 2016 but its not there to buy. Rarely do I buy a series. That's how much I enjoyed it. No spoilers from me. But if you read the first one, get this one to.
I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book. Waiting for the next book to come out. Will Beth realize her potential? Will the library give her the answers she seeks? Will she ever see her friends and family again?
This book is able to grab and keep the attention of someone who has been reading novels for many years and grown bored of the “norm” narrative. There is enough intrigue to keep me coming back for more. Well done, author.
Loved the story line, it was absolutely magnetic! I feel like I personally know each and every character, as they carried me with them on their adventures.
