The Polar Express-Reis naar de Noordpool is een spannend verhaal van een jongetje dat op kerstavond wakker wordt van een heleboel lawaai. Hij kijkt uit het raam en ziet iets geweldigs: een gigantische stoomtrein. 'Ga je mee?' vraagt de norse conducteur en het jongetje stapt in. Op dat moment weet hij nog niet dat hij het grootste avontuur uit zijn hele leven tegemoet gaat!

De trein rijdt richting Noordpool, waar de kerstman woont, en de jongen maakt vriendjes met de andere kinderen in de trein. Na een superspannende reis komt The Polar Express eindelijk aan op de plaats van bestemming: Noordpool Stad.
Zijn het jongetje en zijn vriendjes nog op tijd voor de eerste kerstcadeaus?

Als ich den Film vor einigen Jahren gesehen habe war ich enttäuscht. Viele sind ja davon begeistert, aber mir persönlich war er für einen Weihnachtsfilm für Kinder viel zu düster, auch wenn er eine schöne Botschaft hat. Deshalb wollte ich diese Geschichte gerne in der schriftlichen Form kennenlernen, die mich aber leider auch nicht überzeugen konnte.

Der Schreibstil ist für ein Kinderbuch okay und einfach gehalten. Der Junge, der im ganzen Buch keinen Namen bekommt, zweifelt an der Echtheit des Weihnachtsmanns und dem Zauber der Weihnacht - doch plötzlich steht mitten in der Nacht, genau um 23.55 Uhr, der Polarexpress vor seiner Tür. Natürlich steigt er ein und erlebt eine abenteuerliche Fahrt zum Nordpol, auf der einige wichtige Botschaften übermittelt werden. Leider war für mich weder eine schöne, weihnachtliche Stimmung vorhanden, noch konnte man irgendwie die Gefühle der Kinder nachvollziehen.

Es geht zwar alles in einem guten Tempo voran und es geht einiges schief auf der Fahrt, aber es wirkte sehr plump, einfach eine Anneinanderreihung von Ereignissen ohne etwas besonderes für mich rüberzubringen. Gerade für ein Kinderbuch eine eher triste Art und Weise, etwas zu erzählen und auch für mich als Erwachsenen war es ziemlich langweilig.

Das einzig schöne daran waren die kleinen Botschaften, die aber meist nur zwischen den Zeilen zu lesen waren:

- Der zweifelnde Junge, der seinen Glauben an den Zauber der Weihnacht wiederfindet
- Das unsichere Mädchen, das Selbstvertrauen lernt
- Und der einsame Junge, der endlich Freunde findet


Ich kann hier leider nur 1 Stern vergeben für zwei Zitate die etwas schönes aussagen, die aber in einer zu farblosen und lanweiligen Geschichte keinen Raum gefunden haben.

"Manchmal", sagte der Schaffner, "ist Sehen das Gleiche wie Glauben.
"Und manchmal", er kam ganz dicht an sie heran, um die Sache besonders zu betonen,
"sind die wirklichsten Dinge auf der Welt gerade die, die wir nicht sehen können." S. 72

"Es gibt kein größeres Geschenk als die Freundschaft." S. 120

Leuk luchtig boekje voor tussendoor. Denk perfect als je alvast in kerstsferen wil komen 😉🎄 Vond de schrijfstijl af en toe iets te warrig, maar leest ondanks dat wel prima weg. De film vind ik persoonlijk wel een stuk leuker dan het boek..

Une histoire qui fait rêver mais ne diffère en aucun point du film du même nom. Certains passages sont vraiment vides d'émotions car ils décrivent une succession d'événements très courts, d'autres m'ont fait frissonner en soulignant des éléments qui ne ressortent pas aurant dans le film.
Il m'a donné envie de lire le livre dont le film est inspiré : "Boréal Express"

Ich habe vor Jahren mal den Anfang vom Film gesehen, daher hat mich der Gedanke daran das Buch zu lesen schon ein wenig begleitet. Dieses Weihnachten ist es dann wohl endlich so weit, und ich fand diese Geschichte wirklich wirklich schön :) eine super bildliche Beschreibung von der Umgebung, und eine echt wichtige Message! Wünschte, ich hätte es schon als Kind gelesen :)

Ich hab noch nie ein Buch gelesen, welches in einem so schlechten Schreibstil verfasst wurde. Es hat sich angefühlt, also ob sich jemand mit Stift und Papier vor‘s Fernseh gesetzt hat und dann einfach stur mitgeschrieben hat, was gerade zu sehen ist im Film - ohne Emotion, ohne Charaktertiefe. Die 2 Sterne gibt‘s nur weil ich den Film und den Plot an sich total liebe und das einfach meine Kindheit ist! Nichts gibt mir mehr Weihnachtsstimmung als der FILM Polarexpress.
Das Buch ist allerdings nicht mehr als enttäuschend.

All I know is that I wouldn't board a train without any prior knowledge of where it's going. Also, who knew that all it took to meet Father Christmas for free was not to believe in him? I do miss the special holiday and with the summer heat hear in Malta, my desire for winter to commence is immeasurable. This was a sweet story that captured the magic of Christmas brilliantly though simultaneously unusually. I haven't yet watched the movie and don't intend on doing so now that I've read the adaptation. The main characters are never given names which was something new to me as a prolific reader and although short and sweet it was difficult to follow at some points. I really appreciated how there wasn't a moment of relaxation and how there were scenes of action or conflict at every turn. Weiss is an author I can get behind and miss that I've grown old because of her writing.

I liked this book because it reminded me about Christmas and it cool how the ticket got lost because it flew with the wolves and then a bird came and grabbed it and and then the bird took it too it's bays and the baby bird spit it out and it fell then it came back to the train. I think 3rd though 5th because it is a good story and fun. Will they make it back on the way home from after seeing Santa. And the little boy got a bell from Santa and he lost it will he find it.

Reading the Jr. Novel is like watching the movie, but with more of the character's thoughts in it. It's just as magical and a great story kids and adults will love. "All Aboard! Well, are you coming? Why the North Pole, of course. This is The Polar Express!" 😊❄️🚂🎅🏻

Een prima kort kerstverhaal, maar ik vond het allemaal maar een beetje vaag.. bijna niemand had een naam en de pacing liep voor mij ook niet echt lekker.. Het idee van dit boek is goed, maar ik vind de film toch echt een stuk beter gedaan

Om de magie van Kerst te beleven, las ik samen met m’n dochters over de reis met de Polar Express.
Hoewel het plot wel mooi is, vond ik het boek niet zo betoverend. Ik vermoed dat de film beter is. 😅

A CHILDREN'S FANTASY LIVES ON!

This delightful Junior Novel reads swiftly and will enchant kids of all ages. In this adaptation from his original picture book Van Allsburg has expanded the challenges and dangers of the trip to the arctic north. So much action, energy and adrenaline must leave the three main children in utter exhaustion, before their actual arrival at North Pole City. Nor did the author ever clarify the identity of the mysterious King of Hobos who rides al fresco, but steps in to lend a hand now and then to our unlikely, unnamed protagonists.

The Boy wants to believe in Santa but is wavering in doubt; on Christmas Eve he is astounded to awake to the sound of an old-
fashioned steam engine chugging along his street—stopping just to pick him up as a passenger in pajamas. The Girl is a sweet, compassionate child, who just lacks confidence in her decisions. The Lonely Boy barely decides to get on board, hides in a back car sadly, ashamed that Christmas is rarely celebrated at his house. Keeping the show running on time, if you please, is the firmly kind Conductor, who punches unusual words on their golden tickets. What will the kids learn when they observe Santa’s Departure ceremony, after handing out the First Gift of Christmas? Each of the four main juvenile characters has a personality-changing experience on that most magic night. If you listen carefully on Christmas morning, can you still hear the bell?

Leuk kerstverhaal!

Deze luisterboekversie is me ook zeer goed bevallen. Het werd extra leuk, toen ik na een paar minuutjes luisteren ineens de stem herkende: Frank Groothof van Sesamstraat. Al is het toch zo'n 25 jaar geleden dat ik Sesamstraat keek, die stem is blijkbaar blijven hangen, en door dat jeugdsentiment werd het toch wel extra leuk. En wat een geweldige verteller is Frank Groothof! :)

I think I was expecting a little more. After seeing the movie, which seemed to me metaphorical, I have hoped the book would enlighten me on some of the characters, like the hobo. But it didn't. The book was just a novelised version of the screenplay with a plain writing style.

Eine schöne Geschichte, die zum Träumen einlädt, mehr aber auch leider nicht. Der Schreibstil ist mir zu holbrig und gibt mir das Gefühl, dass nur schnell was geschrieben werden sollte. Mir fehlen liebevoll beschriebene Details, die die Geschichte etwas lebendiger erscheinen lassen.

I absolutely adore this book! It brings the magic of Christmas to life, but also showcases the incredible Christmas spirit. I read this book every year in December!

Do me a favor, don't watch the movie. Read the book instead.! Just atmospheric and nostalgic.
