Banished from her divine post as immortal-executioner, Adeena the Fate of Violent of Ends, is cast into the mortal realm. Redemption is promised if she watches over and protects the drunken, philandering King of Tesserus. But as she observes his every move, something unexpected begins to stir within her - a strange, slow unravelling. The longer she remains tethered to the mortal world, the more human she becomes. Torn between duty and the new, fragile emotions awakening inside her. Adeena must confront the very fate she once dealt to others before it consumes her entirely.
Ok, this was amazing! The storyline is so unique and unlike anything I’ve read before. Adeena, Fate of Violent Ends, is banished to protect the drunken King of Tesserus in the mortal world. As she too slowly transforms to mortal, the lines between duty and desire start to blur. She is forced to reckon with human emotions she long deemed alien.
The dry humour in A King’s Fate is unreal. Malik is consistently pushing Adeena’s buttons, and she consistently responds with the kind of deadpan sass that had me spraying mouthfuls of tea across the room and yelling “just bang already”. The chemistry is unholy, and the way every scene crackles with tension had me flipping pages like my life depended on it.
This story was unlike anything else I’ve ever read. Truly.
While I’m not usually the biggest fan of fantasy, AFK completely gripped me just a few chapters in — and didn’t let go. Once I found my footing in the AFK universe, I was hooked harder than I ever expected.
I quickly fell in love with Adeena, our fierce and magical FMC. She’s everything a woman should embody — she’s powerful, loyal and unapologetically bold. She’s the kind of friend you want on your side, whether in battle or in life. Her love runs deep for those she cares for (even though she’s not exactly sure what that strange feeling is). The way she took on the monsters lurking in plain sight - she was quietly fierce and astute.. Proud doesn’t even cover it.
And omg, the tension between her and the King? Delicious. Every interaction had me holding my breath, devouring every word, giddy like a kid in a candy store at their banter. When they finally vibed (that’s the word I’ll use, because anything more is spoiler territory)… just, chef’s kiss. Except, was it, though?
What I want to say next… I can’t. For fear of spoilers. But just know this: You’ll sit there for a good 10 mins after questioning your whole life and thinking WHAT. THE. FUCK.
I’m just shook. Shook by the ending. Shook by the journey. Shook by the sheer brilliance of this story and the mind that created it. The way this talented author sprinkled in such deep thoughts that are SO important to our real world honestly baffled me, in the best way.
I genuinely could not recommend this book more. And when you finish — please, please, please — come back to me with all your thoughts/feelings/screams. Because… Oh. My. God.
Loving this story of an immortal executioner being cast into the mortal realm and having to navigate human emotions. The contrast between her former divine role and her new mortal existence creates a fantastic read.
The writing style, reminiscent of authors like Janny Wurts and Michael Scott Rohan, is likely to appeal to fans of fantasy and mythology. The themes of redemption, duty, and the complexities of human emotions are all woven together beautifully. The author created several worlds in time and space and epic battles.
The character of Adeena is really compelling, with her tough exterior and vulnerable interior. Her transformation from an immortal to a mortal, and the emotions that come with it, make for a captivating read.
The relationship between Adeena and the King of Tesserus also adds an interesting dynamic, with the contrast between her duty to protect him and her growing feelings for him. The moral ambiguity of her situation, where she's torn between her duty and her new emotions, creates a sense of tension and conflict.
Each new chapter reels you in a little more and then a lot more. I fell in love with the main characters and teared up a little and yelled out loud. The author did a fantastic job creating this world.
I was in the worlds worst book slump and this is the first book I’ve managed to read without skipping paragraphs in weeks. If that’s not high enough praise I don’t know what is.
I absolutely love these characters. They’re so unapologetically dysfunctional and they really double down on their vices in a way I don’t think many people capture well in their stories. Nobody in this story is a hero. No one is pretending to be a hero. They’re all just surviving in the only way they’ve ever known and that happens to include sacrificing their morals when necessary.
Adeena is absolutely everything. I love the parts when she’s so bothered by her humanity that it just pisses her off all the more. I can’t wait to see more of how her relationship with death unfolds over the next book. The teasing throughout this had me on the edge of my seat.
Malik. What a menace. I think he really encompasses trauma well. His internal monologue was so incredibly amusing. I love the offbeat sentences that actually showed similar thoughts to how a normal person would process situations.
The slow burn and tension was absolute perfection. If they’re not insult flirting I just don’t want it!
Thank you Anneka-Rose Burrell for the eARC of this book. This is my honest opinion.
A King's Fate is a slow-burn ache, and morally grey delicious.
Adeena, the Fate of Violent Ends, is banished to the mortal realm and forced to protect the reckless King of Tesserus. She’s cold, calculating, and absolutely feral in her restraint. He’s chaotic, charming, and hiding wounds deeper than his smirk.
Watching them clash, unravel, and almost fall was agony in the best way.
This isn’t just enemies-to-lovers—it’s enemies-to-guardianship-to-I’d burn the world for you but I can’t even admit I care. It's just so good.

"If you do not know, learn. If you do not have, take. If you've no conviction, find some."
A King's Fate had me in a chokehold the entire time I was reading it. I could not put it down and every moment I had spare, I was rushing off to read it. The world-building in this book is so alluring and rich, you can taste it on your tongue. Some readers say that you should be told and not shown by an author but this book is so descriptive of it's scenery and I wouldn't have it any other way, it's definitely needed in order to get the mental cinematic masterpiece this book is. The amount of work and planning that must have gone into this story can be seen through how well the story flows. The plot moves at a good pace and there are quite a few subplots supporting the main plot of the story that gives the whole book a nice, round structure with no parts left lacking.
A King's Fate introduces it's readers to a host of perfectly flawed and loveable characters who make mistakes and decisions that you can understand and relate to because they are perfectly human and mortal. There are so many outside forces, twists and turns in this book and the characters react to these events almost canonically how one would expect. The undertone of romance in this book was such a refreshing hit. It definitely supported the story and didn't overwhelm it. Romance is not the focus of A King's Fate but is instead just very hinted at between the two main characters, Adeena and Malik. They form a very tentative tolerance of each other to begin with that leads into a respectful friendship before ending in a budding romance and possible betrayal?
I can not put into words how much I enjoyed reading this book. I ate it up. I will definitely be reading the rest of the series and looking for anything else written by this amazing author. As a warning, please adhere to the trigger warning that the lovely Anneka-Rose very kindly leaves in the book for all future readers. This book does have very heavy trigger scenes.
There is something so incredibly enticing in the way Anneka writes, the way her characters pull you in with their snappy dialogue, larger than life personalities, their flaws and of course their fates.
The world that she has created is so breathtakingly vast, but nuanced and within the first few chapters I felt like I was walking beside these characters through their cruel and unfair predicaments.
Adeena is the Fate of Violent Ends, tasked (or punished) to watch over a drunk and debauched King, Malik, who mourns the loss of his family and living a life he never intended. Their first meeting doesn't go to plan, so Adeena stays in the veil, invisible and loathing the king and all he stands for - but still unable to escape her own fate. So she waits, each day bringing her closer to a mortal life.
But this is only the beginning of their story. What unravels across the next few hundred pages is an intricate story of hate, tested friendships, blood and gore, fear, anger, loss and the beginnings of trust, of letting one's guard down...
then this one needs to be on your tbr. This is a must read for anyone looking to sink their teeth into a gritty fantasy with second to none world building.
Quite simply - this book, and Adeena and Malik will stay with me for the longest time, and I have a feeling book two is going to end me (in the best way). I read this one prior to official release day.
A Kings Fate: we’ve got Adeena, an immortal executioner, the “Fate of Violent Ends” who’s stuck babysitting a drunken, skirt-chasing king Malik. But let me tell you, the tension between these two is so slow-burn it should come with a fire hazard warning. I spent half the time screaming: “Can you two hate f*** already?!”
The worldbuilding is rich, layered, and a little brain bending at first, but once you hit that halfway point, the plot starts plotting and suddenly you’re like ohhh here we go…
But then… just as you’re deeply invested… Anneka slaps you a little and goes HA HA here’s a cliffhanger with a cheeky touch of betrayal (an angry message was sent immediately when I finished).
If you’re into immortals with feminine rage, reluctant & whorey kings and tension so thick you could cut it with a dagger, this one is for you.
Thank you Anneka for the ARC and congratulations on your debut novel!
“But she. She was living art. Living, moving, breathing, violent, impelling, art.”
I really enjoyed this book. It’s very different and unique from anything I’ve read before. It’s such a slow burn that I wouldn’t say it is a spicy read and I don’t often read non-spicy books so if you are like me I recommend you break that pattern because this is definitely worth the read. The chapters are long but have page breaks so if you don’t like long chapters you can still take a break at those sections if needed. I won’t go into too much detail because I think the blurb explains that enough but I will say that the ending has left me longing for book 2! I cannot wait for the next book in the series ❤️
This is one of the most beautifully written books I've come across in a long time!
If you're into dual POV, forced proximity, slowburn, reluctant hero, and a stabby FMC, then this is the perfect book for you. This book revived me from my readers slump while also giving me the inspiration to write my own novel (which I have been slacking on the last few months).
Honestly, do yourself a favour and GET. THIS. BOOK.
I will be honest I was one of the lucky beta readers for this book and I was so glad she picked me ♥️.
This book is just so utterly fantastic. You get all the feelings, and truly deep and wonderful characters. The story is just so original and beautiful and I cannot wait to see what the next installment has in store.
Please give this one a chance I'll be surprised if you regret it.
