Matt Hernandez used to wish that one day he’d get a chance to race in Formation 1 alongside his childhood sweetheart. Now, Matt and Robert drive for the same team, but their relationship is sour at best. When a racing incident bleeds into their off-track life, their team principal gives them an ultimatum—play nice for the cameras or get the axe. Every day is a struggle, but the more time they spend in close proximity, the more that delicate line separating their past and present blurs.

These books are fun, short reads. I do wish there was more of them together. This book is told from Matt’s POV only so we don’t get to see Robert’s side but we see in small spurts how they became friends and how Matt left.
You don’t need to know about racing to read these but I feel like there is a lot of racing lingo and I don’t know much of it at all. The racing does feel more prevalent than the romance.
The cover for this series is simple but I really think it works.
One flaw is that there are no chapters so the story just goes on. That wouldn’t be a problem but in my reading format I cannot tell that the one scene is over and now it’s a totally different time and location. That threw me off in the first book also.
I am still enjoying this series enough to read the next one!
this was cute! this is by far the most enjoyable f1 romance i've read - there's a good blend of racing / romance. she's short and sweet with one spice scene and a satisfying conclusion.
Omg… where do I even START with Switch Positions by Desiree Champagne 😩🔥
This book?? Had me LOCKED IN. I was giggling, stressing, and fully kicking my feet like I had zero responsibilities 🫠
The animosity between these two??? delicious. The tension??? actually unbearable (in the best way). From page one you can feel there’s history there—unresolved feelings, things left unsaid—and I was DYING to know what went down 👀
And the banter?? top tier. Like sharp, emotional, a little petty… everything I love. Watching them go from barely speaking (and when they do it’s chaos) to slowly peeling back layers?? I ate that up 😭
They were both SO frustrating at times because… just COMMUNICATE?? but also?? it made everything hit so much harder when they finally did. And when that shift happens??? yeah… I was flipping pages like a loon because I needed MORE 🏎️💨
One thing I absolutely love about this series is the fun twist on the team names—like McLean instead of McLaren and Formation 1 instead of Formula 1 😂 It’s playful and honestly made all the racing stuff way more enjoyable for someone like me who is not an F1 girly at all. But somehow?? I was INVESTED.
And Matt… oh Matt 🥺 My heart broke for him again and again. He’s so painfully relatable—the one who’s always overlooked, always fighting for his place—and it just made every emotional moment hit that much deeper. The angst?? perfection. The past vs present timelines?? chef’s—okay wait no—just PERFECT.
Seeing them go from years (and I mean YEARS) of miscommunication and hurt… to finally choosing each other?? yeah I had something in my eye during that confession 🥹
And that ending??? That moment where everything comes together—the race, the dream, the emotions— I actually don’t have words. The final pages?? ruined me in the best way.
I really didn’t expect to love this as much as I did… but here we are. 🫶✨
omg! the tension. the unresolved feelings! gah this one had me feeing all the emotions especially with the flashbacks of their childhood. the glimpses into their friendship.
gosh these two were both so mad at one another for not being able to communicate their feelings properly, and after years and we’re talking YEARS. they finally opened up all thanks to the PR nightmare they started that they needed to fix.
seeing them go from hate to love was amazing! i could not get enough of them. seeing them be them again and then the confession gah! i’m pretty sure i had something in my eye
I LOVED this read! Amazing world building…I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. For starters, I'd love to give both Mateo/Matt and Robert/Bobby a hug lol Throughout the entirety of the book, Matt is treated despicably by Team Anders. Just because they didn't want him anymore. The books cast a horrible light on Robert because neither of them is aware of the extent of the teams' antics when it comes to the other driver. I honestly hated Robert thinking that he could go along with Matt being treated like crap. Surprisingly, Robert's protective side for Matt showed up and it was glorious! The love that these two have for one another runs deep. There's a thin line between love and hate and boy did these two tread that line… My favorite moments were the flashbacks to where the two teens fell in love. I'd LOVE to see this as a feature film! I believe that it's that great! It's passionate in several ways, unbelievable angst and so much yearning for two men who slowly find their way back to one another. I loved the racing sports element that brought all the action and book was hilarious! Laurent needs a book please! I can't say that enough. The ending was pure perfection, so much so that I cheered aloud with a huge YES! This is M/M done right! I can't wait for the rest of the series and I'm hoping to get glimpses of Matt and Robert in the rest of the series! So many stars! ❤️
Thanks to BookSirens and the author for the ARC copy. This has not affected my review at all.
Matt has always dreamt of racing at Formation 1 with Robert, his childhood sweetheart, but now, years later and racing for the same team, their relationship couldn't be worse. Until a race incident makes their team principal take a harsh decision: either they behave and play nice for the cameras, showing off being nice teammates, or they're both out of the team. Of course, being put together for media duties and spending more time with each other, will reopen but also be able to heal some wounds, as long as the both of them are willing to.
I must admit, I only got interested in this one because I'm a huge fan of some motor sports, and I though this one could be fun. And was. I. Right. Not only was it fun, but it was wholesome, emotional, sad and hopeful.
Matt and Robert has history, and it doesn't go well, until it looks like it might, but the past is ever present, so who knows if they can actually make it work. Their relationship was my favorite part of the book, which is what I think romance authors should aim for...(in my opinion of someone that barely reads into the genre). But, yeah, they do work well together, are quite cute and develop quite a healthy relationship, despite all the bad things, and the trouble and even whatever struggles the sport puts them through.
I was so in, that I'm glad it was a short read, 'cause I kind of just spent the day reading it instead of doing other things I had in mind😂 All this to say that the book was addicting in the best way possible, catching and just kept things going, even with the past scenes. Normally, I think those can slower down a book, but not this case. As in, they just added to the overall of it and kept me going to know more about our men and how they've come to be how they are in their present.
If I had to ad a "but", it would just be a very personal opinion and taste. But, since this book is based into motor sports and such, I would have liked to see much more. I'm not saying we don't get aspects of the world, we do, I just would have liked for the author to dig some more in that route...? Like, the book is amazing as it is and the intricacies of the world we get paint a vivid picture. But I'm just such a fun of motor sports and the worlds authors put out there, that I wouldn't have minded having more and more. But, like, it is not detrimental, that for sure. Just me and my weird likes for books😂
Overall, either a fan of romance or a fan of motor sports, I definitely recommend this one. Fun, emotional, cute, with two complex characters that learn from their errors and grow emotionally and mentally together in life. Not many books can make me like a romance so much that I give the book five stars, but I enjoyed this one so much, than I'm giving it all the stars, so congratulations to the author. Definitely worth the chance if y'all been thinking about it ;)
This book actually made me so sad because I have to admit that I fell for the "Esteban is a bad guy" narrative that Alpine was pushing for years, and ever since he switched to Haas this year, I have liked him so much better and he also just seems so much happier.
I had tears in my eyes for a big part of this book, because you really just portrayed how shitty they were to Matteo so well. And
As I said in my review for Dirty Air, I love this series so much, especially because Desiree clearly actually watches racing and therefore accurately portrays it. Quietly, and without any pressure, begging for an endless amount more books for this series!
It's almost stupid how much I liked this book. I'm not even a fan of F1, don't know anything about it. My sister is, though, and so is one of my closest friends, and since they talk so much about it and my sister is going to make me watch it soon, I figured that what's at least one way to make it more interesting? Make it gay.
So when this popped up in my suggestions I decided to give it a go. And I absolutely loved it.
Confusing things aside, like why the team names were silly almost copies of the real one and why it's called Formation instead of Formula, I found the F1 talk actually a bit interesting. And the story? Oh my, the story...
My heart broke for Matt, over and over and over. The angst was absolutely perfect, the jumps between current and past time handled absolutely perfectly, and the end? That one moment when his dream came true? The final race for his team?
So good. So perfect. And the final few pages? I can't. I don't even have words.
I really didn't think I would love it this much. Like it yes, because the whole teammate/rival thing is always a nice touch, but this much? Nah, I didn't think I would, but now I think it's one of my favorite reads this year. Absolutely stunning.
I received a complimentary copy of this book for free. All opinions are my own.
People who love second chance will almost certainly love this story. It has terrific enemies to lovers vibes—truly they are enemies, and that doesn’t go away easily, though you don’t know why for a long time—UST, pining…good things.
But for me it was more of a 2 for the romance and a 5 for the amazing authentic racing world and atmosphere and fun other drivers and pit crew characters. Once I realized, about halfway through, just how much of a second chance it really is, my heart started feeling hurt, and then by the end I had a knot in my stomach in a bad way and wound up feeling sad.
But that’s Me. I settled on 3 stars because the writing, storytelling, and emotional work is stellar, and apart from one act of violence that needed to be addressed and resolved, and still angers me, the rest I think will please second-chance readers a lot.
For me, this in part didn’t work because I needed Robert’s point of view at times. This is told only in Mat (Matthew/Mateo)’s POV, which led to not having nearly enough insight to Robert’s view of…anything.
It will work for others, because the author is terrific at Showing/hinting/revealing things anyway, but for me, that moment of violence, and then something that happened during intimacy that really threw me out of the moment, I just…needed to know WTF was going on with Robert, and it’s not There.
From ages four and five until 9 years ago, these two were childhood best friends, kart racing buddies and then sweethearts. Robert was Mat’s first crush and lover. Mat was…not Robert’s, although Robert fell for him too. And you might guess that for me, that was the first crack in the romance. Definitely realistic, and sweet, but…for me, also not. Mat’s mom was a blue collar worker who met Robert and his parents by cleaning their house, and they got the boys together to race karts and they hit it off, and Mat was actually the reason Robert kept racing, though Robert doesn’t really know that. There are complex and nuanced elements in the past the hit hard with revelations later, very well done.
Now they race for the same “Formation 1” (I assume based on Formula 1) team, and there is gut-wrenching, intense fuckery at play with management, who want to highlight the tall, blond, good-looking Robert who has most of the sponsorships at the expense of Mat, who is definitely the more talented driver with better chances to win, if only they’d let him. That heats up their ongoing enmity as Mat becomes more and more frustrated and Robert needles him.
It explodes in a wipeout for both, and the managers then force them to make appearances together and pretend to be friends for the press, no more fighting (even though management is a main part of the reason for the enmity, assholes). And then, for me, something unforgiveable (violence, not sex, I should clarify): . Once I found out what happened in the past to set them apart, I understood he probably had years of heartbreak and anger simmering, but, he never apologized or seemed to care that he could have seriously injured Mat, and I was not down with that. Just not okay.
That’s the only incident that really felt morally unaddressed and wrong. The other issue is a Me thing (sex) and when they finally are about to be intimate, we learn something emotionally poignant, that Mat Which I loved, but, Robert doesn't seem to care at all/I have no idea what he thought, how that impacted his view of Them (another place I really wanted his POV) and before that comes out, they are having a conversation about sexual safety status, and Robert never confirms or says anything about when he was last tested, is he negative, and he had a girlfriend when the book opened and has been with many other people, men and women, for years, and he doesn’t reveal his status. That was a big miss for me, especially with Mat’s vulnerability revealed, and them going bare immediately. And then he compounded the issue, and ruined the intense, steamy sweet intimacy for me with a whole (and I paraphrase here, not a real quote) “oh, I learned all this stuff from all my years of being with other people! Let me use it on you!” type line, and I was thrown out of the intimacy and just started feeling sicker and sicker from there.
I promise this will not bother most people and the scene is beautifully written, this author is so talented, but, that ruined it for me.
I appreciated that the past was revealed in short flashbacks that didn’t ruin momentum for the present, though some may find the switching back and forth a little jarring as it’s done with line breaks and you have to think for a moment to understand when past goes back to present, I thought it was done well enough, and it didn’t irritate me the way full chapter back and forth leaps in timing almost always do. And when we learn who really broke things down all those years ago, and that they chose racing over them, my heart was officially broken. Because there was more to it than that, and Robert’s father, who Mat thought had sponsored/supported him all this time/thought he owed him his career, has a lot to answer for, including whitewashing Mateo and gaslighting him into the closet, and that’s never resolved.
That was another reason I wanted Robert’s POV, because I suspected a conversation may have happened around this, and we never see/hear/find out anything about it, despite there being a moment when Robert stills and goes to make a phone call. In fact, I think retelling this story solely from Robert’s POV might be a strong book as well, one I’d read despite my personal icks with this one. The author is a strong writer.
The situation with Mat changing teams was satisfying due to the shitty way his current managers treat him, and I was glad someone recognized his true talent and that was going to go far better for him in the future.
My final issue with this is that once I found out that racing took priority over feelings, the ending didn’t feel solid or satisfying. One wasn’t the other’s priority, though there was a lot more to it than that, admittedly, but the only reason I think they might work out is a convenient change of situation at the end. It didn’t sit well. But again, I don’t think others will be bothered.
HFN, childhood best friends/sweethearts to enemies to slow-burn (high burn/UST) lovers. High stakes car racing, done very well. No OP action on page or drama; Robert has a girlfriend when the book opens and they break up well/quietly before anything happens between MCs. Safe for me on that front. Recommended, especially for those who enjoy second chance. But I loved book 1 so much more.
I can tell Desiree knows and follows racing. Finally a book that uses correct terminology and I loved the peek behind the scenes of the drivers' worlds. A quick read with some spice and angst. The pacing was great and the details were spot on. I look forward to reading the other books in the series.
This was a quick 150 page MM romance that felt like F1 fanfic hahah I loved it for what it was but the characters did feel very young. But the pacing was good, you could tell Desiree really watches F1 and I loved Mateo and Bobby 🥹
Good F1 book. Loved that Teo and Bobby became friends when little. Good friend to enemies. Then enemies to lovers. It was short but told a good story. It was also good to see how the team treats one driver from another.
3/5. That ending... it was a choice. Abrupt, no real resolution--just a vague nod to a possible outcome--and it definitely lacked overall, even for a short-form work.
My personal thoughts are not part of the rating, but I'm gonna stick a little in here for razzle-dazzle.
I fell out with someone in a similar fashion when I was much younger (don't play with me and act like you don't get what I'm saying because you know I mean choosing something over that person and ending things before they could even begin), and a couple of times over the years, I've sat and reminisced about how ridiculous we were as kids (compared to my now 39, 18 was a kid). Not once, in any look back or time with them face-to-face, did I ever feel the desire to beat the fucking shit out of them, harass and/or verbally abuse them, nor did I actually do those things. Why? Because even as a stupid, immature, freshly-minted adult, I wasn't an abusive, toxic douchebag. Ew. Thank you for playing, boss.
This is a second chance racing sports romance novella, featuring Matt Hernandez and Robert Miller, and is book two in the Formation 1 series.
Matt and his former childhood sweetheart Robert are now bitter teammates in Formation 1, forced to act friendly or risk losing their jobs. As they spend more time together, the tension between their past love and present rivalry becomes impossible to ignore.
These two ex best friends had a simmering attraction, even though they had been apart for years. There is more racing talk in this one and it was interesting to see how teammates interact on the track. It’s a great low angst read. Looking forward to the next book.
Things to expect in this book are: Book 2 in series Novella MM sports romance Childhood best friends Driver x Driver Enemies to more Teammates Forced proximity Second chance Spicy times HEA hint
This is the second book in the formation 1 series. This book is about two drivers on the same team. Matt and Robert, are childhood best friends turned enemies. After years of having to let Robert win, Matt is finally had enough and is leaving the team. after a few heated exchanges, the two have to pretend to be friends again. This PR scene forces them to actually become friends again and confront their feelings. They you realize that they both have feelings for one another and that the repression that Matt feels is all from Robert’s father. This book had the most delicious tension between the two main characters. For Matt, it has always been Robert and he realizes from a young age but feels that he couldn’t have both Robert and racing.
not used to rating conventions here but TRUST i loved this book so much !! oh my god, i didn't even realize how quickly i ran through the book until i looked down and realized i was??? more than 80% through?? god, i loved the dynamic between the two, i love how analytical matt/teo's mind worked when it came to racing. you could tell this was written with so, so much love for the sport, and it shows!!
Matt is being shafted by his racing team in favor of Robert, a poorer driver but their golden child. But they have a history before the bad blood, were close and lovers and became enemies when they couldn't be more than friends. I did enjoy this enemies to lovers though it does end a little undefined. There are future books in the series that might have more Matt and Robert in them. I received a copy of this through BookSirens and this is my voluntary opinion.
Matt & Robert were childhood friends. As grown ups they were both a part of a F 1 race team where they grew apart. Due to Robert's famous family roots, he became the team's golden child whereas Matt was treated unkindly & unknowingly being traded to a different team. Low angst, HEA. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Matt is heart-wrenchingly relatable to anyone who has never been the popular kid. Often overlooked, he spent his life clawing for a foothold, some way to rise above what’s handed to him. An amazing character in a sticky-sweet second chance romance
