About the author

I've wanted to be a children's book author as far back as I can remember. When I was eight years old I wrote a story about a rabbit. I am still writing stories about rabbits- and mice, cats, children, monsters, and dragons!

When I was growing up, I was the neighborhood storyteller. I would make up stories on the spot for younger children in the neighborhood. I read a lot of books. But I was also a bit of a tomboy. I spent much of my time outdoors, usually barefoot, climbing trees and stone-hopping across brooks.

On my way to becoming a children's book author, I was also a teacher and a children's librarian. I always liked story hours best. When my own children, Krista and Melissa, were small, I read to them constantly- stacks and stacks of books. I think I learned the most about writing from all that reading.

Today I live in Hamden, Connecticut, with my wonderfully encouraging and supportive husband, our two daughters, and our cat. We live in a white house with lots of flowers.

Just can't get into the "Mice" series, I'm afraid. There's nothing objectionable but the story is so clunky and random and the illustrations aren't particularly special, IMO.

A family of mice dressed in their fancy Easter garb are ready to enjoy a beautiful spring day hunting for colorful Easter eggs. But, one mouse gets a little sidetracked and spends his time sniffing flowers, playing in a mud puddle and splashing in a stream. When everyone gathers to count how many eggs they’ve found the playful mouse didn’t have a single egg. In a panic, he ran to find one and he did. It was a plain egg with a pleasant surprise inside. Can you guess what it could be?

Author Bethany Roberts has created a delightful Easter tale with lots of fun bouncing words. Illustrator Doug Cushman’s colorful illustrations are bright and cheery. Parents and teachers can discuss the Easter holiday, egg hunting and staying on task.

The illustrations were cute but there wasn't much of a story (four mice looking for Easter eggs), and the text and rhymes didn't flow very well.

It had very cute pictures, and the story had potential, but ultimately it didn't do much for me. The rhymes were spread out a bit too far for the Very Little Ones to follow (across page turns). I had thought maybe the story would focus on how much fun the smallest mouse had exploring, but no...it was all about the Easter egg hunt and who's found the most/biggest/best. Then he went back out exploring and found a non-Easter egg... (And then they end up kidnapping a baby turtle....?)

Anyhow, it was cute, but that's about it.

Another brilliant book for the very young, by Bethany Roberts, introduces children to Easter egg hunts, and to the innocent delights of discovering the springtime.

Listen to the following words, and then just imagine the gorgeously sprightly illustrations by Doug Cushman that adorn these pages. (He has imagined this art in a way that you may find totally satisfying. I sure did.)

I read this to my daughter’s class for Mystery Reader. The kids liked it but didn’t amaze them good book for preschoolers for Easter because of the short, rhyming text.

I've been looking for some cute books to read for Easter but this was not one I'll be reading again. It's a rhyming book but the rhyming words are on different pages so by the time we get to the rhyme, my 4-year old has already been talking about the pictures. For example, it starts out "Easter mice hop, hop,hop! Time for the egg hunt. Who will win?" Turn the page. "Easter mice jump, jump, jump! Ready, set, let's begin!".

This was a cute book where a family of mice went in search of Easter eggs but the youngest mouse is more interested in playing in the great outdoors...the mud, and just nature. But in the end he's sad because he doesn't have any Easter eggs he goes in search of one and does find one but in the effort of finding it he also finds a new friend.

While this one does require pre-reading in order to make sure the rhymes are emphasized, it's a cute story and one I would use again. The illustrations are super cute, and I love that the little girl mouse is wearing a pretty Easter hat. :)

In looking through my themed books this past week, it became very clear that I'm lacking in Easter related books. This was one of few I own, and to be honest, I don't have a recollection of adding it to my collection or sharing it previously. I read through it before setting it out, and I wasn't very impressed. It features a group of mice, and they're going on an Easter egg hunt. It was a popular topic this past week among my students, so I thought some may connect to the content. I chose not to read aloud any to my class, as this one just didn't have a strong story or overall positive message.
