When his beloved wife of forty years abruptly leaves him for a far younger man, fifty-eight-year-old Mark Etson attempts to pick up the pieces of his shattered life and move on. Wanting to reconnect with his siblings, from whom he has been long estranged, Mark travels to London for the Christmas holiday, but too much time has passed. He soon realizes that his dream of reconciliation with his family is just that--a dream. Unwilling to return home to Toronto, Mark moves on to Paris—a place he once planned to visit with a dear friend.
Twenty-six-year-old Ashley Wilkes came to Paris eight years before with a friend, intent on making a life for himself far from the family who disowned him. He soon learned, however, the high cost of living in a foreign capital. With no friend except the one he came with, Ashley was forced to make a life for himself the only way he could. Knowing that he can't go on this way forever, or even for much longer, Ashley plans his escape. When a chance encounter with a Canadian businessman offers him a means of making some quick cash, he jumps at the chance. It's only when he starts to care about Mark that things get complicated.
Publisher's Note: Something True is a male-male love story and contains homoerotic sex acts that may be offensive to some readers.
I enjoyed both of the MC's in this book. The age difference didn't matter to me, but something about this story just wasn't for me. The things that I did like about this one: the setting, both M/C's and how each person wasn't perfect. The things I didn't like: Mark is a doormat, the medical issues that were not resolved, and the ending just stopped without answering any of the loose ends in the book. Maybe there is a book 2 that I am not aware of? Who knows.
Contemporary M/M romance between a 58 year old rich executive dude and a young homeless American prostitute living in France. First off I don't see how the 26 year old Ashely Wilkes could have stayed in France for that many years legally. I lived in France for my grad school days and it was complicated to get anything more then a year stay and I was a privileged educated American which means that it was as easy as possible, so I don't see how Ashely wasn't kicked out after a year because every time he went to the doctor for his medications, he was taking a risk to being deported! Mark Etson is at a cross roads in his life at 58 because he is newly divorced and in Paris to grieve for his best friend's death and so many 'what if' moments in his life. It is almost Christmas when he has choices to make, like trying to get to know his abandoned siblings in London or going back to his nasty selfish ex-wife back in Canada. Ashley Wilkes awakens Mark to his true feelings as well as finding happiness for himself. So this isn't a gay-for-you story because Mark was probably always gay, but it takes extreme events to bring out the truth. I felt like the ending was a Happy for now because there are so many issues unresolved like illness and crazy families, but perhaps there will be a sequel? A good read, but traumatic to see how life is for homeless kids on the street. 140 pages and kindle freebie 3 stars
This story was a nice surprise I kept in my library for a little while, I was sad I didn't read it as soon as it was available. This story it's about a older man who denied himself happiness until he met a street twink who gave him what he needed. They spend their time touring places and making love, this is a story of greed, hope, faith and it's just Something New. I hope there is a book 2. Great job Wiselka.
