Dexter meets The Bourne Identity in a gritty thriller about the unkillable past, the first in a pulse-pounding new series from New York Times bestselling author Ellie Marney.

Simon Noone is a serial killer…but he doesn’t know it. Pulled from a river in Guatemala in 1982 with nothing—not even his memories—he returns to America five years later, looking for answers. He finds work at an NYC meatpacking plant and meets rebel ex-cop turned private investigator Nomi Pace. But she has problems all her own.

Nomi agrees to help Simon, if he lends his mysterious talents to solving a child kidnapping case. The two team up and make headway on both investigations, growing closer with every step. But when Nomi discovers the dark truth about Simon’s murderous past, he quickly turns from asset to liability.

Nomi contemplates her next move. Meanwhile, the weight of Simon’s deeds hangs like a dripping carcass on a meat hook. Were his homicidal urges erased along with his memory, or is there a sinister reason why his deft hand itches for the butcher’s cleaver?

This one had such an interesting premise, so I really wanted to love this. Unfortunately, I found it super slow and not thrilling like a thriller should be.

The premise which is a killer who has gotten amnesia and is trying to figure out who he is sounded so exciting. Even the first chapter made it seem like this was gonna be a wild book. However, the writing to me then became so bland and never really got better.

I want to write this in a way that doesn’t reveal spoilers, so I will say that even when certain thrilling parts were happening involving violent moments, I just still could not connect with this book or the characters. I think a big part of that was that Simon interested me, but Nomi did not at all. Since Nomi was such a big part of the book, I ended up losing interest.

I personally feel that this is a case where I think this could have been so good, but the idea was not executed properly.

Thank you to Amazon First Reads for this advance copy.

this was so much different than none shall sleep, but it was so good anyway!

only (minor) thing that was disappointing: i was really hoping for a mention of emma or travis and what they're up to, but maybe in the next book

simon is one of the most interesting characters ever. like in the none shall sleep series, there were so many moments where i went back and forth between liking him, and this book was definitely the same even though i liked him more here, and it was so interesting to see how different he couldve been compared to how he was ! + just being inside his head was sooo strange

First of all, I just want to say thank you to Ellie Marney and her team for sending me an ARC! I’m a big fan so it really means a lot.

Oh boy, where do I start. First of all, I had such a hard time putting this book down. I was super intrigued by Simon’s storyline about discovering his true identity, and when we did find it out it had a big impact on me (despite the fact that I should’ve seen it coming because…duh lol). I enjoyed Nomi as a main character - she’s tough, determined, and passionate about her job. There was, however, one aspect of her character that I didn’t particularly love nor see the necessity for to be honest. I’d check trigger warnings before reading.

I’d also recommend reading the None Shall Sleep trilogy first before reading this one, as it’ll provide a lot of context for Simon’s character. I do hope the next book is a little more action packed and an edge-of-your-seat kind of read, as this one felt more of like a “setup” for Simon’s new story.

Overall, I feel like the end set up the next book perfectly, and I’m curious to see Simon’s character development as he comes to terms with his “old” self.

I was so thrilled to receive my first-ever ARC and even more excited that it was No One Is Safe by Ellie Marney in exchange for my honest review.

The premise immediately hooked me: what happens when a sociopath loses his memory and forgets his past? It is an intriguing concept I have not come across before. The story opened with a glimpse into the future, which instantly built tension and made me want to keep turning the pages.

I did not find it quite as thrilling as Marney's None Shall Sleep series (which I highly recommend reading first if you can—it is not required to enjoy this book, but it adds rich context), but I thoroughly enjoyed the story.

I loved the characters, especially getting to see such a different side of Simon. Knowing what the "real" Simon is capable of from the None Shall Sleep series made his portrayal here even more compelling. It reminded me of the main character in Jack Heath's Timothy Blake series, another of my favourite thrillers. Also, Nomi's character is so fierce, and I am so excited to see how she continues to develop, especially her working relationship with Simon.

The entire story was gritty and tense, and it was definitely a page-turner that kept me engaged throughout. Overall, I really enjoyed this start to the series. It is a dark thriller with a unique hook, and I am eager to see where the story goes next in book two!

HAPPY RELEASE DAY !!!! 🥳

Thank you so much to the author for providing an advanced copy!! all opinions are my own.

This book was so crazy and captivating! The None Shall Sleep series is hands down one of my favorite series of all time and Simon is one of my favorite parts of those books, so when I found out we were getting a SIMON BOOK? Yeah, I am sat!

No One is Safe was so gripping and thrilling and the last 20% had me holding on for dear life. This is an adult thriller but it is done masterfully and not overly graphic which I appreciated.

The addition of Nomi in this book was one of the best parts -- she mimics Emma in the way that she is smart, fierce and wildly independent (and also has many of her own demons). She can hold her own and I think she is a perfect match for Simon. She and Simon had so much sexual tension and chemistry and his attachment to her was one of my favorite parts of this book.

And Simon - oh, Simon. I adore him so much and he is so near and dear to my heart (I don't even want to psychologically dive into why I love him so much just leave me alone okay) and it was fascinating to FINALLY be able to see inside his head. He still freaks me out a little bit, but he is such an entertaining character to follow and I love that we got to see his true motivations and him try to reconcile the man he was before his "accident" and the man he is trying to become after it.. I am a sucker for a redemption arc and I thought that Marney did a great job keeping all of the parts of Simon we love best while also making me fall in love with this new (and improved) version of him.

The ending had me a little scared, I'm not gonna lie, but I loved the way it wrapped up and hope that this leads to a new series with Simon and Nomi!

4.75 / 5 (please GR give me .5 and .75 stars I'm begging)
ESP (English Below)

ENG
No One Is Safe is a thriller set in 1980s NYC. We follow Simon, a serial killer with amnesia; he doesn't remember who he is or the crimes he committed. Together with Nomi Pace, a private investigator with a dark past, not only will he reconstruct his identity, but also discover a very dark side of himself that makes him rethink what he is capable of.

This book was an emotional slap in the face, in the best possible way. I already knew Simon from the None Shall Sleep trilogy, and in this book, we see another side, another interpretation of the character, which completely captivated me.

What I loved about this book, and didn't expect, is that it not only presents us with a case to solve but also raises some questions: What would happen if a killer lost all memories of their crimes? Can a sociopath change if they don't remember who they are? Is empathy something we are born with or something we learn? The central focus of the story isn't just the investigation, but the relationship between Simon and Nomi. I found this new character a welcome addition to the world and a complex and wonderful character, as is typical of Marney's female characters. She's strong, but not invincible, intelligent, but not a know-it-all. She makes mistakes and fails time and time again, yet she perseveres and always does the best she can in her situation. Although I mentioned a "relationship" between Simon and Nomi (and there were definitely some sparks flying from time to time), romance isn't the main focus. These characters are just getting to know each other under very particular circumstances, which don't allow for a sudden, abrupt "Shall we go on a date?" I can see a hint of romance, but it's more of a seed for something else to bloom.
At times, the investigation felt a bit long, but everything makes sense and becomes relevant by the end of the plot. Another thing I want to highlight is the level of detail. It's clear the author researched the situation in NYC, and I'm also glad to see that the city's diversity and the role the LGBTQ+ community played during that time aren't ignored.

Is it necessary to read None Shall Sleep to understand this book? Honestly, no. It's one of those cases where if you've read the trilogy (which I highly recommend), you'll notice certain things and understand certain references. However, if you haven't read the trilogy, this book stands on its own. What I do recommend is reading None Shall Sleep to get a deeper understanding of our protagonist and fully grasp the skills he possesses and what he's capable of.
I was definitely left wanting to know more and to see where Ellie will take us with these new characters.

Thanks again to Ellie and Thomas & Marcer for giving me a copy of the book in exchange for an honest opinion.

I really wanted this to hit… and it just didn’t.

The premise? So good. A killer with amnesia trying to figure out who he is? I was immediately in. I thought this was going to be dark, twisty, can’t-put-it-down energy.

But it moved so slow.

Even when things were technically “happening,” it never felt thrilling. I kept waiting for that moment where it would hook me and take off, and it just… never did. The writing felt kind of flat, and I couldn’t connect to most of the characters.

Simon had my attention at times, but Nomi being such a big part of the story made it hard for me to stay invested. I just didn’t care enough, and that’s the worst feeling in a thriller.

This is one of those books where the idea had so much potential, but the execution didn’t deliver.

Not terrible, just… disappointing.

No One is Safe (Noone Thriller)

~Ellie Marney

At the end of No One is Safe by Ellie Marney, I discovered my new fav psychological thriller good bad guy (yes, I'm calling him a good bad guy) has actually been around a while. What the what? So now that I've found this version of him, I will be on the search for the previous series before I continue on with the Noone Thriller's. With that said, you can totally read this as a stand-alone, not knowing a thing about the main character.

No One is Safe is one of those gritty, relentless, and disturbingly plausible stories where danger hides in plain sight. It makes your pulse race and survival depends on who you can trust – if anyone.

For the last five years, Simon Noone has lived in Guatemala, working alongside the doctor who saved his life. But the unanswered question of who he really is—the man buried beneath the amnesia - drives him back to the United States. Now in New York City, Simon begins searching for fragments of his past. That’s when he meets Nomi, the sharp, quick-witted private investigator who lives in the apartment below.

When Nomi enlists Simon’s help on a case, the two realize their skills complement each other - and that their goals might overlap. She’s desperate to find a missing eight-year-old girl, while Simon is chasing the lost years of his own life. As their investigation deepens, they’re pulled into a dangerous world of lies, deception, mafia ties, and murder. But when Nomi uncovers a truth she can’t bring herself to share, their fragile partnership teeters on the edge. Is she protecting Simon, or hiding something that could destroy them both?

Marney’s strength has always been her balance of emotion and intensity. Simon Noone – mysterious, reserved, yet relatable. Nomi Pace – resourceful, guarded, yet caring. Their chemistry doesn’t rely on overblown tension; it’s a slow burn built from respect, necessity, and shared trauma. And while this isn’t a story about romance, their bond humanizes the horror, reminding readers that even in the darkest moments, connection matters.

The pacing is masterful - fast and sharp when it needs to be, deliberate when the story requires space to breathe. Marney’s prose is cinematic without ever losing its grit; readers feel the pulse of every chase, the quiet dread of every discovery. She writes with the confidence of a storyteller who understands tension isn’t created by explosions, but by the silence before one.

What sets No One Is Safe apart from the typical psychological thriller is its emotional weight. Amid the carnage and twists is an aching undercurrent of humanity - grief, guilt, and the thin line between what feels right and justice. It’s haunting because it feels so real; these characters bleed, break, and keep going anyway.

As always, all opinions and reviews are of my own volition. I have not been promised any compensation, current or future, by the author or publisher for a fair and honest review.

Jason Bourne and Dexter…

This a Kindle First Read choice from monthly offerings, one of perks of Amazon Prime. It is well worth the read. In fact, do not hesitate for this early read option unavailable to others until March. If you chose another selection, you can still choose this one at nominal cost as an Amazon Prime member.

This is and/or should be a kick off for a series because each of these characters is a gem, unique, unexpected, undefinable.

One of the characters was on police force, partnered with another female, who remains a best friend even after her partner left the force to pursue detective work. She is a detective who takes those cases most others would reject. Developing a reputation within her Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, she is trusted and respected enough to freely navigate her residential area without fear. Within her apartment complex, she has developed relationships until newest boarder emerges.

He resides one floor above her, works at a meat plant butchering shop, and suffers from amnesia. He seeks her help in confirming his identity after he has returned to the US from Guatemala having been repaired by a missionary physician. Having created a notebook about what he knows about himself, he entrusts this PI with his personal info as he assists her in locating a young six year old taken from her mother, used as manipulation to control this single mother, a mother authorities would deem unfit if contacted and an agency that would rescue a child only to relocate a rescued child into foster care.

The distrust, suspicion, and fear between the two who do begin to collaborate is matched by interest, curiosity, and fascination. The relationship morphs into a mutual respect, but remains tenuous in full trust. As the two are placed in perilous situations, each learns more about each other as well as more about themselves.

Each character is flawed, but the amnesiac has flaws inconceivable, that shock each of them creating yet another doubt and uncertainty threatening their collaboration.

Simon NoOne has potential because of his newly formed relationship with a woman with remarkable survivor skills, creative improvisation, and incredible insight. Well worth a read. Anticipate a follow up I would dive into with relish.

Happy Publication Eve to the brand new thriller from Aussie New York Times bestselling author Ellie Marney. No One Is Safe is a fast paced, gritty crime thriller with morally grey characters who I could not help but get behind. Ellie drew me into the 1980’s NYC setting with her vivid storytelling and I was throughly consumed by the tale.

Simon Noone was pulled from a Guetamalan river in 1982 with a gunshot wound to the head and absolutely no memory of his life before. Five years later, he arrives in NYC looking for answers. Working at a meatpacking plant and living in a dodgy apartment building he meets ex-cop turned private investigator Nomi Pace. Nomi is currently investigating a missing child and agrees to help Simon if he will lend his mysterious talents to her case. However, when Nomi discovers the truth about his grisly past she is torn. Is he still a cold blooded killer or has he changed with the loss of his memories?

What a thrill-ride of a read. Readers of Ellie’s YA thriller series will recognise Simon, but this book can easily be read as a standalone. The suspense and tension of this story is added to by the dark and dirty setting of NYC’s Meatpacking district which seems to harbour all manner of unsavoury characters and their secrets.

I loved getting to know Nomi, who has her own challenges to contend with including why she had to leave the police force. I loved her distrustful but determined nature. She would do anything to save others even at great personal risk. These traits really endeared her to me. Even Simon, who has his share of scary characteristics was someone I could support in this story. He’s very real in that no-one is all bad or all good, but a mixture of both. This contrasting light and shade made for incredibly gripping reading.

If you are a lover of dark and gruesome thrillers or you love that touch of horror in your reads then I urge you to read No One Is Safe. You are sure to love it.

Huge thanks to Ellie Marney for sending me an early copy of this brilliant read. I cannot wait for more readers to get their hands on it and I have my fingers crossed for more from this dubious duo.

No One Is Safe - Ellie Marney
Pub Date - 3/1/26; Brilliance Audio
Rating - ☕️☕️☕️.5/5 rounded to 4
Thoughts - Thank you to Netgalley, the author, and Brilliance Audio for this gifted advanced listener copy in exchange for my honest review. The premise of this story is so unique - a serial killer in the 1980s ends up with amnesia remembering nothing about his previous life and works with a PI help him find out his identity. The PI is currently also working on a case of a missing 8 year old girl and uses Simon's skills to find her and return her to her family.

I enjoyed the audiobook and I felt like it added to the overall atmosphere and suspense building of the book. The reader and characters are constantly guessing to see if SImon is going to snap back into his old ways in this gritting, dark story.

This book makes me feel conflicted. On one hand, it was really fun to be in Simon's head and explore him as the protagonist of a thriller, but on the other hand, I feel like the storyline has gotten so far away from the original intent of None Shall Sleep, and we've dove headfirst into the glamorization of serial killers. On its own, the novel was fun and I'm excited to read more, but I feel like I have to consider None Shall Sleep and the No One Is Safe as two different universes.

DNF - 50% of the way in and the most interesting part of the book was the flash forward in the first chapter. 50% of the way in and both me and the main character have no idea who he was in a past life (if I conveniently forget reading the synopsis). Entirely too slow for a thriller.

⭐️⭐️ (2/5)
No One Is Safe by Ellie Marney had a premise that immediately hooked me: an amnesiac man slowly discovering he may have been a serial killer? Yes please. That’s the kind of morally messy thriller I normally devour.

Unfortunately… the execution just didn’t match the intrigue. 🥱

The pacing is painfully slow, and what should feel tense and unsettling instead feels dragged out. I kept waiting for the story to really grab me—to lean into the psychological tension or the danger—but it never quite got there. The investigation plods along and the momentum just never builds.

Simon is an interesting concept for a character, but I struggled to feel invested in him or the story overall. Instead of being chilling or thought-provoking, large portions felt flat and repetitive.

It’s frustrating because the bones of a great thriller are here: identity, morality, and the idea of a monster trying to decide what to do with his second chance. But for me, the storytelling just moved too slowly to keep the suspense alive.

A compelling idea that unfortunately didn’t hold my attention. 📚

Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher, and author for the ARC and chance to give my honest opinion.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
No One Is Safe by Ellie Marney was such an engaging and fast-paced thriller. This was an easy five-star read for me.

The amnesia trope was done incredibly well, adding layers of mystery and tension as the story slowly revealed what really happened. I loved piecing things together along with the characters as the truth began to unfold.

The reveal surrounding Simon was honestly one of the biggest surprises in the book. That moment completely caught me off guard and added so much depth to his character. What made it even better was seeing how he was able to grow and become more than the person people expected him to be.

I also really loved Nomi as the female lead. She was strong, resilient, and incredibly determined. Even while dealing with the trauma she carried, she remained focused and capable. She definitely gave off boss female lead energy, which made her such a compelling character to follow.

Between the twists, strong character development, and suspenseful pacing, this was a thriller that kept me hooked from beginning to end.

So excited I got to read this before the official release next month, yay Amazon first reads!
I am obsessed with this series!
I love the characters, and the premise of this one is awesome. As always, I'm amazed at Ellie's ability to describe real places and era with incredible detail, the research that must have gone into this is crazy.
The setting was so cool too, I loved spending a bit of time in grimy 80s NYC, with the queer clubs etc, so fun.
I know there are more books in the works and I can't wait!

None Shall Sleep first introduced us to teenage, serial killer Simon. No One Is Safe shows us a Simon pulled from a river in Guatemala with a gun shot wound, no identification, and no memory. Heading to the U.S. to try and find answers, this version of Simon seems bland. The problem is the reader knows Simon from the previous books where we get the dangerous yet charismatic version of him. It might have been better if we were not already familiar with the more exciting version. We get very few glimpses of that character.

We needed more Dexter and less Private Investigator, Simon.

Thank you to the publisher for the gifted eARC.

The story behind Simon was intriguing - a man who has no memory of his life prior to being found in Guatemala with a bullet to his head coming to NYC to figure out who he was before. He becomes wrapped up in a neighbor's work, she's a ex-cop turned private detective. I liked getting to know the characters - Simon and Nomi - but there were aspects of Nomi's personality that were never fully explained. The plot has some twists and turns and is a bit slow at times. There were also some gory scenes in the story that I would have preferred to be toned down a little. Overall, this book kept my interest so I'll probably read the precursor books about Simon before his accident.

Hmm I was really interested in this one once I read the synopsis - a serial killer with amnesia/Dexter meets The Bourne Identity.

Def a slow burn, fell a little flat. It didn’t feel like a true thriller more of a mystery with some intense scenes. I wish there was more of excitement/suspense. The audiobook was fine, I liked the narrators for Simon and Nomi.

I really enjoyed No One Is Safe. The story pulled me in quickly and kept me hooked the entire time. The suspense builds steadily, making it hard to put down because you always want to know what happens next. The characters feel realistic and the tension keeps you guessing. If you enjoy fast-paced thrillers with lots of suspense, this is definitely a great read.

I don't always have big expectations for these freebies but I liked this one. Unique and intriguing plot, albeit, far fetched. I liked the main characters. A fast paced fun read.

Interesting Read

I thought the book overall was decent. I like enough that I will read the 2nd book. The character building was good.
