This episode lost a lot of made book one special. It has devolved into a standard progression fantasy with an over-powered protagonist. I do like the enemy they are battling, it had the potential to be a real threat to society. If only the gods hadn't given our heroes a get-out-of-jail card in the form of cleric detection powers.
Holy shit. What a change from book 1 to book 2. A sharp disappointment after the high I was riding from book 1.
First off, everyone introduced in this book absolutely fucking sucks. Aria, Giller, Pervil, Nelspir - every new character brings nothing but frustration and anger to the narrative. Even Jensen is more of an asshole this time, and I would say Torwin would have been fun if not for the fact he is gone for most of the book. Who are these characters!? Why would we want to read about any of them? They all suck!
The whole world sucks! I was excited to see him encounter the guild and the world and everything fucking sucks. Even the MC constantly complains about being dragged along with everything and wishing he would go off and do his own thing. Why would you write this? We all agree with the MC but we're going along with this fucking shit anyways?
Seriously, every character sucks whether they've been corrupted or not. They're not better even after they've been saved. Is the shittiness of the guild some sort of trope subversion? Ugh. Utterly ridiculous.
And don't get me started on his True Form. What is this, middle school? Why do writers in this genre think wolf forms are cool?
It's like this book was written to actively piss me off, I almost commend the author for it. My god.
3.7/5 The first book was pretty great, and ended with Velik heading to society, which I was excited for, hoping he would meet people who liked him and vice versa and go on fun adventures with them. But everyone sucks, the only people in this book who seem to actually kind of like Velik are is the old archer from the first book and the druid girl. Everyone else acts like Velik is some huge asshole, when really he just keeps to himself, and doesn't have the best manners. It kinda wares on Velik and you the reader when he's just trying his best to stop a disaster and everyone still treats him like shit.
D.E. Sherman has a way with words that resonates deeply within your soul. The fact that his books focus on boys as heroes is rare in this politically correct society. As a mother to a teenage boy, I love his passion for creating worlds where boys can escape and feel accepted.
His dedication to his writing is astounding, and he deserves greater recognition for the exceptional quality of his work. I do hope his series will be turned into a reality, and I would love to see his work on the big screen. Continue writing with passion and using your incredible imagination to create a safe space for all teenage boys to reaffirm that it is okay to be who they are.
The story line is engaging. However, it needs balance. Some good mixed with bad. 90% of this book is about fighting horrors. The extroverts would love this storyline. The introverts, not so much. I am the latter. I could not immerse myself in this book. But this book is well written, the story flows, the story well thought out . That is why I rated it five stars. But as I said, it needs balance.
What a great book. The mc did not magically become sociable and the author did a great job and stayed true to his character. The worn out trope of an academy setting was skipped. Good action. Good adventure. A bit chaotic and on the short side for length, however my expectations were exceeded with this second offering. Good job.
The first book in the series was much better. This book was much worse. The MC has become thoroughly unlikeable. He dislikes everyone, is incapable of normal conversation, but simultaneously allows himself to be manipulated and bullied over and over again. The book became less and less enjoyable.
These are well-written, but does everyone have to be quite such an unrepentant knobhead? If anything Velik has become even less likeable since the first book, not that you can really blame him as all the other characters are total jerks. It kind of takes the fun out of things, though. Give him a romantic partner; a friend; a pet monkey; anything!
This was a very enjoyable reading experience. The main character is unique in his consistent approach to interacting with the other characters in the story. The high level of action makes this series even more engaging. Looking forward to the next book in this series.
I did enjoy the first book a lot, but from time to time I found the MC difficult to enjoy as a MC, but I guess that’s part of the trade off for his power. It was well written just something personal about protagonists. Anyways I was bringing it up because I find the MC growing on me more in Book 2. I think it’s well written. Looking forward to the next book
Growing up ostracized certai ly explains his anti social behavior but he's still an unpleasant person. Aside from that, his obvious linguistic skills and general competence around civilization makes his solitary upbringing less believable, which is my only ding against the story.
Well written with solid characters and a clear plot. The whole "most of the guild is filled with assholes" thing got a little tiring if only because who wants to read a book where the MC is just constantly unjustly harangued.
will continue, but will wait for book three on KU I think.
Read this book. I’m writing this review since the author said it’s beneficial in his book end notes. It’s definitely worth my time to do it, and for you to give it a try.
Love the non-linear storyline that keeps you guessing.
Devoured this book in just a few days. Addictive pacing, well developed characters and a story line that keeps you guessing and engaged. Can’t wait for the next one!
This was a great second book. The story developed in interesting ways with some good plot twists here and there. I wonder about the character development aspect though. There wasn't much in this book but I still really enjoyed it. Definitely recommend
This book has lots action and fight scenes. Great characters. I like that the main character is a dick. He tries not to be but just can’t help himself. Looking forward to the next book!!
The first book had a lot of detailed fights that went on and on. This one was more concise with them and at the same time much more interesting story wise.
Second book is even better than the first. The characters are all strong but flawed and act consistently. The magic system makes sense. The action is top notch. Can’t wait for book 3!
Loved this book . It's a very solid continuation , loved the progression of the M main character and the development of the plot is on point. The characters overall are interesting . OVER ALL highly recommend
Really enjoyed the second book in the series and cannot wait for the third book. Really like how everything is not "fixed" with the guild. It just shows how this book is more "real" and not pure fantasy.
This series continues to be well-paced, with a taciturn but relatable MC. I like the style and the characters, and book 2 broadens Velik's horizons, but mostly to show him that the problems from the first book are bigger than everyone had thought. He also discovers a hate for bureaucracy and self-centered jerks, something I'm sure many of us can identify with. Evidently this is to be a trilogy, so now to see how this one wraps up.
This story of a guy getting his class and race from a dungeon seed was a very interesting entertaining read. He’s hated and used to living by himself in the wilds. Great Read
