I was disappointed with A Good Rake is Hard to Find, the first book in the series, but I really enjoyed this one with its engaging characters, charming romance and intriguing mystery elements.

Jasper has all the traits I look for in a hero… honourable, charming, kind and patient. I love how he champions Hermione and is so protective towards her. He admires her spirit and sharp wit and I like that he has no desire to change her. I think these words reveal the sort of man he is.

“I realize that your life with your father has been somewhat…difficult at times. But you should never worry about angering me or upsetting me. I will always listen to with an open mind.”

Hermione is outspoken, headstrong and determined and, as a keen driving enthusiast, she is considered unfashionable. She is a mixture of strength and vulnerability which made her a very sympathetic character. Her father, Lord Upperton, is a compulsive gambler and Hermione realises that he loves cards more than he loves her. Only a really, corrupt and heartless man would threaten to auction off his own daughter. It’s not surprising she has concerns about Jasper, someone she sees as a gambler just like her father (Jasper’s reasons for gambling are very different from her father’s as revealed later in the story).

I enjoyed seeing their relationship blossom slowly from friendship to affection and finally to love. It was refreshing to see a couple who, although married under less than ideal circumstances, really want their marriage to work and are open and honest with each other.

The conversation they have about what happens in the marriage bed is certainly one of the most unusual ones I’ve read!

“I admit,” she said with a smile, “my knowledge about the process is a bit limited. I have seen horses of course, but as they have hooves there was no question of the lady horse touching the stallion’s …” She made a hand gesture meant to indicate the missing word.
“Quite,” he said with a wince at the absurdity of this conversation.

I liked how Hermione’s boldness extends to the bedroom but also how Jasper shows such consideration and gentleness.

Jasper really proved a true hero when he stands up to his mother on Hermione’s behalf but Hermione proves herself more than capable of holding her own against the over-bearing Lady Mainwaring. At first, I thoroughly disliked Jasper’s scheming mother, but I came to understand and sympathise with her when she confides in Hermione the reasons for the conflict with her son. It was lovely to see a genuine friendship forged between Lady Mainwaring and Hermione and reconciliation between mother and son.

Why did it feel as if this case were becoming more complex not less.

Yes, there are lots of twists and turns before the mystery surrounding the theft of Hermione’s horses is resolved but I never felt that the mystery element eclipsed the romance.

If I were asked to choose my favourite romantic moment, it would be this…

“Just know that I don’t want you to change. Or rather, I don’t expect you to. It isn’t a requirement for my happiness.”
“You are a wonderful man, “she said, kissing him back. “My father couldn’t have chosen better.”

MY VERDICT: This was a very enjoyable read and Jasper and Hermione were a delightful couple.

Summary
Lady Hermione Upperton has had to deal with the consequences of her gambler of a father. She meets Jasper Fawley, the Earl of Mainwaring through friends and by being the first woman to join the gentleman's riding club Lords of Anarchy. She and Jasper develop a friendship of sorts when dealing with each other. But she is shocked to learn that her father has gambled away her precious horses that she purchased with her own funds. The man who received her horses, isn't a man you want to cross....someone that has been seeking her horses and is suspected of being involved in horse thefts. Jasper, is feeling protective of Hermione, especially when she cross paths with two of the men involved in crimes against the crown and her life could be in danger if she crosses them. What he didn't expect in a game with Hermione's foolish father, was for him to gamble his daughter to him in marriage. He can just imagine how furious she will be when she learns the truth, but they soon realize that Jasper is one of the best prospects for Hermione...knowing it would be a matter of time before her father gambled her away on a card game. But soon their enemy and someone they didn't suspect may destroy them both.
The Hero
Jasper, the Earl of Mainwaring, is of the Aristocracy. He grew up most of his life without a father, who died in a accident. Ever since he has felt uneasy driving curricles anywhere unless he has to. Along with his titled responsibilities, he helps with aiding his government with certain enemies. His latest orders are to get to the bottom of the horse thieves and get proof against them. But there is one slight problem...the woman that is on their radar is also the same woman he feels a strong connection to and will protect even though they have only a fragile friendship. Jasper finds Hermione entertaining and he respects her spirited nature. Jasper is quite the delctable hero. He isn't perfect, he struggles with fears of the past but has great strength of character.
The Heroine
Lady Hermione Upperton is quite passionate especially when it comes to riding. She has always loved riding and has worked hard to get into the Lords of Anarchy riding club. She doesn't back down from any challenge. Hermione lost her mother when she was young, but she still remembers her in moments. Her relationship with her father is vastly different. Her father has a sickness to gambling, and can't ever give it up. Hermione has had to deal with losing much over the years due to his weakness. But when she loses her prized horses which she paid for with her own funds she is furious with her father. But her father doesn't understand that he has done anything wrong. When he strokes the final straw on the camel's back when he barters her away in marriage to Jasper, she knows its the only choice she has. Especially when she is the prime suspect in a murder. But she realizes that she will be protected by Jasper and no longer be under her father's thumb. Hermione was quite fun and unique, and although she did have some modern like qualities...she still had some characteristics of the time. I liked seeing certain depths to her character become revealed.
Plot and Story Line
In Good Earl Gone Bad  we see a story that I have been very eager to read. Manda Collins is a fun author that writes lighthearted romance with a bit of depth and unique elements she brings to her stories. In Good Earl Gone Bad  we see something creative. I loved the various elements that in the beginning, I wasn't sure how they would all fit together, but ending up with a great flow and as certain truths are revealed we see how different paths these characters are led on, they are brought together. This aspect of the story was quite enjoyable to see it all unfold.

Another great aspect we see is the conflict of the enemies and other characters that end up bringing Jasper and Hermione together. I love a great mystery with great villains that boy they cause some great tension for the story that I loved. I love some good enemies....and a villain you don't see in the end. Manda Collins wrote a whopper in this, I was delightfully surprised in certain aspects that become unveiled in the end. We also see the influence of poor choices and a bad addiction to gambling can bring about positive results you don't see at first.

The romance that develops between Jasper and Hermione starts as a friendship and develops into more. I really enjoyed seeing this trope---I love seeing the change from friends to lovers and I felt that Collins handles this pretty well. I liked how well these two do together, even from the beginning when they don't necessarily like each other, we see the chemistry that they have. I will admit though...I didn't always feel able to connect to them, especially when it came to the romance between them. I was perfect fine with the friendship, but at times it seemed difficult at times when their relationship changed.

I also loved seeing some of the secondary characters, the friends of Jasper and Hermione. Their bantering and unique personalities added a bit of a different atmosphere that I thoroughly enjoyed seeing. It makes me excited for the third book here.
The Cover
I adore this cover...such a great romantic pose we have here. I love the mix of blue and red.

Although this wasn't terribly exciting, I really like Manda Collins' gentle, sweet, humorous voice and her very likable lead characters. For that reason I would still give it four stars. It's just the thing if you want a pleasant Regency romance that has characters you would enjoy being around in real life.

Hermione, our heroine is the first female to join the all male Lords of Anarchy driving club. We open with her Father gambling away her precious horses (that she bought with her money)to Lord Saintcrow. Hermione is heartbroken and tries to get her horses back.

Our hero,Jasper Fawley, the Earl of Mainwaring is also part of the Lords of Anarchy. He and Hermione seemed to have some pull or attraction that each ignored. But Jasper witnesses Hermione Father gambling away her horses and doesn't approve and tries to help get her horses back. But her Father takes it a step further and then gambles away Hermione and Jasper steps in winning her hand in marriage. He is realizing she's better off with him then her Father. In the process of all this Lord Saintcrow, who won her horses is murdered and Hermione is the suspect.

We have a romance that blooms between the two as they solve a murder and mystery.

A well written book that held my interest pretty much throughout the story but be warned it is a slow start the first few chapters. I liked that the hero and heroine didn't necessarily fit the "ton" mold. We had good chemistry between the two and a well developed relationship that evolved.

I think I don't like this author's writing style very much. It's rather bland, an unemotional business which leaves me hanging. This leads to me being unconnected to the characters and not really involved in the whole story.

3.5 stars. Overall this was a good, enjoyable read; the main characters were very likable and I liked their close friends as supporting characters. It's one of those books that won't be a reread, but I don't consider the time I spent reading it wasted.

Summary. As so often occurs in romance books, the person who wrote the summary didn't read the book (or didn't pay attention very carefully). Lady Hermione Upperton's one love is driving her curicle and she has recently joined the Lords of Anarchy driving club as its first female member. When her gambling wastrel of a father loses her lovely new matched greys in a game of cards, she is determined to get them back. Jasper Fawley, the Earl of Mainwaring, is a well-respected member of the ton and though he was at first against the idea of Hermione joining such a club, he has come to admire her spirit and drive (pun intended), and wants to do what he can to help her get her horses back. They've known each other for a relatively short period of time (I believe since the beginning of the first book, so could be several months, but hasn't been years), and though they used to butt heads, each has started to view the other in a different light and an attraction between them has begun to simmer. Things appear to be more complicated than just a set of horses lost in a game of cards though, and soon they're dealing with a murder, a set of horse thieves, mysterious neighbors, and etc.

Oh, and early on, when Jasper goes to confront Hermione's father about the horses, he ends up wagering her father for Hermione's hand in marriage. He offers the wager and is the one to bring up Hermione, not her father, though the back cover summary and all but one subsequent references in the story seem to forget that. (Now that I think about it, I wonder if that part was rewritten and they forget to change the other parts accordingly?)

Praise. Hermione was a fun heroine; she's unusual, doesn't have the normal "ladylike" interests that women her age and class do, and she's a tough cookie. Her mother died when she was 8 and it's been only her and her father since, and he's basically lost all their money and any property that's not entailed. She deals with the situation as she must though and wears a brave face. I also liked Jasper, who was a sweet and decent guy. He's apparently a math whiz and can count cards, so his favorite hobby is also playing cards, but he's by no means a gambling addict. His father died when he was a young boy, so he inherited the title early, and has quite a tense relationship with his mother (he also has two sisters he takes care of, but we barely see them).

I enjoyed the back and forth between Hermione and Jasper, as well as their interactions with their respective trio of friends. (And wouldn't you know it! Three guy friends, three girl friends—how convenient if their One True Love just happens to be within that group and then you have 3 couples made up of best friends!). The chemistry was also good and I definitely felt the connection between Hermione and Jasper. One sees how he comes to appreciate Hermione for who she is and for the very fact that she is so different; I only wish we had seen a little more of him with his previously stuffy opinions in the beginning, because that would have provided a greater contrast.

Criticism. The plot wasn't great. The whole thing is driven by the mystery subplot which really stretches the imagination. Jasper has done work for the War Office and they call him in to investigate the horse thieves because why? Oh, yeah, that money is going to people who want to topple the government (? what?). That connection is never referenced again, since its sole purpose was to justify bringing Jasper into this investigation that ends up involving Hermione. And even when it's all tied up at the end, I'm frankly still a little unclear on who was doing what why—I remember this last, but that "why" is so ridiculous, as is the idea that that is what sets off this whole other chain of events.

Even though I liked the main characters and their romance, sometimes it was a little ... boring. I think the main source of that reaction is the fact that we don't see much evolution of their feelings for one another. Already at the beginning they've started to change their minds about one another, and at the end they love each other and can't live without one another. I'm kind of going to contradict myself here, but also the book takes place within the timeframe of a week, probably (maybe two, but no more), and that they're so deeply in love with one another at the end? I don't really buy it. "But Juliana, you just complained that they started off already kind of liking each other!" I know, I know—so I guess the learning here is that I don't usually like books that span a short timeframe.

I think my feelings about the book would have been completely different had the main focus been their relationship. The mystery subplot was badly done and ended up just being used as excuses for certain things to occur; if instead we had focused completely on the main characters and seen more of their relationship develop, I think it would have been much more satisfying. For example, there were some great dynamics that could have been explored with the now-Dowager Countess; Jasper's relationship with her is very complex and interesting, though she comes off as over-the-top and extreme at the beginning, but her role and her relationship with Jasper and Hermione could have been another added dimension. The ingredients were there, essentially, I just wasn't completely satisfied with the final meal.

Basics.
Our Heroine: Lady Hermione Upperton (age unknown)
Our Hero: Jasper Fawley, Earl of Mainwaring (age unknown)
Setting: London, England (year unknown)
Timeframe covered: 1-2 weeks

Series. This is Book 2 in the Lords of Anarchy series, but not having read the first book didn't prevent my enjoyment of this one. I do wonder if maybe there was more conflict between Hermione and Jasper there, that may have helped differentiate the time when he disapproved of her versus when he came to respect her, since that first part basically isn't present in this book and is more just referenced as being his previous point of view. I'm looking forward to Ophelia's story, which comes out April 2016.
Book 1—A Good Rake is Hard to Find, Leonora and Frederick
Book 2—Good Earl Gone Bad, Hermione and Jasper
Book 3—Good Dukes Wear Black, Ophelia and Piers

Excerpt.
As if she sensed his gaze, she lifted her lids and locked eyes with him. "Why did you accept his wager?" she asked softly.

Unable to look away, he stepped into her, liking the way she held her own with him. "The truth is, I was afraid he'd lose you to someone else," he admitted. "And I couldn't have endured knowing you belonged to anyone else."

Her eyes widened in surprise, and unable to stop himself, Jasper covered her mouth with his.

Bottom Line. Enjoyable read; get it from the library or borrow it from a friend.

** I received an eARC of this book from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review **

Unlike the first book in the series (which I liked but didn't love) I LOVED this book. Not exactly sure the title accurate - because there is nothing gone bad about the Earl!

First of all - the hero is named Jasper. I thought that was awesome. I can't remember the last time I read a hero named Jasper. Lately I have been overwhelmed by Luciens, Gabriels, Jacks and the like. It was truly a refreshing change.

Second the hero is not a man-ho, experienced? Yes. Slept with half the ton? No! Thank you Manda Collins. I love a rake - but like all good things - sometimes you OD on it and need a break.

Ok, on to the heroine, Hermione. I really liked her, she is determined to drive and has finally been accepted into the Lords of Anarchy driving club, as the first (and only) female member. She has just arrived at her first club event when her horses are repossessed by a man claiming to have won them from her father the night before. Jasper steps in to lend his support to her. She bought the horses with her own money and can't believe her father offered them in a card game. She is devastated and grateful that Jasper stepped in to defuse what could have been a very embarrassing situation.

Jasper knew that her father lost the horses and was outraged on Hermione's behalf. While he has been vocal in the past about women belonging to driving clubs, he does respect her abilities and has his own personal reasons for his aversions.

Later Hermione decides to confront Lord Saintcrow and try to get him to return her horses. She and her friends arrive at his home only to find he has been murdered. As they turn to leave, Jasper arrives - again he saves the day and again he has his own reasons for being there.

Jasper later confronts Hermione's father and ends up winning her hand in marriage. Even though he had no intention of marrying, he decides that Hermione would be better off with him than with her father.

Hermione is less than thrilled to learn her father has lost her in a card game and is determined not to marry. However when it becomes obvious that she is suspected of murdering Saintcrow - she agrees that marriage to Jasper would be a better alternative to staying with her father.

From here our unlikely duo start to fall in love and they work together to solve the murder and the mystery of why Hermione's horses are worth killing over.

I truly enjoyed this book and was sorry to see it end. It had a decent whodunnit, some very steamy love scenes and a believable romance. I would definitely recommend this book - it could be a stand alone, but I would recommend reading the the prior book (a Good Rake is Hard to Find) first to get the maximum enjoyment from this book.

Manda Collins is rapidly becoming one of my favourite historical romance authors. She creates stories that have great characters, interesting mysteries and great love scenes.
This is the second book in the Lords of Anarchy series. As with the first book, the witty dialogue is back in full force. Hermione is a strong character and she isn’t a wallflower. In fact, she is the first female invited to join the driving club, The Lords of Anarchy. With her group of friends, she is pulled into a series of events that rapidly change her life. Manda Collins takes her characters through events that challenge their emotions and ideals. She brilliantly weaves intrigue and suspense into mysterious events. With a less skilled author, it would just be event after event – almost like the characters jumping through hoops. But the author uses the conflict to peel away a layer from the characters, letting the reader in to their minds and hearts.
I adored the characters Hermione and Jasper. The romance begins the way so many classic ones do – with suspicions and ulterior motives. When forced into marriage by the turn of a card, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Would this be a marriage of battles? But Manda Collins manages to make it work. Hermione and Jasper build their marriage on the basis of their friendship which quickly turns to passion.
I found the characters to be very likeable and relatable. When they share why they like to gamble and race horses, it was such a clever conversation. By revealing their vulnerabilities to each other and the reader, it allowed the reader to embrace the legitimacy of the union.
This is the second book and I am hoping that Lady Ophelia and the Duke of Trent (both excellent secondary characters in the series to date) get their opportunity to fall in love. This is a great story to read if you like your romance and mystery with exciting characters and excellent writing.

Lady Hermione Upperton has gone against all convention in being admitted membership into the Lords of Anarchy driving club. The lone female in the club sets out for her first outing with the group when her team gets confiscated by the man who won the horses from Hermione's addicted gambler father. Angered and ashamed of what jut happened out in public and full view of the ton, Hermione's friends accompany her away from the park.

Jasper Fawley, the Earl of Mainwaring doesn't agree with the Lords of Anarchy admitting Hermione into the fold, but his feelings for her are not changed by her admittance. Mainwaring admires the lady with all her spirit ans determination and is quite put off by the incident precipitated by her fool of a father. Jasper has an affection for gaming as well, and his talent at cards is quite amazing, but he is nothing like Hermione's father, who more times than not comes away the loser.

In an attempt to free Hermione from Upperton's downfall, Jasper wins her hand in a game of cards. How will the lady who is so against gambling feel about the wager and finding herself betrothed to a consummate gambler?

When Lord Saintcrow, the very man who wins the driving team from Upperton is found dead, Lady Hermione finds herself suspect to the murder. Mainwaring will do what he must to protect the woman who is so quickly stealing his heart. Solving the crime and finding the murderer and holding on to his new wife becomes Jasper's quest,

GOOD EARL GONE BAD by Manda Collins is the second tale in the Lords of Anarchy series. This story with it's stubborn Lady Hermione and the honorable Lord Mainwaring is a slow but steady pace to the finish. Once the pawns were quite clear, the story became more of interest and the simmering romance made it a nice ride.

Welcome back to the Lords of Anarchy... A Club known for it's decadence, it's power and it's men's only stand on driving a curricle. But there are those who want to bring them down.. these men make those silly Sons of Anarchy look positively childish.. ok, not quite true but in a way. Manda Collins writes of devilish men who have found a way to thrive in a society that thrives on the mundane. They are unique, powerful and sexy.. They are rule breakers and trend setters they are every woman's secret fantasy..

Lady Hermione Upperton is unique in and of herself. She is strong, she is determined, she is independent AND she's a wicked whip (no this is not a BDSM novel). Hermoine drives a curricle and longs for nothing more than to be a member of a club. But it seems no one will take her. That is until The Lords of Anarchy open their doors, seriously? This doesn't smell fishy to you??? But finally she's arrived, she's happy! Well until her father gambles her away..

Jasper Fawley, the Earl of Mainwaring likes to take things easy, he's a good friend, an honest man and has his own set of principles. What he doesn't do is gamble for women.. but it's either accept the bet or let an innocent suffer. While he may be attracted to the lovely Hermoine, she's everything that he doesn't get. Why does she have to be, exactly the woman she is, the woman who has captured his attention .

Now Jasper and Hermoine have to clear her name as someone is trying to say she's murdered a member of the Lords of Anarchy.. hmmm... the plot thickens.

A book worth reading, what a great way to spend the evening, wrapped up with Hermoine and Jasper!

Jasper might win Hermione's hand in a game of gambling but for a man who excels at mathematics, we all know it was for a purpose. You can see the chemistry between Hermione and Jasper from the very beginning, although they both resist. He grew up on strict rules on what a lady should or shouldn't do and he believed them Until he met Hermione. She changed everything for him. For her part, she dreamed of him, there was just something about him that she couldn't shake.

There is a bit of a who-done-it murder mystery and Jasper must find the culprit or let Hermione be implicated. There was no way Jasper was going to let that happen. It kept me on my toes because it could have been several people.

The secondary characters were interesting. As this is a series about a driving club that could have dealings in treason, there is lots of intrigue that kept me on my toes. I'm looking forward to the next novel.

ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange of an honest review

It is interesting how one book to the other our view can change.
See, in the first book I didn't feel connection with the couple Leonora and Freddy, despite having enjoyed much of the plot. In this second book I felt sympathy for them.
I enjoyed Jasper and Hermione, mainly because at first they could not bear to stay close to each other, but the chivalrous side of Jasper, Earl of Mainwaring, was decisive.
It was related to the fact that Hermione had lost her horses because her father, an inveterate glamber, bet the horses and lost them. Now, strange murders and crimes starts happening in the city, and at the same time, for some reason, when Jasper sees the way Upperton treats his daughter, he is worried that the man end up selling his daughter for any ruffian.
This means that he needs to take care of Hermione and the best way would be if she were his bride.
Do I need to say Hermione didn't like the news?

Together they need to find out who would be able to kill because of her horses and what is the connection of all this with Lords of Anarchy club.

Great plot and characters. Can't wait for Trent's story.

I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley. I'm calling it. It's not holding my attention and I am forcing myself to read. To me, that makes it not worth it. Hermione, as we are told constantly, is a very stubborn woman. I can't think of a single instance where she was stubborn. Saintcrow comes to take her beloved horses and she puts up the smallest fight before ultimately giving in. Her father then loses her hand in marriage and she is upset just long enough for Jasper to kiss her. After she gets off, all is well. Jasper is supposedly a mathematical genius that does absolutely nothing with it. If a character is going to have that One Defining Characteristic we need to SEE them having that Characteristic.

No romance here. At all. They supposedly don't get along (guessing I missed something from the first book) and then with no real growth or change in circumstances they're married and both happy about it. Also, no conflict. Not between them, and the murder mystery wasn't enough to keep my attention. Probably not going to try this author again.

This is the second book in the Lords of Anarchy Series. I love reading books in a Series, because you get to catch up on what is going on with characters from the previous books and meet new ones that you will love just as much!!!

You will love Hermione and Jasper. !!

Manda has done it again!!! Another wonderful love story with lots of plot twists, mystery, suspense and amazing characters. Her writing is a joy to read because her style flows so well, there is no awkward breaks or unnessary clutter in her books. Her characters joys, sorrows and flaws make them remarkable individuals whose stories make you want to read them over and over again,

If you love awesome Historical Romance, do not miss this book by Manda Collins. If you missed the first one in The Lord of Anarchy Series it is called A Good Rake is Hard to Find. I cannot wait for the next one in the Series which I hope will feature The Duke of Trent and Ophelia!!!

This was quite the adventure, with evil at every turn, and ending with a lovely romance. The characters are warm, loving,(except for the evil guys) not your usual uppity Ton. There are nearly as many bad guys as good guys in this story, but that makes it all the more interesting to read, hanging onto each word, and each page. An enjoyable story, and difficult to put down. The Earl of Mainwaring would be any lady's dream husband, of quiet strength and wisdom, Lady Hermione is certainly not your typical lady, the first to join the Lords of Anarchy, an infamous driving club.
I'm ready to read the next story about Lord Trend the new President of the Lords of Anarchy, Good Dukes Wear Black (Lords of Anarchy #3) by Manda Collins.

I think Jasper likes getting his woman all worked up, “in part,”he said, resting his chin on her head. “And also because you let me put my hand up your skirt a little earlier.”When she gasped in outrage, he kissed her. “There’s my girl.” Hermione has so much spirit in her and I loved how at times she could be a tad bit shy, "she smiled shyly and reached out to stroke his chest. “You’re rather a fine specimen yourself,” she said pertly. “And in the interest of fairness you are wearing far more clothes than I am.” I liked this book Jasper wasn't what I expected and I enjoyed that. I really liked him and Hermione together.

Mandy Collins is becoming on of my favorite historical authors. I love a really well written historical romance and Mandy gets it right every time.
What i love about these books are her characters are that well written that when you meet them as introductions in the book before you get them already when it comes time to read about them.
I absolutely loved Jasper. Everything about him mad me swoon and want more. This is a fast read and doesn't get boring at all.

To be frank, I have no idea what the title has to do with anything that happens in the story. The plot was intricate and interesting, I just felt like there was a little missing for me in the execution. I really liked Mainwaring. He was what made the story for me.

The tension between them and the climax/resolution were a little weak, but overall I enjoyed this historical romance.

The second in The Lords of Anarchy series and just as good as the first. What I like about Ms. Colllins’ book is that they are not all the same. This book not only has different characters but the story is much different from the first book. No different name, same situation here. Jasper does not like it (he is a bit of a chauvinist at the beginning) but he realizes that Hermione is someone who goes after she wants even in a man’s world. Murder and mayhem dot the pages of this story and it is intriguing to see who the villain is in the book. Okay, so you kind of know, but not all the whole story.

An exquisite love story, a captivating mystery, and lovely writing make GOOD EARL GONE BAD a Regency delight!
What a glorious day it was for Lady Hermione Upperton! She has just gained admittance to the previously all-male Lords of Anarchy driving club, even though the president is an unpleasant bloke, she is euphoric and she celebrates with her best friends. However, on the day of her first race, to her consternation, her beloved horses are taken away from her publicly; her father lost them in a gaming hell. Jasper Fawley, the Earl of Mainwaring, witnessed the debacle and feels for Hermione, whom he rather fancies from afar; he is a gambling man himself, but knows when to stop. But Hermione’s trials are far from over, as yet again her father gambles, and this time it is her hand that he loses to Jasper!

GOOD EARL GONE BAD is the second instalment in the Lords of Anarchy series, and Ms. Collins recaps some of the essentials for those who had, alas, not read the first book. I love the friendship between Hermione, Leonora and Ophelia, it feels completely genuine, as well as the camaraderie between the men. The author’s meticulous attention to detail brings the Regency era to life, especially with regards to the limited possibilities for women, as seen through Hermione’s eyes, as she is a headstrong young woman. The author displays much finesse and flair; while she respects the vocabulary and idioms of the era, the narrative is light, and flows easily, and the dialogues feel natural yet feel completely authentic.

GOOD EARL GONE BAD is a meticulously constructed story which successfully blends a terrific mystery with a wonderful romance; the plot is very intricate and the somewhat unhurried pace makes it easy to follow. Jasper is exactly the type of hero I love to read about: he is a gentleman to the end. The chemistry between Hermione and Jasper is undeniable, and they treat each other with respect, they like each other, and O joy, there is not one misunderstanding, or idiotic complication. I felt I knew these people, I really liked them, and I can hardly wait for the next instalment of The Lords of Anarchy!

I actually give 4 ½ stars.

Lady Hermione is passionate about her horses and her ability to drive them as well as any male. When she becomes an unorthodox member of the Lords of Anarchy driving club she is understandably ecstatic, finally a female has proven that she has skills beyond simpering in a drawing room.

When her father, who is addicted to a game of cards loses her team of excellent driving horses to another member of the Lords of Anarchy club, Hermione is furious and heartbroken. Unfortunately her display of emotions was seen publicly and when the new owner of her team turns up murdered – the eyes of the ton turn to Hermione as the culprit.

Hermione’s devastation is not yet complete though. Once again her father gets in too deep at the tables, and gambles away her hand in marriage. Although she may not realize it yet, it was fortunate for Hermione that Jasper, Earl of Mainwaring was the man to win that particular hand of cards.

Now this unlikely couple must solve a mystery and find a way to make their unconventional marriage work. With passions flaring between them one task might be easier than the other.

Good Earl Gone Bad was an excellent adventure. While attempting to clear Hermione’s name, she and Jasper take the time to get to know and understand each other in spite of their sudden marriage. A tentative friendship will eventually blossom into a love that neither expected to find. Yes, there is passion between them that quite heats up the page, yet for me is was the slower unfolding of vulnerabilities and understanding why each acted as they did that was the true romance in this story.

A richly detailed story, Good Earl Gone Bad will slowly, layer by layer unfold an intense, intriguing and satisfying story of two people caught up in circumstances neither one asked for – yet found a lasting love despite how it all began. I would highly recommend this novel for any Historical Romance reader or even anyone who truly loves a well put together, complex love story.

Good Earl Gone Bad is an example of a book that had a ton of potential, but never really connected to me. It is the second in the Lords of Anarchy series which centers around a Regency-era riding club that is obviously inspired by the popular Sons of Anarchy TV show. I usually don't read series out of order, but I was easily able to jump into this book. I just wish that the plot and characters had ended up as intriguing as I had thought they would from the blurb.

Lady Hermione is the first (and only) female member of the Lords of Anarchy. She is thrilled to be invited by club despite their scandalous reputation. Unfortunately, her first riding day comes to a quick end when she learns that her father has gambled away her prized horses and the winner decides to take them away at the event. Things are further complicated when her father returns to the gaming tables and, this time, bets his daughter. Thankfully, the man who wins her hand, Jasper, is not nefarious and these two have already developed a bit of flirtation.

I liked Hermione and Jasper, but never really felt like they moved beyond their initial character descriptions. Hermione is said to be spirited and independent yet I never really felt like the book showed that aspect of her personality. She just seemed to spend her time being shocked by her father's treatment of her and then going along with whatever mischief he caused. Jasper is just a nice guy who is decent enough to rescue Hermione's reputation from her father's gambling, but I never knew much more about him. And then, once they were married halfway through the book, the plot shifted to a murder mystery and there really weren't any of the typical "marriage of convenience" issues to overcome.

Good Earl Gone Bad was decently written and I could see so much of Manda Collins's talent in there. I just wish that it wasn't so predictable and, I hate to say it, boring. I never really felt invested in the love story and that is a problem since that is why I read romance novels.

„Good Earl Gone Bad“ by Manda Collins is the 2nd book in the „Lords of Anarchy“ series. Those lords are a riding club, an exclusive one. I read the first book and I really liked it
Lady Hermione Upperton is the latest member of the “Lord of Anarchy” and wants to ride her curricle with her handsome pair of grays but the night before her father didn’t just lose their house but also her grays. It’s an dishonorable scene when last night’s winners collects his horses in front of everybody else.
The main problem is that her father gambles and loses all the time. Murder happens and one night Hermione’s father loses her hand to the Earl of Mainwaring – another gambler. Can she be happy with a man who is like her father? The fact I that he isn’t like her father, there is no addiction and he rarely loses.
When the new owner of Lady Upperton’s horses dies, she’s a suspect. But Mainwaring may not respect her skills with the reins but he believes her innocent.

Sometimes I asked myself how it can be, that a man loses the hand of his daughter in a single pair of cards – or his house, his money or any other value thing. But on the other hand it is an addiction and eventually there are still countries in this world where marriage is agreed on like this.
I already liked Hermione in book number one of this series but now the story is really focused on her and she’s a great character – not a single minded female but a fighter for her own rights.
The main character have a great development and in the end it is a sweet love story. The way I like it. Some murder, some tension and some sex – my kind of mix.
It’s a quick and easy read but in my opinion you should have read book one to have a continuance and to know the storyline of the “Lords of Anarchy” a little better though it’s not a must.

This is book 2 in the Lords of Anarchy series.

Hermione Upperton is devastated when her father wagers her matched pair and loses them in a card game, but that doesn't even begin to compare to how she feels when she learns that he bet her hand in marriage and lost to the Earl of Mainwaring. The man is a infamous gambler just like her father and he has made his opinion very clear on how he feels about her driving and belonging to the Lords of Anarchy driving club.

Jasper Fawley knows how devastated Hermione will be when he witnesses her father losing her matched pair. He also knows that her father will soon have nothing else to bet but the hand of his daughter, so he approaches him with an offer and wins Hermione with a few turns of the card.

Can they make this marriage work when it starts out so poorly?

LOVED this story! I had a feeling that Collins would pair Hermione and Jasper while I was reading A Good Rake is Hard to Find. Then when I found out that she was, I couldn't believe that I had to wait 7 months to read their story. The wait was definitely worth it though!!

Hermione and Jasper are known for their bickering between each other and Collins continues it with their story, which I loved!! On top of the romance story we also have a mystery to be solved which added another layer and excitement to the story.

The next book in the series stars Ophelia Dauntry and Piers Hamilton, the Duke of Trent. I love that this series revolves around three best friends falling for three other best friends!! That means we get to see all the couples with each story and start to see the relationships building between the couples!

April is a long time away...hope I can make it that long!!

Thanks go out to St. Martin's Press for a copy of the book in exchange of an honest review.
