Tiny Hiker

Rate this book
The tiny hiker finishes loading up her pack and excitedly gets on the trail, leading her family through the ancient trees toward their beach campsite.

At first it's fun to explore—she finds a hollow log, wriggles under a fallen tree, and spots a slimy slug! But then the trail starts getting steeper, and when her legs get tired, she trips on a root and takes a hard fall. Now her knee hurts, her elbows hurt...everything hurts! She just wants to give up.

But after a little break, a tasty snack and an exciting glimpse of the beach, the tiny hiker feels better and decides she will make it. With one final scamper over some giant beach logs, she finds the beach. Time to play! And at the end of the long day, after sitting by the campfire, the tiny hiker gets cozy in her sleeping bag and falls fast asleep.

I wish this book had been around when my son was small. We could have used it to inspire him to keep moving when we were out hiking! With its rhythmic cadence, humor, playfulness, and sense of adventure, it's a great book for read alouds and prepping to brave the great outdoors. Tiny hiker starts with enthusiasm, but faces setbacks and bumps and bruises along the way. Tempted to give up, tiny hiker digs deep to find her resolve to keep going and declare victory at her campsite. I love how she insists she's not tired before snuggling into her sleeping bag for blissful sleep. Back matter is presented in a highly engaging graphic novel format, showing the things that a tiny hiker might want to put in their backpack. Highly recommended!

What a great book for anyone who loves to camp and get outside and explore with their kids! The rhythm is so fun and catchy I found myself wanting to keep saying things to that beat even after reading the book. The illustrations are adorable and small things -- like the look in the child’s eyes while climbing the steep path -- really convey the feeling of a racing heart and struggle when trying to get to the top of a hill. I also enjoyed the end papers with the Tiny Hiker’s Pack – kids will love seeing what should be packed for a trip, and even the map illustration is cool to see!

A delightful story that celebrates the efforts of the youngest adventurers in the family, the tiny hiker! Natasha brings her genuine love of nature to her lyrical text and empathy for the challenges of being the youngest, yet bravest and most determined hiker on the trail. The book is filled with beautiful language throughout for children and parents to savour and illustrations that are adorable and full of engaging details.

From hiking prep to the satisfying, snuggly end, Tiny Hiker takes us along on a fun adventure. Readers will be fully engaged by the poetic text that's paired with luscious illustrations. As the engrossed hiker perseveres through fatigue and a fall, the audience too is left feeling encouraged alongside the charming protagonist. The kid-friendly map in the endpapers enhances the experience. A celebration of nature, I highly recommend this book!

I received this book from Edelweiss in exchange of an honest review.

I just had to pick up this book! It sounded like such a fun treat to read! Especially since it is about hiking and camping. Hiking here, well you could hike, but you will quickly find civilization, haha. And camping? You cannot just pitch a tent wherever you want, oh no. Wild camping is forbidden. You have to find a camping area (and pay). So I just love reading books like this one and go along on a fun day trip!

In this one we meet a tiny little girl, she is going hiking with her family. At first she is absolutely hyped (as one is when new adventures start), but then after a while we see her just getting more and more tired, forgetting to check for her family, bumping and falling. It did give me a bit of a chuckle though. She went from OMG YES to OMG LET ME LIE HERE. I do love her energy though and I loved how she found all the little things, the little details while her family marched onwards. I was worried when she really got tired (and had a tiny tantrum) but proud of her when she continued. The hike was really fun though, I love how it goes through the forest, but also over streams, and then we pass a lake/beach. I really wanted to step into the story several times to just be part of this one. How fun it must be to just be able to wander for hours upon hours and not come across anything human. Love!

I liked that at the end we learn what she has packed in her pack. From hats to maps to warm coats to comfy sleeping pads.

The art was fantastic, the style was just so much fun, full of details, colours. It was as if I was truly there with this family. Oh, and bonus points for the fun map included in the end!

However I feel that the font used can be better, plus the placement. On some pages it worked, but at other times it felt like the text was an afterthought, hurriedly added. It just fell away in the illustrations, and that is a shame!

All in all, I would recommend this fun book about a little girl taking a hike with friends/family.
