Rate this book
From New York Times best-selling authors Penelope Ward and Vi Keeland comes a new standalone romance.

When the board of directors of my company mandated that I go to a wellness facility in small-town Maine to recharge, that shouldn’t have

1. Using a ladder to sneak out of the bedroom window at night and going to the local bar.
2. Getting so drunk that the bar owner brought me upstairs to sleep it off in his bed.
3. Waking up staring at the taxidermy moose head on said bar owner’s wall.
4. Falling for said bar owner who was the most drop-dead gorgeous man I’ve ever seen.

But Brock Hawkins was so much more than just the hot bar owner. He owned half the town, built log cabins with his bare hands, and was apparently the most eligible man in all of Meadowbrook.

He was also a cinnamon roll despite his seemingly rock-hard exterior.

And the last man I should’ve been falling for—because my time in this small town was limited.

I had to head back to my life in New York City, one that was the complete opposite from the kind Brock lived.

He was denim. I was diamonds.

The problem was, the sexy lumberjack wasn’t the type of man who was easy to walk away from. Hell, I couldn’t even part with his plaid shirt that had become a constant fixture wrapped around my shoulders most days, let alone think about erasing him from my life.

A life with Brock, though, would have to be all or nothing.

Go big or go home.

I just didn’t realize that choosing to go big might also mean getting my heart broken when Brock’s life took a turn neither of us saw coming.

February Shaw lives in New York City where she owns her own company designing purses. After a few rough months, she needs a break from her busy schedule, and travels all the way to northern Maine to spend time at a wellness center recharging and working on herself. She’s worried it might not be the best experience, but then things take an unexpected turn when she meets a mysterious man who intrigues her. Brock Hawkins owns the popular local bar, and half the town. He’s a big, burly, grumpy, sexy plaid wearing lumberjack with a hidden sweet side. He shows her kindness when she’s at her most vulnerable, and is caring to everyone that crosses his path. She thinks he’s great, and wants to get to know him better, but her time in Meadowbrook is limited. They are very different, and even though he isn’t her usual type, he excites her. Soon she realizes this small town has more to offer than she could have ever hoped for, and she wishes she could have more time there. When hearts suddenly get involved, will their story have an expiration date, or will they take a chance on love, and get a happily ever after?

Denim & Diamonds by Penelope Ward and Vi Keeland is a standalone, slow burn, forced proximity, small town, opposites attract, grumpy/sunshine romance about unexpected love and new beginnings. It’s a story full of humor, emotion, fabulous banter and all the swoon. This couple’s chemistry was on fire, and had me captivated from the beginning. I really enjoyed this book, and couldn’t stop smiling! :))

I still have the best book buzz after finishing Denim & Diamonds by  Penelope Ward and Vi Keeland! I couldn't put this book down if I tried—and let's be real, I didn't even consider trying.

Brock and February are total opposites in the best way. He's a rugged, lumberjack-esque bartender living the small-town life in Maine. She's a high-powered New York City handbag designer staying at a wellness resort. He's denim, flannel, and grit rather than flash. She's diamonds. And somehow, against all odds, they make perfect sense. February has huge aspirations for her company, and Brock loves his life in Maine.  Their opposites-attract connection was magnetic, full of fun banter, feels, spice, and moments that tugged hard at my heart. I didn't see that plot twist coming. I laughed, I swooned, and that taxidermy wake-up scene?  I'm still laughing, thinking about February's legendary first night in town.

Vi and Penelope delivered another heartfelt story full of fun, feels, spice, charm, and a plot twist I didn't see coming. Brock and February's journey from strangers to soulmates is one I'll be thinking about for a long time.

Just an okay read for me. Very predictable and a little boring but overall not a bad read.
Also what’s with these two authors and accidental pregnancies? Almost everything I’ve read by them has this trope 🙄

PS: they need to switch up narrators from time to time. I don’t think anyone can stand listen to their audiobooks back to back with same narrators over and over…boring!!!

4 ⭐️'s

Saying Brock and February's relationship is unconventional is an understatement for sure. These two are put through the mill and then some.

I loved how in depth the story was...and there was a lot going on! I think my favorite is Oak...he was just the sweetest. However, there are some yummy brothers of Brock's that I wouldn't mind a story or two about.

And that ending? Amazing!

When February Shaw has to go to a “wellness retreat” curtesy of her boss she does everything to leave. Like sneak out to a bar! That’s how she might of drank a wee bit too
much and woke up in a strange room…with a man named Brock Hawkins! Oopsie. They definitely had an interesting meeting but Brock seems to have a few secrets and February wants to figure out who Mr. Lumberjack/Bar owner truly is. Will this grumpy small town man and nosy city gal ever see eye to eye? Wow, some scenes had me laughing out loud and their banter was perfection. I loved every minute of them getting to know each other and also his brothers were hilarious. Such a feel good, strangers to lovers romance with one huge twist! Told in first person and dual POV.

I’m going to cool it with Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward novels. Honestly, I haven’t liked their last few novels. So, going forward I will be reading multiple reviews before picking up any of their novels.

Denim & Diamonds opens with a misogynistic premise for the characters’ meet cute: the FMC was sent to a wellness retreat by her board of directors. Once there, she sneaks out of her room and meets the owner of a bar and they hit it off.

The chemistry between the FMC and MMC was nonexistent. It’s like Keeland and Ward wanted to do the sunshine x grumpy trope, but failed to commit fully. Instead, the MMC is a burly lumberjack (I hope you like lumberjacks because that’s all he’s described as) who does good deeds for everyone in the smalltown. The FMC is supposed to be an independent business owner (which is unfortunately immediately cut down when you remember why she’s at the wellness retreat) feeling like something is missing in her life.

What could possibly be missing in her life? Spoiler:

There’s a twist that derails the FMC and MMC’s relationship. This twist then dominates the rest of the novel. What little chemistry and spice there was between the FMC and MMC disappears. The book was just a slop until the end.

Spoiler:

Overall, Denim & Diamonds was a misogynistic romance with a twist that made me almost DNF. I suffered through until the end and I probably shouldn’t have. Save yourself!

So let down by this book! So disappointed with this author duo! Usually love these ladies. Big swing and a miss here. Book notes below that I jot down as I listen. (Big spoilers below)

* Ummm where’s the lead up? I feel like I missed a couple chapters.
* WTF kind of name is February??
* I’m so sick of MMCs calling red-headed FMCs “Red”
* How are they falling for each other when they have seen each other literally twice…and she was hammered one of those times?
* I couldn’t buy the chemistry between these characters if it was free.
* Giving her his late grandparents’ bracelet!?
* So. Much. Eye rolling.
* “You don’t hold a candle to Nina” ummm…shouldn’t he tell her his ex doesn’t hold a candle TO HER??
* Her reaction to the pregnancy was ridiculous.
*Enough with the graphic sex—we get it, that’s your only connection to each other. Skipping past this.
* Brock’s an asshole for not honoring Nina’s request about a yearly letter. Lets SIX years pass? Granted, she could have reached out when his first birthday went by without a letter, but overall I think Nina handled things quite well, aside from waiting so long to tell Brock she was pregnant with his kid. She could allowed him part of a decision instead of just aborting the baby. And she wasn’t a bad person for realizing she couldn’t/shouldn’t be a mother and needed the clean break. Why wouldn’t she “deserve” it?

ARC & ALC REVIEW
📚Denim & Diamonds by Penelope Ward & Vi Keeland
🎤Andi Arndt & Teddy Hamilton

DUAL NARRATION
4.5 ⭐

Oh my heart! Vi & Penelope have done it again. I am in love with this book, these characters & the warm, cozy emotions it evoked in me. As with most of their stories, this one is totally unexpected, a bit messy but left me clutching at my heart! Brock & February have the twistiest time getting to their HEA, but this story proves that sometimes the best things can come from the most unexpected beginnings and, "where there's a will, there's a way."

Brock is the epitome of a small-town hunk. A swoon worthy "lumberjack" who is building his own home, does a good deed at every turn & has a flannel shirt for every day of the week! February is ferocious, funny & not afraid to push others buttons when it comes to life, love or work.

Their unusual meet cute brings these two together & a friendship begins to form. This isn't insta-love necessarily but its definitely insta-connection and they both feel it. These two are complete opposites yet somehow they fit perfectly together. They honestly bring out the best in each other. Brock is so open & vulnerable and February is apprehensive, afraid & closed off. I LOVED every minute of them getting to know one another.

Between Brock's busy-body brothers, taxidermy running amuck & a reliable ladder, there are so many hilarious moments where I laughed right out loud. Their banter is fiery & sexy! This book was such a fun listen with one HUGE twist that turns on all the emotions. Listening to these two try & figure out what their future will look like had me all up in my feels but in the end it was sacrifice and a big amount of determination that brought Brock & February the sweetest HEA. And THIS epilogue???? Crud! It was seriously the sweetest thing ever.

🎧Let's talk audio: People, Teddy & Andi bring their "A-game" to everything they do. They are a favorite pairing of mine, forever & always! They have the gift of turning a slow burn listen into one that you just can't stop listening to. They just go so well together & their performances of Brock & February were funny, heartwarming & emotional. Their voices harmonize so effortlessly, each one with the perfect amount of heat, edge & charm.

Per usual, Vi & Penelope give you all the heat and heart you want in a great story! I LOVE their writing & I'll continue to scream to the highest mountaintop (hopefully with a hot lumberjack 😏) about how much I enjoy their work! Ya'll, just do it! Grab this one anyway you can get it. I loved it. Every flippin word!

Thanks to Penelope Ward & Vi Keeland for a copy of the ARC & ALC. All thoughts are my own.

5 Star Review Denim & Diamonds Penelope Ward & Vi Keeland

Ebook/Audio:
There is something about Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward’s style of writing that resonates with me.

They weave a story that has me hooked from the very start. Set in Meadowbrook a small town in Maine, Brock Hawkins (aka Lumberjack) and February Shaw story ticked all the boxes for me.
Add in Brock’s Saint Bernard dog, Oak and you just know you’re in for an entertaining read and listen.

This story will tug at your heart and keep you captivated from the first to the last chapter. In fact this is one of my top reads and listens of 2025.

The narration by Teddy Hamilton and Andi Arndt brought the characters to life for me. Their voices were easy to listen too and they brought all the passion, drama, romance and humour to their performances. They most certainly did justice to the wonderful characters and story that the authors created.

What an enjoyable read!

February Shaw is a New York City entrepreneur who designs purses, but after a challenging few months, she has to take a break and heads to a wellness centre in northern Maine to recharge. Initially apprehensive about her getaway, her experience takes a delightful turn when she encounters Brock Hawkins, the ruggedly handsome owner of the local bar. With his gruff exterior and plaid attire, Brock surprises her with his unexpected kindness, especially when she feels vulnerable. Despite their differences and her limited time in the small town of Meadowbrook, February finds herself drawn to him in ways she never anticipated. As their connection deepens, she begins to realize that this quaint town holds more promise than she ever imagined. With emotions running high, the question looms: will they embrace their budding romance, or will their story come to an end before it truly begins?

Denim & Diamonds by Penelope Ward and Vi Keeland is a charming standalone romance that beautifully captures the essence of unexpected love, filled with humour, heartfelt moments, and undeniable chemistry that kept me smiling throughout.

A must-read!

I really enjoyed the contrast between the country charm of the male mc and the big city vibe of the female lead—it made for a fun dynamic. Ward and Keeland did a great job blending their worlds in a way that kept me turning the pages. It was a solid read on Kindle Unlimited. These authors are always a must-read, and this one was no exception in delivering a unique romance. Denim & Diamonds is one you should read!

3.75⭐️ Honestly the beginning of the book was 5 stars, it was sooo good! But unfortunately, this was very insta love and the pacing felt off. Too much stuff happened and the story progressed in a way I didn’t expect and didn’t really like 100%. But it was still a fun read for the most part.

3.5 out of 5

Sometimes coming up with the right grade is the hardest thing and I ask myself if I think I’ll read this book again. With this book the answer is ‘I’m not sure’. I’ve a number of books by this duo and while I like this book, there are others I’d be more likely to read. But this book is free on KU so I’d say for sure go this route.

February, cool name, is our heroine. She’s a high power owner of her own company in New York. She’s been ordered by her board of directors to check herself into a wellness in a small country town to deal with her out of control stress. One night she escapes the centre, heads to town, heads to a local bar, gets blitzed and ends ups sleeping it off in the upstairs apartment of the owner, Brock, our hero. She wakes up the next morning and gets chatting with him. There is an immediate connection between the two and they continue meeting and falling deeper and deeper for each other. February is loving the small town, but she also loves her hectic life in New York. The more she falls in love with Brock the more torn she becomes.

I think part of why I didn’t mark this book higher is because I couldn’t really relate to February. That kind of busy, high stress life doesn’t appeal to me at all. I like life to be simpler and more laid back where I’m not constantly zipping around the world, working like a fiend, with lots of long days and active social life. I also found the book dragged a bit in places. But overall I enjoyed it. Both Brock and February are likeable people. Brock is a great hero who is completely gone for February and wants her to stay. But he completely gets how important her career is to her and that that is a part of her he loves. He is an important part of the small town and loves the lifestyle. He knows he couldn’t live the big, frantic lifestyle of New York and thus they seem to be at an impasse. It’s an interesting dilemmas.

I’m glad I read this book which is always a plus.

Denim and Diamonds was such a cute and funny romance. When February is mandated by her company to go to a wellness facility to recharge in a small town in Maine. She didn't expect to sneak out of her room, get drunk at a bar and wake up at the bar owner's place. She also didn't expect to fall in love with the bar owner. Enter Brock. He was the most eligible bachelor in town owning almost every business in town. February was falling for him, but her time was limited. She would have to go back to New York eventually.

This was my first novel by this duo. I've listened to a few books by Penelope, but haven't read anything by Vi Keeland yet. That is immediately going to change. After listening to this book I want to check out their backlist. I loved the writing. I loved the pacing of the story and I loved the characters. I loved the easy banter and felt the chemistry between Brock and February. They were so cute together. Their interactions together were so hilarious. The plot twist shocked me and was unexpected.

As for the audiobook narration, it's amazing! Performed in dual by Teddy Hamilton and Andi Arndt. These two were perfect as Brock and February. Teddy brought out Brock's grumpiness and overprotectiveness. Andi brought out February's spontaneity by using a cheerful tone and exuded her playful side. Together Teddy and Andi brought these characters to life. They delivered the comedic moments so well with their expressive tones. In the more heartfelt moments they brought out the angst and tension. Overall, I really enjoyed it!

Audiobook out now!

Thank you to the authors for my ALC and for the opportunity to review and listen.

Denim and Diamonds by Penelope Ward and Vi Keeland is an opposites-attract romance. It takes place in a charming small town in Maine and follows February Shaw, a high-powered city woman sent to a wellness retreat, and Brock Hawkins, the rugged bar owner with a cinnamon-roll heart. Their chemistry is instant, their banter electric, and their emotional journey unexpectedly deep. These two brought put the best in each other right from the start and just completed each other,
Ward and Keeland deliver a heartwarming, witty, and steamy story that will make you laugh and also fill your heart with love and happy moments. Brock’s flannels felt like a side character and went along with his personality and February’s fierce independence make for a delightful pairing that proves sometimes the most unlikely matches are just the best together. A perfect escape for fans of slow-burn romance and happily ever after.
These two stole my heart as they became friends, lovers and found a way to be together while giving the other the space to be who they are at heart and still be there for the other and become a family.
Denim and Diamonds is not just a romance—it’s a story about redemption, second chances, and discovering unexpected joy where you least expect it.

Denim & Diamonds is like a dry martini—shaken, not stirred. Unexpected, a little messy, and smoother than it has any right to be😜. February and Brock’s story takes a twisty path from oops to oh-my-heart, proving that sometimes the best things come from the most unlikely beginnings.🥰

Brock is the ultimate small-town swoon worthy ‘lumberjack’—sweet, guarded, and one flannel short of a wilderness calendar😬. And February? She’s fierce, funny, and not afraid to push back when life (or love) tries to knock her down or steal her company 😡.

Teddy Hamilton and Andi Arndt bring their A-game, turning this friendly slow-burn into a can’t-stop-listening experience. Their voices melt together like gin and vermouth—equal parts strong, sharp, and intoxicating.🍸

This one’s for anyone who’s ever thought their past could ruin their future but ended up right where they were meant to be.💙

When Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward release a book together, you know you’re in for sparkling banter, swoony romance, and at least one moment that makes you scream into your pillow. Denim & Diamonds is no exception. This single dad romance flips expectations in the best way, pairs it with a rom-com level meet cute, and serves a love story that glitters brighter than its title. My 4-star review breaks down what I loved, what made me roll my eyes (looking at you, ex-girlfriend drama), and why Brock and February are characters you’ll want to root for.

Single Dad Romance (with a twist)
This isn’t your cookie-cutter single dad storyline. Brock brings warmth, responsibility, and swoon without falling into cliché territory. The way the gender roles shift gives the trope a refreshing update.

Meet Cute Romance Magic
If anyone could turn an awkward first encounter into instant rom-com gold, it’s Keeland and Ward. Brock and February’s introduction is everything readers love in a contemporary romance novel.

Romantic Comedy with Heart
This book balances laugh-out-loud banter with heartfelt moments that remind you why these two authors dominate the genre.

Ex-Girlfriend Drama
Here’s where things lost a little sparkle. The late-game ex-girlfriend chaos felt like a soap opera twist that nearly had me throwing my Kindle across the room.

Ex-Girlfriend Plot Twist: Necessary conflict or unnecessary chaos? Depends on your patience level. For me, it was eye-roll inducing.
Pacing Dip Near the End: The story detoured just when the romance was sparkling brightest.

Despite the ex-girlfriend chaos, Denim & Diamonds by Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward still shines. With a meet cute straight out of a rom-com, banter that sparkles, and a refreshing take on the single dad trope, it’s a love story worth reading.

One night. One ladder. One hot lumberjack. And suddenly, New York City didn’t feel like home anymore… 🪵❤️✨

Read if you like:
✨ opposites attract
✨ city girl x small-town cinnamon roll
✨ lumberjack vibes + plaid overload
✨ forced proximity + unexpected roommates
✨ flirty banter + emotional depth
✨ dual POV audiobooks that hit every emotion

📚 Denim & Diamonds is a heart-tugging, laugh-out-loud romance that pairs a high-powered NYC exec with a flannel-wrapped bar owner who just might be the most emotionally available man in all of Maine. February’s “wellness retreat” turns into a full-blown emotional rollercoaster when she ends up in Brock Hawkins’s bed (platonically… at first). From there, it’s ladders, moose heads, and an unexpected friendship that starts burning slow—and deep.

👨‍👧 Brock is the ultimate small-town dream: rugged, grounded, kind to his core, and so swoony it should be illegal. He builds log cabins, owns half the town, and has a heart as big as his shoulders. February is sharp, driven, and emotionally walled-up—but hilarious and vulnerable beneath all that city polish. Their dynamic is pure magic: opposites who challenge, soften, and complete each other.

💞 This isn’t an insta-love story, but the connection? Instant and electric. Their journey from slow-burn flirtation to deep, real love is messy, vulnerable, and full of little moments that sneak up on your heart. There’s laughter, there’s longing, and one twist that’ll wreck you (in the best way). And that epilogue? Literal perfection.

👧 Quirky small-town charm shines here, from nosy brothers to questionable taxidermy. The setting is rich and cozy, and the side characters bring a warmth that makes Meadowbrook feel like home—not just to February, but to us.

✍️ Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward are a powerhouse duo, and Denim & Diamonds is peak comfort-meets-steam. Their signature mix of sharp banter, slow-build intimacy, and emotional payoff is all here. Every time I start a new book from Penelope and Vi, I am extremely nervous, because I don't know what to expect. In previous years, their stories were amazing and received 5 solid stars from me, but recently, it's been very hard to connect to their ideas. The main plot might be good and dramatic, but it always lacks something; it lacks a complex plot.

Denim and Diamonds reflects on a very atypical couple, who have everything against them. February lives in NY, has a prolific business, and a glamorous lifestyle, while Brock lives in a small cabin near the woods in Maine, in a quiet place that seems to soothe him just fine. When they meet, the attraction is visibly there, but the differences in home, logistics, and way of life take a toll on their courage, and they are reluctant to begin a relationship.

As you all know, when February and Brock actually decide to give it a try, all their road is packed with uncertainties and fear, because none of them wants to give up what they already have. It is a very interesting plot and a valuable life lesson for all of us, because a long-distance relationship can be difficult and may not end well. When drama and an OMG twist are added to the plot, things become more complex, but at the same time, more annoying because none of the characters know which way to go.

February was clearly not my favorite heroine, but she didn't do bad, given the circumstances. She suffers from burnout and has some traumas from her childhood that make her fear a relationship and men, in general. But she is very smart and witty and has that independence that I love in a successful woman. She knows how to defend herself, but in the romantic department, she is very confused. Brock is her complete opposite, but very loyal and fierce when it comes to engaging in something long-term. Because of the OMG twist I mentioned above, things will get complicated for him, but everything will show what a good man he is and how committed he is to doing the right thing.

Despite everything I wrote, the book was not that complex in plot for me, but it was a life story worth mentioning and discussing, because in the scenario that February and Brock were put in, few people might actually know what to do. What do you choose? Love, stability, or a career? Is it that easy to give everything up to start a new life? Can you make it work for both of you?? These are only some questions that were raised due to the plot, but as in the construction of some action or something, for me, it was not dynamic at all.
