✨ARC Review✨

A dystopian horror, set in the Australian Outback, with terrifying monsters causing chaos and death. 💀

This was a fun yet creepy read, and what seems like an easy search for a missing sister turns into something straight from a horror movie. Not everyone or everything is as it seems.
It gives Wolf Creek vibes, with monsters instead of that one crazy dude. 😅

And I love that it was set in my own backyard, Aussie books hit different. 🥺

Wolverine Frogs sets up this amazing premise— across Australia, people are transforming into monsters. No one knows how, no one knows why.

Lara is searching for her missing sister, Polly. Helping her along the way is Ethan, who is incredibly unpleasant after the first few chapters. They go along the torn up country as people try to get on with their lives.

The interludes throughout the book were my favorite. These characters are introduced, and they’re incredibly compelling individuals. Their plot lines, despite their brevity, were more interesting to read through than the majority of Lara’s story.

The concept of this book is fantastic. I am not disparaging that in the least. The execution is lacking. I do think it could’ve used a few more rounds of structural editing. Parts of the book are unclear, some vaguer aspects needed expanding on, and there were a few plot holes: ex, Lara choosing to trust Ethan after he has continually betrayed her. The prose was also a bit too repetitive for me.

Holly Scott does show promise. This book reads as a debut novel, but I have no doubt that she will become an excellent author.

As a last note, I did receive an advanced reader copy!

Holly Scott's inaugural horror novel weaves a fictional narrative involving a national emergency in Australia, precipitated by the rapid spread of perilous shape-shifting monsters, juxtaposed with a personal story of a girl reflecting on her turbulent family life.the young girl dealing with her mother's suicide and the impact it has on her family dynamics. Lara contemplates her mother's harshness and her father's struggles, exposing a complex emotional terrain. The narrative delves into themes of power, control, and the aftermath of violence. She reflects on her past, her recollections of childhood, and the unavoidable metamorphosis into a monstrous being.

Holly Rose Scott Your writing style is so vivid and immersive. I felt like I was right there with Lara as she navigated her turbulent family life and confronted those menacing creatures. Fan art of the characters would be amazing!
