Literature, Theory, and Common Sense

In the late twentieth century, the common sense approach to literature was deemed naïve. Roland Barthes proclaimed the death of the author, and Hillis Miller declared that all interpretation is theoretical. In many a literature department, graduate students spent far more time on Derrida and Foucault than on Shakespeare and Milton. Despite this, common sense approaches to literature--including the belief that literature represents reality and authorial intentions matter--have resisted theory with tenacity. As a result, argues Antoine Compagnon, theorists have gone to extremes, boxed themselves into paradoxes, and distanced others from their ideas. Eloquently assessing the accomplishments and failings of literary theory, Compagnon ultimately defends the methods and goals of a theoretical commitment tempered by the wisdom of common sense.

While it constitutes an engaging introduction to recent theoretical debates, the book is organized not by school of thought but around seven central questions: literariness, the author, the world, the reader, style, history, and value. What makes a work literature? Does fiction imitate reality? Is the reader present in the text? What constitutes style? Is the context in which a work is written important to its apprehension? Are literary values universal?

As he examines how theory has wrestled these themes, Compagnon establishes not a simple middle-ground but a state of productive tension between high theory and common sense. The result is a book that will be met with both controversy and sighs of relief.

Né le 20 juillet 1950 à Bruxelles, dans une famille de six enfants. Son père, le général Jean Compagnon fait la guerre de 1940 puis les guerres d’Indochine et d’Algérie. Orphelin de mère à quatorze ans, il passe son enfance à Londres, Tunis, Washington et fait sa classe de rhétorique dans un lycée militaire de la Sarthe.

Ancien élève de l'Ecole polytechnique, ingénieur des ponts et chaussées et docteur ès lettres, Antoine Compagnon est maître de conférences à l'Ecole polytechnique (1978-1985), professeur à l'Institut français du Royaume-Uni à Londres (1980-1981), à l'université Columbia à New York depuis 1985, à l'université du Mans (1989-1990) et à l'université Paris 4 (1994-2006). Il est également membre du Conseil national de l'enseignement supérieur et de la recherche (Cneser) de 2002 à 2007 et de la Commission Pochard sur la revalorisation du métier d'enseignant (2007).

Professeur de littérature française au Collège de France depuis 2006, il est membre, entre autres, du comité de rédaction des revues telles que Critique, The Romanic Review, Bulletin de la Société des amis de Montaigne, The French Review, Genesis, Cambridge Studies in French, L'Année Baudelaire, Revue d'histoire littéraire de la France, Les Cahiers du judaïsme.
Spécialiste de Montaigne et de Proust, il écrit de nombreux ouvrages sur la littérature.

En 2012, il reçoit le titre de Professeur Honoris causa d'HEC : « La littérature, ça paye ».

Antoine Compagnon est chevalier de la Légion d'honneur et commandeur des Palmes académiques.

A really great overview of literary theory from Plato to the 1970s. The unifying thesis is that theory sets itself in opposition to common sense and thus is driven to logical paradoxes. Compagnon's stated goal is to expose the assumptions of both theory and common sense, and usually attempts to find a synthesis that will satisfy both (or neither) parties. The shadow of Roland Barthes hangs heavy over this book.

In truth, the real joy here is his exploration of the seven topics he sets out for himself, which can be simply listed as literature, author, world, reader, style, history, and value. In each case, Compagnon provides a historical narrative, describes the central questions, and demonstrates how one might re-think the relevant topic.

Highly recommended to anyone who wants to seriously engage with literary theory but hopes to avoid the mind-numbing prose of the great post-structuralists.

Ele atende bem sua proposta e possui uma estruturação bem definida. A partir de embates teóricos de dois extremos, a luta acaba em aporia. Uma ótima história da teoria literária a partir das categorias do literário.

Un libro de consulta (reiterada) obligada. Aunque tiene sus valles de sopor, Compagnon logra sacarnos de esos pantanos de terminología y nos lleva a comprender básicamente su demonio.

Edebiyat, yazar, dünya, okur, üslup, tarih ve değer olmak üzere yedi başlıkta edebiyat teorisini işliyor yazar. Başlıklardan da anlaşılacağı üzere kapsamlı bir yaklaşımı var. Bir metnin nasıl edebiyat olduğunu, dilin kullanımını, okurun pozisyonunu, yazarın niyetini ve toplumda edebiyatın ifadelerini okumak beni fazlasıyla tatmin etti. Teorilerin genelinde bu sorulara cevaplar arıyorum. Elbette bundan fazlası var kitapta. Compagnon çok muzip bir araştırmacı. Başlıkların hemen hepsini ilgi çekici kılan bir üslubu var. Kişisel olarak Dünya başlığı dışında tüm başlıkları çok iyi yazılmış buldum.

Edebiyat teorisi dendiğinde yoğun metin analizi ve tarihsel karşılaştırmalar geliyor aklıma. Özellikle Avrupa menşeli teorik çalışmaların geneli bu şekilde. Compagnon’dan da Fransız yapısalcılığının zorlayıcılığını beklerken beni farklı bir yere sürükledi. Çözümlemelere gömülmeden de teorik okumalar yapılır dedirtti. Moretti’den sonra ilgimi çeken bir edebiyat profesörü oldu. Savaş Kılıç’ın çevirisi de kusursuzdu.

This is a much better choice for an introduction to literary theories than the more famous one by Terry Eagleton (one which I hate with passion). Compagnon presents a clear and well-argued account of this field. He tends to show its improvements and shortcomings in one stroke, hinting at a more balanced, nuanced, or co-existing solution for each topic (his division/choice of topics is much better than the theory books nowadays, which tend to focus more on the conflict between the once popular deconstruction and various political/philosophical trends, which only confuses/scares the readers). I read this in the Chinese translation, and I don't think there is an English version, which is prob why it is not recommended to college students in the U.S.

Fuera coñas, ¿no ha estado mal? Tiene sus partes densas pero me parece que expone muy bien el recorrido de la teoría y crítica literaria, centrándose en Francia (es francés, qué vamos a hacerle) y me parece acertado decir que, en la literatura (que no en la realidad), no podemos solo emplear un método de análisis para entenderla en su complejidad. Porque la definición de literatura es ya compleja de narices, y no va a ser la misma dependiendo de con quién hables. Y en ella te puedes permitir dudar, cuestionar, y no creo que un método único y exclusivo vaya a darte la solución. En mi opinión, es importante ver la literatura como lo que es, en contraposición a la realidad, pero, precisamente por ello, conviene estudiar su relación con la realidad y cómo influye. (Y creo que la forma es lo más importante para acceder luego a todo, cosa que creo que últimamente se descuida en pos de la inmediatez, pero esto soy ya yo divagando).
Me gusta cómo llega a sus ideas si bien no siempre coincido en todo, pero de ahí nace siempre el debate, cosa que está bien. Que a saber, que este señor igual es luego un personaje, pero el libro me gusta.
Es verdad que es un poco denso y a veces sí que algunas cosas parecen algo forzadas, pero me parece que el propósito es muy ambicioso (cosa que no juega a su favor) y que, más o menos, lo consigue, si bien a veces sí que dan ganas de decirle: "Bueno, ok".
No sé, siempre que reseño un libro que tengo que reseñar para clase acabo haciendo un comentario muy caótico y divagando, pero bueno, cualquier cosa antes que ponerme a escribir en serio y que el balance es, sorprendentemente, positivo.

Teria me surpreendido muito se tivesse lido esse livro por volta do terceiro ou quarto período da graduação em Letras. Mas já no 2 ano de doutorado, estudando especificamente teoria literária, o livro me circulou temas e querelas pouco novidosas e, inclusive, comete alguns deslizes voluntários (aparentemente) a troco de atacar a teoria para manter o seu ponto de vista do "meio termo" e suas aporias.
Enfim, vale a leitura, principalmente se é um neófito no campo e precisa compreender conceitos basilares ao mesmo tempo que seus pontos cegos.

P.S: A conclusão "esse trabalho é acima do bem e do mal" é risível.

"Como la democracia, la crítica es el menos malo de los regímenes, y aunque no sepamos cuál es el mejor, de lo que no tenemos duda es de que los otros son peores. Así que no he abogado por una teoría entre otras, ni por el sentido común, sino por la crítica de todas las teorías, incluida la crítica del sentido común. Muy buena perspectiva de distintas escuelas y teorías literarias a lo largo del siglo XX desde un punto de vista Occidental. Personalmente creo que el autor falla en su objetivo de hacer reflexionar al lector y que su falta de deseo de posicionarse y presentar su punto de vista funcionan en detrimento de la obra, haciéndola más pesada.
En todo caso, no es un mal libro para ganar un poco de perspectiva respecto lo que es la literatura y los nombres importantes presentes en la historia de su estudio, eso sí, recomiendo una taza de café al lado o algún tipo de estimulante para acompañar la lectura.

Remarkably fair-minded, and terribly urbane, presentation of the issues, Compagnon is still not able to offer much in the way of ways out--but what am I blathering on about: I only read the first half.

Pas terrible comme livre traitant sur la critique littéraire, en revanche, intéressant pour tous les termes liés à la littérature.

Es una muy buena iniciación a la teoría literaria, con su terminología compleja y citaciones de cualquier cantidad de autores que escucho en clase: Jauss, Goodman, Fish, Jakobson y los dos grandes... Genette y Barthes. Me parece que en su mayoría está bien explicado. Algunos capítulos, sin embargo requieren múltiples lecturas y mi rating de 3 estrellas me parece perfecto ya que en el mejor de los casos conseguí entender casi la mitad de lo que expone Compagnon.

I think that one of the reasons why I really don't like this book is because it was my obligatory reading for introduction into French literary criticism course. Getting a book like this while you're still just an ignorant freshman is really, really awful. Yes, I know that this book is actually great and Compagnon did a great job covering main points of literary criticism - it took about four or five other books to explain that to me and I definitely do not like that.
