Not since Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49 has there been as unsettling a fictional journey into the Southern California state of mind as Michael Drinkard's Disobedience . It is a darkly funny and unhingingly brilliant multigenerational novel set in the orange groves of Redlands, California, one that shuttles effortlessly from the late nineteenth century to the day after tomorrow.
Another book that was pulled off the shelf during one of my babysitting stints. good thing the people I was working for had good taste in books. Turns out they went to high school with this guy, and the kids dad taught Drinkard to smoke pot out of an apple.
phht, what a world. This book is the most hidden of gems. I bought it because it was a buck and they mention T.P in the synopsis. I'm so glad I decided to try it when I did. Utterly unique, totally engaging and memorable. Sincere, disturbing. Perfectly structured and paced. This book needs to be read by more people. I've got a bumbling review on my channel if further interested...: )
