Survival of the fittest, but what is a human against the ancient creatures of old?

All Sophia wanted to do was curl up with a good book and a cup of tea. Instead, she’s dragged out for a night of partying.

In a single day, Sophia's life takes a drastic turn; abandoned and left for dead, she thinks things can’t get any worse, only to encounter lurking horrors in the forest’s shadows.

Stumbling across a group with questionable morals, she thinks maybe she can survive this… That is until a mythological creature attacks, one that should have stayed in the myths and legends of Ancient Greece.

Given Sophia's limited skills, her chances of survival in a forest teeming with creatures are low. She is the fawn in a pack of wolves, and they’re starting to close in.

But will Sophia defeat the odds? Or will she fade into just another story?

Firstly, I want to say a big thank you to Keira Julie for sending me an ARC of her debut novel in exchange for an honest review! This was incredibly accomplished, and I'm so excited to see where your journey takes you next. I do just have to clarify that I likely wouldn't have picked up this book if I knew it was an adult fantasy, as I don't tend to choose those; this is largely due to a mistake in marketing, as the book is currently, as of the day I'm writing this review, being pushed as a YA fantasy. Objectively, the book is NA at the very least, certainly not YA. I couldn't recommend it to any teenage readers.

'Uncorrupted' is a vibrant novel, the first in a proposed series, following a shy, introverted bookworm as she's abducted from her small English village after a house party gone wrong, and turns up in a strange jungle, surrounded by strangers. Slowly, said strangers introduce themselves as killers, and our protagonist learns she's different from them at least in one crucial way: she has never, and would never, kill anybody. Or... has she? Why else would she be here?

The book follows the group as they journey through the jungle, some of them dying along the way, faced with all sorts of terrible creatures. It weaves Greek mythology with classic fantasy tropes, with a twist I unfortunately did guess, and a subtle romantic subplot. Some of the writing was really lovely, and I adored certain characters - or maybe just one character - the friendly Idir!

The main bulk of the plot fell flat for me, but perhaps mostly due to its lack of direction and clear structure or pace; this, again, is likely due to the author's choice to write it as a YA novel, rather than levelling up the gore, romance and complex world-building to the level an adult fantasy would instead employ. The characters are all over eighteen and incredibly mature, verging on dull, the romance between two consenting adults, which is already enough to label the book as a new adult fantasy, or an adult fantasy. The gore, sexual tension and extremely frequent use of cursing also, for me, felt inappropriate in a YA novel. I'm certain a younger teen would struggle to relate to the protagonist and others.

Personally, I would have loved more characterisation, background, dialogue and context, with shorter descriptions of the action, which I found myself skipping. Some developmental work, particularly on pacing, would have made a huge difference to this! Sophia was a rather bland and clichéd character, so some more characterisation throughout the series will be welcome.

I'm absolutely not the target audience for this book, as, like I said, adult fantasy would never usually be something I'd reach for. I'm certain there are readers, particularly those with an interest in Greek mythology, who would love this plot, especially once its marketing has been tweaked and the correct readers are sought out! I adored the premise and how vivid all of the scenes felt to me, and I support Keira Julie wholeheartedly on her journey into self-publishing. If this review interested you at all, I recommend you check the book out!

Congratulations on finishing your debut novel, Keira, and getting it ready to publish - I'm so excited to see where you go next!

A big thanks to the author Keira Julie for letting me read this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

This book was absolutely insane in the best way. I really didn’t know what was going to happen, I just hoped Sophia would stay safe. I don’t understand how she coped, I think if I would be abducted and dropped on an island with a bunch of murderers and have to survive together on a very dangerous island I would just lay down to meet my inevitable doom.

All the characters had very interesting personalities and backgrounds. I think it’s a very smart move to have Cole blooded killers but also the ones who killed once for revenge or following orders in the military. It shows that not everything is black and white.

The story itself was very interesting, how do you survive on an island with mythological creatures who are actively trying to kill you. But not only that, you also have to be careful of the killers with who you’re trying to survive.

The ending had me shocked, everything happened so fast. There were a few deaths that really hurt my soul. I won’t give to much away because I want my review to remain spoiler free but shit I really didn’t see that coming.

After finishing I went back to read the first few chapters again and it really was interesting to see the little clues or things you wouldn’t think anything of reading it the first time. All in all I really enjoyed this book and I can’t wait to read the next part. I really want to know what’s going to happen next.

ARC review - YA fantasy. Greek mythology. Found self.

Sophia, is on her way home from a party when she’s taken against her will and wakes up in an unforgiving forest, surrounded by ruthless survivors.

Sophia wants nothing more than to curl up into the comfort of her sofa, in her quiet town of Surrey, and read until the sun sets. Unfortunately for her, she’s awakens on an island to endure a gruelling challenge against life and death. Sophia must survive, not only her given company, but the creatures she’s only read about in books.

I could not help but love Sophia. So many times, I would have rolled on my back and awaited what I supposed to be inevitable death, but Sophia kept finding it within her to keep fighting. She fought, with all odds stacked against her. Sophia defies instinct in order to delve beyond the surface level and builds some of the most wholesome relationships (which I shall continue to grieve) with the most unlikely companions.

✔️Fantastical world building. Fast paced. Continual character development. Action packed. The most insane plot twists.

Keira has created a captivating first book in what I hope to be, at the very least, a duology. I look forward to reading more from this blossoming author in the future.

Ahhhh, what a book! Uncorrupted had me on the edge of my seat throughout the book. It gave me hunger games meets Percy Jackson vibes! The world building and descriptive language throughout made it super easy for me to picture myself there with Sophia, some descriptions were a tad repetitive though. I didn't know what to expect next at any point through the book, and now I need book 2 in my life!!!!

First of all, thank you to Keira Julie for giving me the opportunity to be an ARC reader. It was my first time doing so, and it was very exciting!

The book is very well written, the story is captivating, and the characters are endearing (especially Idir). The world-building shows incredible imagination on the author’s part. All the references to Greek mythology are well thought out. I haven’t read Percy Jackson, so I can’t say if it’s in the same spirit, but I definitely recognized the Hunger Games vibe, with all the dangers surrounding Sophia, whether from her companions or the world around her.

Sophia, the main character, goes through an impressive character development, and despite the doubts and hardships, she remains brave and determined. The other characters are also very well written. You can really feel all kinds of emotions for them, especially hatred (for some of them).

The descriptions of the settings were wonderfully done, I could easily picture the world of the book in my mind. The action scenes were written in a way that completely drew me in, making me want to turn page after page.

Congratulations to Keira Julie on an incredible debut novel! I can’t wait to read the second book in the series!

The first scene! Omg, such a hook. I read this in two sittings because it had me in such a chokehold.

I was so intrigued by this whole situation. I wanted to know more about each of the characters and what is going on back home in response to them vanishing. The pacing of this was so good. My heart was pounding the whole way through. And with that ending I don’t think it’ll stop until after book two is out.

I did not like Emma and I’m like her even less after why the fmc was on the island was revealed. I’m so glad the fmc worked out what a bad friend and bad person Emma was. The whole plot was so clever and had these incredible full circle moments which showed the importance of the first few chapters.

I absolutely loved this and I’m so glad I got a chance to ARC read it. And I need a physical copy. The cover is gorgeous.

Thank you Keira Julie for the advanced readers copy of Uncorrupted. This book had me hooked from the beginning and it was so hard to put it down

💠killers who are taken to an "abandoned island
💠Greek mythological creatures that should not even exist anymore
💠budding relationships that shouldn't make sense but do
💠still grieving for some(not all) of characters that were lost.

This book is what my dream books are made of. Some of the characters can be relatable while some were quite annoying and I wanted to off them myself. I love how she took mythological creatures and turned them into something from your nightmares instead of wanting to learn about them. I feel a kinship with Sophia because I would always rather be reading than socializing. An all and all great book and I can't wait for the continuation of Sophia's journey.

ARC REVIEW - This book is like an epic prologue to the story. You follow a group of misfits on a mysterious island that come up against various trials and beasts whilst they are trying to survive. The main female character is what I think a large percentage of us book girlies would be like if this actually happened to us rather than what we wish we could be like 😂

There are some multi layered characters and a lot of action packed chapters and this book is a great intro to the series

Loved this book!! Action and fantasy are definitely my cup of tea! And this book has plenty of it, I also loved the romance side of things.. there was a lot of characters I felt very attached to and I think it is incredibly written considering I probably shouldn’t be attached to these types of characters.. I think the author is very talented and should be very proud of this exciting story she has created. I cannot wait to read more from her.
