‘Een zinderende vakantiethriller.’ – The Sun

Hello and welcome to my page... You may already know my domestic noir thrillers or perhaps you're curious and not sure which to try first - either way, you're in the right place!

My latest is OUR HOLIDAY, a Sunday Times bestseller, WHSmith Richard & Judy Book Club pick and Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year 2025 nominee. It features my favourite ever love-to-hate characters Perry and Charlotte, second home owners in the idyllic English beach resort of Pine Ridge. It's now in development for the screen - I'll share news on that as soon as I can.

Next up is A NEIGHBOUR'S GUIDE TO MURDER, published in July 2025 (UK) and 2026 (US), available to pre-order now.

Last year I celebrated my 20th anniversary as an author with the news of two prestigious awards for my 90s-set thriller THE ONLY SUSPECT: the Capital Crime Fingerprint Award for Thriller of the Year and the Ned Kelly Award for Best International Crime Fiction. Stay tuned for TV news on that one too - it will be the next of mine to hit our screens!

OUR HOUSE is the one you may know me for as it's now a major four-part ITV drama starring Martin Compston and Tuppence Middleton (watch the full series free on ITVX). This is the novel that turned my career around, winning the 2019 British Book Awards Book of the Year - Crime & Thriller and shortlisted for the Goldsboro Books Glass Bell Award, the Capital Crime Amazon Publishing Best Crime Novel of the Year Award, and the Audible Sounds of Crime Award. It was also longlisted for the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award and the Specsavers National Book Awards. A Waterstones Thriller of the Month, it recently received a Nielsen Bestseller Silver Award for 250,000 copies sold.

A bit about me: I live in a South London neighbourhood not unlike the one in my books, with my husband, daughter and a fox-red Labrador called Bertie who is the apple of my eye. Books, TV and long walks are my passions - and drinking wine in the sun with family and friends. Authors I love include Tom Wolfe, Patricia Highsmith, Barbara Vine, Agatha Christie and Evelyn Waugh. My favourite book is Madame Bovary.

Charlotte and Perry have owned their beautiful cliff top home in Pine Ridge, Dorset for many years and spend all of August in this paradise. This year though, they and Amy and Linus, friends from London and recent purchasers of a small ‘doer upper’ also in Pine Ridge, get an unwelcome reception from the ‘Not Just For August’ crew. It gets a bit angsty to say the least, but the two couples are of the opinion that they’ve worked hard for the second homes so why shouldn’t they enjoy it? They look forward to lazy days and long summer evenings, sipping rosé wine and taking in the glorious views. This year however, will be different as Robbie the leader of the NJFA is on a mission by the end of August things will never ever be the same again.

This is a really good, well written slow burner of a psychological thriller though right from the start there’s clearly bubbling tension simmering away beneath the surface. There are multiple layers and subplots which keep revealing themselves and the author does an excellent job of keeping the ‘plot plates’ spinning and with it my attention. First of all, there is the obvious issue of the arrival of the “grockles” or Blow-Ins with their second homes, often empty for much of the year and the locals who have difficulty acquiring affordable housing. There’s a very good balance between the two and at times there’s a satirical element especially in the acute observations of those at the upper end of the income bracket yet it still manages to pack the necessary punch. There’s some excellent dialogue that keeps reinforcing this. Secondly, as well as the above divide there are other divisions too such as intergenerational ones and in various relationships. These become strained and there are intriguing dynamics in several areas.

Although this is a slow burner from the arrival of the “downs from London” there’s a sense of anxiety and trepidation overhanging all and an on edge sensation with some claustrophobia. Situations escalate, there are double lives being lived, examples of hypocrisy and the tensions evident from the start, begin to escalate with altercations which spiral out of control. It becomes deliciously devious and dangerous, there’s plenty of the stuff fitting the fan and wheels coming off lives as a consequence. The last part of the book is very dramatic, but it’s not OTT.

My only reservation of the book lies in the number of characters that you have to wrap your head around. It’s told from multiple points of view, these I don’t have a problem with, but there are a lot of other characters to get familiar with and one or two that seem to me to be superfluous such as Julien the french visitor staying with Amy and Linus.

Overall though, I really enjoy this as the tone is just right and yet it still manages to highlight a genuine issue. A shout out for the fantastic setting in Dorset which is used really effectively.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to HQ for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

Lord give me strength 😫😫😫

So a summary of this book goes like this:

Charlotte and Perry own a holiday home in Cliff View
Their best friends Amy and Matt buy a second home nearby them
Locals can’t even afford to live in their own village and are annoyed at all these new homeowners
Ensue chaos, drama and a death.

My goodness I have never read any of this author’s work before and I’ve heard she is a very talented writer, but I think I read the wrong one.
This book was a tortoise pace slow burn filled with unlikeable rich entitled characters and I was truly bored throughout.
It was so slow for a book that was so predictable and unnecessary long!
This book exhausted and nearly put me in a slump.

Everyone seems to be writing ‘destination thrillers’ right now, but Louise Candlish just does it better. She’s the Queen of domestic noir, creating characters you love to hate, and hate to love, then putting them in situations that twist and turn like a fairground ride. Sit back on your sun lounger and enjoy 😃

Anyone who knows me knows I love Louise Candlish’s work, I always say it but I would read a shopping list by this author such is her story telling power and brilliance with words

I shall make this a short review and say the story re 2nd home owners in a beautiful Dorset village and the war they have with local residents and each other is a very good story, it is however so character rich that a character index is needed as for the first part of the book you are pretty much in confusion as to who is who as there are just so many of them, it is a complex story….

Some great humour and a good and fair narrative re the foibles, strengths and faults of the younger more offended generation vs the non offended oldies 😊

Not my favourite by a favourite author but that’s ok as am sure it will be other people’s and it was still a good read

I have enjoyed the authors previous novels and the blurb sounded promising. The first quarter of this book sounded interesting but then it went into other scenarios and lots of different characters that unfortunately I couldn’t connect with. This is a slow burn of a story and in end found it too slow for me personally that I couldn’t finish the book. I am quite disappointed to be honest. Although this is fictional, I thought this was more of a political statement than a fictional story. 3 stars from me.

So disappointed in this one from Louise. I found the story totally unbelievable and I disliked the characters so very much. Her books are usually so good but not this one. My thanks to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

2024 is an important year for British author Louise Candlish as it marks the twenty-year anniversary of being a published author. Candlish is known for her ability to deliver domestic suspense novels that focus on social dilemmas. In her latest book Our Holiday, Candlish looks at holiday home problems, which is a very contentious issue in the British press. I appreciated the satirical lens placed on a domestic thriller storyline in this new Louise Candlish tale.

🏖Our Holiday closely follows two families who trade their city lives for relaxing summer breaks at their holiday homes in Dorset. But things take a rather unwanted turn when the sanctuary of their holiday homes becomes interrupted by acts of violence, vandalism and damage. This is just the beginning of a war raging against the wealthy second homeowners of Pine Ridge and those who have been left behind in the housing crisis ripping through the country. What further destruction and menace will occur in the picturesque locale of Pine Ridge?

🏖Louise Candlish has tackled an up-to-the-minute issue prevalent in British society (and no doubt in other places in the world) and woven it into a gripping domestic thriller. Our Holiday opens with quite an explosive bang and it then takes a slow burn method to unveil a web of secrets, lies, dangerous acts, criminal activities, desire, mistrust and hatred. There are tangled relationships and a great deal of greed and envy problems to overcome. What rises above all else is the problems associated with the housing crisis, second home ownership and wealth distribution. Candlish attacks the locals versus outsiders debate when it comes to property ownership with a compelling narrative force. I loved sinking my teeth into the variety of characters presented in this storyline and their related complications. This is one big headache situation tackled well within a domestic crime frame. I didn’t predict the ending too, so big claps to Louise Candlish for keeping me fully occupied from cover to cover.

A well plotted slow burn (sb only initially) suspense thriller with modern day themes that I found very relevant. Once you are introduced to the characters in the first part the story takes off!

Two couples Charlotte and Perry, and Amy and Linus own holiday homes in Pine Ridge but the locals aren’t happy, there’s a shortage of homes in the seaside village while there are many luxury second homes sitting vacant most of the year owned by out-of- towners. There’s a lot of unrest in the community, the locals are priced out of the property market and wow does it come to a head.

The story is told over dual timelines, I loved the varied characters, their secrets and flaws, it had me hooked! The finale was enjoyable and a good twist. Loved the setting and all the dramas going on in Paradise, a brilliant read!

Oh what can I say ? I’m a huge fan of this authour and have loved them all ….i didn’t though find this that great not even good really
I did enjoy the unlikable characters of course she’s great at writing these and the dynamics but I just found it boring and rushed the end as wanted to read something else
Nothing really happens though the first chapter is good and u can imagine the catrosphere well
It’s a good concept and touches on relevant themes but I just found it a bit boring and the the themes quite stereotyped
Louise has done a lot better and it’s still an ok read just not her usual standard of deep rich dynamics and page turning moments
So sorry to give just two stars but I was bored and I never have been before by this authour

I liked this book but I don’t think it was as good as other Candlish reads. Too many characters at once and, what I felt, was an underlying political message, I don’t think this book packed the punch I was expecting.

It took me a while to get into this story. The first few chapters introduce new characters each time which left me rather confused about the different identities. Unfortunately, I could never quite shake this off for the rest of the read, particularly confusing the two wives and their children. I wished the writer had established the characters more before adding different ones to the mix. If that had been the case, I think I would have enjoyed watching them more.

However, undeniably, these are not likeable characters in the slightest. All of them have an air of self-entitlement that rankled with me. Selfishness abounds and I don’t think the locals were much better either. I cringed when watching scenes with Beattie and disliked the example that the parents set: they are hardly ideal role models and are all considerably flawed. In contrast, the locals are all presented as incredibly angry and gunning for a fight. This is shown through their attitude towards the holiday makers who have bought second homes in Pine Ridge. The clash between two types of people with very different backgrounds simmers over the story, reaching a disturbing climax.

At times I really engaged with the narrative. The fact that the story opens with a summerhouse falling into the sea was really shocking and I loved how Candlish only gives slight clues about this story. Instead, readers are taken back several weeks so we see how events build up to this grand finale. This dual timeline aspect meant readers can make some informed judgements about the present narrative, helping to unravel why a summerhouse has ended up in the sea.

The idea of having a second home dominates the narrative. The locals are sick of these tourists swanning in each summer and then leaving their second homes empty for most of the year, whilst they are struggling to find even a rental property. The injustice of this is reinforced when there is news that immigrants are also to be housed nearby, making the protest group – Not Just For August – even more angered. In my opinion, this felt too close to reality because these topics are in the news so much, that it felt like Candlish was critiquing these current affairs. Personally, I would have preferred less of a reflection of daily life; I wanted a bit more escapism to the coast.

Definitely a slow burner, this a complex plot that has a range of characters. None of them are likeable but with the shocking opening, I was definitely hooked. It took me a while to settle into the story and I do think the ending was quite prolonged however, it was a mystery that I wanted to solve and I was really keen to see all the characters have some sort of comeuppance for their actions.

With thanks to HQ and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I have to say, from start to finish, this book was simply B.O.R.I.N.G. Too many characters, too many sub plots, all of the characters were unlikeable.
The news report bits just reminded me of a high school writing class, just not good.
The idea of a NJFA society was stupid and unrealistic (I live in a tourist town) and the twist was lukewarm at best.
I read this book on a long flight, I wouldn't have finished it in any other circumstance.

Charlotte and Perry love their summer home in Pine Ridge on the coast of England, where they vacation in the summer with their son Benedict. Their London friends, Amy and Linus, have also purchased a home there, and they are all looking forward to unwinding together. However, an animated protest group called Not Just for August has assembled in Pine Ridge to protest second-home owners – on the basis that they are driving up housing prices for locals who can barely afford to live there anymore. It starts with throwing tomato sauce and eggs at the homeowners’ cars driving off the ferry and escalates. Passions run high over the month of August and anything could happen.

Louise Candlish is one of my favourite authors and she delivered with Our Holiday! On the surface this could appear to be just a good summer beach read (and it is), but it is much more than that. There is so much here to engage the reader – social tensions, wealth and privilege, the struggles and competing political interests within Pine Ridge, and the laissez-faire parenting style of the Gen-X parents. You may be surprised at some of the characters you end up liking, and the ones you dislike. Interestingly, the thread of alcohol and drug use runs throughout the novel, drawing attention to our assumptions and prejudices about who uses, and abuses, substances. That is the beauty of this novel in my opinion: you can read it as a tense summer thriller and enjoy it at that level; or you can think over the quite enjoyable moments of irony and satire. It might just be my favourite Candlish novel yet!

I do like Louise Candlish's books, but this took me a while to get into - there were a lot of characters, and I kept getting their names mixed up. It's a promising setup, though - the escalating tensions in a south coast seaside town between wealthy second home owners (known locally as DFLs - Down From London) and local people who can't afford any homes at all, let alone second ones.

The action revolves around two of the "DFL" families - Charlotte and Perry, Amy and Linus - with assorted children and friends, along with local activist Robbie and his friend Tate. Over the summer relationships and allegiances form, shift and break, secrets have far-reaching consequences , and ultimately it will all end in death - but whose?

Louise Candlish has a sharp eye for contemporary issues and tensions - crystallised here in the entertaining conflicts between student Tabitha and her boyfriend's father, Perry. Money and class are pervasive themes too, not to mention the differing attitudes to the local housing of migrants.

An engaging read as always.

I love Louise Candlish and I think she is criminally underrated. I know it is all about opinions but there are so many more 'acclaimed' authors who seem to get more publicity and kudos and I can't understand why.

In Our Holiday, we meet two couples, Amy and Linus, and Charlotte and Perry. The book is set over the month of August when the two couples are living in their second homes much to anger of local residents who dislike the impact of second homes on their local community housing.

Like much of Candlish's work, it is set over two dual timelines and we learn of a death but are then taken back and drip fed until the story plays out perfectly.

Poor writing, too many sub plots, at first it feels like the essence of a good writer, having a few different takes on the main plot, but this just felt like the author couldn't think of anything else to write about. ending was predictable and boring, and also a bit of a cop out choosing a minor character to be killed, and it's an accident. Hardly a thriller. Really disappointed with this one. The reference to Lolita was overused and not at all relevant to the scenario or plot.

Our Holiday starts with a beach festival where the revellers witness a house falling off a cliff. Earlier in August, Charlotte and Perry arrive at their luxury beach front property on Pine Ridge. They are not welcomed by some of the locals who resent rich second home owners who only use their houses for the summer while the locals are unable to afford to live in the same area. Robbie and Tate are two of the ring leaders of the group - Not Just For August (NJFA).
Amy and Linus who are neighbours of Charlotte’s in London have brought a neighbouring bungalow and are in the process of doing it up. Despite some animosity between the two husbands, the two families plan to spend a lot of time together throughout their stay, but tensions at times run high.
This is my first book by Louise Candlish (I have quite a few of her back list on my shelves) and I can’t believe it has taken me this long to read her. I enjoyed listening to the audio book of this which has multiple narrators for the different characters which is always great in an audio book. All of the characters have their own secrets and were honestly a pretty unlikable, entitled bunch. I have to say I had sympathy with the NJFA group
A few reviews I read said there were too many characters but I didn’t feel this was the case. I thought Candlish’s observations were spot on and this was a thoroughly entertaining domestic thriller. Perfect for a sunny day at the beach!

Honestly, this book isn’t as great as her previous book. I don’t know whether the start of the book I found bad - too much information, too many characters and chapters introduced broke the passage of the introduction. I also found the plot to be a tad convoluting, the plot wasn’t really my cup of tea. Thought I was going to be on a ride and it didn’t turn out the way I thought it was.

Honestly, if someone were to ask me about the plot and what happens I’ll most likely forget in a couple of days, for me it didn’t have the thrilling, capulsating feel.

PONTOS FORTES:

- escrita simples

- leitura viciante

- enredo original

- suspense crescente

- segredos

- dramas familiares

- reviravoltas

PONTOS FRACOS:

- nada a registar

Rounded down to 3.5 stars.
It was an ok read. Not my favourite of her books but she did mention she has a new publishing team. It's different from her usual. Based on the 2nd home owners and the locals protest about these homes lying empty for most of the year.
Mildly entertaining but not great imo
