At the center of all John Howard Yoder's thought is the scriptural witness, and at the center of the scriptural witness is Christ, the one who "came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near" (Eph. 2:17). This collection of short, accessible studies of key biblical texts provides a wonderful point of entry into Yoder's more difficult theological writings; it can also serve as a guide for a small group Bible study on the theme of Christian peaceableness.
Yoder was a Christian theologian, ethicist, and Biblical scholar best known for his radical Christian pacifism, his mentoring of future theologians such as Stanley Hauerwas, his loyalty to his Mennonite faith, and his 1972 magnum opus, "The Politics of Jesus".
A collection of essays (and even a graduation address!) from Yoder, one of the most prominent religious pacifists I know. While Yoder's prose can get obscure at times, I strongly appreciated his focus on pacifism not as an inherently successful strategy, but as a deep testimony by Christians who acknowledge the higher power of God.
Wow! What a fantastic book on peace! I especially liked how he reflected on a Bible passage in each chapter giving me lots of ideas for future sermons. I was deeply inspired and ended up putting numerous pieces of paper in each chapter to mark places to look at again (because, sigh, its a library book).
