John Herrington was the first enrolled member of a Native nation to go into space as he was a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation.
Herrington was born in Wetumka, Oklahoma, in 1958. Since his father served in the military, his family moved a lot.
From childhood, he liked playing with cardboard box and pretending it was a rocket ship on its way to the moon.
While in college, another student got him interested in flying again as it was his father who introduced him to flying.
After graduating from college, he joined Navy where he became a pilot. Five years later, he became a test pilot for the Navy. When he found out that many test pilots went on to become astronauts, he decided to do the same.
In 1969, he joined NASA. He spent several years training. In 2002, he was picked to go to space. Before his mission, there was a celebration. More than 45 Native nations came.
After retiring from NASA in 2005, he kept himself busy. While biking across US, he stopped by many schools, inspiring students in subjects of science.
