This by far is the greatest book on friendship I have ever read. The importance and necessity of human friendship as the surest way of growing in and experiencing friendship with the Lord. Without my friend, I will never fully know the depth of friendship I can have with the Lord, and I will never fully know and be shown the depth of myself without the love and appreciation of a friend. Only true friendship can really push me to wanting friendship with the Lord.
“A painter expresses his creation on canvas, a poet puts his creation into words and onto paper, even if he does not show it to anyone. But his work does not reach its fullness of being except in appreciation by others. The fullness of every creation is to be know, to be appreciated. The wonderful mystery which is you is not complete until you are appreciated. God has created you as a beautiful masterpiece, a hidden mystery which is not yet fully revealed… Appreciation is the sun which draws forth into blossom and fruitfulness what existed before only as a seed. There are things in us which we do not even know are there until they are drawn forth by someone’s love for us… God is not fully glorified for what he has done in you unless someone like me appreciates you.”
¿Cómo queremos orar y tener una relación con el Señor, si no sabemos ser amigos verdaderos aquí? Me siento LLAMADO a enseñar a otros a ser mejores amigos y a apostarle más a los míos.

So few people live and maintain friendships in the way that Fr. Hinnebusch describes. They don't strive for them, and in the modern age, they're not thought possible. We're losing so much as a result. He describes convincingly how without these fostered friendships with the faithful, we can never strive to be who God made us to be, and we can't know Him as fully as we ought. It's an entirely different way of seeing other people and relating to them.
Lovely to read this again after reading it during SY on Fr. Brady’s recommendation. Definitely a top 5 spiritual classic (for me personally) that I could read over and over again.
“But just as Joseph, even while he decreased, received Mary again from God, to be loved tenderly and cherished as his wife, so too the celibate is given many persons to love, and carries on a mission of universal love, mediating God’s own love.”
