A comic book writer and erstwhile artist. He has won critical acclaim (including five Eisner Awards) and is one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics. For over eight years Bendis’s books have consistently sat in the top five best sellers on the nationwide comic and graphic novel sales charts.

Though he started as a writer and artist of independent noir fiction series, he shot to stardom as a writer of Marvel Comics' superhero books, particularly Ultimate Spider-Man.

Bendis first entered the comic world with the "Jinx" line of crime comics in 1995. This line has spawned the graphic novels Goldfish, Fire, Jinx, Torso (with Marc Andreyko), and Total Sell Out. Bendis is writing the film version of Jinx for Universal Pictures with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron attached to star and produce.

Bendis’s other projects include the Harvey, Eisner, and Eagle Award-nominated Powers (with Michael Avon Oeming) originally from Image Comics, now published by Marvel's new creator-owned imprint Icon Comics, and the Hollywood tell-all Fortune and Glory from Oni Press, both of which received an "A" from Entertainment Weekly.

Bendis is one of the premiere architects of Marvel's "Ultimate" line: comics specifically created for the new generation of comic readers. He has written every issue of Ultimate Spider-Man since its best-selling launch, and has also written for Ultimate Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men, as well as every issue of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Ultimate Origin and Ultimate Six.

Brian is currently helming a renaissance for Marvel’s AVENGERS franchise by writing both New Avengers and Mighty Avengers along with the successful ‘event’ projects House Of M, Secret War, and this summer’s Secret Invasion.

He has also previously done work on Daredevil, Alias, and The Pulse.

“Bendis!”

“Yes, sir!”

“Got another assignment for you on Guardians of the Galaxy. We need to spice things up. So put Venom on the team. And maybe Captain Marvel. They’re thinking about putting her in a movie so we might as well start linking them together. I’m thinking some kind of story where the team gets captured and separated by their enemies and go through hell. Those fan boys love it when we torture the good guys.”

“Uh…but sir….I was really hoping that I might finally get to just tell a Guardians story that was about ….uh…the Guardians.”

“What are you talking about? You’ve done over a dozen issues on this new series. You’re writing Guardians stories all the time.”

“Well, you’d think so, sir, but actually I haven’t had a lot of time to do much with just the Guardians. First, we had the story with Iron Man running around with them for a while.”

“Excellent crossover there. Those Marvel studio movies are a gravy train with biscuit wheels, and we need to sop up every last drop!”

“Yes, sir. And that actually turned out to be a pretty fun storyline, but then you had me bring Angela on the team because…. Uh, why did we bring Angela on the team? It really doesn’t make a lot of sense.”

“I’ve told you before, Bendis. To piss off Todd McFarlane. And that reminds me, we haven’t had enough Angela lately. Be sure to put her in the next story, too.”

“Uh…but sir, after Angela I had to do tie-ins to the Infinity event and then a crossover with the X-Men…”

“You’re acting like this is something different than the usual way we do any comic, Bendis.”

“Oh, I know it’s how most of our stuff gets done these days, sir, but it’s just that with the popularity of the Guardians movie, wouldn’t it be good if we did some stories that just focused on the characters that all the fans know? Didn’t we launch this new book that featured those five heroes to capitalize on that? So I’m a little confused as to why we can’t just do at least a few comics that feature the team working together without a bunch of other characters? And separating the team for a story line? Sir, I’m sure you’re aware that one of the things I do best is writing banter among superheroes, and that’s a little hard to do if they’re all scattered around the galaxy getting their brains beaten in. Plus, we’re already planning that Original Sin event so that will be another time I have to write for a big storyline rather than just the Guardians title, sir.”

“Crossovers, Bendis! Crossovers! That’s what the public wants. Whether its characters crossing over or those giant storylines, that’s what these nerds pay for, and that’s what we’re gonna give ‘em. Why do you think the Avengers movies make more than the solo ones? It’s because they’re all together at the same time. The movies producers know that. Have you seen the line-up for Captain America: Civil War? I think they got more characters in that one movie than we had in the story we did in the comics. So we will keep churning out crossovers and sticking random characters in other books whether it makes sense or not.”

“Sir, I just worry that at some point the fans would like a coherent story line that features the actual team that is the title of the book.”

“Ah, don’t worry about it. From what I hear we’re gonna blow all this shit up in Secret Wars so you’ll be retconning it all anyhow.”

Warning: There may be spoilers.

This was still a lot of fun for me, but I'm new to the Guardians.
Maybe if I had been a longtime fan of this cosmic group I would feel differently, because I see a lot of reviews that are less than complimentary toward this volume.
However, I'm a cheap date. *shrugs*

You get the 1st issue of GotG, which sets up Star-Lord's antagonistic relationship with his father.
J'son = Evil Emperor
I kinda like this guy, so I hope they kiss and make up at some point.

description

Ok, so the Guardians are expanding, and apparently there are a couple of new teammates added to the line-up. I actually really like this, because with more characters, it seems a little more like DnA's run.
Captain Marvel swoops in and saves Peter's butt from *spoilery stuff*.

description

And (surprise!) Venom is also on the team.

description

Ok, he's the Flash Thompson version of Venom, and he's mostly a good guy now. I really enjoyed reading his story in the issue of Amazing Spider-man, which is included in this volume (along with the 1st issue of Captain Marvel).

The only non-good thing about this one is that not a lot happens. It sort of has a filler-like quality to it. The team gets picked off one by one, separated, and they all sort of have to face their mortal enemies alone.
At the end they are (mostly) reunited, and once again on the run together.

I'm still giving it the 4 Stars For Fun rating, and I'm hopeful that the next volume will get a little more meaty. Between this, and the last volumes' crossover with the X-men, I'm ready for the Guardians to kick some ass on their own. You know, with a full volume to themselves.
Just sayin'.

A few parts were good, but main storyline was a boring mess and artworks just not as good as previous volumes ones.

Inter-characters dynamics were the best part of this series, so really a not good idea make Angela disappear (luckly her and Gamora are reunited again in the end) to add Agent Venom and Cap. Marvel to do essentially nothing but for getting lost in space and a crappy deus ex machina rescue...

Such a shame because I was loving a lot this run.

Peter Quill's father J-Son King of Spartax has had enough of his son and the Guardians of the Galaxy. So he has them dealt with and distributed to the other cosmic powers.

Guardians Disassembled is like vanilla ice cream. Just plain old vanilla ice cream. No chocolate syrup, no sprinkles, and no cone.
description
It's like your parents telling you that you can go get ice cream, but only vanilla and no toppings. I mean yeah it's still ice cream, but it just isn't the same as any other flavor or vanilla doused in chocolate syrup and sprinkles.
description
I mean doesn't that look a million times better than plain old vanilla ice cream?

So the whole story is about the Guardians being defeated and disassembled. In some cases literally.
description
description
That's it. Nothing more complex about it.

One interesting thing I couldn't help but notice, was that Star Lord was redesigned to match his movie counterpart. Generally I'd say that's a mistake, but with the movie doing significantly better than Guardians of the Galaxy ever did in the comics it makes perfect sense. What I don't get is why they changed his gun too. I liked the old design better, the new one reminds me of one of the guns from the first Halo game.

Guardians Disassembled felt phoned in to me. It really didn't come across that well and I've seen Bendis do far better with the previous volumes.

I’m always floored when I read a Brian Bendis comic, not because they’re so good (they’re usually always average at best) but because he’s able to string together book-length “stories” with almost nothing of importance happening to anyone or even going through the trouble of constructing a plot!

The subtitle of this volume, Guardians Disassembled, IS the plot. The Guardians of the Galaxy are separated from one another and then they’re not. A lot of loud nonsense happens in between though so the Marvel faithful will be pleased with all the colourful lights and familiar faces popping up.

Bendis’ Guardians series started off pretty well but at this point it’s become quite messy. This is technically Volume 3 but it’s the fourth book in the series (counting The Trial of Jean Grey) and this book in particular is a smorgasbord of random issues. Besides GotG #14-17, there’s the 2014 Free Comic Book Day issue, Groot’s Tale by Andy Lanning, a Guardians 3000 (I think) short by Dan Abnett, and, because they’re now part of the Guardians lineup for some reason and I suppose they need intros, Captain Marvel #1 and 8 pages from Amazing Spider-Man #654 featuring Flash Thompson’s first appearance as Agent Venom. Phewf!

Despite that seeming like enough for a single volume, there’s not a whole lot to say about them all. Captain Marvel and Agent Venom are the latest Marvel characters to join the Guardians after Tony Stark left as suddenly as he appeared. Carol Danvers is in space because… still wondering about that one, while Flash has been sold the gig as a “tour of duty” by Stark, playing to Flash’s military side. Uh… ok? I suppose the symbiote is from space...

Star Lord and King J’Son continue bickering about how Star Lord doesn’t think much of his father abandoning him and his mother (boy, is this getting old) while Drax fights someone, Gamora fights someone, Groot’s thrown onto some planet to do nothing, and Rocket’s made a prisoner. There’s a lot of pointless chatter and a lot of arbitrary action, because those are two things Bendis does really well, but nothing I’d call a story, let alone a good story.

Nick Bradshaw’s art is absolutely fantastic throughout, very detailed, very nice to look at. I loved his work on Jason Aaron’s Wolverine and the X-Men Volume 2 which had Logan and Quentin Quire go into a space casino, so he’s definitely well-suited to the alien environs demanded of the Guardians series. Given the number of issues included, there are also a lot of artists drawing pages too like Cameron Stewart, Jason Masters, Michael Oeming, David Marquez, and Todd Nauk, though as a whole this is one great-looking book.

I’d really like it if this Guardians series actually had a story but as long as Bendis is in the driving seat, that ain’t gonna happen. Going by his other Marvel titles, the guy is pleased as punch to tread water for YEARS so settle in for this volume to repeat itself many more times while he’s the writer. Guardians Disassembled - were they ever assembled to begin with?

This would be a good jumping on point for a new reader. It's a good introduction to the core characters, while adding Venom to the mix. Not that there's much teamwork happening, because the group gets ambushed and separated almost immediately. For the most part, this works rather well. The separate perils they face suit each of them, and they handle themselves fairly well. My only thing is that they all get out too easily. There's a lot of "in the nick of time", a lot more than I would like. That said, I really liked the way that Peter handled his father. That was the highlight of the book. And the storyline teased in the annual at the end of the book is something that I think I would like to read.

Loved some parts, some not so much. The Guardians being disassembled is actually the biggest flaw because the team dynamic is what makes them great. Nevertheless some interesting origin stories and another appearance from Captain Marvel. We're also introduced to the newest recruit Agent Venom; a character I'm not that familiar with so I enjoyed getting to know him. But I still wish we could get a Guardians story without shoehorning other characters in. The movie, though different, proved that these characters can hold their own with audiences, and I really want to see them and their banter while kicking ass, not introducing yet another character to the team each time.

There's a preview style introduction to the new series Guardians 3000, a sort of dystopian Guardians/Avengers which seems pretty cool, and the snippit we got was actually a fair bit more interesting that the main storyline of the Guardians in this volume.

My biggest problem with this particular volume is the artwork/artist switch mid fight scene to a totally jarring and out of place style that in my opinion was (and forgive the lack of constructive criticism here) just plain ugly. Up until now the artwork has been great, way above average and perfectly fitting. Then that happened mid scene and then changed back again. It was just odd.

But of course I am a Guardians addict and I will continue to collect the series.

Hmm...

I liked parts of it, but I also thought it was odd. Who does something as stupid as broadcast the execution of someone, then leaves cameras running when shit goes sour?

Angela shows up nearly at the end, so I've learned nothing about her except that she's just another Gamora without personality. Also, why can she kick the Badoon ass, but Gamora can't until she arrives?

Dead didn't beat Gladiator in Trial of Jean Grey, why would it work here?

The Rocket and Groot stuff is more interesting...

Peter and J'son is odd, because I didn't think he was so stupid. J'son that is...

Why does Capt. Marvel just show up? Is it the TV thing? I guess so...

I liked Venom and Flash with Drax and the potential of understanding the symbiote more, that was a tasty treat. I also like how they make Avengers do a tour with the Guardians.

Art was off and on...some great some good some...meh I guess so.

I don't think I missed a ton without reading Vol. 2 but I will read it when the library gets it in...I would actually like to see them as a team, but the title did warn me.

I loved how smart the Kree supreme intelligence was and practical...we shall see where that comes back to bite the Guardians, and I know it will...

Decent, but potential is being wasted...I feel like they keep losing momentum so they can be inserted into all the event books...we shall see...

Also, it just dawned on me....does DC think that Green Lantern New Guardians is their GotG comparison title? Because that would be hilariously sad. Anne might be the only one who knows what I'm talking bout...

I keep the faith for this series, there's still enough good over bad, but starting to feel like not enough is going on and they're just spinning wheels?

Good main story with alot of filler and the unnecessary addition of Venom (really why?). It's like Marvel doesn't believe the guardians can just carry the series. Sure they are the most entertaining team Marvel has but they just don't get a chance to consistently shine.

Ok, so this run on the guardians is my first. And I have been really enjoying it. But, sadly I didn’t really like this one as much as the rest. I dunno, something just felt missing for me.

This run has been heavily interrupted by events, crossovers and more. And this one is not an exception . Poor Bendis, just can’t get a break. This time, we just have to have Venom join the guardians. And I guess, captain marvel. I mean, before these crossovers haven’t really bothered me, because bendis was able to keep the story going. Even if, it keeps getting interrupted. But this, idk it felt a bit forced to me. Iron man, is just like, “Yeah, so Venom is going to join your team, Got it?”. And then he kinda just tags a long for the rest of the volume. And the way captain marvel was included wasn’t great either, she just flys through a window. It is never brought up how she got there.

The art, was also not as good as it has been. It feels like a very big downgrade. It’s very cartoony, and I am not a fan of the expressions. They just look really ugly.

There, was definitely some good stuff too. As always, I love seeing J-son, and all the political troubles that comes along with that. And I have to say, it’s quite fun seeing the whole galaxy basically turn on the guardians. Seeing Gamora and Angela interact is always fun.

There is also a Captain marvel issue and a Spider-Man issue. I think I found the right issue on marvel unlimited for captain marvel. And it was pretty good. Now, I’m considering checking out that series. Although it had nothing to do with the guardians so maybe I didn’t find the right one. :/ For the Spider-Man issue, I was not able to find it so no comment on that.

Overall I would still recommend, even if it’s not as great as the rest of the series.

This was quite a fun story!

It starts with the Guardians being captured by various factions like Star-Lord on Spartax, Rocket experimented on by Kree and Groot on the homeworld of Rigel-8 of the Brood and so they are disassembled and its upto Angela and Captain Marvel to rescue their friends and also Agent Venom has joined the fray and its such a great story seeing this team diassembled and then coming together in such an epic fashion and also showing the horrors of the Galactic council though my fav was Drax vs Gladiator!

Its a good volume and has like origin stories for both Venom and Cap M and like how they joined guardians and has a cute origin story for Groot and like shows the downfall of J'son also and the heroic nature of Star-Lord. Its a very deep volume and shows the Guardians and their nature and who they really are, introspective one might say. The art is pretty good too though it fluctuates quite a bit. Its a good one time read.

Guardians Disassembled. The third volume in the Marvel Now! run, technically the fourth as it takes place after the Guardians of the Galaxy/All New X-Men crossover book The Trail of Jean Grey. Which I highly recommend you read as some of the events there are referenced here.

However Guardians Disassembled also works as a fantastic jumping on point for those that want to check out this team. It will also please fans that have been following from volume one: Cosmic Avengers.

The book starts off with a nice in universe recap of events so far and quick intro to each member. This information is given to us via Tony Stark to Flash Thompson aka Agent Venom. It also goes some way to answer why Tony went awol during the Angela volume and didn’t rejoin the team.

The Disassembled storyline is a great way to explore individually each of the Guardians, including new member Agent Venom. We also get the return of Star-Lord, Rocket, Groot, Drax, Gamora, and Angela. Plus another new addition to the team: Captain Marvel!

We get some political intrigue, especially with Star-Lord’s dad issues, and how they tie in on a galactic scale.

Apart from the main storyline, this graphic novel also has some other stories to fill up the volume. This includes origins for Groot and Agent Venom, the introduction of Carol Danvers new mantle as Captain Marvel, plus a story set in the future with another Guardians of the Galaxy team.

Overall a fun continuation of the Guardians story. It is great for those familiar with the characters and those new. I look forward to getting round to reading the rest of this series.

The extra stories at the end help flesh out the new members of the team without having to track down their own respective stories.

The only downsides for me being: the main story itself is short compared to previous entries in the series; the art style varies a lot, and that’s without taking into account the stories at the end.

The team are separated and captured! But then (spoiler!) they escape and re-unite. And that's about it. Still firmly and frustratingly inferior to the film, the Abnett/Lanning comics which inspired it, and Bendis' own best work.

It's not that this book is terrible, but there's certainly little good about it. Nick Bradshaw's art is generally great. That's about it. Lots of heavy-handed exposition, lots of repeated character beats from earlier in the series, throw in an ableist joke and some pointless wheel-spinning and you've got a volume.

After a strong start Bendis’ GOTG starts to feel overstuffed and tired. Not sure if it was Marvel’s or Bendis’ idea to bring Venom on board but he adds nothing to the team. There was potential but he feels restrained here. The introduction of Captain Marvel is… fine. But only 3 volumes in and it feels like the Guardians are taking a back seat in their own series.

With the film version being hugely praised it is good to see the comics series remain strong at the same time. This volume of Guardians of the Galaxy sees Peter Quill/Starlord facing up his royal father as the rest of the Guardians are sold to the various alien races of the Marvel cosmic universe.

It begins with the Free Comic Book Day story, which both acts as an introduction to the characters and a way of introducing Venom to the team. It is a good introduction for new readers and I think that Venom really fits into the team well. The symbiote is alien of course and it makes sense to develop the character of Flash Thompson after his stint in Thunderbolts and his recent appearance in Superior Spider-Man.

The main story is rather a good one and separating the team works surprisingly well for a team-based book. The Starlord storyline is the main focus, finally giving us the big father/son confrontation that has been coming in the series for a while. The rest of the team are sold to alien races and have to use all their skills to try and survive. Also popping up to help out Rocket, Groot, Gamora, Drax and Venom are Angel of death Angela and Captain Marvel.

Also included in this volume are some stories by the earlier Guardians writers (Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning) to celebrate the comic books 100th issue. Abnett's is particularly good and sets up the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy 3000 series.

The artwork here is hit and miss. The problem is that there is no consistency, with different artists doing pages here and there and a general feeling of lack of cohesion on the art side of things. It would be great if they could use one artist and at least stick with them for the volume.

All in all though an excellent volume which is the perfect jumping on point for fans of the film.

Unfortunately, the Guardians comic has been mediocre since Bendis took over, with the biggest problem being a badly fractured narrative, broken up by events, specials, crossovers, and a constant turnover of Earth-connected team members. This volume continues with that trend.

The actual plot line is horribly thin. Spartax kidnaps the team and they fight against their new oppressors. Often characters only get two pages in an issue, and pretty much nothing happens. The"disassembly" was clearly a big plot requirement, and so was their reunion. It felt like four issue of treading water.

Besides that, we get an intro to Venom that was mostly dull recap, an intro to Guardians 3001 that belongs in the 3001 comic, and most bizarrely non-Guardians comics about Venom and Captain Marvel, because they're the newest team members to unwelcomely intrude their way into the comic.

If this volume had just been the four core Guardians issues, it would have been a poorly told story. But with all the rest, it's just another broken volume of Guardians that doesn't go anywhere.

This was pretty disappointing. I really liked the start of this series, but the excitement died down pretty quickly. I mean, half of this is the entertaining GotG story, and the other half was comprised of an issue about Groot's origin, an issue from Captain Marvel, and then an issue about Venom. It's pretty obvious that we are at the tail end of this run. But one of my biggest peeves about this is that they switched artists in the middle of the last GotG issue. That's the first time I've ever seen an artist change within an issue instead of having different artists alternate issues. But it wouldn't have been such a problem if the new art hadn't been so unattractive.

A marked improvement over the previous volume. As the title would seem to indicate, the Guardians have been disassembled and captured by various baddies, all orchestrated of course by Star Lord's dick of a father. The inevitable escape/rescues are awesome! This also includes:
- The Guardians of the Galaxy...of the future!
- Goot's origin story! And it's all that I hoped it would be (or is it wood be? Wah, wah!)
- Agent Venom's origin story! I'm sorry, but he's great.
- Captain Marvel #1 for good measure. I'm a big fan of hers.

Glad to see this series getting back on track after a shaky volume 2.

The Guardians of the Galaxy continues to flourish under Bendis' trademark dry wit style. While the artwork wasn't as good in some other GOG titles, it's ok. As far as the story? Not bad.

The Guardians are all split up and going through their own adventures as they try to get together. Each guardian has their own little story as to what they have been up to, as they are trying to get back together. There is even a cool Groot "origin" story that I enjoyed.

Not m,uch to say about this one- just a collection of stories that are all linked in that they lead to the Guardians coming together in the end. An enjoyable little read for any Guardians fan.

Incredibly bloated package...this story could have been told in half the number of issues. And again, Marvel cannot have a book be done by any one creative team, so they have fill-in artists pop in in the middle of a page or scene, ignoring what the other artist has drawn: Peter Quill in shorts, now pants; Carol not wearing a mask, Carol now wearing her mask, etc. SLOPPY. I can say that Bradshaw's work is perfectly suited for this book. But it seems like his pace is not suited for a monthly book.

The Guardians story was pretty good, and I liked the Venom origin story fine too. There were several stories in this volume that had nothing to do with the story arc, as far as I could tell, and I wasn't sure why they were included. It gave the volume as a whole a scattered feel.

The Guardians are split up by different fractions grabbing them all due to Starlord's wondeful father.

Oh and Flash Thompsons Venom joins the gang for a bit.

Overall having the guardians separated really doesn't help this series. The best moments are them together, so having their own missions and failures, and trying to survive is just okay. None of it feels scary because we know they'll all make it out.

I will say the moments with Gamora and Angela are wonderful, as are Rocket scared of being experimented on again, and Captain Marvel has some really fun moments too. Overall, it's a decent adventure but probably weakest storyline so far.
