A great collection of essays, though focused almost exclusively in English folk dance. Though not the explicit focus, much of the most interesting topics dealt with ideas of and in relation to revival. Of particular interest to me were Steve Coursin's sword dancing article, as well as the final two articles discussing the early uk folk revival. News to me was that Rolf Gardenier, a founder of the all-male Morris Ring, was a fascist who envisioned it as a "communion rite of clubs and secret societies, of lazy rascals, roisterers and scallywags, of princes among these… The men's dance will return to the men, and ever-new, evolving, fertile tradition... The Morris will become itself again, the dance of men, sworn to manhood, fiery ecstasy, ill, magic and fertility."
He was basing it on sword dance scholar (and nazi supporter Richard Wolfram's idea of Männerbünd, men's secret societies.
So yeah. The Morris ring still sucks.
