"What! No Pudding?" is a short story collection which takes its title from a tale featuring Professor S. Fiendish, and his best friend, Harold Harold Seal.
Other stories include "Bill the Dragon and the Defenestrated Bede", "Penelope, Queen of the Dole Queue", "Not Another Book Club", "The Thomas Clown Affair", and the longest of the stories,"Turf Wars".
"Turf Wars" begins with the premise that there really are faeries at the bottom of the garden. What if there is a faery for every garden? And what happens when Garden Faeries fight?
It's getting a bit weird out there, amongst the pansies and the periwinkle.
These stories made me chuckle. I'm particularly fond of Penelope, Queen of the Dole Queue. Sometimes it seems as if people in stories just don't live in the same world as us, but in this story Sheila North drags a mythical character kicking and screaming into reality. When Odysseus clears off on his round the world voyage, Penelope struggles to make ends meet, and soon finds herself pondering just how to answer the question about marital status on the benefit application form. Turf Wars similarly blends reality and fantasy, in an improbable but oh-so-entertaining account of garden fairies running wild in a South Yorkshire backwater. Quirky, funny and feisty, this is a story collection with a difference. Oh, and it's a quick read too!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this anthology. The stories are wittily written and are perfect for those times when you have only a few minutes to yourself and want to engulf yourself in a completely different world. I think my favourite is 'The Parker is Mightier than the Biro.' I chuckled all the way through this one, and come to think of it, I chuckled my way through all of the others too. Each is distinct and is complete in itself, so there's no feeling of 'think I've read something else just like that!' at all, as can happen with anthologies. A great read and I totally loved the artwork on the cover too. I would heartily recommend this book to anyone.
If you’re the sort of person who likes quirky unpredictability then you’ll enjoy this short story collection. With just a hint of darkness, these are sharp witty and out of the ordinary. I found that they flipped my views of the world somewhat at times.
If these were sweets they would be Sour Rainbow Twists. The author 'shoves' you into each story and it takes a few seconds to acclimatise yourself but then once you’re in you’re on a really interesting and colourful journey.
Definitely interested in reading anything else she writes.
