Haven City #7

Alpha's Gamble

Rate this book
Davis Harrison ruins things. He was supposed to form a pack and lead as alpha, but that future felt like a cage, so he paved his own path as a gambler who now owes money to the mob. Problem? Yeah. Big time. Especially when repaying old debts puts Davis and everyone he cares about in danger.

Enter Davis’s best friend and omega wolf, Ken Isben. Ken promised himself not to get involved with Davis and his schemes – that ship sailed a long time ago. Ken has a life, a home and a steady job. But every instinct tells Ken that Davis is his mate, and if he’s not there to pick up the pieces, who will?

But helping a friend in need is harder than it seems when that friend is as sexy as Davis. Even if Davis claims he’s straight that doesn’t keep the charming alpha from getting close to Ken in every way possible – igniting hidden desires and rekindling a lust Ken thought he got over years before.

The line between friends and lovers blurs, but is it enough to heal their wounds, repair their broken pack and fall in love?

Was worried I wouldn't connect with this one because it's entirely new characters but damned if friends-to-lovers doesn't get me every time. Especially estranged friends. Wow. Hits my feels. Will we get to see Tyler ungrumpify? Dunno. Enjoyed seeing cameos of the gang (literally). Honestly surprised with how much I'm enjoying this series as a whole.

Alpha's Gamble

A gambler, a law abiding businessman and a long lost brother what could possibly go wrong?

Davis returns home after a significant absence that let his boyfriend brokenhearted and his brother lost. He's not exactly a sight for soar eyes and really an unwelcome blast from the past. But this time Davis sets out to prove that he's back, loyal and dependable.

This was a great book and I loved all the characters and their development as the novel unfolded! What a great way these stories are building on a bigger story yet to come!

This book just didn't work for me at all. I didn't like either main character or the plot.

Here's what I wrote when I was 29 percent through: Normally I sympathize with a character who is experiencing unrequited love, like Ken is in this book. Except this time around I can't, because of who he's in love with. Davis is a complete smarmy asshole, and having him, a straight guy, give a blow job to Ken, his gay friend -- who thinks Davis is his mate! -- as an *apology* for being an asshole just makes him a bigger asshole. If I hadn't paid money for this book, I would DNF right here.

At 78 percent: Davis has done nothing, literally nothing, to show he's changed. He is just constantly an asshole. I have no idea what Ken is thinking. At this point, Davis is still referring to what is going on between him and Ken as "their friendship."

Basically, Davis being a total dick for 15 years is forgiven by Ken with some sex. No thanks.

This plot makes no sense to me. We are very familiar with Jin, from the last couple books. Why would Jin ever rely on some guy he doesn't know who has proven himself untrustworthy and a runner (Davis) to find out info about drugs from a rival gang? And really, they already know where the drugs are and have known it for a while. Also, Jin is basically threatening to kill Davis, Ken and/or Tyler ... but according to previous books, that's not something Jin would do anymore. Maybe this plot makes more sense if this book is read as a standalone, I don't know.

Probably my least favorite so far

I found that I couldn’t bring myself to care about either Ken or Davis all that much. I wish that Ken had been much more aggressive or self-assured than he was. I wish that Davis had a less abrupt character change and instead experience a steady, gradual development from ne’er do well to earnestly trying alpha.

Nice solid read that I thoroughly enjoyed. Good writing, characters and story. Also, it was nice to revisit characters from the previous books. This is a series but it's not necessary to read the previous books to enjoy this one. There are no cliffhangers in any books in the series.

It was great to read how Davis and Ken reconnect their friendship and the love that was always there but that Ken tried to hide to protect his heart as well as Davis tried to ignore with his idiotic mistakes and denial! Yet once they come together they make an unbeatable team!

It was so, so. It was not bad and at the same time nothing special. Even so, it was an okay read.
