Heaven Meets Earth: A 40-Day Journey of Transformation Through the Nicene Creed

Rate this book
Discover deeper faith as you explore the richness of Christian belief and tradition with a visually inspired journey through the Nicene Creed.

“We believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth….”

And so the Nicene Creed begins with these powerful words of declaration and belief, words handed down through history for Christians across the centuries to affirm and to hold, to repeat and to remind. The Creed has bolstered the faith of many and still speaks to us today. When our footing fails or our faith needs a refresh, these ancient words can tether us to foundational truths.

In Heaven Meets Earth, philosopher-artist Josh Nadeau, creator of Sword and Pencil, invites you to explore the Nicene Creed in this 40-day devotional journey of transformation for everyday saints. With his iconographic-style art and his insightful words, Josh brings the traditional to the present day in this visually inspired exploration of the faith.

Each daily entry of this spiritual journey includes:

• A short phrase from the Creed to meditate on
• Thoughtful reflections on what the words still mean today
• A beautiful piece of full-color art inspired by the Creed
• A dedicated prayer to bring your thoughts to God
• Whether during the Lent season or any time of the year, step into an ancient, living faith with Heaven Meets Earth, and embrace the beauty of belief with Josh’s stunning visual art alongside this historic Christian confession of faith. Prepare your heart and your mind for transformation as you follow in the footsteps of the faithful multitude who have gone before.

I read this book because I wanted to go a little deeper into the creed that I recite every week, and I read it during lent because it was a 40 day book that released the day before lent. My thoughts: I often have a hard time getting through 40 day studies or similar book, but this one I didn’t. Each line of the creed has one day that you meditate on the words, and one day that you meditate on an image drawn by Josh Nadeau. I found the combination of this, along with the short reading to go with it, and the meditation questions to be very helpful in inviting me in to a prayful, thoughtful state. I do have a deeper appreciation for the creed. Though I wish I would have done something else during lent, because it didn’t really connect with lent at all.

Love Nadeau's art and his prose. This was a great little devotional to go through for the Lent season, with many provocative questions to ponder as you walk through the Nicene Creed and depeen your understanding of traditional Christian beliefs. Highly recommend!

3.5 stars??

This is a beautiful book. Nadeau's artwork is unique and filled with deep, rich theology and symbolism.

The 'devotional' part left much to be desired, unfortunately. This surprised me since his debut book was profound and challenging in the best ways.

He opens his book with an encouragement to embrace Lectio Divina and Visio Divina, which is controversial at best, as its origins are based in eastern mysticism.

But even apart from that, the short quips to encourage certain contemplations or imaginations aren't very deep or even inspiring. I found the content of this book to be shockingly empty of anything really special aside from his beautiful artwork.

Maybe I anticipated too much after his first book? I'm not sure. But I am really disappointed that these were my takeaways this time. Just read his first book.

"We did not form the Creed. The Creed formed us."

Josh brings together the art of words and image to create a 40-day journey through the Nicene Creed that brings together the intellectual and artistic sides of us all to only gain new understanding, but to gain a fresh experiential knowledge of the One who has always been at work in and around us.

Drawing in Scripture, history, experience, and the works of others, this 40-day devotional brings a solid foundation to one of the foundational statements of the Christian faith and tradition. Theologically sound and immensely beautiful, this is a fantastic read for anyone wanting a deeper experience of God through one of church history's greatest explorations into all Truth.

Josh continues to amaze me in his writings on how simple yet deep they are. Heaven meets Earth is the invitation to the core beliefs of Christianity and their foundation in the one the scriptures foretold and forthtell. If you want to meditate on what each phrase means for our life as Christian’s this is the perfect book. If you are looking for long winded arguments and unnecessary babble this is not the book for you because it’s goal is to draw you(or redraw you) into the wonder of the saving works of the father through the son by the Holy Spirit.

This book is a beautiful line by line study, reflection & meditation with stunning artwork throughout to represent each precious word. It is a thought provoking and soul healing 40 day study to bring you closer to your faith and personal relationship with God, bringing you back to the fundamental meaning and purpose of the Christian faith.
This book would make a beautiful gift and would be a meaningful addition to any book lover’s library.

This was my introduction to Nadeau’s work. It was very well thought out and put together. I loved looking at the images and finding the scripture in his depictions. I thought this was such a creative and thoughtful way to engage in the creed. Highly recommend. I’m planning on revisiting it later on.

A slow sacramental walk through the Nicene Creed. I sometimes struggle with short daily engagement books but this one was worth my time. The art alone stirred my affections for Jesus and His holiness in ways that I needed. A book I will return to often.
