At the brink of summer, Callie arrives in a secluded village in the South of France with her young daughter, after barely escaping her menacing ex-partner. Desperate to hide, she rents a cottage on the grounds of the Chateau of the Lost. Her new home sings with flowing water, rustling olive trees, and whispering poppies—an otherworldly nook of hidden magic. Little by little, she warms to her quirky neighbors—a witchy landlady, an acclaimed truffle hunter, his kind veterinarian son, and their lovable dogs. Oh, and a mischievous ghost boy.

Slowly but surely, her new friends help her discover herself again. Years earlier, she gave up music at the insistence of her ex, but as she reclaims her voice, everyone finds that her songs open hearts and heal old wounds. The River Muse is a lovely contemporary story which has some fairy tale vibes weaved into it. I will say that it does give off an important message about domestic violence and encourage people in that situation that you can always find a better life after moving on from that situation. I truly adored some of the images that I saw as I read about the Chateau. This is my first time reading anything by Laura and I have to say that I am very impressed.

We are introduced to Callie who is trying to start over with her daughter after getting out of a abusive relationship with a man who just happened to be friends with her deceased husband. Their journey takes them to a lovely Chateau called La Chanson. From there they will revel in the beauty and discover some secrets of a feud between their neighbors.

This was my first book by Laura Resau, and I really liked it a lot! The setting was definitely one of my favorite parts of the story. This small village in France felt so warm and welcoming with its truffle dogs and sweet community. I especially loved the found family dynamics and watching Callie slowly begin to rebuild her life in a place that feels perfect for a fresh start!

I think the thing I know I'm going to be thinking about weeks from now is Callie's healing journey. I feel like the author handled the topics of emotional abuse, manipulation and gaslighting so well while still keeping a really good focus on hope, healing and strength. I also really appreciated that the new romance kind of remained in the background which allowed Callie's growth and her relationship with her daughter to really shine through! Eva was also adorable and the supporting characters made this town feel sooo full of heart!

I loved that the magical realism here felt super subtle and was kind of woven into the story through music and the village itself. I think that was a super cool way to add a touch of magic! It added this tiny bit of whimsy!

My only real criticism was that the pacing sometimes felt a little slow. There were a few small sections where my attention drifted although I never felt disconnected from the story for very long. I really feel like the characters, setting and themes definitely outweighed the slower moments.

The audiobook, narrated by Cassandra Campbell, was FANTASTIC! I listened first at 2x speed before increasing to 2.5x, and the narration remained incredibly clear and easy to follow throughout. Campbell gave each character a distinct voice, and her French pronunciation and accents were so perfect! I especially loved the voice she created for Eva. It was precious! I paired the audiobook with the eBook for an immersive read and the experience was seamless, but I genuinely think this book would be equally amazing in only audio or only ebook/print, as well!

This was a really heartfelt story about starting over, healing from emotional abuse, finding community and rediscovering yourself. I think if you enjoy character-driven fiction (my favorite!!!) with a tiny hint of magical realism, found family, and a very whimsical feeling setting, this is definitely worth picking up!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advance listener copy (ALC) of this audiobook!

The River Muse is a story about courage, hope, found family, and healing. Callie has taken her daughter and is fleeing an abusive relationship. She finds herself in the small French town of La Chanson. Madame Lavigne, the wine witch, offers them a place to stay, and the other townspeople welcome them into their little community as if they've always belonged. It's here that Callie begins to heal and start anew. I just loved how even though the neighbors were feuding, they set that aside to protect Callie and Eva. This book had such a magical quality about it. The River and the land seemed to just come alive.

Laura is a master at taking the dark and finding the light, turning fear into courage, and showing that hope and love can still be found after immense heartbreak.

The River Muse is an incredibly beautiful story of courage, hope, love, found family, and the power in finding one’s self. The undertones of nature throughout the story provide strength and offer guidance/warnings to those who embrace their surroundings.

Callie suffered the tragic loss of her husband and was instantly taken in and cared for by Brett, a man she thought she could trust. However, as her grief starts to subside, she realizes that certain events are not as they seem. Her instincts help her realize she has been trapped and taken advantage of. She senses the danger that she and her daughter, Eva, are in and knows that she must flee as soon as possible. Callie carefully devises a plan that will take her and Eva overseas in hopes of finding a safe, small town where they can remain safe and hidden. They find their way to La Chanson, and guided by the river’s music and the support of new-found friends, Callie begins to find her inner strength and the voice she lost after the death of her husband. Callie knows that Brett is dangerous and will try to find her. This time though, she knows that she must be strong, for herself and her daughter. She must trust her found family and the friends she has gained, along with her own strength and voice to break the hold that Brett has over her.

The River Muse incites so many feelings and emotions. This story is truly captivating from beginning to end. Laura Resau has carefully mended together a story of abuse with the power in finding one’s voice to create a tale of hope, a hope that happiness and love can win out in the end. That even those who have been broken can heal and find the place where they are loved and feel the light of a bright future.

In full transparency, The River Muse does address domestic abuse and stalking/threatening behaviors. The story also discusses that there are people willing to help those fleeing these circumstances.

Thank you so much to Laura Resau, Harper Muse, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of The River Muse.

Book Review⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thank you to the author @LauraResau, @HarperMuseBooks and @BookSparks for the #gifted book and goodies.

The River Muse completely swept me away with its whimsical atmosphere, magical realism, and heartfelt story of healing. Set in a charming French village, this novel follows a woman rebuilding her life after trauma as she embarks on a transformative mother-daughter journey filled with self-discovery, second chances, and unexpected connections.

I loved the enchanting setting—from a haunted cottage and mysterious forest to a magical spring and beautiful French château. The story blends just the right amount of magic with deep emotional themes, creating a moving tale about learning to trust again, reclaiming yourself, and finding hope after heartbreak. The quirky neighbors and found-family relationships added so much warmth and charm, while the thread of music woven throughout the story made it feel even more immersive.

This is the perfect read if you enjoy atmospheric novels that feel a little magical, a little mysterious, and completely heartfelt. A beautiful reminder that healing isn’t always a straight path, but sometimes the people—and magic—we find along the way help us discover who we are meant to be.

I loved loved loved this book!!

We start off with our main characters, Callie and her daughter Eva, on the run.
Callie’s husband and Eva’s father, Nick, had died several years back during a freak hiking accident, which left them both reeling. “Good guy” Brett, a friend of Nick’s, stepped in quickly to help them cope and deal with daily life, but only after it’s too late does Callie realize that Brett isn’t the good guy that he seems to be.

Callie and Eva take refuge in a mysterious French chateau in La Chanson, with a whispering river that seems to speak to Callie. They are welcomed by the “wine witch”, and find themselves in the middle of a decades-long feud between neighbors.

The River Muse was such a lovely read. It had a hint of darkness, dealing with a domestic violence situation, but also wrapped you in a cozy blanket as you met each of La Chanson’s residents. I found it very empowering the way that Callie found herself as a woman and a mother after grief, and thought that Eva was the most adorable and least annoying child character in a book I have ever read.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley, thank you to the publisher. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Whimsical and cozy with hints of magical realism, and yet a light-ish domestic abuse thriller. Mostly takes place at a small town in France. A journey of healing and coming back to oneself told through present time and a diary of letters.

A love letter to survivors of abuse and mothers who fight to protect their children. Callie and Eva's story is heart wrenching and terrifying. But their journey to hope and a life filled with love is so warm and beautiful.

~♡~ Things I loved:
Well, everything. I loved the comforting of a French chateau for lost souls. The way the people in that small town come to care for Callie and her daughter. How they came together to protect them. There are so many found family vibes which is one of my favorite tropes to read. Each person has their own story to share and struggles they are dealing with.

The aspects of domestic abuse were raw and honest. Manipulation tactics that are sadly relatable for many people. If only we could all run away to find hope and love.

Loved the slightly haunted, in no way scary, house. The ghost boy with his own story, the ghost of Nick, and Eva being able to see them, were great. It brought an additional aspect to an already enjoyable story. The cover and location definitely give spring vibes, but there was also a slight spookiness to the book. I like that it was just accepted and not made into something scary or creepy.

~♡~ Things I wish could have been better:
I have very little to critique with this one. The lack of grief shown for Eva's father, Nick, and even the lack of grief while they are healing and trying to find a life without abuse. I felt it was a little too easy. The way it ended also felt a little too simple. However it did read more cozy, so that could be why. In no way did any of that deter me from absolutely loving this story. I definitely recommend it.

The audio was impeccable! The narrator seamlessly switched from English to French (only a little French is spoken, knowledge of the French language is not required to enjoy this story... and disclaimer, I don't speak much French, so it is entirely opinion based that it was done well). The accent switching between characters was flawless. I listen at high speeds and was easily able to keep up and understand the narrator. Reading or listening to this story would be perfect either way. I had the E-book and the audio together-my personal preference for reading-and it was perfection.

Thanks to Harper Muse Audio and Laura Resau for sending for me an Alc to review.

Lyrical, reflective, and quietly moving.

The River Muse flows like a quiet meditation, weaving together themes of memory, longing, and the healing power of nature. The narrative centers on the river as both a literal and symbolic presence-carrying stories of those who come to its banks, reflecting their grief, joy, and transformation.

Callie, once a famous Indie songwriter/singer, escapes with her daughter to a quiet village in southern France, determined to leave behind the shadow of her violent ex. She settles into a cottage tucked within the grounds of the enigmatic Chateau of the Lost where through enchanted encounters with nature, and confrontations with strangers, she starts on a healing journey of rediscovering her voice and past self.

The writing is lush and atmospheric with a strong emotional core. The river imagery is evocative and symbolic, and the story’s quiet rhythm suits its themes of healing and rediscovery. Characters are drawn with tenderness, however, a bit more depth in character development could have made it perfect. Overall, a poetic, contemplative tale where the river’s current carries both sorrow and hope, leaving the reader with a lingering sense of quiet transformation.

I switched between the audio and e-book formats, particularly to comprehend and enjoy French dialogues, and I'm glad I had both the formats approved.

Thanks to Harper Muse, Harper Muse Audiobooks, and NetGalley for the ARC/ALC in exchange for my honest review.

With lyrical writing and powerful depth, The River Muse swept me along on an inspiring and emotional journey.

Laura Resau skillfully wove together themes of found family, hope, and new beginnings in contrast with the anxiety and fear involved in escaping an abusive relationship. The beautiful setting of village by a river in the French countryside provided a lush and welcoming atmosphere where our main character and her daughter could begin to heal.

I loved the magical realism and fairytale references throughout the narrative, and way that the river itself was an important character in the story, singing sweetly or fiercely through its churning waters.

The story evoked many poignant emotions in me as the characters learned to reclaim their voices, discover lost parts of themselves, and find ways to restore not only their power but their joie de vivre.

This is the second book that I've read by Laura Resau and it certainly won't be my last! Her evocative writing is beautiful, and parts of the story moved me to tears.

I listened to the audiobook version narrated by Cassandra Campbell, whose narration was excellent. She did a wonderful job with the various accents and conveying the range of emotions experienced by the characters.

The setting for this book is absolutely magical and transportive. Welcome to La Chanson, where lost souls are found again.

If you told me I was going to read a book that was full of whimsy, magic, family secrets, domestic violence, ghosts, and healing all in one… I think I would have looked at you like you were a bit bonkers.

But somehow The River Muse managed to encompass all of these things in a beautifully written story.
Our Main character finally has the courage to leave her abusive partner and flees to Southern France. As Fate would have it, she winds up in a place with a magical and musical river, a “wine witch” for a landlord, and enough peace to begin healing— and finding her own voice again.

This novel has all of the charm of a cozy fantasy, while also showing the resilience and strength that only comes from healing. The found family is one of the best parts of the whole story, and the imagery makes me want to dig out my passport and pack a suitcase.

Thank you NetGalley, Harper Muse, and Laura Resau for the alc.

okayyy this book girlie was completely swept away with this read. This story felt like sunlight dancing on water (soft, magical, healing) and was impossible to put down. Between the dreamy South of France setting, the river folklore, the music, and the gentle threads of romance and self-discovery, every page felt so immersive and comforting.

Callie’s journey of learning to trust herself again after heartbreak was handled with so much tenderness, and I loved how the story balanced emotional depth with a quiet touch of magic. It was done so beautifully, and the found family elements especially warmed my heart.

If you love atmospheric stories filled with healing, art, hidden magic, and characters who feel like old friends by the final page, this one deserves a spot on your shelf immediately. Truly such a lovely escape.

This was incredible! The writing combined with the setting made for an enchanted read. @lauraresau has the incredible ability to make a story come alive! Her descriptive writing painted a very vivid picture in my mind and it was like I was there in the French Countryside along with Callie. This had a magical feel to it and it definitely helped with breaking the tension because there were some very hard topics discussed in the book. What I appreciate was the fact that the story highlights the fact that you don't have to accept your circumstances and there is always a way out. My emotions were all over the place while reading this, a sign of a great book in my opinion! Fantastic read - you will find hope and found family and even romance in this book, a great read that I would highly recommend.

The River Muse by Laura Resau on audio felt like pure escapism. A French chateau, a healing journey, a hint of magic, and a woman rediscovering her voice? Yes, please. Sigh, I loved this. Bit of a tearjerker really. I will forever be a fan of the found family trope. And anything showing a strong and determined mother.

Contemporary fiction is a new genre for me, and I’ve definitely been enjoying it! And you know what I was actually really excited when I saw this one floating around online. FOMO is real over here. I even have the perfect coworker that I’m gonna be recommending this one to!

This is a beautiful story about a mom on the run that is looking to reclaim herself, her music and her identity, all while encouraging her daughter’s wonder. This was full of found family, lost love, new love, and strong women. Even had me a little teary eyed and keeping my fingers crossed for the ending I wanted. I also loved the way that music (and dogs) played a huge part in this story! I’m glad that I’ve decided to follow my dream and start taking piano lessons later this year.

I’ll definitely be reading The Alchemy Of Flowers by her as well!

Escaping to a cozy world (from Colorado to La Chanson, a fictional village in Provence, also Aix-en-Provence, Southern France): Laura Resau weaves magic in The River Muse. A healing novel coming from a “fantastical realm.”

Not everything is enchanted, though. Warmly signed, the Author’s Note prefaces a story set in two dramatically different worlds with a “heads-up about sensitive content” to “help us feel seen, heard, healed, and connected.” Not without ending to assure us, “Dogs are a joyful part of this story!”

Three truffle-hunting dogs, to be specific. One of a number of ancient traditions in an idyllic setting in a fictional Provençal village in the South of France, with a mythical river flowing through it.

Resau switches between taking us inside a dreamy village to inside a “glass prison” perched high in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. A “seven-million-dollar cabin” of abuse.

The story revolves around two main characters who escape to the village, their refuge: late thirties Callie, mother of effervescent, precocious eight-year-old Eva. The two major storylines create a push-pull emotional reading experience. Great release from great fear.

Stylistically, the magical setting is told in the third-person narrative. Whereas the astute psychological analyses of the sociopathic abuser (Brett), along with all the mental pep-talk and planning that goes into escaping, are told in an unusual epistolary format in which Callie writes to herself. Displaying the power of psychological journeying to help face truths, the technique also serves as a countdown to the day Callie and Eve must flee or they’ll be no turning back. Composed over nine weeks until “Escape” day, she wrote it in a non-monitored crawl space in a house fully equipped with all the state-of-the-art technology monitoring their every move.

Chillingly warning how easy it is to take advantage of vulnerable people-in-crisis. How your online presence can be wiped out, phone lines cut, passwords, activation codes, bank accounts accessed, so you have no personal connections with the outside world. Not just to steal your identity, but to erase it when you’re in a deep “medicated fog” grieving the tragic death of your husband and father (Nick). Inflicted by cunning, manipulative, controlling Brett hiking with Nick when he fell to his death on a steep rocky mountain trail.

The creepy and terrorizing parts read like a thriller. But the heart of the novel is not about losing yourself, but about finding yourself.

Hitting all the right notes is Callie’s musical voice. Callie Byrd was once a well-known Indie rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter whose music moved people. She used to sing loudly, joyfully, but hasn’t even whispered a song to Eva in two years grieving, victimized, and upon awakening.

Vigilant about letting anyone hear her voice when she finds the strength and courage to “Fly, Fly, Away” – the title of the song that brought her fame – when Callie and Eva land in the spellbinding South of France. Not a chance to remain invisible around Eva who attracts dogs and their owners who become caring friends. Eva and Callie bring out the best in people.

Pay close attention to all the words in the poetic epilogue that includes: “music echoes your soul, harmonizes with your fears and longings, calls forth your own song, until it spills out in liquid jewels.” Revealing the force of Resau’s musical prose with a clue to the hope you’ll be rooting for.

That is, the people you’ll be rooting for. Starting with the escapists, spreading to the villagers they luck into crossing paths with in a place “too good to be true.” What we’re rooting for is that after two years of psychic cruelty they find lasting tranquility and happiness.

You’ll be charmed and alarmed. Charmed by the concept of It-Takes-A-Village to undo the alarming mental damage perpetrated on the innocent.

Muse in the novel’s title evokes the water songs heard from the legendary river. The mythical Chanson “waters rise from the source, deep in the earth, from secret caverns, hidden pockets of spirit.” According to Celtic mythology, an instrument called the carnyx is found at the river’s source. nslated from the French means song. In a larger context, it refers to France’s “vocal history.” Muse also refers to the Greek goddess of music named Calliope. Callie’s full name.

A Mayan deity reinforces good versus evil. Treasured by Callie and Eva as a memory of happy times as a family, Brett has an obsessive fetish with the statue. He in a dark, shadowy antiquities business. Not the only suspicion you’ll have about him.

Trilingual, Resau often drops in the musical language of France, always defining the words. Her Spanish comes in handy too for inventing a Guatemalan object named Pepito.

A lot going on that Resau’s background and experiences draw from: cultural anthropology training, living in three countries, teaching creative writing and languages, adopting a child from Guatemala. (See her longer bio.)

As a multi-award-winning author of eleven novels for kids and young adults, she also spins fairy-tales. (Three are blended into these captivating pages, one The Island of Happiness by the 17th century female French writer said to have invented the phrase, Madame D’Aulnoy.)

The best elements of humanity are found in the author’s fairytale imagination that infuses ancient Celtic history in the region and fantasy in a beautiful landscape. What’s even more beautiful are the people.

Dogs make wonderful connections to the village characters in this playful picture including: elderly bachelor Monsieur Forêt, truffle expert extraordinaire; his bachelor son Luc, roughly Callie’s age, who tenderly treats animals but has yet pursued his vet license; Madame Lavigne, in her eighties, roughly Monsieur’s age, chateaux owner with an extensive wine cave collection; Lucien, one of her two sons who lives with her, tongue-tied and gentle, another bachelor, in his fifties. As the characters’ stories come to light, it’s fascinating how their pasts share buried emotions and “secret kindness.”

Madame Lavigne’s reputation as a “wine witch” is transformed around Eva and Callie, insisting they stay on her property in a cottage, doting on them. Wine flows (Orangina for Eva) matched to the regional cuisines.

Eva and Callie weave their magic on other villagers too, representing some of the French culture people love, such as the owner of a boulangerie (baker).

In their new world, Callie and Eva aren’t removed from humanity and the goodness of people. They’re part of it.

For me, a truly great fiction book needs to hold me captive. I want to get lost in the plot, become deeply invested in the justice served to the characters, and walk away with a satisfying resolution. The River Muse gave me all of this.

I was actually so hooked on this story that I made my teenage daughter listen to it with me in the car on our road trip to a volleyball tournament. She ended up completely invested in it, too. She wanted to know how the story ended, grew deeply attached to the characters, and absolutely hated the antagonist (so, major props to Laura Resau for that character work). I wanted to listen to this audiobook every chance I got just to see what happened next. Resau built the tension in the story at just the right pace, keeping me invested.

The characters have intriguing histories that keep you hooked, and the magical realism in the storyline is just enough to be believable without taking over the plot. Each of the characters had some level of complexity, and I loved Resau’s inclusion of dogs, truffle hunting, French food and wine, and other details that grounded the story and made it real.

I have a personal connection to the settings of this book that made it extra special. The River Muse takes place in Colorado and France. I used to live in the area of CO where Laura Resau is from (which I discovered when looking up her author events!). On top of that, my best friend just moved her family to France. Following the protagonist’s journey through the language, food, and culture felt like a beautiful reflection of the updates my friend has been sending me.

As a budding writer myself, I loved analyzing the structure. I did find myself wishing we got to see more of the protagonist's song lyrics (in my head, she had a Phoebe Bridgers vibe). I think a journal that included song lyrics could have been a really fascinating way to show deeper levels of Callie and her backstory. Resau hinted at this with song titles and references to her music, which peaked my interest and left me wanting more.

Regarding the audio production: the narration was stellar. Cassandra Campbell did an exceptional job distinguishing characters through distinct tones and voices, and her French accent was absolutely superb. I will actively seek out other work by Campbell.

The River Muse is a well written story about healing and redemption that I feel good about recommending to others. I look forward to reading more from Laura Resau and adding her previous books to my TBR list.

To sum this up. . . Oui Oui It is a 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If I could entice you to read a book from the first lines of a book, this one would be it!

" In morning sunshine, as her daughter slept, Callie cranked open the window of their attic nook, breathing in buttery scents of croissants from a nearby boulangerie.
We are free.
Peering at the cobbled street below, she tried out the thought. It felt like looking over a cliff, that mix of vertigo and awe, fear and joy, some muscles clenching, others relaxing, as her heart tried to make sense of it all."

THE RIVER MUSE written by Laura Resau

I have the ebook and I also bought the audible version and am looking forward to listening. I started it and the narrator, Cassandra Campbell has such a soothing voice. She was a perfect match for this book!!!!

If you enjoy these vibes, you'll fall in love with this book like I did:

✨️ Setting in southern France
✨️Wine witch
✨️Musical magical river
✨️ Romance
✨️ Found family
✨️ Haunted castle
✨️ lyrical writing style
✨️ Grief, healing, and hope
✨️ Nature

Are you a foodie? If so, you'll love the French foods in this book! Here's just a sampling
✨️Truffle infused honey
✨️ Chevre & Olive oil
✨️Cheese souffle
✨️ Citrus enliven salad
✨️ lavendar creme brulu
✨️Orange blossom tea
✨️Baguettes

While this is fantasy book, it is real. . .it's an empowering story of recovery from an emotionally abusive relationship. It follows Callie (and her daughter) as she packs up and heads out, with little money or resources, to build a better life for herself and her daughter.

If you read Laura's other book, The Alchemy of Flowers then you find the same writing style here. I loved it, so of course I loved this one too! Both are stand alones.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

This was such an atmospheric and emotional read, and the audiobook absolutely elevated the experience for me. I was completely pulled into the story from the beginning and found myself wanting to keep listening whenever I had a spare moment.

The River Muse beautifully balances mystery, grief, healing, and a touch of magical realism in a way that felt both cozy and haunting at the same time. The French countryside setting was stunning and immersive, and La Chanson honestly felt like a character in itself. Between the vineyard, the river, and the small-town tensions, the atmosphere was incredibly vivid.

I really connected with Callie’s journey throughout the book. Watching her slowly rebuild herself after grief, manipulation, and fear felt very emotional and empowering. The domestic abuse elements were handled thoughtfully, and while there are darker themes throughout the story, there’s also a warmth and hopefulness woven into it that kept the book from ever feeling too heavy.

Eva was also such a standout for me. Child characters can sometimes pull me out of a story, but she felt genuine, lovable, and added so much heart to the book. I also loved the side characters and the layered relationships between the residents of La Chanson.

The audiobook narration was fantastic and really captured both the emotional moments and the eerie, whimsical atmosphere of the story. It made the entire experience feel incredibly immersive.

Overall, this was an amazing listen and such a beautifully layered story about survival, healing, found family, and rediscovering yourself. Definitely a 4.5-star read for me.

Thank you, Laura Resau, Harper Muse, and NetGalley for the early preview of this book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Title: River Muse
Author: Laura Resau
Format: e-book

Trigger Warnings:
* emotionally abusive relationship
* Death
* Animal cruelty
* Depression
* Grief

Review:

Callie is an American woman who finds herself fleeing to France with her daughter to escape her partner. She suffered through depression with losing her husband and the father of her child, and found herself in a relationship with an abusive and controlling rich man.

Please read trigger warnings; They are present throughout the story, but are thoughtfully explained.

While the specific relationship abuse Callie details and expresses throughout the book are not what I have personally experienced, I found this to be thoughtfully detailed. You can feel the hopelessness and fear that Callie has while dealing with Brett.

This story has so many beautiful messages throughout and I really believe it can be enjoyed and appreciated by all, even if you didn’t connect via the personal problems that the main character experienced. Love can be found in many ways and many different relationships, even when you may have lost hope.

Laura Resau’s writing beautifully flows to illustrate vivid scenes and sounds throughout this book. I loved the touch of French phrases throughout, although we know they were speaking in French throughout the story. My few years of taking French in school appreciated and enjoyed it. I found myself saying phrases and looking forward to having some literal interpretations explained.

I was blown away that I could connect and be interested in learning about each of the characters. Many times I was surprised by what happened and loved how each character fit so beautifully in the plot. I appreciate the realism of these characters holding on to past trauma and being hesitant to share their stories with Callie.

I personally wanted a slightly different resolution 😏, but I felt that I got everything that I wanted out of this story. I love reading Laura’s stories ❤️

When Callie’s world is shattered by the loss of her husband, she finds comfort in the arms of someone she believes will protect both her and her daughter. But after spending two years trapped in a haze of grief and emotional manipulation, she slowly begins to see the truth with painful clarity. Once she recognizes the reality of her situation, she makes the courageous decision to reclaim her life and escape with her daughter to France.

Laura Resau does an exceptional job portraying the fear, confusion, and emotional exhaustion that come with leaving an abusive relationship. As someone who has experienced this myself, so much of Callie’s journey felt heartbreakingly real. The gaslighting, the constant attempts to make you question your memory and sanity, the steady erosion of your self-worth until you believe no one else could ever love you—it was all captured so accurately. The manipulation extends beyond the victim, reaching friends, family, and even children, as the abuser works to maintain the image of being caring and trustworthy while tearing someone else down behind closed doors.

At first, parts of this story were difficult and triggering for me to read. But as Callie found her strength and fought to build a safer, happier future for herself and her daughter, the story became deeply empowering. Watching her begin again gave me hope during my own journey of rebuilding my life.

This novel was beautifully written, emotional, and ultimately inspiring. I would absolutely recommend it to others. Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for the opportunity to read and review this title.

The River Muse arrived on my doorstep in the middle of a Myths & Folklore reading season, and it turned out to be exactly the right book at exactly the right moment.

It’s the story of Callie, a singer who loses her husband under suspicious circumstances and finds herself trapped in an emotionally abusive relationship in her grief. She escapes to the south of France with her daughter, and what follows is a quiet, warm, genuinely moving story of rebuilding — through friendship, through community, through music.

I expected it to be heavier than it was. What surprised me was how loveable the whole cast of characters turned out to be. Laura Resau even managed to make me feel something for the antagonist, which is its own kind of achievement.

At the heart of the village is a Salon du Thé where the town gathers for open mic nights, and a ritual of three whisper words that unlock something in Callie every time she sits down to write. It’s a small concept, but it stayed with me. I’m already thinking about how to bring it into my own life.

And then there’s the carnyx — a legendary instrument said to sing beneath the river current at the cave mouth that gave the town its name. That’s where the myth quietly lives in this book. Not ornamental. Just present, like something older running underneath everything.

If you love France, read this book. If you’ve ever needed a story about finding your footing again, read this book. It carries elements of mystery, romance, family, thriller, and a touch of fantasy without being weighed down by any single one of them.

A genuinely lovely read.

4.25/5 ✨

This was such an atmospheric, cozy read with emotional depth and just enough magical realism to make everything feel dreamlike.

Callie is on the run with her daughter, Eva, escaping a controlling and abusive relationship. Once a musician, Callie hasn’t truly made music since the death of her husband — and somewhere along the way, she also lost pieces of herself. But when she arrives in the small French town of La Chanson (“the song”), the river itself seems to welcome her through music, warning her of danger and guiding her toward safety.

The town quickly becomes a refuge. Between the warm community, the charming setting, and Madame Lavigne (aka the iconic wine witch), Callie and Eva begin rebuilding their lives. But beneath the cozy atmosphere are lingering grief, family tensions, land disputes, and painful histories that have fractured the people around them. What I loved most was how Callie and Eva slowly become the bridge connecting everyone together — while also finding the family they desperately needed themselves.

The vibes here were immaculate: healing journeys, music, wine, riverside magic, emotional conversations, and a touch of mystery without ever becoming a full thriller.

My only small criticism is that parts of Callie’s backstory felt repetitive at times, and a few chapters didn’t feel fully necessary to understand her past. Still, I really enjoyed the overall story, themes, and atmosphere.

If you love books about healing, magical towns, found family, and soft magical realism with emotional stakes, this is definitely worth picking up. ✨

The River Muse is the story of Callie Bird— a mother and singer, whose wings have essentially been clipped. After the death of her husband, Nick, she is taken in by an acquaintance of his, Brett, an antiquity who happens to love shiny, precious things. Under the guise of helping Callie take care of her daughter, Eva, and adjust to her new way of life, Brett is gathering intel. He is gathering information to make Callie look incompetent and neglectful.

Callie, taking Eva with her, makes her escape to France. Here, she is discovered by Brett’s PA for his Paris business location, and is then directed to La Chanson. She is directed to lodge at the Chateau there, and is warned about the water witch.

At the Chateau, Callie finds family, friendship, and love. But above all: Callie found her voice again. Once Brett finally came for Eva and her, they were inevitably prepared and supported.

At the very beginning of this book, I thought it was dragging on too long. But, by the end, my opinion has changed. I absolutely love this second-chance story of “finding your voice.” I loved the time I spent at the Chateau of the Lost, and I will miss it.

The characters in this one had nuance, which I adored. There are so many 2D characters out there, lots of “all bad” in the literary world, so I love the little release of Tristan and Brett at the end. The regret and fondness for a person who no longer existed, not just in death, but lost in adulthood.

Cassandra Campbell was not only the perfect pick for narration, but she just did a fantastic job overall.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 Stars
The River Muse by Laura Resau
Narrated by Cassandra Campbell

Thank you to NetGalley, Harper Muse, and Laura Resau for the advance listening copy. All thoughts are my own.

This one started a little slow for me, but once it found its footing, I ended up really loving it.

Callie is escaping a manipulative crappy ex with her young daughter and starting over in a small village in France. What begins as a chance to hide turns into something much bigger as she becomes wrapped up in a decades-old family feud, builds a found family, and slowly starts creating a life that’s truly her own.

There isn’t any spice, and the romance stays in the background, but it was sweet and fit the story well. The real heart of this story is Callie’s journey of healing, finding her voice again, and learning who she is outside of someone else’s control. As a mother of 3 a lot of her thoughts and choices really resonated with me. I would do anything to protect my babies.

The character development was fantastic. The author did a great job making the town feel alive, and the villain was incredibly well written (but also f that guy).
She made character that were just going to be miserable into a huge part of the story. I also loved seeing both Callie’s life before her escape and the life she was building afterward. While the pacing was a little slow at first, it picked up nicely and kept me invested.

The narration by Cassandra Campbell was wonderful. A few character voices occasionally blended together, but overall it was a very enjoyable listen and brought the story to life beautifully.

A cozy, magical story about starting over, found family, motherhood, and discovering your strength again. If you enjoy atmospheric settings, a touch of magic, and character driven stories about healing and second chances, this is worth picking up!

This was such a cozy, magical story, but with enough mystery and suspense throughout to keep me completely hooked from the beginning. I genuinely felt anxious about where the story was headed, but in the best possible way. The magical realism blended so well with the fairytale mythology vibes, creating an enchanting world without ever feeling too unrealistic or like I was reading a fantasy.

The storytelling felt immersive, lyrical, and almost dreamlike. Somehow, Laura Resau managed to combine the heavier themes like domestic abuse and grief alongside found family, singing rivers, and ghost children, without it ever feeling clunky or misplaced. One thing I especially appreciated in the audiobook was how seamlessly the multiple languages were incorporated. Hearing them spoken aloud actually improved comprehension and made me feel like I had been transported to that tiny French village.

My biggest critique is that I think a slower burn romance would have made more sense here. I also found the ending a little too buttoned up and perfect considering how emotionally complex and messy everything leading up to it had been. Still, this exceeded my expectations. The pacing stayed steady throughout, and by the end I found myself racked with anticipation. If you want a cozy romance with magical realism, a touch of suspense, and the sweetest little found family, look no further. Thank you netgalley for the audiobook arc!

Laura Resau's The River Muse was such a joy to listen to! The story begins with Callie who is coming out of prescription drug-induced fog. She realizes that she is essentially a prisoner in the home of a rich man who scooped her and her young daughter, Eva, up to "protect them" after the untimely death of her husband on a hiking trip. To escape her miserable life, she plans and successfully executes a plan where Callie and Eva travel to a small town in France. Callie and Eva are taken under the wing of an old vintner who rents her a small cottage next to a chateau. There she begins to heal and feel safe among the wild terrain of the forest and the river that seems to speak to Callie. When the man who kept her prisoner for two years tracks her down, the townspeople rally around Callie and Eva and show them that a family need not be blood relatives but a community of friends.

I listened to the audiobook version of The River Muse, which was expertly narrated by Cassandra Campbell. She performed all the characters in differing voices and demonstrating appropriate emotions when the story necessitated them. I especially enjoyed her voice for Eva, which was filled with exuberance and wonder. I definitely recommend this beautifully written audiobook and look forward to future books by this author.

In The River Muse, we dive into a richly developed story, full of vivid descriptions that make you feel the beauty of place. This also is a story of emotional abuse, and as a reader without a personal connection to this experience, I was able to see how a person could end up in this type of relationship.
The story has the feel of a retelling of a Greek myth at times (in the best way!). What I mean by that is there are characters that feel like archetypes - the tragic heroine, stuck in a terrible relationship, cut off from everything, including herself. The evil man who controls her— to the outside world, he supports her. Behind closed doors, he controls every part of her, makes her entirely dependent on him. The river & music are also characters in their own way.
But this is only partly about that. This is mostly about how she finds herself and builds a new life. How she finds her voice again. I truly admired that this wasn’t a story of damsel in distress, insert man to save the day. Au contraire. I really enjoyed how it is about her coming back to herself, and how the new community she builds respects her enough to let her lead her way through it.

I couldn’t wait to get back to this story, and I didn’t want it to end!

Many thanks to the author, Harper Muse Audiobooks and Netgalley for the pleasure of the ARC of this novel.
