I watch her from the shadows, veiled by night.
When the sky turns obsidian and she lets down her guard, I’m there. Silent. Waiting.
Lurking... from under her bed?

My name is Aim—demon lord, spymaster, and the most dangerous voyeur in the British suburbs.
I’ve toppled kingdoms, blackmailed archdemons, and gathered secrets that could start wars.
But somehow, I’ve ended up hiding beneath a mortal’s IKEA furniture.

I saw her by chance—brown curls catching the twilight, sparkling gray eyes full of mischief and light. She didn’t know that one accidental touch would mark her.
That I’d claim her.
That I’d haunt her.

Sweet Amy has no idea her quiet little life just became the target of Hell’s most relentless shadow.
And she’s never going to keep a secret from me again.

This story? Absolute perfection.
Liana Valerian has done it again — serving action, stalking (the attractive demon kind, don’t panic), emotional whiplash, suspense, and the kind of delicious spice that makes you kick your feet and question your life choices 🥵

WOW. Just… wow.

We follow Amy — a chaotic book-girlie who would 100% trip into a portal if one opened in front of her — and Aim, a tattooed, pierced, morally-gray demon lord with enough attitude to fill an entire underworld. He works for the terrifying Ashtaroth, hunting down a villain who once wreaked major havoc… and Earth just happens to be his investigation zone.

Then he meets Amy.
One accidental encounter later and this unstoppable being of darkness is obsessed. Like “I must lurk under your bed tonight” obsessed. (And honestly? Same, Aim. Same.)

Their chemistry? Sharp as a dagger and twice as dangerous. The banter? Chef’s kiss. The tension? Like being held over a cliff by a very hot villain who’s pretending he doesn’t care.

So if you’re craving:

✨ Dark fantasy vibes
✨ A spicy demon lord with ink, piercings & a painfully soft spot
✨ A heroine who is delightfully unhinged in the best book-lover way
✨ Obsession, danger, and that “touch her and die” energy
✨ Writing that keeps your heart racing and your Kindle overheating

…then The Veil of Obsidian is your next addiction.

Go read it, fall in love, and join the rest of us screaming into the void about Aim 😈💜📚

Rcvd an ARC from Booksprout.

We meet demon lord Aim, who is in London on a mission to find another demon. A woman on her phone runs into him and keeps going and it had him intrigued. He follows her home and watches her. There is smtg about this woman who has him on edge. Amy is a huge fan of reading smut and one night she had a very vivid dream of a demon taking her. What she doesn't expect ia that dream demon and very much alive. Aim wants Amy and will stop at nothing to conquer her. Except thr demon he's beeing hunting had different ideas.

✨ARC reader✨

I received my advanced copy of this book without having read the first 2. I did read the first in the series as preparation.

I think this novella was paced well, however I just could not vibe with Amy. Being from the UK myself, her phrases just read like a Carry On film from the 60s, as well as terms that are not used in the UK, see: ‘pitcher of Guinness’. It was just a bit off putting, and for such a short novella, that is quite important to me.

However, if you can look past your FMC sounding like a time travelling cockney then crack on 🖤

💖💖Huge thanks to Liana Valerian for including me on her ARC team, it's an honor and privilege to me. All opinions are my own💖💖

"What I feel for you is as unholy as obsession can get."

This is a story about the obsessive love of Aim, a demon lord, for Amy–a human who loves reading smut. One day, Aim bumps into Amy, who is busy with her phone and doesn't even look at him. Aim becomes obsessed with Amy and follows her to her house, looking around her house to get to know her, and protects her from another man who is following her...but someday he can't protect her from his enemy–another demon, who captures Amy.

Aim and Amy, sitting in the tree... F. U. C. K. I. N. G. Because I never ignore signs and patterns when the universe offers them to me so blatantly. Amy is meant to be mine. And I will take her.

Aim and Amy~ I love their names together, it sounds so cute!😆 This book is short, fast-paced, and I think there’s not much relationship development as it is heavy on insta-attraction between them. Aim is so obsessed and over the top with Amy since the very first time he landed his eyes on Amy, and she's been sort of scared and intrigued at the same time to have him😄 oh and I loved that there are some glimpses of my favorite characters here!🤩 Aim doesn't hesitate to ask Ashtaroth, his master, for help and even begs Sataniel when it comes to Amy:🥰

"Apologies, Master. But that is my woman. I would have her safe as much as you would your consort."
Ashtaroth blinks at me once. "You've known her for how long? A matter of days?"
I breathe out through my nose. "Did you not know, in some way, Lana was important to you the moment you two met?"

It is an easy read and spicyyy🥵 a good pallet cleanser between some darker or heavy reads. Go grab this book!✨

LIANA DID IT AGAIN AND IT WAS SINFULLY DELICIOUS! This was 2.5 in the river of hell series, and this series just keep getting better and better. Aim and Amy were the best and most poetic. I tell you from the very beginning when I read "Aim and Amy sitting int the tree.... F.U.C.K.I.N.G. Because I never ignore signs and patterns when the universe offers them to me so blatantly. Amy is meant to be mine. And I will take her." I knew that liana ate this book up. Then as Aim slowly moves around undetected yet in Amys apartment he found her bookshelf, he knew our girl Amy was smutty like we all are. Then things continue and he organizes her sock and tea bags and does all kinds of sweet things, damn where can I find a demon like Aims. He then devours her in her sleep and well that the beginning of the end she hooked. Also Aim has a Jacobs ladder and a apadravya so yes ma'am. Now Andras is a b**ch the way he did Amy and Aim I despise him. Yet everything did turn out in the end okay. Thanks to Lucifer and his soul bonding. This was a hilarious, spicy, sweet, amazing novella that was amazing. FYI liana I loved the bonus chapter, and how they practiced and did things to finish their book. You did an absolute amazing job with this and I'm excited about the river of Woe next goodness this is amazing. This book was one of the highlights of the New Year. ou need to grab this on JANUARY 30,2026.

The Veil of Obsidian (From the Rivers of Hell #2.5) is dark, wicked, and ridiculously fun—the kind of demon romance that sinks its claws in from the first line and doesn’t let go. As a novella, it slots beautifully into the series, but it also delivers a complete, addictive story on its own, centred on Aim—demon lord, spymaster, and self-proclaimed “most dangerous voyeur in the British suburbs”—and Amy, the chaotic mortal book girl who accidentally captures his attention.
Aim is everything a demon MMC should be: ruthless, obsessive, morally grey, but also unexpectedly tender in the most unhinged ways—organising drawers, lurking under IKEA beds, and vowing to claim the girl who never even saw him coming. Amy is delightfully messy, smut‑loving, and full of warmth, and watching this ancient, terrifying being become completely gone for one human woman is incredibly satisfying. Their chemistry is razor‑sharp, the banter is genuinely funny, and the spice is scorching (pierced MMC lovers, you are absolutely fed).
What elevates this to a full 5 stars for me is how much heart and craft Liana packs into a relatively short page count. The Rivers of Hell world feels as rich and alive as ever, the stakes and action keep things tense, and there are clever, loving nods to the indie romantasy community sprinkled throughout that made the experience even more special. The Veil of Obsidian is perfectly paced, emotionally satisfying, and an absolute must‑read for fans of demon x human romance, stalker vibes (the sexy fictional kind), and darkly romantic urban fantasy. I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review, and I already can’t wait to reread it.

3.8/5

Before I go any further, I just want to say this book is VERY spicy. Regardless, I loved it!

The first thing I loved are the characters. Amy is so dorky and relatable. She's also the perfect combination of sweet and feisty. She's a really likable character to follow around. Aim is very smooth and obsessive, but in a very attractive way. The claim he lays on Amy is something that will make you swoon.

Apparently this is book 2.5 in a series and I haven't read the other books, but I still feel like I mostly understood what was going on. There are some characters I felt I didn't really know, but it was no big deal, so you can definitely read this one if you haven't read the others. However, I'm very intrigued by this one and it makes me eager to read the other books in the series!

This is just a novella, so there's not the amount of growth you'd expect in the characters as what you'd experience in a full-blown novel. It's not incredibly deep in terms of character arcs, but the characters are so likable that it doesn't matter. I would say this is a very spice-driven novella..

Overall, this is a very enjoyable read with great characters that I hope to see more of!

I received an advanced reader copy of this book from BookSprout and am writing this review of my own accord!

The Veil of Obsidian was so good — if you’re obsessed with monster romance or paranormal romance, this novella is exactly what you need. It’s part of the Rivers of Hell series, but I read it as a standalone with no problems at all.

Set in a dark fantasy world filled with demons, angels, Heaven, and Hell, this story immediately pulls you in. Amy, our FMC, is a mortal and a classic bookish girl who gets to live out the ultimate what if a hot demon lord appeared in your bed fantasy — and yes, she absolutely has some dirty fun with him 😉.

Aim is our demon lord MMC, and his obsession is instant, intense, and deliciously unhinged. The stalker energy is strong in the best way — including him literally hiding under her bed and reorganising her place. I mean… iconic 😋.

The spice in this novella was absolutely filthy, and I loved every second of it. Fast, fiery, and unapologetic, this book delivered exactly what I wanted and then some. I’m definitely continuing on with the rest of the series by Liana Valerian.

Tropes:
🖤 Demon × Human
🔥 Age Gap
🖤 Soul Pact
🔥 Morally Grey MMC
🖤 He Hides Under Her Bed
🔥 LOL Moments
🖤 Horns (and she holds onto them 😏)
🔥 Tail Play (he knows how to use it 👀)

Spice Rating: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

This novella starts with a delicious trigger warning, and you better believe it. This story is filled with enough spice to set the curtains on fire. Our antagonist is a handsome, charming, and ancient demon named Aim, roaming the universe in pursuit of a rogue demon who has broken the code of the Prince of Darkness. While in pursuit of the bad devil, Aim is distracted by a lovely young woman who bumps into him but doesn’t acknowledge her blunder. He is intrigued, she is clueless, until she wakes from a “dream” to find this beautiful, dangerous demon nibbling in places that make her smolder with delight. There are some very interesting demon appendages that we mere mortals know nothing about, but they do seem to steam up the situation. When all seems to be going perfectly, get ready for a surprise. If the reader likes steamy, this is the novella you should not miss.

After reading some cute, fluffy stuff for a few weeks this was exactly the filth I was looking for.🥵
Would you give up the chance at eternity in Heaven for a demon? What if he flipped Hell upside down to save you?
Aim may be a little overzealous. Following the girl that bumped into him all the way home and then going through her things while she showered does seem like a little much. But consider this:
*Organizing her tea and her socks by color ✔
*Putting her laundry where it's supposed to go ✔
*Makes sure the creepy guy that followed her home will never get close to her again ✔
*Eating her is so pleasurable he 💦 in his pants ✔
*She loves his demonic attributes and consistently encourages him to show them ✔
*Love is so intense that he even asks God to make sure you're ok ✔
I mean, come on. We can overlook a little stalking and unknown mutual masturbation when the demon that's obsessed with us just has our best interest at heart, right? Right 🤭😍🥰

This story was ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 and 🌶🌶🌶🌶

I fell in love with Aim somewhere along the way of this series (likely that scene in The River of Hatred - you know the one I mean 😉) and I was so excited for Aim to get his moment in the spotlight.

I also loved Amy! She was a great match for Aim, and, let's be honest, if you are the type of person reading this book, you likely felt a bit of a kindred spirit in Amy. I mean, I would like to think I would be a sensible person and freak out if a demon presented himself to me, but I have read enough 🔥😈 to know at least some part of me would be far too intrigued to kick him out 😉

This story was a great, bite-sized ride, with lots of spice and still managed to find room for plot. Warning, the plot won't make as much sense if you haven't read the other books in this series but you won't be sorry for reading them. This whole series had me devouring the books and bonus content as fast as I could read!

What a delicious paranormal stalker romance!

The Veil of Obsidian was such a fun and enjoyable read. The main characters were truly amazing—I loved both of their personalities, and the FMC especially stole my heart with her book-girl energy. She was so relatable and fun to follow.

The chemistry between the characters was so good. They worked beautifully together and felt genuinely lovely as a couple. And the spice? Absolutely delivered. Liana Valerian always does an incredible job writing sexy, spicy scenes, and this book was no exception.

I also loved being back in this world. It felt familiar yet fresh, and I really enjoyed meeting new, amazing characters within it. Overall, this was a highly entertaining, immersive read that kept me hooked from start to finish. I’m always excited to pick up a Liana Valerian book, and this one did not disappoint at all.

AMAZING!!! I absolutely adore Aim and Amy!

Liana is one of my favourite authors and this world she has built around all the characters in The Rivers of Hell series is just fantastic.

Amy is just the funniest FMC and the things she comes out with are just hilarious. Aim arrives and disrupts her comfortable life whilst on a mission and it’s not long before they are obsessed with each other. Obviously things don’t run smoothly so a trip to Hell and the help of some well loved characters make for a brilliant storyline.

This novella did not disappoint. It had adventure, humour that will make you chuckle, romance, s3x and of course a pierced Demon that will make you melt 🫠 Another very enjoyable read.

ARC Review 📚

Book: The Veil of Obsidian by Liana Valerian

Always a pleasure to read the books written by Liana! I have been enjoying my journey through this world so far, and loved meeting all the characters. I'm happy that Aim got his own novella

"𝘏𝘪𝘴 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘮𝘺 𝘫𝘢𝘸. 𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘰𝘧𝘧 𝘩𝘪𝘮 – 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘳, 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘳, 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘢𝘪𝘳 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘢 𝘵𝘩𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘮."

This was one hell of a spicy read! The demon lord lived up to his hype. This definitely served as a fun and steamy in between reads. The FMC being a book reader was both funny and relatable

“𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘐 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘴 𝘶𝘯𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘴 𝘰𝘣𝘴𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘨𝘦𝘵.”

I want to thank the author for sending me an advanced copy to read and review 🖤

***potential spoilers!***

I received this as an ARC reader. I generally like this author’s writing. (I’ve read one of her other novellas) I like the way she tells these stories. I haven’t read one of her full books yet and that’s a definite yet. However, with that being said, this little story was so good. Definitely SMUTTY which is always fun. But I also enjoyed the dramatic parts of the book. Aim is a solid character and Amy is cute. My ONLY complaint, I got so annoyed with Amy’s continuous little sayings such as “well butter my biscuit”. She would have one thrown into her actual speech and almost every thought she had and it got really annoying after the first couple of chapters from her perspective. I much preferred Aim’s point of view.

I've been so looking forward to a story about Aim, and The Veil of Obsidian did NOT disappoint! Liana you always get me with the short novellas in the series!

Amy's character had me cracking up! I love a book, smut loving FMC! And Aim is absolutely *chefs kiss* 🤌🏼💋 The tattoos, the piercings, I couldn't get enough!

And naturally I loved their quick connection and instant chemistry. Everything that I enjoy about Liana's full length novels appear in this short novella. The action, the tension, the banter AND humor!

If you've been reading this series then you definitely need to read this one next! 🔥 I can't wait for the next novel, The River of Woe!

This is a short, sweet, steamy read about a demon lord, Aim, and a mortal named Amy that he has a chance encounter with on the streets of London. He is instantly captivated by her, but with her face in her phone, she didn't even notice him. After some light stalking (and rearranging of her dresser drawers) Aim makes himself "known" to Amy and she can't help but fall for him. When Aim's enemy learns of his obsession, they know how to hurt him where it counts. Can Aim get to Amy in time?

I loved Aim so much. Y'all know I love a man with wings 😍 I loved how he cared for and protected Amy.

Thank you so much to Liana for the early copy to read and review!

This was a fun, quick read that kept me engaged from start to finish. I really enjoyed the FMC and MMC characters who both had unique personalities that brought charm and humor to the story. The pacing made it an easy book to fly through, just what I needed at the start of the year and working towards my annual reading goal, but there were a few points in the story that I wish were a bit further developed and explored a bit more deeply, especially towards the end.

Still a solid read for anyone looking for a fun, quick and spicy romance.

The Veil of Obsidian is a steamy, fast paced novella that delivers on heat and chemistry between its leads, Aim and Amy. Liana Valerian excels at creating intense, sensual moments, and the dynamic between the demon lord and his human obsession is undeniably entertaining. However, the book leaves much to be desired in terms of plot and emotional depth, which could have elevated it from "enjoyable" to "great."
I loved the vibes that Aim gave off, very morally grey. And his compulsion to order things, that was very hilariously.
This is a very enjoyable read for readers that are looking for a fast steam heavy story.

We have our FMC... Goofy, kind of ditzy brit, Amy. (She is hilarious, and I absolutely would be best friends with her. 😂) While on a walk one day she bumps into our MMC. The sexy demonic assassin, Aim. She is oblivious to this but he is instantly intrigued by her...and by intrigued I mean obsessed to the point he does some light stalking.

The Veil of Obsidian is short. It's a novella...and it's spicy af. Mostly spice, in fact, but done well. This is only the second book I've read by Liana but I fully intend on reading more of her work.

★★★★★ Aim is my new book boyfriend…
Veil of Obsidian is dark, wicked fun in the very best way. The spice is 🔥🔥🔥 (pierced MMC lovers, you’re absolutely fed 🍆), and Aim is equal parts unhinged, possessive, and irresistibly compelling—exactly what I want from a demon lord stalker romance. I also loved catching the indie-author shout-outs woven into the story; they added a playful, community-loving touch that made this book even more enjoyable. Another addictive, sinful win for The Rivers of Hell—Liana Valerian does not miss.

Arc reader here! Can I just say I need me an Aim asap?! Lawd this man be doing all the chores and taking care of her needs as well?! Send me one right NOW! But for real Aim and Amy together are hilarious. They don’t sugarcoat shit with each other and are hilariously honest with one another. This book was refreshing and just what a girl needed to cleanse her palate and crave a new book boyfriend as well as hella relate to an FMC who is also a beta/arc reader addicted to book boyfriends who is also wanting to create their own!

Also I loveeee that “your idol” by Saja boys is in the playlist!!

The Veil of Obsidian is dark and intense and fully leans into the stalker vibe. The atmosphere is moody and seductive, and the demon love interest is both creepy and weirdly irresistible. This is definitely not a light or fluffy read, but if you like obsessive, morally gray characters and dark paranormal romance, it delivers. A good pick for fans of darker romance. The scene with the horns live rent free in my head.

Do you like Demon fantasies? Lots of smexy scenes? An edge of danger and mild stalking? Then this is the book for you!
I dont feel as connected with the characters as I have in other books, but it was a quick and enjoyable read. It filled some good darkness with lots of smexiness.
My only point would be that I felt a bit wanting for more story between the smexy scenes. Good read and definitely recommend for anyone wanting a quick spicy book to read!.

This book was such a fun, spicy ride—I was hooked from page one. A sassy, bold FMC paired with a demon who knows exactly what he wants (and isn’t shy about showing it) makes for seriously entertaining heat.
