I think this book is excellent for people who do not know a lick about Roman religion, I think Rachel did a good job with putting the information in a concise way to help the reader to understand and I did like how she focused on the historical perspectives and sources rather than trying to blend so much of modern paganism.
My only criticism I do feel as though the book should’ve have a guide on how to worship the Roman gods properly because it’s a very important piece of information on how to address the deities in question there is no guide or anything that mentions of cleansing before worshipping, that you need to veil, or what gestures to perform. At least give the reader that option.
Then the matter of Lupa being a goddess, there is no direct evidence that the She-wolf that saved Romulus and Remus was a goddess. Animal worship was not common if not existed in Roman or even pre Roman usually it’s associated with the deity. Mars is associated with wolves and a wolf is saving the sons of Mars. Also the fact that Lupa may or may not have been a prostitute the wife of Faustulus and associated with fertility. Lupercalia was only associated with Lupus or Lupercus like a Faunus character, the Lupercal cave where the twins were being nursed was probably a sacred site, but then again Historians do not know for certain and there is no such evidence pointing that Lupa was a deity with a cult or flamen. Romulus was the only divine figure in that mythical story.
