Monsters Of Saltford Bay #1

Falling for the Grumpy Orc: A Cozy Monster Romance

Rate this book
I came to Saltford Bay for a fresh start. I didn’t expect it to come with a big, broody orc who thinks smiling is a crime and I’m a disaster waiting to happen.
He might be right. I might also want to kiss him. Both can be true.

Newly divorced and armed with nothing but grit, strong coffee and a Pinterest board full of impossible dreams, my plans to renovate a crumbling seaside lodge are jeopardized by the town’s grumpiest, greenest contractor.

Gerralt Banesman is big, broody, and allergic to conversation. I’m sunshine, sass, and a walking chaos magnet. Our first meeting ended with spilled wood stain, sharp words, and one very offended orc.

But when a shady rival threatens everything I’ve been working for, Gerralt steps in with calloused hands and a scowl that might be hiding a heart of gold. The more time we spend together, the more I start to suspect there’s something under that gruff exterior. Something warm, protective, maybe a little bit dangerous and one hundred percent sexy.

And the real problem? I’m starting to like it.

Welcome to Saltford Bay, where monsters are real, neighbors are nosy, and true love comes with claws. Perfect for fans of Emily Antoinette, That Time I Got Drunk and Saved a Demon, and Get a Life, Chloe Brown.

Each book in the Monsters of Saltford Bay series can be read as a standalone. This cozy and steamy small town romance story is low angst, funny and full of sexy, grumpy monsters with tusks and hearts of gold. Intended for mature readers.

Mary grew up in the quiet peace of a small rural village in the heart of Quebec, Canada.

She spent her childhood chasing butterflies and catching frogs, playing in the mud and generally being as unladylike as she could. Her love of science led her to complete a mechanical engineering degree at the Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal, where she met the love of her life.

Years later, as she enjoyed the role of full time mom to her two wonderful children, she decided to pursue her dream of becoming a writer.

She now write as much as her busy schedule allows to bring to life her inner world, filled with exotic planets, mysterious creatures and off course, hot, alpha heroes and the women who melt their hearts.

When she's not writing, she can be found in the garden, walking her dogs or playing with fire in her kitchen as a part time hit-or-miss chef.

I loved this cozy monster romance who knew falling for a grumpy orc could be so heartwarming?

Set in a charming small town during fall, this book gave me all the cozy vibes: crisp autumn air, a fall festival, bonfires, and that warm, comforting feeling of the season. The setting alone made me want to curl up with a blanket and never leave.

Our grumpy orc love interest is not only a total cinnamon roll under that tough exterior, but he’s also a woodworking contractor (swoon!). The romance is a slow burn, but when the spice hits, it’s hot.

This was such a feel-good read with lovable characters, a sweet romance, and just the right amount of heat. I absolutely adored it! Thanks to the author for the gifted Arc.

🌶️🌶️½ spice

Thank you to the author and BookSirens for providing me with an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own and given honestly

This book gave me so many butterflies and had me giddy and smiling like a fool. I don’t even know where to start, but the book from the get-go just swept me away. It had such a smooth and easy introduction—not just into the world, but into getting to know the characters.

I loved the dual POVs. Being able to see into both of their minds gave such a beautiful view into their feelings and personalities that I couldn’t stop grinning. The warmth and chemistry between the characters was so well-written, I honestly started to wonder if I was falling in love myself.

There was a perfect balance between spice and story, and I was totally engaged the whole time. The emotional depth hit hard too—so many relatable moments that reminded me of my own family, past loves, and personal experiences.

I keep trying to find a fault—something I didn’t like—but honestly... I can’t. The book was just so warm, easy, and satisfying that I flew through it in no time. I didn’t want to sleep until I knew how it ended. If I had to give one remark, it would be this: I wanted more. I needed to stay in their lives longer, to bask in the sweetness and gasp at the drama just a little while more.

I love when a book completely blows me away—and this one did. I’m beyond happy I read it.

Would I recommend it?
Absolutely. Get this book. You need it—it’s a must! ✅

Would I read it again?
I plan to. 💯

How would I sum it up?
A sweet, heartwarming read that wraps you in a hug and leaves you grinning. A story that makes you want to curl up, drift away, and bask in the warmth.

In a world where “monsters” are real, Cassidy Perkins has come to Saltford Bay for a fresh start, after divorcing her unfaithful husband. Gerralt Banesman, a big, broody orc, is an expert craftsman, but wants nothing to do with the new owner of the Saltwater Lodge, who is trying to hire him to renovate the lodge. With some maneuvering by his grandmother and a busy body pixie, as well as the threat of a local shady contractor taking advantage of Cassidy, Gerralt reluctantly steps in to help. Of course Cassidy is determined to pitch in any way she can, which charms Gerralt, as he sees how hard she works to realize her dream. The more time they spend together, the more Gerralt begins to thaw and Cassidy begins to feel warm, protected and very attracted. Gerralt had experienced a major trauma as a teen and doesn’t feel like he deserves happiness or companionship, and Cassidy has just experienced a cheating mate, but these two just needed to realize what they might have together if they gave it a chance. I loved this grumpy male meets sunshine and chaos, and how it all comes together is great fun. I’m definitely going to be reading more in the Monsters of Saltford Bay series.

*ARC Review*

Honestly, automatically got 5 stars once I read the written by human disclaimer with the website link.

Managed to keep 5 stars throughout the read, short meet cute, love at first sight but lets fight it for 1/2 of the book vibe. I enjoyed it very much. MMC blames himself for stuff that isn’t his fault, sees the good in FMC. Make friends, fight enemies, 10/10 enjoyment.

She needed a fresh start. He never planned to care.

Cassidy (h) has nothing left to lose after a brutal divorce, so she buys a crumbling coastal lodge in Saltford Bay, hoping to rebuild her life from the ruins. She’s got no plan, no crew, and definitely no clue what she’s doing. What she does have is grit, a stubborn streak, and a haunted inn full of bad wiring and busted pipes.

Gerralt (H) doesn’t do people. The gruff orc carpenter likes quiet jobs and being left alone. But when Cassidy barrels into his world with broken windows and too much heart, his carefully built solitude starts to crack. Their first meeting is a disaster. Their second is a rescue. After that, the walls between them don’t stand a chance.

As they work side by side to restore the lodge, Cassidy and Gerralt are forced to confront their pasts, their fears, and the feelings growing between them. He’s all silence and strength. She’s all fire and vulnerability. Together, they find something neither of them expected to trust again.

Cassidy grows from a hurt and uncertain woman into someone confident in her choices and ready to stand on her own. Gerralt opens up little by little, trading silence for care and distance for quiet loyalty. What starts with tension builds into steady trust, real intimacy, and a love that feels earned.

A sweet and steamy, grumpy sunshine, small town, orc-human, gaslamp romance, exploring love, healing, second chances, personal growth, community, trust, vulnerability, and redemption. It's about starting over, building something real, and falling for someone when you least expect it.

First, I want to say thank you to the author, Mary Auclair, and Book Sirens for gifting me this Arc.

I absolutely devoured this book! I read this book in two sittings. I am a big Orc Monster Romance fan, and I can say that this is the cutest Orc Monster Romance I have read. This story takes place in an adorable small town full of monsters, during the fall season. This book gave me all of the cute cozy fall vibes: crisp air, pumpkin spice lattes, falling leaves, frost in the morning; we even have a festival with a bonfire! This story felt like a mix between a Hallmark movie and Halloweentown, but with some delicious spice.

In this story we have a "sunshine" FMC who is a plus size human and a "grumpy" MMC who is an Orc. We have dual POV, so we get to hear the thoughts from both characters, which are hilarious. I laughed out loud, giggled, and kicked my feet, all throughout this book. We even have a cat and the interactions between our grumpy MMC, and the cat are adorable! I honestly could not put this down!

Even though our MMC and FMC have some instant attraction and emotions, neither want to act on it right away, so the spice is a slow burn. Once we do get to the spice, it is absolutely delicious and perfect! Some of the best spice I have read in a long time.

This book is like a big cozy warm hug and cup of coffee on a chilly fall day. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I cannot wait for more books in this world!

Honestly, dead serious. This is my first monster romance. So let's dive headlong into that. Did I think I would get past the tasks? No. Did I? Absolutely.

What in the absolutely fun HEA did I just read?

This is just so cute and an easy read with out feeling like it's missing anything.

My one beef? He has a broad chest but at one point it says narrow waist and my brain was not ok with this as I tried to imagine an orc just trying to support its broad shoulders and not be unstable. Regardless, that's a very small beef.

It's like a Hallmark story but written better and I really love the whole town vibe and the story building was great. Thank you so much for the Epilogue - I love seeing what happens and that really was the cherry on top.

If you haven't read a monster romance before - this is a fantastic start!

If you have? This is just a fun book to add to the TBR.

I am so glad I got a chance to read this and I genuinely enjoyed it - took me all of a day to binge read.

I can't say there was much not to love.

Spice : 🌶🌶

Stars : ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Would read again!

Let me know when we can get signed copies because I want! My whole heart ❤️

Cassidy Perkins is a human city girl who wants to start over fresh after her divorce. So she buys the Saltwater Lodge in a small town to have her fresh start. But the lodge needs a lot of work and she needs help.

Gerralt Banesman is a green orc that lives alone as a carpenter. He makes beautiful furniture for the town and likes to keep to himself. Everyone worries about him being alone and always working. Until Cassidy asks him for help.

Can these two work together to save the lodge? Or are there differences going to be too much? Will Cassidy have to give up and move back home?

Mary Auclair had me sucked into this book. I couldn’t put it down! It’s well written with minor typos and it’s so cute. When I say I want a cozy book, this is it! It gave me major cozy vibes. I can’t wait to keep reading the rest of the books. It’s sweet and short which is great for on the go reads or when you don’t have a lot of time. I highly recommend!

Absolutely loved this story. I highly recommend if your are looking for a fantasy romance, with high steam and a bit of angst. The characters are funny and lovable. And their antics and inner thoughts will have you laughing, blushing and shaking your head.

Cassidy and Garralt had their work cut out for them. Juggling a budding romance, fending of inconspicuous folks and attempting the renovation of all renovation projects… it's all they can do to stay afloat. From fumbling first meetings, to fluttering around stolen kisses, to hot and heavy steamy scenes! There is plenty of action, discovery, and growth in all of the characters that will pull you in from the start.

Falling for the Grumpy Orc Honest ARC Review:

4⭐️

Cassidy moved to Saltford Bay for a fresh start. Her husband cheated on her and didn’t respect her as an equal. She divorced him and purchased a lodge through an auction.

The auctioned lodge was desired by another who was outbid by Cassidy. He didn’t take that loss easily.

Thank goodness for her Orc in shining armor. Gerralt was a grumpy Orc who was a master woodworker. He crafted beautiful cabinets and took his time to do his best. His life was rather dull until Cassidy and her gorgeous adventures rushed into his life.

So this is adorable, humorous at times and a bit spicy. It’s a great read to escape the mundane activities of the real world. I enjoyed it!

Thank you Book Sirens for sharing this fun ARC with me.

Falling for the Grumpy Orc was a wonderful first book in the Monsters of Saltford Bay series. MFC Cassidy who recently divorced has become owner of a dilapidated lodge in Saltford Bay which she plans on renovating, this is for her a new start and a new life to look forward to.
MMC Orc Gerralt Banesman a grumpy local contractor will soon become the “bane” of her existence just as their animosity towards each other will soon transition into much more. I enjoyed this sweet and spicy romance that was nicely written with a little intrigue, danger, friendships, family dynamics, and passion which should thrill all lovers of entertaining monster romance everywhere. HEA

LOVED our introduction to the small town vibes of Saltford Bay. Our meddling old ladies added humour in the background, and I liked the added danger plotline as a way to bring people together. The renovation made a brilliant foundation (get it?) for the relationship to grow. With the mating side of this series, I also really appreciate the MCs putting emphasis on their women having freedom of choice and fully informed consent before the bonds are complete. This book, as the first, has a focus on creating the community bond and welcoming our FMC, which was lovely to read. A sweet, swoony romance complete with grumps, mates and a happily ever after!

4.25 stars. This story is dual POV, well written, and a sweet and steamy, small town, male orc carpenter (Gerralt)/female human starting over (Cassidy), forced proximity, contemporary fantasy romance. I enjoyed Cassidy’s determination to have a life that didn’t compromise her principles and ethics, even if it meant she wasn’t rich. I empathised with Gerralt’s teenage trauma. I enjoyed seeing him work through his issues and rejoin society. I enjoyed the building relationship and intimacy. I enjoyed the supportive townspeople and the resolution to the challenges Cassidy had been facing.

Cassidy has bought the Saltwater Lodge so she can have a new start. It needs major renovations. She asks Gerralt to help her but he refuses. When he hears that she is talking to another shady contractor in town he steps in and agrees to do the reno. As they work together they get to know each other better and find they are very attracted o each other whether or not he’ll admit it. This is a wonderful romance about two characters who are good for each other and work together to create a beautiful dream despite the trials thrown in their way. A marvellous romance.

This book made me wish monster towns existed, and I could live in one forever! Everyone was so welcoming of Cassidy joining them and starting a business. Gerralt was everything you could ask for in a book boyfriend and his back story was surprisingly very deep. Cassidy's ever-present happiness broke down his walls and it was wonderful to follow along with as a reader. The perfect black cat/golden retriever pairing. I cannot wait to dive into the whole Saltford Bay series. If you love monster books this is a must read. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The sweet story of Cassidy and Gerralt

This was a cute romance between a grumpy Orc named Gerralt and a human female named Cassidy. It is like a fairytale story. Cassidy is on a mission to distance herself from her past and she buys a lodge fixer upper in a small quaint town. When she arrives Cassidy realizes that it needs a lot more work than anticipated. Enter the excellent orc contractor that does amazing things with buildings and wood. Their attraction hits right away but they try to keep things platonic. However working together everyday makes the heart want more. There is a happy ending. Read On!

This story is both short and sweet, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It beautifully combines romance and a touch of suspense, creating an overall delightful experience. Despite being only 222 pages long, the writing is impressive. I've often found short stories to feel rushed, but this one is crafted with care and attention. If you’re in search of a brief yet satisfying romantic tale, this book is absolutely perfect.

This grumpy sunshine angsty tale is mostly lighthearted and would make a cool beach read. As with all first in series we get a lot of information on the town and it’s quirky residents of which Gerralt is a hometown boy and Cassidy makes herself at home immediately. This couple has some serious baggage but they help each other put it away. Throw in a little suspense and some sexy times and this well rounded tale is a fun read.

Even better is how she gets Gerralt to help her bringing him out of his grumpy exile. Together they restore the inn she bought. Unfortunately crooks try to destroy it. I liked how the town as well as her mother came together to give her dream back. Along the way Gerralt and Cassidy fall in love and marry. I'm looking forward to more from this series.

This was a fun series opener and I loved the cozy feel of this story. Bringing together a grumpy orc contractor and a sunshiny chaos magnet of a gal really brought the humour and slow burn romance to life. Cassidy and Gerralt weren't looking for romance but their chemistry was strong and when they couldn't hold back, the spice was hot ;P Expect to fall for these fun characters as they deal with the challenges thrown their way, learn to trust each other and find a wonderful HEA in the end. So good and I'm looking forward to the next book :D

Cassidy is heading to Saltford Bay where she has purchased Saltwater Lodge. Her fresh start, bought the same day she signed her divorce papers. The town is small and just what she needs. When she drives down the road, she finds the decaying sign for the Lodge, and the SOLD sign, and stops to stare.
Falling for the Grumpy Orc is part of the Monsters of Saltford Bay Series and an absolute joy to read. The characters are amazing and real, and the storyline is just perfect. Grab this book and enjoy!.

Falling For A Grumpy Orc was surprisingly good.

At first I wasn’t sure it was for me. I mean an Orc and lots of fairytale creatures, really?

Those creatures, all have personalities and a sense of loyalty.

The relationship between an Orc and human was just so sweet, not what I was expecting.

Read the book, relax with a nice cup of tea and be prepared to be part of someone else’s life.

Absolutely Adorable

A woman trying to prove to herself and others that she camps make sound decisions after her husband betrays her and her mother doubts her. She buys a run down lodge in a quirky town to turn into a B&B. She hires a reclusive Orc who has magical caving skills to help. Or course it turns onto love, and of course there are problems, but it was still a cute and romantic grumpy meets sunshine story.
