Daphne dreams of Mr. Darcy. Finn serves up pints and rock music. Can opposites attract when a tea shop princess meets her pub-owning rival?
In the charming mountain town of Wisteria, North Carolina, Daphne Austen clings to tradition like cream to a scone. She's built her life--and her late grandmother's tearoom, Tea Thyme--around all things delicate china, Jane Austen novels, and the comforting predictability of routine. The only thing threatening her perfectly ordered world? The loud, aggravatingly handsome Brit opening a pub next door.
After his ex-wife broke his heart and his business partner nearly destroyed his career, Finn Dashwood packed up his six-year-old daughter and left England behind. He's looking for a fresh start, and the last thing he needs is a fussy, tea-obsessed neighbor criticizing his every pint and playlist. It doesn't matter that she's ridiculously kind (to everyone else) and that his daughter is utterly fascinated by her. Finn's heart is not open to being broken again.
But disagreements turn into prank wars and then a competition when a high-profile wedding needs a last-minute caterer. The townsfolk are thrilled--Wisteria hasn't seen this much excitement since the county fair lost a goat.
When the wedding demands both sweet and savory fare, Daphne and Finn are forced to put down their swords and pick up their serving trays. Between burnt pastries, brewing tempers, trending hashtags (#SipsAndSpats, anyone?), and one very adorable little girl, rivalry soon gives way to reluctant friendship--and maybe something that feels suspiciously like chemistry.
Can a tea shop princess and a pub owner with a past mix their lives as seamlessly as clotted cream and jam . . . or will their differences keep them steeped in rivalry forever?
Pepper D Basham has been telling tales ever since she was a little girl. When her grandmother called her a “writer” at the age of ten, Pepper took it as gospel and has enjoyed various types of writing styles ever since. A native of the Blue Ridge Mountains, mom of five, speech-language pathologist, and lover of chocolate, Pepper enjoys sprinkling her native Appalachian culture into her fiction wherever she can. She currently resides in the lovely mountains of the New River Valley in Virginia.
Clean, funny and full of charm! No surprise for Pepper's books :) A British pub owner + small-town cafe girl = a rivals-to-lovers romance with emotional depth! I loved this one!
What I loved:
✨So many funny southern references - set in North Carolina ✨The BANTER ✨Coffee, Tea and Sweets ✨Disability Rep ✨Single Dad Trope ✨No Third Act Breakup ✨Rivals to Lovers ✨ALL THE FOOD ✨Found Family ✨Community Helping Each Other ✨Sweet & Funny Granny D ✨ALL THE LAUGHS
As always, a fun time with Pepper's rom-com books. Lots of laughs, yet emotional depth all included in one. I love the single Dad trope and Finn and his daughter Lucy were the sweetest. Finn was just a great guy too, once he opened up. I loved their rivals dynamic. Also really enjoyed Daphne's personality and love for Jane Austen, tea, books, etc.
Lucy's speech disability represented was done beautifully, especially from my own son's speech issues, I appreciate this being included.
What can I say? I just felt like this was exactly the book I needed during a hard season!
The small town, community coming together in the unexpected hardship in the end was also beautiful. Pepper's inspiration from real life events that happened in her town came across and you could feel the emotion from those scenes. She reminded people that even in the hardest seasons, there is hope in God, in community, in family, in life.
About the Book: Daphne is the owner of an English tearoom in the North Carolina mountains, whose carefully ordered life is disrupted when Finn, a messy and unconventional English restaurant owner, moves in next door. They are forced to work together to cater a British-themed wedding, leading to plenty of sparks, humor, and growing attraction. As Daphne helps Finn and his young daughter settle into the community, both begin to heal from past losses and disappointments.
Thank you to the publisher for a gifted e-book and audiobook to review. I purchased a copy of the physical book. All thoughts are my own.

Daphne Austen lives in the charming mountain town of Wisteria, North Carolina, and is very particular about tradition and routine. That’s how she built her life and grandmother’s tearoom, Tea Thyme. The only thing disrupting her life is the loud pub next door and its owner.
Britisher Finn Dashwood left England after his ex-wife broke his heart and his business partner ruined his career. He and his six-year-old daughter come to Wisteria hoping for a fresh start. The last thing he needs is a tearoom owner criticizing everything he does.
When a high-profile wedding needs a last-minute caterer, it’s almost wartime, and the townsfolk are delighted. They have free entertainment after all! But maybe it is also a chance for something more for Daphne and Finn.
The story comes in Daphne and Finn’s third-person POVs.
My Thoughts
This book could go either way. I do enjoy the author’s works and am comfortable with the extent of God (faith) she puts into her books. It didn’t distract me from the plot, but your mileage might vary.
The premise is rather intriguing, and enemies-to-lovers is a fun trope. To support it, the book has a lot of banter, which is sometimes fun and sometimes not. I enjoyed the chats/tweets at the beginning of each chapter (and the hashtags, which remind me the author might have had a spreadsheet to track them all). It fits in with the small-town nosiness (I read this setting a lot).
The FMC is decent if you can ignore her obsession with all things British. This does become a bit too much at times, so I couldn’t stop rolling my eyes when she goes crazy about it. Guess the idea was to give her a bubbly, sunshine vibe, but it doesn’t always land. Still, she is a good person.
The MMC is grumpy and rude sometimes, but I think I liked him better, despite all that flirting. He didn’t flirt with everyone, just the FMC, and you do need something to move the plot in romance. The kid is a darling, though.
The side characters are typical drama-loving townsfolk, who are also ever-ready to help, whether they like it or not! It is a Southern small town, after all!
The author’s romances are clean (as in only a few kisses mentioned). But they do talk quite a bit about attraction. Here, due to the FMC’s massive thing for Brits, she does go gaga over his looks, and apparently, the MMC is too handsome to handle. However, once it settled, the inner monologues included thoughts about each other’s qualities as well, which I appreciated.
Food is integral to the plot and spans a wide range, from teeny bites to hearty meals. I enjoyed the discussions between the MCs about pairing different dishes and giving them creative twists with herbs and spices. Also, it made me crave chocolate mousse, so I tried the cheat version at home.
While I understand the author’s intention to include a real-life event and the power of community coming together, I feel this should have been used at least 40 pages earlier. By the point it started, I was pretty much ready for the book to end. The writing and vibe are great and come from experience, but I didn’t want to read when I was waiting for the final HEA. It also changed the tone from the lighter, flirty banter to something more serious (despite Granny D’s humor), which created a mismatch of sorts.
The epilogue is sweet, though.
To summarize, A Brewed Awakening is a heartwarming, sweet, and cute book about stepping out of one's comfort zone, starting again, and the power of community. It could have been a few pages shorter.
Thank you, NetGalley and Thomas Nelson, for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.
As they say, this story had all the feels. The clean romance was so sweet. Pepper Basham also penned the most intense natural disaster scene I’ve ever read. The ending was quite satisfying. Amazing and outstanding narration. Highly recommend.
I was blessed with an ALC. Thank you NetGalley. The opinions expressed are my own and unbiased.
Oh. My. Goodness. All swoon, all giggles, and all fun with a dash of seriousness to keep it real.
I am so in love with this book and the characters! It was such an entertaining, sweet, touching read that I definitely needed in my life right now. There were impactful faith moments, even though it was small. There was a healthy communication between the couple, so refreshing to see! The characters—all of them—were so endearing and lovely. I honestly don’t know if I could pick a favorite, and if you know me, that’s saying something (I always have favorites lol).
I do love Daphne and Finn, and of course Lucy. Their dynamic was so adorable, funny, lovely and heartwarming. Seeing a protective, swoony, flirty but good, dad to his little girl was so touching. Seeing Daphne and Lucy? Melted my heart.
I would definitely recommend if you love this genre or even if you don’t! I’m a fantasy girl through and through but this book made me so happy and content. (Also loved the Tolkien references of course)
Content: Some intense kissing but not explicit, no spice just swoon romance, some hard topics later in book
✨🥰☕🥐 Heartwarming, witty and charming! A sweet small-town romance, with a beautiful community of people, and a fun sense of humour. The character's all felt genuine, kind, endearing and wonderful.
💬 The social media posts and conversations at the start of each chapter were highly entertaining, they gave you a glimpse into the whole community, and were one of my favorite sections of the story! They were filled with funny hashtags, gossip and flirty banter that always had me chuckling.
🍵🍺 The story follows Daphne, a local business owner who now has a rival business opening up next to hers - enter the dashing (decadently British) Finn Dashwood (aka Flynn "Smolder" Dashwood). He is new to town and opening a hearty pub restaurant next to Daphne's elegant tea shop and bakery. Suffice it to say that this book made me HUNGRY. It was filled with delightful foodie conversations, dishes, descriptions, and competitions. It honestly made me want to bake and cook all day. 😋
💕 The chemistry between Finn & Daphne was great in this one, I loved the teasing and banter - the romance was endearing and sweet. I loved how they challenged and inspired each other, and sparked creativity in their craft. Also, it was lovely to see their journey of finding hope again - and how they worked through their own fears, grief, and loss based on past experiences.
💞 I love the characters and family dynamics the author writes in her stories - they're always so genuine, kind and engaging. Finn was a single-dad to an adorable little girl, who had medical issues related to speech. Daphne's older brother Jack was protective and caring, and they had a great relationship.
🌀 I was not expecting the plot twist in the last 25% of the book and loved the sense of community it displayed, how everyone came together. It was also a nice change of pace to have an event like that take place instead of a regular third-act breakup or similar scenes. It felt more real and meaningful, and I felt the conclusion was better with the addition of the external crisis (that seemed to be based on experience as it felt very real).
🎧 I would love to hear this as an audiobook, it would be great with the Southern & English accents of the character's! Honestly, I'd love a movie too
One thing that could have been better:
The first 30% or so exaggerated the awkwardness, dialogues and dynamics between the character's. It didn't feel as natural in parts because it felt like it was trying too hard to establish a certain personality and characterization for them. Some scenes were dragged out a little longer than necessary with the internal analysis of the character's thoughts and perceptions about each other that I felt could have had more active dialogues and pacing. I think overall this section could have been more condensed. The rest of the story found it's groove and progressed more naturally.
Concluding Thoughts:
This is the second book I've read by Pepper Basham, the last one I had read was a historical fiction. She infuses many values and traits that bring the character's and communities to life in a well-rounded way. The romance is always delightful, having a charming and witty quality. She also touches upon the human experiences and emotions in a way that lends more weight to the fears and choices of the character's.
Overall, this was a lovely contemporary romance that was lighthearted, sweet and charming.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the complementary e-arc of this novel. All opinions expressed here are my own.
Pepper Basham writes EVERYTHING so well, and A Brewed Awakening is another winner! Sweet, romantic, with a yummy tea shop setting in a small Carolina town I'd love to live in. Plus characters you really come to care about. Loved it!
Thank you to Netgalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction Audio for providing me with a copy of this audiobook!
If you're looking for a cosy romance that features a super close knit town as they scheme to get the new local rivals to fall in love then you definitely might love this one!
Unfortunately, it didnt really hit the mark for me... Reading it felt a bit like a never ending chore - 380 pages/13 hours has never felt so long :( this book felt very millennial in a way and it just didnt hit the mark to make me fully invested in both the plot or character development which is such a shame! i really thought itd be a hit for me yk, i thought me being the stereotypical tea loving brit that i am would make this perfect for me
i really did enjoy the narrators though! i think if i didnt read this in audiobook format it would've been much more of a struggle to get through. the narrators did a great job with the delivery of emotions and any hesitations etc. the characters felt throughout this book which i loved! id love to check out more of their work in the future!
This romcom was so cute! One hot chef + a neighboring teashop owner = lots of flirtatious foodie banter.
In unique Pepper Basham style, each chapter starts with a social media post and comments that could be from Twitter or Threads. Everyone from the sheriff to the pastor chimes in from time to time, with local gossip, advertising, and #AllTheCreativeHashtags. I got such a kick out of the Wisteria General Store's creative merch!
At the heart of the novel is a single dad looking for a fresh start and a young woman who has loved and lost one too many times, surrounded by a rather colorful community of small-town Appalachian characters--and a celebrity or two. And there's one little girl with a lisp who loves pink and princesses.
But then comes the plot twist I didn't see coming. Written as only someone who has lived it can. That's when the tears came.
It's a romcom but if you look closely, you'll find some topics near and dear to the author's heart, too. And I think that makes this title extra special.
Note: A bit more kissing and flirting than the Skymar series, but still a clean read!
(Disclosure: I received a digital review copy from NetGalley.)
This book is the ultimate slow-burn romance between an English pub owner and a tea shop proprietor, involving two characters who couldn't be more opposite to each other. Despite their differences, sparks fly between Finn and Daphne from the onset, garnering an audience of local townspeople from Wisteria, North Carolina. With heavily hashtagged social media content following their every move (some posts really should be shared privately!), nothing brings a small town out for gossip-fueled drama like the cooking rivalry that heats up between refined food and comfort food. Foodies will appreciate the delectable meals and treats in this book, making it a chef's kiss for drumming up an appetite while reading.
I appreciate that when difficulties arise, Finn and Daphne realize they cannot lean on their own strength and instead trust in God to help them and their community. With several heated moments between the characters, it's a good thing that they are chaperoned by Finn's adorable daughter, Lucy, who is both brave and beautiful like her favourite character of Rapunzel. Readers who enjoy cutting but not cruel repartee amid a community truly coming together will find it worthwhile to see whether tea or coffee wins the day in A Brewed Awakening. Plus, you might be asking yourself, how does Jodie have so much merchandise and who is buying it all?!
Oh my goodness this book! From about 36% when Lucy had her nosebleed and Daphne helped her and Finn, it just grabbed my heart and did not let go. And the ending! I don't want to say too much about it so as not to spoil anything, but it was a deeply meaningful event that I know was a very personal lived experience for the author.
4.5 stars rounded up - I didn't love Daphne and Finn's dynamic at first, but it was understandable given their life experiences. And at first I didn't love the social media (Twitter/X?) aspect that starts each chapter - although that grew on me! But those are my only small quibbles which are drowned out by the absolutely lovely last two-thirds of this book!! Also, just to put out there that there is no third act breakup.
I absolutely adore Pepper Basham's writing style, her wit, her characters, her stories!!! All of it!!! I am completely here for it all!!! She announces a new book and you can be sure that I'm there getting a copy of it as fast as I can so I can sit back, open the book, and soak it all in!!! And this one just had me laughing out loud, smiling broadly, giggling—A LOT—and even shedding a few tears! Ok, a lot more than just a few. That ending was incredible! The feeling of community and care and love just tugged at my heart strings and brought out the water works! I loved it so much!!!
And Daphne Austen (isn't her name adorable?) and Finnley Dashwood (perfect counterpart/hero name for Daphne) shine in this one! I loved their meet-cute, all of the witty banter between them, but especially the chemistry that you could feel! *Happy Sigh* They were just so adorable! I loved watching their initial impressions be challenged and their relationship evolve from frustrated "neighbors" to possibly friends, to definitely more than friends! They're just adorable! The end!!! Hahaha!
There are so many great secondary characters that added to the charm of this small Appalachian town and community! Especially a funny and meddling grandma character! But then we also have the public communications happening with their wit and humor and predictions flying! Those scenes were a hoot to watch unfold! I loved the community members and how they all rallied around each other to create a great sense of family. Whether it was at fun activities, bake-offs, or when disasters strike, they were incredible!
If you're a fan of this author's works, you won't want to miss this one. If you've never read one of her books, you won't want to miss this one! It's a great place to start and I think you'll be hooked just like me! I'm already lined up for my next book by her to read!
I read and listened to this one and just adored both! Ann Marie Gideon & Christopher Ashman were fantastic narrators for these two characters! They brought them and the delightful town and community members to life and had me feeling as if I was right there alongside it all!!!
Content: Clean. Some sweet kisses but nothing further. This is a Christian fiction novel so some themes and elements that fit in so nicely with these characters and storyline. Some mild peril at one point but nothing crazy.
I received a paperback copy from JustRead Publicity Tours. I also received an audiobook copy from Thomas Nelson Fiction Audio, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Okay wow my reading slump was no match for this book! I was in just the right mood for this book, which admittedly is not the genre I typically lean towards. I can see that it would be a polarizing read because either you want the sappy sweet fluff romance or you don't. Like I said, I usually don't pick up that kind of book but Daphne and Finn were just too hard to resist.
Think Great British Bakeoff meets small southern town, -ish. Rivals to lovers, slow burn, he falls first - this book has it all! This would make a great summer / beach read. I don't really have a lot more to say about it because I think other readers would enjoy it more going in knowing as little as possible.
My only critiques are that I did find the social media parts rather annoying to read, and the bickering / back-and-forth takes over a majority of the book. Notwithstanding (iykyk), that's only me being extra picky because I didn't really care about that while I was reading.
*My thanks to the publisher for the copy of A Brewed Awakening via Netgalley. All opinions expressed are my own!
A brewed awakening was a wonderful small town, enemies/rivals to lovers, closed door romance featuring Daphne, a Wisteria native, and Finn, a single dad who recently moved to Wisteria with his young daughter. Daphne is the owner of the tea shop in Wisteria and a lover of all kinds of teas and sweet treats; while Finn is the complete opposite, a coffee lover who loves to cook savory, english dishes. The banter was great in this story, and the interaction of the main characters with each other and the other Wisteria residents was hilarious and sweet. The narrators had great pace and did an amazing job bringing this story to life.
Thank you Thomas Nelson Fiction Audio for providing this Audio ARC for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
A Brewed Awakening by Pepper Basham is, quite simply, her best work to date. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This book gets all the stars, and it kept me smiling the entire way through.
📖 From the very first chapter, this enemies-to-lovers rom-com delivers charm, heart, and laugh-out-loud moments 😂. Daphne Austen, with her Jane Austen devotion, tearoom traditions 🫖, and love of order, is the perfect foil to Finn Dashwood, a pub-owning Brit serving pints 🍺, rock music 🎸, and second chances. Watching these two clash was pure joy.
The setting alone deserves applause. Wisteria, North Carolina has a cozy, Gilmore Girls–style hometown vibe that makes you want to move there immediately. Add in prank wars 🤭, chalkboard battles, and an utterly delightful hashtag rivalry (#BestRomComEver 😉), and the story becomes impossible to put down.
What truly elevates this book is the heart behind it ❤️. The characters are incredibly lovable, especially Finn’s adorable daughter, and the faith elements are woven in naturally and beautifully. This is a clean romance that still sparkles with chemistry, warmth, and emotional depth.
Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book and was under no obligation to leave a positive review. All opinions are my own.
I love Pepper Basham's books and this one doesn't disappoint. The social media commentary throughout had me in stitches and I would read the to my husband. Definitely recommend. Thanks netgalley for the chance to review.
4.5⭐️ A swoontastic, full of heart and hope, and funny story. I love Pepper Basham’s writing and this book had an extra dose of special. (I’m still praying for the people in Western North Carolina ❤️)
I loved this book! I laughed out loud many times, I felt the town's devastation deep in my soul, I loved the main characters. It was just a fabulous book.
An absolutely sweet, charming, and cozy Hallmark style Gilmore Girls meets British Bake-off story. Basham's books are always an absolute delight. And this one is no different. This story has all the feels and readers will love the banter and tension between Daphne and Finn as they go from being opposites and enemies to fighting the attraction they have for one another. This happens as they bicker, banter, and eventually start to understand and inspire each other in their businesses. And the child speech disability representation is done so well. An adorable story with an unexpected plot twist in the end, this is another fantastic must read from Basham!!
A complimentary copy of the book was provided. A review was not required and all views and opinions expressed are my own.
There is much to love about Basham's latest release: the messages of hope and resilience, the beauty of strong, supportive community... the princess-obsessed six-year-old darling named Lucy. The cast of characters (in Basham's usual style) was hilarious and distinct, and I loved the over-involvement of Wisterian citizens in Finn and Daphne's love lives. They really didn't stand a chance. From Granny D. to Mr. Rutherfurton to Pastor Nate to Daphne's own brother, there was no shortage of individuals eager to put in their two cents (and I mean in the betting sense).
The premise of A Brewed Awakening is so fun, and I am a Daphne girl all the way--give me heels, pink, pretty teacups, and all things British any day. (Although I really want one of Finn's molten chocolate cakes, if I'm being entirely honest.) Finn was charming as all get out, of course, and his and Daphne's banter was top notch. I loved the way their shared love for food and their kindness was what ultimately brought them together.
That said, I do have a gripe about the enemies-to-lovers trope here--the physical attraction felt SO heavy and almost lustful at points through the first half of the book, and it wasn't until they started getting to know each other as friends that their relationship really shifted to include character-based attraction. I get it. They had to hate each other, but simultaneously... want each other? I just didn't love how it played out on-page, personally. I enjoyed it once better once we got past the halfway point!
Overall, though, I really enjoyed A Brewed Awakening (and want to experiment with some new recipes!) but I wouldn't say it's my favorite from Basham. I'm really looking forward to Pride & Practicality's release, though!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are my honest opinion.
This book gets ALL of the stars. I absolutely LOVED this book and it’s now one of my top 3 Pepper Basham reads and I have read pretty much all of her books except a couple and I’m reading those this summer.
First off, I adored Finn. I kept picturing actor Jake Stormoen in my head as I was reading and it was such fun! I would LOVE a movie version of this story with Jake as Finn! Who do we talk to about this?!?! The banter/snark between Finn & Daphne was on point and I was here for it! I also really loved the inclusion of Daphne’s brother with his disability as well as sweet little Lucy and hers. And then, the last few chapters-ALL the feels! I bawled and knowing Pepper’s personal experiences that contributed to the turn the story took, made it that much deeper. This book is exquisite. Pure and simple.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher and also purchased my own Audible copy. I was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
This is a solid 3.5. Cute cozy small town romance between an English pub owner who hates tea and a small town American tea shop owner that loves all things British. They have a lot of push and pull and it’s easy to see from the beginning that they’ll end up together. Personally the hashtags in the beginning of chapters threw me off. The male and female narrators did a fantastic job , although I’ll still die on the hill that men should not do women voices esp children 😅🤣 Thanks so much to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for this ALC.
After reading this book I think I found a new favorite romcom author. This book transformed me into a new "hallmark" world with a fun witty story about a chef and a teashop owner. I am a sucker of witty comebacks, banter, and adding in social media posts at the beginning of the chapters. This book was not only a romcom but it also mentioned tops that I believe a lot of readers can related to. Having the relatable topics is something that I appreciate that authors include as it feels more real. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. #Netgalley
This was my first Pepper Basham book, and I can tell she’s a really great writer. The plot concept was really cute: sweet, Southern, tea-loving girl and salty, British, coffee-loving pub owner slowly fall in love in a small North Carolina town. I really liked many aspects of it, and I liked the faith based worldview of it, too!
But I think as far romcoms go, this one was middle ground for me. There were a few things about it that weren’t my preference:
- The first 50% was mostly a bickering-flirt hybrid. I know some people really love the rivals/enemies vibes, but I think I’ve learned I get weary of it if it goes on too long.
- Though it picked up for me around the halfway point and I started to really get into it, the last 20% took a turn towards a heavier storyline that I wasn’t anticipating in this kind of romcom. The majority of the book didn’t match that tone, so it didn’t seem to fit well. The story was hopeful, which I appreciated, but when I pick up a romcom, I want something with minimal conflict and light content.
- This book was just a little too long and maybe tried to do too much. If this had been shorter and more consistent emotionally, I think it would have ranked higher for me.
This was still an enjoyable, entertaining read for me, nonetheless. I definitely plan to read more by Pepper, because I really enjoyed her writing and sense of humor!
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Charming, funny, and delightful, I loved it! I want to live in Wisteria. You do not want to miss this sweet enemies-to-lovers, and opposites-attract foodie rom-com set in the perfectly endearing small town.
Anglophile Daphne Austen, owner of Tea Thyme, meets the new owner of The Green Dragon Pub, and next door neighbor British Finn Dashwood while she is practically drooling over his English car (a Cabriolet like the one her grandma used to love). "There would come a day when she'd respond like a grown-up around handsome men. This was not that day." She's less than impressed with Finn despite his car.
Oh my goodness, the start of every chapter includes local town social media posts and hashtags that are a hoot!
A Brewed Awakening is about a town full of unforgettable characters, and main characters who have been through difficult losses, an adorable six-year-old daughter Lucy, highly entertaining banter, friendly competition, and lots of great food. Everyone in town pulls together during good times and difficult times. The author has created such a great place, I wasn't kidding when I said I'd like to live here, or spend a vacation here.
I highly recommend A Brewed Awakening for lovers of satisfying romantic comedy! Author Pepper Basham writes completely entertaining and delightful stories, and this latest one is wonderful.
Thank you to Thomas Nelson via Net Galley for allowing me to read an early copy. All opinions are my own.
A fun romance between two opposites set in a small Appalachian mountain town. Contemporary romance fans will enjoy this one, full of witty banter between rival owners of eateries. The food references were droolworthy, they all sounded so good. Loved the funny 'tweets' from the community members that punctuated the story. There is a lot more going on beneath the surface of their back and forth escapades. Both main characters have had serious life experiences that they had to overcome and that continue to color their outlook on relationships. The addition of a sweet little girl brought out a tender side of both, complete with Disney princess references and songs. The plot turns a serious corner or two towards the end as a crisis brings the community together. The ending was less predictable than I'd imagined as a result and heartfelt. Definitely worth the wait. Recommend to readers who enjoy a book with a clean romance and inspirational moments. 4.5 stars
(An ebook was provided by the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions expressed are my own.)
Adorable rom-com. Hallmark movie meets British bake-off competition with a small-town twist. And a natural disaster at the end that had me staying up late!
It’s the battle of the Brits! Well, he’s a Brit. She loves all things British, except him. Kind of.
Confused yet? Welcome to Wisteria! It’s the town everyone longs for and where family is more than just blood.
Daphne Austin owns the local tea shop. Finn Dashwood is building a traditional English pub in the space next door. One loves tea. One loves coffee. One is striving for refined. One cooks a mean Bangers and Mash.
Both are carrying deep wounds, and clash from day one. When a celebrity wedding caterer drops out, getting the job becomes a competition. Will it drive them further apart, or will a collaboration pull them closer?
Filled with faith, hope and quirky characters, A Brewed Awakening is a true winner! Did I forget to mention swooney kisses and witty banter? Can’t leave that out!
Oh, and have a stack of napkins at the ready, because the food will get you drooling and the end will get the tears flowing.
I received an advance copy from the publisher. I’m under no obligation and my review has not been solicited. Very highly recommend!
I’ve gone back and forth about whether I wanted to finish this book, but I’ve decided to DNF it. Overall, the story has legs—it just feels like it could have been soooo much shorter. For me to have listened to 68% of the book already, but still have 4 hours left has me scratching my head. It made me have to really think about whether I’m invested enough in the characters and the story to continue listening. In the end, I decided that I wasn’t. I did enjoy the humor, the development just stalled out for me.
Don’t let my opinion keep you from giving it a try though—so many others absolutely adored it!!
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for the ALC.
